The special is basically the real episode 12 of the first season that they couldn't produce due to the staff falling sick, with a recap of the previous episodes in the first half.

I don't think you're trying to downplay anything. Your statement would actually be a nice compliment, if it was true. It simply is not. If you want to say Martin is inspired by Tolkien, say that. But implying that A Song of Ice and Fire is basically synonymous to Lord of The Rings is a grossly inaccurate statement that is born out of ignorance or lack of understanding of the individual content of both titles. It's not even heavily inspired by LotR.

What most of you children don't understand is, no story is original, even Tolkien borrowed. Before lord of the rings, there have always been wizard, orcs, elves, Tolkien just mashed everything together and made a movie out of it.
