Jesus in today's Gospel presents two contrasting personalities: one faithfully obeying the law to the smallest detail and the other considering himself to be a sinner because he served the interest of the Roman exploiters. What is striking, however, is the difference between their manner of praying. The Pharisee hardly prays at all. By boasting about his "righteousness", he simply pleases himself and not God. He is, in effect, denying that he needs God. He also exalts himself at the expense of others. The parable immediately makes clear that he entered the Temple without humility and love. He is the centre of his own thoughts and self-appraisal. Everything he did - the fasting, the paying of tithes - was good. But all the goodness of these works was, however undone by his pride: he attributed merit to himself and he had contempt for others. Both humility and charity were lacking, and without these there can be neither good works nor any virtue. In contrast, the tax collector humbly acknowledges his sinfulness and sincerely begs God's forgiveness. This is the essence of true prayer - a simple acknowledgement of one's sinfulness and nothingness before God manifesting one's need for God. This is the point of the prophet Hosea in the first reading. He enjoins us to return to the Lord. "Though He has torn us to pieces, He will heal us."
