Politics / Obi In A Rush To Be President, Says Atiku by kahal29: 3:47am On Mar 03, 2023
The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, on Thursday, said the presidential bid of his Labour Party, counterpart, Peter Obi is premature.

Atiku, who stated this while addressing a press conference in Abuja, insisted that he remained the stepping stone to the aspiration of the Igbo to produce Nigeria’s President.

He said, “When I ran in 2019, I picked an Igbo man as a running mate simply because I felt that after any other zone again, the next zone must be South-East. In 2011, I also picked another Igbo man. And in 2023, I also picked another Igbo man. And I have always said that I will be a stepping stone to an Igbo Presidency.

“Because there is no zone alone in this country that can produce a President on his own. I have always told my Igbo compatriots that you negotiate for power, you don’t fight for it.

“So, for anybody to think that I have anything against Labour Party, I think Peter (Obi) was in a rush. Do you know why I say he was in a rush?

“When the campaign started and our PDP governors said that they must produce the president among them, they must produce the vice-president among them, they must produce chief of staff amongst them, Peter got scared and left.

“I did not get scared, I stood up against the governors. When we formed the PDP some of them were perhaps in secondary school or in university.

“So, why should I be afraid and I stood up and fought them and I won the primaries.

“So, if he were there, nothing would have stopped him from becoming a running mate because I had the right of choosing who would be my running mate.

Speaking further, Atiku said Obi “wounded” his outing in the election by taking away the votes he would have gor from the South-East and South-South.

He also said his party was ready to have an alliance with the LP if Obi was willing.

“The question of whether I will work with Peter or not, or whether Peter wounded the PDP; yes, to some extent, he did because all the votes he carried were PDP votes in the South-South and the South-East. Agreed, he took our votes from the South-East and South-South, that, of course, will not make him President. You all know that to be President of this country, you need votes from everywhere. So, as far as I am concerned, Peter is welcome to have a dialogue with the PDP

“We are ready to have a dialogue with him. I don’t think we will have any problem if he wants to have a dialogue with PDP either to form an alliance or not.”

Politics / Nigeria’s Bonds Record Huge Gains As Investors Predict Victory For Tinubu by kahal29: 8:08am On Feb 28, 2023
Nigerian bonds recorded some of the best gains in emerging markets on Monday, Bloomberg is reporting.

The news agency said five of Nigeria’s dollar bonds ranked among the 10 best performers on Monday in a Bloomberg index of 71 emerging and frontier nations.

The country’s sovereign risk premium narrowed the most this year on Monday, according to JPMorgan Chase & Co. data.

The equity benchmark in Lagos rose to an eight-month high.

The development was attributed to expectations by investors that Bola Tinubu, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who’s taken an early lead in the presidential election tally, would implement much-needed fiscal reforms.

“Markets seem to be increasingly pricing in a Tinubu win, given the expectations that he could push through reforms quicker than others,” Simon Quijano-Evans, chief economist at Gemcorp Capital Management, was quoted as saying.

“But it is difficult to see this holding if the election winner is unable to quickly turn around the macro story with visible reforms and personnel changes.”

Quijano-Evans also said some of the gains might have been driven by bargain hunters after Nigeria’s bonds tumbled in the run-up to the elections.

Bloomberg said Nigeria’s bond due 2047 rose 1.8 cents on the dollar to 68.8, cutting its yield by 33 basis points to 11.5 percent.

Meanwhile, securities maturing in 2029, 2030, 2032 and 2033 all rallied more than 2% in price.

The NGX 50 Index rose for a fourth day to the highest level since June 2022, with Stanbic IBTC Holdings Plc accounting for more than half of the gains.

JPMorgan gauge of sovereign-risk premium, meantime, narrowed 42 basis points to 723 – a reduction of 104 basis points in the past three days.

It said the measure had hovered above the 1,000 basis-point mark until November 3, the widely accepted threshold to indicate a debt-distressed nation.

On his part, Patrick Curran, a senior economist at Tellimer Ltd, said, “Tinubu, who we perceive as being the least market-friendly of the three main candidates, is currently in the driver’s seat, but it is still early days and the positive reaction in Nigerian credit could indicate that markets think Obi stands a fighting chance.”

“There is likely to be a positive macro policy shift at the margin no matter who wins the election.”

Politics / Commonwealth, ECOWAS Applaud Poll As Tinubu Leads With 6.3m Votes by kahal29: 7:27am On Feb 28, 2023
The Chairperson of the Commonwealth Observer Group and former president of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki, yesterday said Nigeria’s 2023 general elections were “largely peaceful” despite administrative and logistics hurdles at many polling units.

Also, the ECOWAS Observation Mission described the elections as generally peaceful and transparent.
This is coming as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is so far leading with 6,300,834 votes according to results of last Saturday’s presidential election so far announced at the National Collation Centre in Abuja and as declared in 18 states collation centres across the country.

Delivering his team’s preliminary assessment of the electoral process at a press conference in Abuja, Mbeki said Nigerians were largely accorded the right to vote.

“We congratulate all Nigerians for their determination, patience and resilience displayed throughout the electoral process, “he said.

He urged all citizens to exercise patience to allow the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its staff to conclude the results process peacefully.

“We call on all those with grievances to address disputes through prescribed legal channels.

“The time now is for restraint and continued patience as we await the final results,” he said.

He commended the commitment shown by voters despite the late arrival of election officials and materials at many polling units, technical issues with the biometric identification machines in some cases, and delays with the live results transmission system.

On its part, the ECOWAS Observation Mission described the elections as generally peaceful and transparent.

The leader of the delegation and former President Ernest Koroma of Sierra Leone, during a preliminary briefing on the elections in Abuja, said the voter turnout was low in most polling units visited.

He said most electorate composed themselves throughout the voting process.

“Vote counting and tallying processes were carried out in a transparent, simple and professional manner, in the presence of party agents, observers, and security agents in the daytime in some polling units and with lamps in others, where voting was delayed,” he added.

While commending the INEC for ensuring a hitch-free exercise, he, however, noted that there were pockets of violence in some states of the federation during the election.

“Most polling officials and ad hoc staff demonstrated inadequate knowledge of their duties, especially with voting materials. The set-up of most of the polling units visited did not adequately protect the secrecy of the voting process,” he also said.

Politics / Abia State Joins Suit Against CBN Naira Redesign Policy by kahal29: 7:14am On Feb 17, 2023
Abia state Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, has directed the Attorney General of the State, Chief Uche Ihediwa, SAN, to put all necessary legal processes to join the suit over the new policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to change old Naira notes to new ones.

Commissioner for Information, Barr. Eze Chikamnayo, in a statement, explained that the state government decided to join the suit challenging the policy at the Supreme Court as a result of the untold hardship being experienced by Abia citizens due to the unavailability and poor distribution of the newly redesigned notes.

He further stated that the state government wants the Naira redesign policy to be implemented in a way that it will not continue to threaten the peace and economic well-being of Nigerian citizens.

“It must be noted that the welfare of Abia Citizens everywhere remains the cardinal principle of the Rebuilder of Abia State, Dr Okezie Victor Ikpeazu.
“Therefore, his decision to have Abia State joined as one of the States challenging this anti – people policy in the ongoing legal action at the Supreme Court is as a result of the untold hardship being experienced by Abia citizens due to the unavailabliabilty and poor distribution of the newly redesigned notes.

“Today, in Abia, the cash crunch occasioned by the haphazard implementation of the CBN Naira redesign policy is leading to endless queues at ATM Centers and all manner of exploitation of citizens at POS centers across the State.

“Furthermore, the persistent scarcity of our legal tender has become not just an economic problem but an imminent security threat given the palpable tension it has created amongst the people.

“Governor Okezie Ikpeazu is asking the Central Bank of Nigeria to immediately find solutions to this issue as no responsible leader will fold his hands and allow his people, both in the urban and rural areas, to continue to suffer the agony of this anti -people policy.”

Politics / Wike: Tinubu Turned Down PDP’s Offer To Sabotage Buhari In 2019 Election by kahal29: 7:33am On Feb 16, 2023
Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike yesterday recalled how the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, turned down offers to work against the reelection of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

Wike said after meeting with a former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and the Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, in Paris between 2017 and 2018, he was sent to the Bourdilion, to persuade Tinubu to join the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and work against Buhari.

The governor commended Tinubu for his steadfastness and loyalty to President Buhari, despite the challenges he had faced in the ruling party.

He said: “I came to your house in Bourdillon. I came and said to you sir, look at the way the country is moving. There is no way we can allow the current president to continue in 2019.

“You now asked me, okay, what are the alternatives? I said sir, we have Atiku, we have Tambuwal, we have Bukola. You laughed. You said, look, I will remain with Buhari. If these are your alternatives, I will remain with Buhari, that I don’t know them.”

The governor spoke when Tinubu, his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima, and APC National Chairman Senator Abdullahi Adamu, visited him in Government House, Port Harcourt.

On Tinubu’s entourage were, Governors Abubakar Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi) ; Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), David Umahi (Ebonyi), former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi, Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva and Tony Okocha.

Wike commended the APC governors for their insistence that power must return to the South after President Buhari’s tenure.

He said: “I thank APC governors for standing firm to say the unity of this country is more paramount. If you want to be president, without peace, does it make sense? You must be president when the country is united and you will enjoy being president.”

The governor described the APC presidential candidate as a man of character and courage, saying such attributes were what the country desperately required.

He said: “I wish you good luck. I support the principle of fairness, equity and justice and that is what G-5 stands for. G-5 does not stand for anybody.”

He urged Tinubu to prevail on the Federal Government to ensure that 2023 general election was not truncated.

Wike noted that the Central Bank flagrant disregard to the Supreme Court on the naira swap policy should worry the APC-led Federal Government amidst the forthcoming poll.

Wike, who thanked God that the APC presidential rally in the state was devoid of violence, however, expressed reservation whether the APC-led Federal Government was interested in conducting the election particularly with the lingering naira swap crisis.

He said: “Do you people really want this election to take place or not; or you have an agenda to truncate this election? I don’t know. Look at what is happening in Oyo today, Edo, Delta. See what is going on.”

The Rivers State governor maintained that the abrupt naira redesign and the tactless implementation of the naira swap policy by the CBN smacked of pure politics.

He insisted that irrespective of the politics, the ruling APC must ensure the conduct of the election.

He said: “I believe your party should make sure this election holds. You people are in power. Ensure that this election holds. Nobody can solve the issue of corruption in two-three months. It is not possible . This thing is purely politically motivated.”

Wike took a swipe on the governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, for his blatant disregard to the Supreme Court.

He said: “How can you people be in government at this time, governor of a Central Bank disrespecting the Supreme Court. Where has it happened in any democracy? Governor of Central Bank thinking of whether to obey Supreme Court order. Where has it happened?

“I am not talking about Federal High Court order, not Court Of Appeal. I am talking about Supreme Court. Supreme Court said do not do this and everybody is folding hand begging Central Bank to obey Supreme Court order. Which country has it ever happened? When the order of Supreme Court is not obeyed, what are you telling the poor people on the street?

Wike, who described himself as an unrepentant member of the PDP, said it was abominable for two PDP states, Bayelsa and Edo, to join the Federal Government as defendants in the suit brought before the Supreme Court by some states challenging the naira swap policy.

He said: “For the first time I have seen a government procuring opposition to join them to defend their policy. A policy that is anti-people. You are now the ones procuring we (PDP) to defend something that is totally wrong. I have seen anything like this in my life. It is a big shame.”

Wike advised Tinubu and the national leadership of the APC not to invest resources in any of the party’s candidate in the state, because none of them would win a single seat in the election.

Tinubu informed Wike that the courtesy visit was necessitated by his sheer regard and admiration for his advocacy that power should rotate to the South.

He said he joined the race to lead the country on the philosophy that power should return to the South, as consistently advocated by Wike.

Tinubu said: “Our courtesy call, not to personalise it, is out of the respect I have for you. You worked hard and you voiced loudly your commitment to unity and the critical part to that unity in Nigeria, you never advocated a division of our country. You followed history. You respect the country.”

Senator Adamu explained that APC had deliberately resolved that power should rotate to the South at the end of President Buhari’s tenure.

According to him, the decision resulted in the emergence of Tinubu as the presidential candidate for the 2023 election.

He commended the Rivers State governor for his advocacy that power should shift to the South.

According to him, Wike had by his stance on power shift, demonstrated that he was a man of conscience.

Politics / Naira Redesign: No Meeting Has Held This Week Between FG And Govs - Gov Elrufai by kahal29: 9:01pm On Feb 15, 2023
A few hours after the Supreme Court adjourned the currency redesign case today, The Cable, a respected publication, published what it described as an exclusive story regarding the intentions of the Federal Government on the matter.

Malam Nasir El-Rufai would like to clarify that The Cable has been misled by its sources on this issue. There has been no meeting this week between the FG and either the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) or the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), not to talk of one lasting till the wee hours of today, Wednesday, 15 February 2023.

Rather, senior officials of the FG reached some governors, including Malam Nasir El-Rufai, on phone to initiate discussions on a possible out of court settlement. The terms they proposed were to allow only the old N200 note to remain legal tender and be circulated by the CBN till 10 April 2023. They claimed that the CBN had already destroyed the old N500 and N1000 notes that had been deposited, but that those persons who still held the old notes could redeem them up to 10 April 2023.

These were not considered as serious proposals, for obvious reasons. Circulating the old N200 notes alone would not be sufficient to relieve widespread human suffering in Kaduna State, and indeed in Nigeria today. They knew that and that is why they falsely claimed that the CBN had already destroyed the old N500 and N1000 notes. This is contrary to the fact available to the governors to the effect that the old notes were in the custody of commercial bank branches throughout Nigeria until the evening of Monday, February 13, and not a single N500 or N1000 had been destroyed.

It is also a non-starter to insist on a new cut off date without first assuring that sufficient new notes would have been printed and circulated. Information available to the governors also indicates that the Mint will need at least 12 months to print the minimum amount of N1 trillion needed to ensure a functioning trade and exchange environment in Nigeria.

The tabling of false facts, inadequate solutions to the sufferings of our people, and the bad faith that some of the FG negotiators displayed in our phone conversations and chats have now been taken further in leaking a false account and context to a respected medium. The plaintiff governors rejected the draft proposal as insincere, and invested our hopes in the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

Malam Nasir El-Rufai will be addressing the people of Kaduna State on this currency redesign mess, the consequences of the extension of the injunction of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, and related matters tomorrow. But the Kaduna State Government feels it is important tonight not to allow an exclusive falsehood to stand, or even gain the slightest traction. This statement is therefore issued to put the records straight.

He said despite granting the approval for the venue, Atiku campaigners created some scenarios and later ran away because of their lack of capacity.

Wike spoke at Nyemoni Secondary School field in Abonnema town, venue of PDP campaign for Akuku-Toru Local Government Area on Monday.

The Governor explained that PDP PCC in Abuja had applied to him seeking approval of a venue to use for their rally in the state, which was approved.

He said having realised that they lacked the capacity to mobilise the crowd to fill the stadium, the PCC went to clear another piece of land in Trans-Amadi Industrial Layout owned by the state government, which was not granted.

He said instead of returning to prepare the stadium that was approved, the PCC started making spurious allegations of threat to life as the reason why they were putting off their rally in Rivers State.

“I gave them the stadium, they know they have no capacity to fill the stadium, they are looking for excuses. They went and forced themselves to use government land at Trans Amadi. I said no, that was not where I gave you. Where I gave you was Adokiye Amiesimaka, go and fill that place.

“They now said no, we won’t go there again. We don’t want people to die. Who is killing who? Is anybody killing anybody? I said don’t pay money, I will buy the diesel for you. I will do everything for you. Mobilise, go, and fill that stadium. They ran away.”

Politics / Naira Swap: Four More States Join Suit To Stop CBN by kahal29: 8:31am On Feb 13, 2023
No fewer than four states are joining the suit instituted at the Supreme Court to halt the implementation of Nigeria’s currency redesign policy.

Ekiti State announced on Sunday that it was joining as a co-plaintiff in the legal action and The Punch is reporting that the Attorneys-General of Bayelsa, Sokoto, and Rivers States say they would also join.

The N200, N500, and N1,000 notes were redesigned and unveiled in November 2022 and a 31 January date was set for the phasing out of the old notes but was moved to 10 January.

Kaduna, Kogi, and Zamfara States went to the Supreme Court to stop the implementation of the currency change deadline, citing a scarcity of the new notes and the pain Nigerians have suffered in getting them.

The Supreme Court ordered a suspension of the policy pending the hearing of the suit on 15 January.

But the Attorney-General of the Federation instituted a case at the same court, seeking a dismissal of the three state’s suit.

In what seems like a war between the states and the federal government, the Kano State government went to the Supreme Court last Thursday, seeking a reversal of the naira redesign policy.

It is praying the court to declare that President Muhammadu Buhari cannot unilaterally order a withdrawal of the old notes without consulting with the Federal Executive Council and the National Economic Council.

The recent actions by the governments of Ekiti, Bayelsa, Sokoto, and Rivers States bring to eight the number of states challenging the naira redesign policy.

Politics / Wike Lauds Supreme Court For Stopping Currency Swap Deadline by kahal29: 6:30pm On Feb 08, 2023
****Says Rivers govt will join legal battle

Rivers State governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has lauded the Supreme Court judgement, which suspended plan by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to ban on old naira notes from February 10, 2023.

Wike gave the commendation on Wednesday while speaking during the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign rally at Abua, headquarters of Abua/Odual local government area of the State.

The governor said: “Let me on behalf of the government and people of Rivers State commend the Supreme Court of Nigeria for what they have done today to save the masses from suffering and to save our democracy.

“Today the Supreme Court has stopped the Central Bank of Nigeria from embarking on something majority of Nigerians know is anti-people.

“Like I have said before, our democracy can only survive with the support of INEC, security agencies, and the judiciary. With what happened today, the Supreme Court has futher shown that the hope of the common man lies in the judiciary.

“Let me commend Kaduna State, Zamfara State, and Kogi State that took it upon themselves to challenge the Federal Government at the Supreme Court. Rivers State will join them in that suit to challenge what the CBN is doing against the masses.”

Also, speaking during the rally, PDP governorship candidate in the State, Siminalayi Fubara, said he will sustain the current peace in Abua/Odual Local Government Area, and bring more infrastructural development to the area when he comes on board as governor of the State.

Fubara said: “When the Council Chairman was speaking, he said something very important. He said some years ago some people used to claim that they own the votes in Abua/Odual local government area, but the story has changed today.

“He said if it is only one vote, that vote belongs to PDP, if it is 10 votes or one million votes, they all belong to PDP. The only reason for that is because we have brought peace to Abua/Odual people.

“It is only when there is crisis that these people can claim they have the votes, if election is peaceful, they cannot win any reasonable vote.

“Now that we have peace, PDP will win the day. We have to make sure that we sustain that peace. We will work with your political and traditional leaders to provide adequate security in this LGA because no meaningful development can come without peace.

“Presently, the administration of Governor Nyesom Wike is embarking on two major projects in this LGA, one is in Abua and the other is sited in Odual. There will be more development in Abua/Odual when these projects are completed.

“We are assuring you that we are going to give you more road networks in Abua/Odual LGA. The growth of every society depends on its physical infrastructure, and that’s what we are bringing to you.

“We have several other things that we will do for you. We will consult with your leaders to know the critical areas you want us to come in, and we will come in and address it, but for now what we need from you is your support, if you support us, we will continue to support you with better development.”
