butanep:What is this one saying, when has anyone ever gotten a job based on CV alone. You obviously don't even understand what is being discussed here. Go and read my submissions again, this time read it with understanding. I won't explain this to you again, if you're a recruiter please confront me with facts, stop giving me your invalid opinion that isn't helping anyone. |
Medley:Like I said on the other thread, don't let anyone deceive you. if you're a RECENT graduate with a STELLAR CGPA please include it. You have more to lose by not including it than if you do. Any recruiter that gets pissed because you did, isn't someone you want to work with in the first place. It is no longer necessary when you have gained experience. I know the opportunity I lost because I didn't have such so no one should come here and talk what they have no idea about. If I want to recruit for a role and I am down to about three strong candidates with the same skill set, I'll be naturally biased towards the one with a stellar CGPA. Once a recruiter is biased in his mind, it translates to a hiring decision in favor of who he likes. Even in roles that require hard skills e.g IT, please still leave the CGPA there as long as you're a fresh graduate with stellar academic performance. After all the skills evaluation they may still need a differentiating factor. At the end of the day, like someone said you have nothing to lose. You will lose more by not including it than by including it. Okay, I have started sounding like a broken record so I'll stop ![]() |
ekanDamie:What other proof of performance can a fresh graduate bring to the table in this Nigeria. It's not like we have internship opportunities in all courses. A recruiter saying he doesn't want to see your CGPA should not peg a minimum class of degree. If he does that and then chides you for putting CGPA, go and check his result, you'll understand why. Like I said earlier, after some experience, you should now remove the CGPA and focus on the experience part. |
NemB:Thank you for this. Many people with their Ignorance want to lead others astray.... ![]() |
keishik:Precisely, I was actually referring to wannabes like us ![]() |
keishik:Freelance web development/programming can turn you into a millionaire if you know your onions. I was looking at a client who had paid out over 500K and I saw that only one person( a developer) earned about 320k from him since 2013. That means an average of 100k per year, and the dude was an Indian. Tech talents are in short supply, and they that know their code, shall become millionaires... at least in Naira. The real way to earn money as a freelancer is to skill up oh.. ![]() |
uzolexis:A professionally written CV is never a bad investment. What you're probably not getting is that a CV is your advertisement, there are people who have mastered the art. If you have the cash please let them do it for you, or at least get a free critique so you know where to improve. All you have to do is provide them the key details they need, and let them use their creativity to rebrand you. I am planning on working with a professional to revamp my LinkedIn profile and CV, and it's not because I can't speak or write very well, but I may not be very savvy with HR lingo that can send the right message. Except you have some exceptional skills and experience, you need serious packaging. |
Christeety:Leave all those ones suffering from inferiority complex to tell him to remove his CV. I wish I had a CGPA like that to flaunt when I was at his level, I know the kind of companies I would have started with. After a year or two of solid experience, it's now Okay to remove CGPA and class of degree but any fresh graduate with a good academic record that doesn't flaunt it, isn't doing himself any good at all quote me any where. |
Mrokaykay:You have a right to your opinion. Google sample fresh graduate CV template, and you'll see CGPA in almost all of them. Everyone is trying to get an edge, why should someone hide what may give him the edge. Visit Schlumberger graduate website and see their graduate recruitment form, they have even removed 2.1 as a criteria and instead replaced it with CGPA 4.0 and above. Meaning it's not just Okay to get a 2.1 they want to see stellar grades. When trying to sell yourself as a fresh graduate, you have to put your best foot forward and that includes academic performance. Enough said, if you have it flaunt it, any recruiter telling you otherwise is suffering from inferiority complex period. @Op be careful of the advice you listen to, I have been on the other side of the table and I can confidently tell you that your CV is the single most important document you can present, so please by all means flaunt your achievement, you worked hard for it, employers need to see it. |
Mrokaykay:Wrong very necessary, he is a fresh graduate, his academic records are his selling points. |
Naaseer01:Find a way to make that CV one page. Remove irrelevant information. WAEC, please nobody needs that. Change your page margins in word to narrow so it could take more content then convert to pdf again. Bottom line is, remove irrelevant content. Even with some experience my CV is just two pages. That your career objective nearly resemble cover letter, bros you don't need that to be too long. Short and straight to the point is better. Like someone said, just add "references available on request" No one will call your references except you're being considered for employment. Ehen let me add, as a fresh graduate after your academic qualifications, please let's see your skills. Then please try and indicate what level of proficiency you have with the skills and software you listed. Strong knowledge, working knowledge, basic knowledge etc. You can Google these words to have an idea then properly estimate yourself. If I was a recruiter looking at that CV I'll be wondering what you mean by proficiency, I need to know know how good you are and how much training will be required. That preface thingy should be reformatted it's eating too much space. Work experience should come last except you've had some sound job related work experience. Overall you did a good job, way better than some I've been unfortunate to review sometime back ![]() |
Unity19:Thank you. The real issue here is that it's the forces of corruption that are at play. What amazes me is that, do we even have laws in this country that can check these kind of issues. What Nigeria truly needs are strong institutions and revamped laws. Economic policies that work in other climes cannot work in Nigeria, nothing works here if it doesn't allow us to cut corners and have undue advantage. We are our own worst enemies, we just like to shout government, as if we don't know it's the same wicked folks like the BDC operators that are in the govt. |
wman:The Upwork desktop app is for your own good o. Should there be dispute you can still get paid if it goes in your favour. At least the desktop app, does not make it compulsory to take webcam face shots. Try working with crossover.com and you'll see the difference. |
victor101:Thank you for saying this. Yes I know people got egos, yes I know people can be rude, but at the end of the day let us value ourselves as Nigerians. Having worked in a distributed team with talented folks from around the world including the US, I can categorically say that the only difference between a Nigerian and an American or European is training. They are not more brilliant, they are simply better trained. If you doubt my words, simply take a look at Andela, and see how they have trained Nigerians and are exporting them to the world. We should not insult ourselves, we should also not belittle ourselves. Let's treat one another with respect and the world will treat us with the same respect. If you just joined upwork, don't despair.... remember you're competing against professionals from around the world. Be proud to be a Nigerian, leave your profile that way make sure you highlight your skills, you cannot be a jack of all trade, you will only end up a master of none. If you're a writer try carving out a niche for yourselves. For guys in technical support and customer service, we also have hubstaff, toptal and crossover platforms.(all are dot com domains). Please fell free to use me as a resource on anything crossover.com Stay safe and have fun guys and gals. |
Can this thread be shut down please? ![]() Personally, I don't like calling out names when issues like this arise, so no one should quote me out of context ![]() Upwork is a buyers market, and there are employers who would pay peanuts and still demand quality work like our arrogant friend here. However, I would like to point out that if you don't like someone's rates, please just ignore their offer. Pride goeth before a fall, and a haughty spirit before destruction. I don't believe in confronting people with the truth because soon enough the truth will confront them by itself. Anyone who feels he is too important to explain to folks in a forum why he can't offer good rates for a job can go to hell in my opinion. Arrogance is an attitude that leads people to begin to overestimate their importance and ultimately end in doom. My take is simple, if we can not focus on the purpose of this thread, we might as well shut it down. First it was those that wanted to defraud the system, now it is those that can't hide their stinking attitude. What are we going to see next ![]() |
prettythicksme:Even the devil is laughing, or are you his elder brother ![]() |
4dor:I meant DORMICILLIARY account. Don't transfer to your Naira account oh, otherwise you're on your own... ![]() |
If you are a high earner on upwork.com you can use Skrill to transfer to your dorm account. The advantage is that you can exchange your funds with peace of mind at the available parallel market rate. but be ready to lose at least $30 per transaction. The best way to enjoy this will be to accumulate your earnings on Up work to at least a $1000 before sending to Skrill. |
victor101:Deleting the thread won't solve the problem, no matter what you do, there will still be some folks who would decide to cheat their way through. Technology is getting advanced everyday, and sooner than later they will be caught. Just try to moderate the thread as much as possible by calling out anyone who posts such information about breaking up work rules. Together we can make things better for ourselves. Thank you. |
stagger:Thank you very much.. Nigerians don't seem to see anything wrong with bending the rules, maybe they need international exposure to really help them understand the damage they do to our reputation online. When I got a remote job with a software company, I decided to share the opportunity here, only to start getting calls on how they can dupe the interview process, which made me delete my original Nairaland.com account I opened since 2008. I just couldn't take the risk as the moniker resembled my name. I can't begin to tell you the comment some colleague made on our Skype chat, with regards to Nigeria. One simple example, on this particular day, we were discussing a Ransom email that a client of us received from Russia, when one dude from the US says "This Russian dude doesn't know what he is doing, he needs to go and learn how to scam from those Nigerians." it took all the will power in me not to reply him, after all my brothers won't learn to stop trying to cheat. May God help us redeem this terrible image that we keep portraying of our beloved country. Now we have to work twice as hard to prove to international employers that we can deliver without scamming them. Thank you again for speaking out. I get interviews on upwork.com and my profile is proudly Nigerian. |
tonyx4x44:Bros am interested in the grammerly premium. I've been using the free version and it's been really great. I really wonder the algorithm they used in designing that software. |
keishik:Very valid points. It's a pity what Yahoo boyz have done to our online reputation, jobs that come easily to freelancers from other countries may be difficult for us to get. The burden of questionable integrity is really not easy to bear, but I decided that I'll do this the right way or not at all. @all, please try not to beat the guidelines, whatever gains you get can only be temporary, just think of how you would feel if a client takes your work without payment. Let us be our brother's keeper by not blocking the road that has brought relief to so many people. |
I've seen a lot of great and not so great advice on upwork.com, and it's really great that people are sharing their knowledge here. My only point is that, being a Nigerian should not stop you from getting good gigs or even long term employment. If you want to really become a freelancer you must first understand what freelancing is all about. It's risks, benefits and pit falls. Starting out is very hard, but once you get going it can really become rewarding. The reason most clients don't want Nigerians is because of our well known penchant for anything fraudulent. We may see it as survival but it's just an evil wind that ultimately blows no one no good. However the top companies, I mean the ones you really want to have as clients don't really care about your nationality as long as you have the hard skills. A good name is really to be preferred than riches, some of us are suffering from discrimination arising from other people's actions. Let's try and keep our integrity on the platform. I strongly advice against cheating on tests, those tests are simple enough. If you are not confident then take the test and practice on your weak areas, that way you can become better. |
wewe1:Yes seriously.... I hope this Russia conspiracy theories aren't true otherwise, the world may want to get ready for the worst. http://gizmodo.com/this-is-probably-why-half-the-internet-shut-down-today-1788062835 |

WackyJ1:She met the guy in a different school, and the next time they saw about a month later she DID IT. She denied enjoying it claiming the dude forced her, but the whole story she told me was simply a matter of the guy being sharp, and she being willing case closed. Yes, 5 years is a lot to let go of, but I value my sanity, and if I can't trust her, I cannot love her. Well, we don't talk the last time I heard from her was when she was about getting married last year. Funny thing was that when she was about getting married everyone was surprised I wasn't the one, and when her sister asked her what happened, she made up some story that my mother was the cause. Only me and her elder brother really knew what went down. Only God can save someone from a cheating gf. After her I can't even hold a relationship for 3 months, once the fire dies down I am already looking for a way to RUN. |
Yewandequeen:On the contrary, I am more inclined to forgive my wife especially if there are kids involved, although it will take time and therapy. However, if gf does it, that will be the end of whatever I feel for her, but out of decency I'll end the relationship, rather than keep her to satisfy my urges... ![]() |
sheyizy1:Problem is there is no better candidate, it's just a matter of time, chance, and circumstances. |
WackyJ1:Bros I had absolute trust in her, I was her first, if you know what I mean. She was the perfect definition of decent and homely. No, she did it with a guy she barely knew, who her friend introduced to her while I was away serving my father's land. Worse was that she did it on our 5th year of dating. I just couldn't understand how she held out that long only to get influenced by her friend. After she told me, I could tell she was very sorry for her actions and she knew it was a mistake, she practically confessed to all my friends who she knew could talk to me but I just couldn't take it. Problem was, I was the one woman at a time kinda guy back then. Anyways like I tell all present ladies in my life, if you do the crime, better die with the guilt and don't tell me, I don't want no mother confessor. Only problem is, I can't seem to trust any beautiful or ugly girl for that matter anymore. The ex thing was what I learnt from further experience in the school of dating. After Exes, fear her friends too, especially the close ones they can make or Mar your relationship. ![]() |
adepeter26:Story for the gods. I don't trust girls, I don't have an iota of trust for girls who keep in touch with their ex like their life depended on it. I know in some cases the friendship is there oh, but my default setting is never to trust exes |
Daricon:I'll be frank with you, that girl to me is childish and doesn't know what she wants. Personally I've learnt a lot, and till today I still find it difficult to trust a lady, even the slightest red signal is enough to send you parking. Now to fall in love is like an herculean task, I can't stand the chance of being vulnerable ever again. You have tried to have tolerated this lady for that long, if na me she suppose know where her space dey for my life by now. Any girl I am dating cannot keep contact with her ex, talk less of being close... The fear of an ex is the beginning of wisdom. ![]() |
