i can be able to fund the research myself if i get a job and am trusting GOD for that...am through with my academic year in my masters program and by GOD s grace came out tops in the faculty with a distinction but no help from the university either |
reyscrub:A disease with 180,000 deaths per year and with approximately 4 million sufferers in Nigeria alone is not to be taken lightly with. Dear Nairalander, I have consulted several research institutes in Nigeria, they showed interest in the work but they insist that i buy the consumables for the research myself....they are only willing to assist with facilities and equipment I also tried contacting several NGOs and even some Sickle Cell Foundations on the research but no response I even went to the extent of trying to reach out to my state governor and some senators but no response What are we trying to do here in simple terms? Gene therapy for Sickle Cell Anemia Disease is still in its embryonic stage and also there is the fear of wrongful gene insertion into house keeping genes which can prove fatal So the panacea may currently lie with what is called Fetal Hemoglobin Induction Fetal Hemoglobin Induction in simple terms is trying to induce the production of the hemoglobin we all had as a fetus......which for people with HbSS...will make them not to fall sick and thus improve their clinical profile For people with HbSS the genes responsible for the Fetal Hemoglobin (the gamma globin genes) begin to shut down after birth and thus the onset of crisis from about 6 months So amelioration may lie in trying to switch on these genes back (upregulation) in order to improve the clinical profile of patients....thus currently there is a rush worldwide for pharmacologic agents that will be able to do this Hydroxyurea is not that effective because it can only induce fetal hemoglobin to about 17% and we need about 32% Dioscovite is basically KCN an antisickling agent |
Please Nairalanders, is there any way one can get funds in the form of grant or loan to do sickle cell disease research here in Nigeria?......the research is geared towards finding a better pharmacologic agent that is better than Hydroxyurea for fetal hemoglobin induction for the management of Sickle Cell Disease (hydroxyurea is cytotoxic and only effective in about 50% of cases)....we will be using also a plant named Hymenocardia acida (the catechins fraction) and we will be doing a cell culture from PBMCs isolated from peripheral blood that will lead to generation of Erythroid Progenitor Stem Cells (EPSCs) .....the total funds for the research will cost about 2000usd and we are looking for a WAY to go about it...thank you |
Nairalanders what do you say?

orbitame2011:details (cv) sent...thanks |
i can and i reside in abuja |
go to your state's liason office in abuja and get it the same day...you will require at least 2k, two passport photographs, the name of your village chief/oba/emir etc...thats all |
same thing here.....went to the fsb, abuja yesterday and they have not heard anything about the scholarship!....they asked me whether i was sure it was on their website!.....it is my opinion that the program was initiated from the federal ministry of education, abuja but it has not yet filtered down to its subsidiary, the fsb.....they advised i should wait a bit (a week or two) |
will go to federal scholarship board.....if i am successful in getting a copy of the form.....will paste here |
IrradiatoR:Has anyone obtained a copy of the form ? Could you share please.....it is the same form everywhere (so i heard)....having obtained the form we could still follow the departmental process because it requires an endorsement by your departmental HOD |
IrradiatoR: |
please forward to andico34@gmail.com......thanks |

Raymondenyi:thanks for the hint...quite sad....for a disease affecting 5 million nigerians |
Raymondenyi:seconded, as rightly said by Raymondenyi ,this is no new discovery because the major drawback still remains- "sibling donors" etc. the cure to sickle cell anemia(sca) could come through using gene delivery therapy using IPSCs for instance, but we have to overcome the physiological hurdles associated with vector design and delivery. question is "why are introduced corrected genes readily taken up in murine models than in human models?'' Amelioration still remains the only feasible option for now-drug repositioning: introducing an already FDA approved drug that will switch on the gamma globin genes that are responsible for the production of fetal hemoglobin (which will bring about a greater clinical wellbeing) for SCA patients, hydoxyurea only achieves 17%! we need about 32% to achieve this, this is what we are working on in our research for we are looking for funding. nigeria is not research inclined. i may be wrong |
Please Nairalanders is there any NGO or research body that can help with this?....Thank you |
look!...the pikin resemble PEJ well well ![]() |
This was recently sent in by a friend whose mum (a matron and midwife) delivered a two headed baby in the local cottage hospital in Jigawa State. It is the first time I am seeing such in Nigeria and felt I should share....Please pardon the pix

yemi2plus:LWKMD!.....the female dog is thin because it just had a litter (it is a lactating mother)....and thats why the kitten is able to get milk from her...they normally lose much weight as a result if not well fed as a result |

Debeloved87:am not a pastor.....but let me give a contribution.....the BIBLE should not be read in the literal sense but the actual greek/hebrew meanings of the word should be translated and then the actual meaning deciphered in the context......an unbelieving wife/husband....does not fully mean he/she must be born again but also includes unity in purpose i.e oneness in vision or divine purpose so.....the pastor is partly correct...how? if the "unbelieving wife" ...files "for a divorce"...or "leaves" the husband (sole action must be hers and hers alone)....then the husband is no longer bound to that marriage...(he is still bound before GOD !)....but he is free to remarry ...and not the other way round......i can clarify if there are questions ...thanks |
