Guys don't get spurred to become successful just because of a woman.
Power, prestige, recognition and social status are the major catalysts. A woman is more like the icing (this shouldn't be misinterpreted as derogatory).

These catalysts coupled with greed fuel gamblers, and unlike womanisers, smokers and alcoholics, whose addictions yield no fruits a gambler is more likely to stick to his addiction for the sake of possible financial returns.
Dealing with losing money requires an emotional outlet that gives an instant reprieve. Here the other addictions come in to serve this purpose.
It's a horrendous cycle.
