Politics / PDP Crisis: Iyorchia Ayu Collected ₦100m, ₦1bn From A Gov – Wike Alleges by kahal29: 12:41pm On Oct 14, 2022
Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has raised a fresh allegation against the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu.

Wike accused Ayu of collecting N100 million and N1 billion from a governor.

In a media chat on Friday, the governor challenged the embattled PDP National Chairman to refute the corruption allegations against him.

According to Wike, “I don’t just come out and speak, let Ayu come out and say he did not collect N1billion. Let me tell you Ayu collected N100 million from a governor.

“If not for the love of this party, if we release what we have, Ayu’s children will go to him and deny him.”

Wike also vowed to spill more allegations if “we are pushed to the wall.”

The governor is spearheading PDP members calling for Ayu’s removal.

Many times, Wike had accused Ayu of mismanagement and fraudulent practices.

He also anchored his calls on the fact that PDP’s presidential candidate and National Chairman can’t come from the same region.

Politics / I’m Non-partisan’ — Sam Amadi Rejects Appointment Into PDP Campaign Council by kahal29: 1:45pm On Oct 11, 2022
Sam Amadi, a former chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), has rejected a role as director of research in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential campaign council.

In a letter dated October 10 and addressed to Aminu Tambuwal, governor of Sokoto and director-general of the campaign council, Amadi said he belongs to a number of organisations that are non-partisan.

While appreciating Tambuwal for the offer, the former NERC chairman said his rejection is not a vote of no confidence on the country’s major opposition party.

“I humbly want to decline the appointment, and hereby abstain from participating in such a role,” he said.

“The decision to decline the offer has stemmed from the conflicts of interest emanating from various responsibilities in which I act as a leader of different platforms where political neutrality and objectivity are required of me. These platforms are as follows: The Abuja School of Social and Political Thoughts (ASSPT).

“As director of the school, I bear the responsibility to lead a group of intellectuals and scholars of diverse political and ideological stripes with a commitment to rethink the nature of the social, political, and economic crises of statehood in Africa, and to develop new ideas and policies to transform Nigeria and other African societies.

“For some years I have been an analyst on Arise News, which I consider one of the most strategic institutions for national development and sane deliberative democracy through analytical news reporting.

“My role in that reputable media platform also requires non-partisanship, even as I am free to express my opinions.”

Politics / Igbos Would Be President After Me – Atiku by kahal29: 5:26pm On Sep 27, 2022
The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar has said the Igbos can only become President after he must have completed his tenure.

Atiku also vowed to prioritise developmental projects in Southeast and other regions when elected, saying that any project in any State is a favour to Nigeria.

Atiku, who was addressing Southeast PDP stakeholders in Enugu on Tuesday, said: “I am the stepping stone for Igbos to become President of Nigeria”.

The PDP candidate, who maintained that he would win the 2023 presidential polls, said his great relationship with the Igbos would continue until they assume the presidency after his tenure.

I’ve had close relationship with the Igbos and this influenced my choices of Senator Ben Obi and Mr. Peter Obi as my running mates in my two previous outings as presidential candidate. Again, I have chosen another great Igbo here (Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa) for the third time as my running mate.

“I have three Igbo children and I am saying this for the very first time in public. So, my relationship with Ndigbo did not start today,” Atiku said.

While promising to prioritise projects in Southeast, Atiku took a swipe at the All Progressives Congress(APC)-led administration for segregating some parts of the country with the paucity of projects.

“The second Niger bridge in Onitsha is not a favour to the Southeast, rather it is or should be seen as a favour to Nigeria. This is because it is not only the people of the Southeast that use the bridge,” Atiku said.

He also expressed concern over the ongoing sit-at-home in the region which he said had dealt a big blow to the economy of the region and the country at large, calling on elders in the region to speak out against it.

He said his administration would pay close attention to tackling insecurity, economic and other challenges bedeviling the country.

Politics / Wike: I Never Said Tinubu Offered Me Senate Ticket by kahal29: 4:25am On Sep 25, 2022
The Rivers State Government yesterday described as false media reports quoting Governor Nyesom Wike as saying that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, offered him a senatorial ticket.

The government, in a statement signed by Wike’s Special Assistant, Media, Kelvin Ebiri, said that there was no time during the governor’s media chat on Friday he made such a statement.

He said the story was false, baseless and ludicrous as the Rivers State governor “throughout the media chat never mentioned the name of the APC presidential candidate or alluded to him offering him a senatorial ticket.”

Attached to the statement was the transcript of Wike’s interview in which he said: ‘First of all, this is how you know those who are prepared to run an election. Some of them collected presidential form at the same time collected senatorial form. You’ll know that those people are not serious to run.

‘I never collected senatorial form. Even after the whole thing, people said come and go for Senate, I said no, I won’t do that. I’ve already made a commitment that this Senate ticket should be zoned to this area (Etche) because they’ve never had it before. I must not be in power.’

Ebiri urged the unsuspecting public not to give any credence to “this false, baseless and ill motivated reports.”

Meanwhile, Wike travelled to London shortly after his Friday media parley.

With him in London is Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State.

Politics / 10 Takeaways From Wike’s Media Chat On PDP Crisis by kahal29: 3:14pm On Sep 23, 2022
Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike on Friday held a media chat for almost two hours on Friday during which he addressed many issues on the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP).

Here are major takeaways from the chat that held many spell-bound:

1. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led the foundation for the crisis when it jettisoned zoning principle contained in its Constitution. The Presidential ticket was supposed to have been zoned exclusively to the South.

2. The PDP National Chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, is not a trustworthy character. He promised to resign if a Northern presidential candidate emerged, but had refused to fulfill his promise despite the emergence of Atiku Abubakar.

3. The convention that produced Atiku Abubakar was highly compromised and flawed by the actions of Ayu. He said: “It would have ended in crisis if not for the love I have for the PDP.”

4. Ayu deployed intimidation and abused his office when he convened many meetings in the houses of retired generals. The meetings, according to Wike, were ” to ensure that I did not emerge the flag bearer of the party. He even vowed to resign if I should win the party’s ticket.”

5. PDP presidential canndidate, Atiku Abubakar, is not a trustworthy character. He lacks integrity. Wike alleged: “He visited me after his emergence and promised that Ayu would resign, but he failed to actualise it. He also met us in London and promised that Ayu must go but we were surprised that he went to a gathering and cited constitutional issues.”

6. PDP is arrogant and needs restructuring. The Governor claimed: “A party that is in the opposition and serious to win an election cannot be as arrogant as the PDP. If the PDP cannot restructure itself to correct the marginalisation in the PDP, Nigerians are now doubting the party’s capacity to unite the country.”

7. Atiku is surrounded by those without much political value. “Those asking the party to sanction me especially Waziri from Yobe State lack electoral values. Since 1999, PDP has never won Yobe,” he stated.

8. PDP cannot dare sanction, let alone suspend me. “I dare the party to sanction me. They should do it. Who will sanction me? Those, who left the party cannot sanction me. If they do it, they know what I can do,” he warned.

9. No backing for Atiku until demand are met. “If at the end, the party refuses to meet our demand, we will meet again to take a decision on our next strategies for the election. Haven’t you seen where a senatorial candidate lost in an area while the governorship candidate from the same party won in that same place?”

10. There is nothing that justifies Ayu remaining in the office. Ayu should demonstrate that he loves the PDP by resigning. The NEC can meet and take the decision and later rectify it in a convention after the election.

Politics / Ayu is Very corrupt, he Collected N1bn from a PDP Presidential Aspirant - Wike by kahal29: 1:26pm On Sep 23, 2022
Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers, says Iyorchia Ayu, national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), received N1 billion from one of the presidential hopefuls in the party.

The governor made the allegation during a media chat on Friday.

He said Ayu is corrupt, and that the chairman cannot deny that he received the money but refused to remit it to the party’s account.

“Ayu is very corrupt. I’m totally informed. Ayu has the opportunity to challenge me, I will name,” he said.

Some of the governors can tell you. Will he deny the fact that he didn’t collect N1 billion from Lagos? Let him deny it, I will tell him who gave him the money not from the Lagos state government, the money was given to him in Lagos.

He met one of the presidential candidates and told him that he’s not sure these governors may want to sponsor the party.

That money did not enter into the account of PDP, but we are not attacking Ayu on that basis.”

Wike had contested the PDP presidential primary election in May but lost to Atiku Abubakar.

Other hopefuls in the primaries were Bukola Saraki, former senate president; Bala Mohammed, Bauchi governor; Udom Emmanuel, Akwa Ibom governor; Pius Anyim, Sam Ohuabunwa, Ayodele Fayose, and Dele Momodu.

Aminu Tambuwal, Sokoto governor, withdrew from the race and asked his supporters to vote for Atiku.

Politics / Bode George: If We Can’t Unify PDP, No Guarantee Atiku Will Unite Nigeria by kahal29: 9:41am On Sep 22, 2022
A chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has said that if members of the party cannot unify it at the moment, there is no guarantee that the presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar, can unify Nigeria when he becomes president.

George was commenting on the crisis rocking the party during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today.

On Wednesday, some members of Wike’s team vowed not to join Atiku campaign council until the party’s Nationla Chairman, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, resigns. But Atiku said he would not prevail on Ayu to step aside.

Speaking on the TV programme, George said, “Our candidate has this onus; he said that he is a unifier. If we cannot unify our party at this small level, what is the guarantee that when he gets there he will be ready to unify this country. Otherwise you will be talking of constitution.”

He stated that he was not consulted for nomination of members from Lagos State into the campaign council.

He added, “Was I consulted for nomination from Lagos State? All the other people were they consulted? If you want to do it on your own, good luck to you. Those are the things that we notice and we now decided that if they don’t want to us to participate in the national campaign then we must go back to the public and let them know.”

Politics / I Can’t Force Ayu To Resign, Atiku Replies Wike’s Group by kahal29: 4:52am On Sep 22, 2022
Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says he cannot make Iyorchia Ayu, national chairman of the party, resign his position.

The former vice-president said this in reaction to allies of Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers state, who said they would not participate in the campaign of Abubakar until Ayu leaves office.

Reacting in a statement on Wednesday, Abubakar said he is surprised by the withdrawal of Wike and his associates from the party’s campaign council.

“Early this morning, my attention was drawn to a news clip in which several very senior and influential members of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), addressed the press and, amongst other things, declared that they are withdrawing, forthwith, from the Presidential Campaign Council set up by our party to judiciously plan and prosecute the general elections set to hold in February and March 2023, on the one hand; and reiterated their earlier calls for the resignation or removal from office of the national chairman of our party, Senator Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, on the other hand,” he said.

“The people that addressed the press must have their reasons for withdrawing from the Presidential Campaign Council, and I will not speculate as to what those reasons may be.

“Personally, I am quite surprised with this withdrawal because, as I have been informed by officials of our party, apart from the Rivers State chapter of the PDP, all the remaining states of the federation submitted names of people who they wanted included in the Presidential Campaign Council.

“On the calls for the resignation or removal from office of our national chairman, however, I must reiterate what I have said severally in public and in private; the decision for Dr. Iyorchia Ayu to resign from office is personal to Dr. Ayu and, neither I nor anyone else can make that decision for him.

“As to the calls for the removal of Dr. Ayu from office, however, I will state that, as a committed democrat and firm believer in the rule of law and democratic tenets, and our party being one set up, organized and regulated by law and our constitution, it is my absolute belief that everything that we do in our party must be done in accordance with, and conformity to, the law and our constitution.

“If Dr. Ayu is to be removed from office, it must be done in accordance with the laws that set out the basis for such removal. In any event, you will all recall that the very body that is empowered by law to initiate this removal from office, has already passed a vote of confidence in him.

“Now, our nation is currently in the throes of a multidimensional crisis encompassing insecurity, economic meltdown, disunity and mutual mistrust and educational dislocations, to mention a few.

“I have a plan to address these issues and I have, graciously, been given the ticket to lead our great party in next year’s presidential elections, with the singular mandate to come and lead the efforts to cure these ills.”

“Every single person who loves this country, as I do, is needed for the arduous tasks that face us ahead as a nation, and this includes every member of the PDP.”

Abubakar asked Wike and his allies to retrace their steps and be part of the campaign council.

Wike’s Camp Withdraws from Atiku’Campaign Council, Insists Ayu Must Go

Members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP sympathetic to the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike in the early hours of Wednesday resolved not to participate in the activities of the party’s National Campaign Council in whatever capacity until the National Chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu resigns his position.

They insist that the former President of the Senate, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu must resign to pave way for an acting National Chairman of Southern Nigeria extraction to emerge and lead the party’s National Campaign Council for the presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

They say the resignation of Ayu whose hands have not been clean is necessary in order to ensure equity, justice and unity in the party.

With the campaigns for the 2023 general elections in Nigeria set to kick off in the next few days, all is not well with the country’s main opposition party, PDP as the crisis rocking the umbrella is far from over.

In spite of the vote of confidence passed on the Ayu-led National Working Committee by the recent meeting of the National Executive Committee of the party, these PDP members insist that “Ayu must go”.

Rising from their meeting held at the country home of Governor Wike, the PDP members who include founding members of the party, Governorship candidates, former Governors, former Ministers and leaders of the party from across the country in a resolution read by former Deputy National Chairman, Olabode George say their position is not negotiable as Ayu’s continuous stay in office undermines the constitution and unity of the party.

They are also accusing Iyorchia Ayu of compromise especially in the role he played during the conduct of the party’s May 28 and 29 Presidential Primary in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The PDP members are also quick to point out that their support for Governor Wike is not because he lost the Presidential Primary or that he was not picked as the Vice Presidential Candidate of the party but their stance for equity and justice in the PDP.

The latest development is surely another set back for the PDP in its quest to win the 2023 general elections in Nigeria.

And as the show down continues, political watchers warn that the party might just be the architect of its own defeat, if it fails to put its house together.
