The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has asked President Bola Tinubu to change the newly assented Students Loans Act to grant for indigent students. “This would have been better if we are giving it to those set of students who are very poor, it should be called a grant, not a loan,” ASUU National President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke said on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme today. “It should be called a grant since it is coming from the Federation Account and not that (after) these people have access it and when they are graduating, they have heavy loads behind them and within two years, if they don’t pay, they go to jail. That’s why we’re talking about collective bargaining, you have views from all the sides.” On Monday, Tinubu signed into law the Students Loans Bill in fulfilment of a promise he made during his campaign. The bill was sponsored by the Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, who is now the President’s Chief of Staff. Now an Act, the law provides for interest-free loans to poor Nigerian students. However, the ASUU President said the loan is impracticable. He said the loan is “not sustainable”. Osodeke said, “The idea of student loan came in 1972 and it was in a bank established. People who took loans never paid, you can go and investigate. In 1994, 1993, the military enacted Decree 50 also set up a Students’ Loan Board. The National Assembly domesticated it in 2004 and within a year, it went off. The money disappeared. We want to see how this one will be different.” According to him, there are more than one million students in Nigerian public universities and the loan cannot adequately cater for students’ tuition The ASUU President said the conditions for the loan are “not practicable”, adding that more than 90% of students won’t meet the “stringent requirements” to access and repay the loan. “We, as a union also did research of countries all over the world, of people who have benefited from this loan, they were committing suicide. Recently, (President Joe) Biden is trying to pay back the bank loans of some who borrowed in the US,” he said. “It is better to look for alternative means of funding education than to encumbering students whose parents earn N30,000 a month with a loan. |
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike and his four other friends in the G5 to come up with another aggrieved group within opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to make winning the 2027 presidential election a smooth ride for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Akpabio, a former Akwa Ibom State governor, spoke on Sunday at a thanksgiving reception held at Wike’s private residence on Ada-George Road, in his hometown, Rumueprikom in the Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of the oil-rich South-South state. “I want to thank you for all your efforts to bring justice to Nigeria,” Akpabio told Wike who backed the return of power to Southern Nigeria and supported APC’s candidate, Bola Tinubu against his party’s choice, Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 presidential election. “And I want to thank the G5 Governors,” the Senate President said whilst addressing the G5 or the Integrity Group made up of five major aggrieved politicians within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who kicked against the emergence of Abubakar in the last February 25 poll. “We are very delighted, we are proud to have G5. Please, ensure that in 2027, another G5 emerges so that APC will continue to do well in this country. And if you like, you can add two more, make it G7 and not only G5,” Akpabio added. |
The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Corruption (ICPC) on Thursday arraigned Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, former Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), his three sons and a daughter in-law . They were arraigned in a 17-count charge bordering on official corruption, abuse of office and forgery.before Justice Inyang Ekwo of a Federal High Court, Abuja, The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the defendants, who were all in court, were arraigned alongside the six family companies. In the new charge, Ojerinde was accused of selling off a Federal Government’s property; House No. 4, Ahomko Drive, Achimota Phase Two, Accra in Ghana. The house was said to have been sold out by Ojerinde and his sons after it was forfeited to the Federal Government in order to conceal corrupt benefits. The charge also indicated that some of the sons acted as agents to facilitate quick sales of the House in Ghana. He was alleged to have engaged in the act while being a public officer contrary to Section 26 (1) ( c) and punishable under Section 24 of the ICPC Act 2000. The former JAMB registrar was also alleged to have used fake names to acquire companies, opened bank accounts, acquired petrol stations and bought landed property in Ilorin, Kwara while being a public officer. They, however, pleaded not guilty to all the counts. Counsel to the ICPC, Ebenezer Shogunle, opposed bail plea for Prof. Ojerinde and Oluwaseun Adeniyi Ojerinde, his son, on the grounds of their refusal to honour series of invitations by the anti-graft commission as well as likelihood of filing more charges against them. Justice Ekwo asked Shogunle if there were pending criminal charges against them and if they were admitted to bail by the courts and the lawyer answered in the affirmative. Shogunle said that Ojerinde was facing similar trial before a Niger State High Court, Minna and another case before a Federal High Court in Abuja. The judge consequently admitted them to bail in the terms previously granted by the courts. He also admitted the three sons and daughter in-law to a bail in the sum of N20 million and a surety each in the like sum who must own a landed property in Abuja with verified proof of ownership. Justice Ekwo directed that the original title documents of the property must be deposited with the court while the defendants were ordered to deposit their traveling documents with the court registrar and must not travel out of the country without the permission of the court. He ordered Ojerinde, who wept profusely in the open court, to immediately attend to his ill-health so as to be able to stand the trial as required by law. The judge fixed Nov. 13, Nov. 14, Nov. 15 and Nov. 16 for commencement of trial. NAN reports that the three sons, charged by the ICPC, are Olumide Abiodun Ojerinde, Adedayo Ojerinde and Oluwaseun Adeniyi Ojerinde while the daughter- in- law is Mary Funmilola Ojerinde. The companies include Doyin Ogbohi Petroleum Ltd, Cheng Marbles Limited, Sapati International Schools Ltd, Trillium Learning Centers Ltd, Standout Institutes Ltd and ESLI Perfect Security Printers Ltd.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed its dissatisfaction with the submission of 18,000 blurred Incident Report (IReV) sheets by the Labour Party (LP), describing it as an ambush. On Thursday, the Labour Party (LP) submitted 18,000 polling unit results that were blurred during the presidential election to the tribunal. LP presidential candidate Peter Obi has challenged the election process that resulted in President Bola Tinubu's victory, as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The defendants in the lawsuit include INEC, Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and the All Progressives Congress (APC). Reporting from the proceedings, it has been disclosed that Onyechi Ikpeazu, the legal representative for the petitioners, has submitted data analysis reports on the presidential election. These reports were presented through Eric Ofoedu, a professor of mathematics at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, who was also a witness for the LP. Ikpeazu revealed that the documents included inquiries into IReV score sheets from Rivers and Benue states. The petitioners have submitted 18,000 polling units with blurred results obtained from the IReV portal. The admissibility of the documents was objected to by Abubakar Mahmoud, who serves as the lead counsel for INEC. According to Mahmoud, the situation was akin to an ambush. He further stated that the LP had provided a copy of the witness' statement only a few hours prior to the start of the proceedings. Admittedly, my team and I are facing a challenge and are unsure of the next steps to take. According to him, it is an ambush. It was expected that the counsel would have presented the statement earlier, in accordance with the court's regulations and in the spirit of collaboration. The meal ought to have been delivered promptly to prevent this surprise attack. Mahmood has made a plea to the court, requesting that the LP be compelled to allow the INEC legal team a 48-hour period to review the documents that have been submitted. Despite objections from Wole Olanipakun, the counsel for Tinubu and Shettima, they ultimately agreed to hear the witness's statement and suggested a later time for cross-examination. Arise News TV journalist Lumnie Edevbie was summoned as a witness for the LP and was presented as evidence by Patrick Ikweato, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN) who is part of the party's legal team. During the trial, a witness presented a video statement from Yakubu Mahmood, the chairman of INEC, which was recorded at Chatham House in London on January 17. In the video, Mahmood expressed confidence in the reliability and efficiency of the bimodal voter accreditation system (BVAS). According to all respondents, they objected to the adoption of the statement of the witness and the viewing of the video. The session was adjourned by the five-man panel, headed by Haruna Tsammani, until Thursday. This was done to allow for the cross-examination of the witness and further hearing of the petition.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu has granted Nigeria’s first private crude oil export licence to Jack Rich, a presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the previous presidential election and a prominent party chieftain. The licence, which the Federal Government issued through the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NMRDPA), permits Jack Rich’s company, Belema Sweet Terminal, to run a crude oil export terminal in Rivers State with a capacity to export over 400,000 barrels per day. It is worth noting that Jack Rich previously contested the presidential primaries alongside Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Yemi Osinbajo, and other candidates last year. This decision to reward Jack Rich with the first private crude oil export licence raises concerns about potential favouritism and nepotism within the political landscape. The timing and circumstances surrounding the granting of the licence, particularly considering Jack Rich’s affiliation with the APC and his participation in the party’s internal processes, suggest that this may be a move by Tinubu to continue to give the political elites and allies undue advantage to Nigeria’s wealth unfettered rather than a merit-based decision. Such actions erode trust and transparency in the political system and raise questions about the fairness and integrity of the process.

Eddie Howe's team secured their place at Europe's top table and can now look forward to being in the group stages of the Champions League. This will be the first time United have enjoyed such an honour since 2003 under Sir Bobby Robson The Magpies dominated the first half against Leicester with 14 goal attempts but could not find a way past Daniel Iverson and the two teams went in level at the break. Newcastle continued to pile the pressure on after the break but could not find a way through. But it didn't matter. Newcastle have made it to the promised land and secured that coveted place in Europe's top competition. |

The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Rivers State, Magnus Abe says he is withdrawing his petition against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) challenging the March 18 governorship election which produced Siminaliayi Fubara of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the Governor-Elect. Abe made this known while addressing party faithful at the SDP state head office in Port Harcourt, the state capital on Sunday. He said his action was borne out of his love for the state and his interest in moving the state forward. Abe said, “The interest of our state has always been and will remain paramount to me. We cannot at any stage of our politics put our own interest above the interest of those who have sacrificed so much to follow us. “We cannot also put our ego above every other consideration in our State. We must learn as politicians to be pragmatic and put the interest of Rivers State and Rivers people above every other interests. “Having taken a very clear review of the situation in the state and what is happening in the state, I have decided, in consultation with the party both at the national and at the state, that I, Senator Magnus Ngei Abe, will withdraw my petition at the Election Petitions Tribunal in the interest of those who have suffered and sacrificed in support of our cause. “More importantly, it is the interest of our state so that we begin to reduce the bickering and confusion that is in our state, in order to give all of us opportunity to be able to move forward with our lives. “I take this decision very conscious of the pain, of the trauma and of the confusion it will bring to all of you.” Abe also denied allegations by the state government that he was demarketing the state in anticipation of a Federal Government appointment. He maintained that those who blocked a major road in Port Harcourt at INEC’s gate and arrested lawyers in their hotel rooms from getting materials that could help their case in the courts are those who are demarketing the state.

Stephen Muoka, the originator of “Eluu P”, a term that went viral after the February presidential election, has warned against unauthorised use of the ‘trademark’. Mouka, a supporter of Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), was captured in a video chanting ‘Eluu P’ while other supporters of the party counted the votes. In a “cease-and-desist” notice issued through his solicitors, Mouka claimed he has “started taking steps to establish a marketing & media business for the purpose of offering marketing, branding, and related services to the members of the public under the ‘ELUU P’ brand”. “To achieve this, our client has expended resources—and continues to expend resources—on developing and promoting the ‘ELUU P’ brand as his trademark,” the notice reads. Advertisement “Our client has in fact started using the ‘ELUU P’ trademark in connection with his services, including brand influencing, content creation, and entertainment. “Other areas of business interest include food & drinks and fashion. Some of our client’s promotional content are published on our client’s Facebook page and Instagram handle eluupofficial, with over 222,000 followers and over 1 million reach respectively. “Our client has applied to the trademark, patent and design registry for the registration of “ELUU P” as a trademark. Also, apart from being emotionally invested in the “ELUU P” brand, our client genuinely—and more than ever before—believes in the vision to transform Nigeria from consumption to production. Therefore, the “ELUU P” brand represents, to him, what is possible in Nigeria when we put our creativity and energy to work. “Our client is entitled to institute an action against any person who passes off the “ELUU P” brand. Under section 3 of the Trade Marks Act, the law that governs trademarks in Nigeria, a proprietor of an unregistered trademark is entitled to a right of action and remedies in respect of the unauthorized use of his or her unregistered trademark.” The solicitors said while Mouka is open to collaboration on the use of the ‘trademark’, any unauthorised use, whether for commercial purposes or in any other manner, amounts to a “gross violation of its client’s right” with a risk of legal action.

A Ugandan pastor, David Ochieng, has shut down his church after winning over 100 million from a sports bet. However, the church members were left in disbelief and confusion. He closed down the building and left members of his congregation stranded when they came for midweek service. Members of the church who visited the premises were shocked when they saw that the gate was locked and did not know what to do. Pastor David was contacted and confessed to choosing the work as a means of survival and not that he was genuinely called. He explained, “I must admit that I opened this church due to ‘greed’ but not anointing. I saw how several pastors make money through the crowds they have and making fake prophesies to attract more,” he narrated. “As time passed, I realized this wasn’t right, I started having sleepless nights, and I would always have weird dreams. Before I opened this church, everything was normal on my side; even without money, I didn’t get any strange dreams, so I decided to abolish this and look for other ways of making money. “So one day, a notification about fixed games pops up on my phone. It was an interesting story, and I followed it to the dot. I got the website link and sacrificed the 1m I had to pay for these games, surprisingly, it took me about a month to receive the games. “They told me they had issues with their system and the process of securing games takes time, I almost gave up and called them scammers but they contacted me with the details, and wow! I went full swing. I got odd of 700. “I had to stop the church because I had got my ways of making money, until now, I have made a lot that I have made a lot that I never imagined I would ever get in my life.” “I had to stop the church because I had got my ways of making money, until now, I have made a lot that I have made a lot that I never imagined I would ever get in my life.”

The Gubernatorial candidate of the APC Pastor Tonye Cole has called on all Kalabari candidates from other political parties, to join him save Rivers State. He made this call during the APC Asari Toru L.G.A Campaign Flag off rally, which held in Buguma; the traditional headquarters of the Kalabari kingdom. The APC Flagbearer highlighted the importance of unity in any cause and encouraged the kalabaris to rally around him as he seeks to change the fortunes of Rivers State people through massive human capital development and purposeful leadership. Arch. Tonye Cole narrated his encounter with the 1999 guber candidate, Chief Ebenezer Isokariari. “Many years ago, Ebenezer Isokariari on Kalabari ground, at Abalama, said something out of anger. Out of frustration from the disunity that led to his defeat, Chief Isokariari proclaimed that for 24 years the Kalabari’s will not be Governor. He spoke as a Kalabari man on Kalabari soil, in reaction to the betrayal of Kalabari people. This happened 24 years ago.” “I went to see Chief Ebenezer Isokariari in Lagos, and when I went, he said to me, ‘you are the first person to come and see me regarding this proclamation. I regret making it, when I made it, I did not know it will happen like this’. This is 24 years; We have suffered as a people, 24 years we have punished ourselves, 24 years we have killed ourselves for other people, 24 years we have fought, 24 years we’ve spilt blood, 24 years we have gone backwards. This year it has ended. They said Kalabari can never come together. That is false. Kalabari is united.” A statement signed by the Director of Media and Strategic Communications in the Tonye Cole/Barikor Gubernatorial Campaign Council, Wabiye Idoniboyeobu added that Tonye Cole urged O.J Flag Amachree, Dawari George, Sobomabo Jackrich, Chief Dumo Lulu Briggs and all Kalabari politicians and stakeholders to join him in his quest to redeem the lost glory of the Kalabaris; and assured the people that a Tonye Cole government will be one where the common man, even those in the rural communities, will feel a sense of belonging and see opportunities to have a dignified life.

Offa Bank Robbery: Suspect Narrates How Disgraced Cop Abba Kyari Offered N10m, Visa to Implicate Saraki. About 10 persons were feared killed while other residents of Offa sustained serious injuries. One of the Principal suspects in the Offa Bank Robbery case at the Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin, Mr. Ayoade Akinrinbosun, on Wednesday told the court how the former Commander, IRT squad, ACP Abba Kyari, offered him N10m to implicate former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, in the armed robbery case. He said Kyari promised to give him a visa to any country of his choice if he supported the move to implicate Dr. Saraki, but he turned down the offer. Five suspects, Ayoade Akinnibosun, Ibikunle Ogunleye, Adeola Abraham and two others were charged to court by the police for criminal conspiracy to rob the banks, murder of nine policemen and other citizens, and illegal possession of firearms. During the incident, about 10 persons were feared killed while other residents of Offa sustained serious injuries. However, during cross examination at the court by the Defence Counsel at the court, Mr Mathias Emeribe (SAN), Akinrinbosun said he was offered N10m to claim that Saraki asked them to carry out the bloody robbery operation. According to him, he was told to admit and say Saraki was the one who asked them to carry out the ooeration. “I told him I won’t do that. That I will rather die for what I didn’t do than to lie against an innocent man. “He asked me to think over his offer very well. At this point he ordered officers Hassan and Mashood to return me to the cell. A separate one different from where others are and they should stop torturing me,” he said. Akinrinbosun said he was not allowed to write any statement in Ilorin except his bio data, until they were conveyed to Abuja in a tinted bus, where he was later kept in a place called Abattoir. There, the suspect said some herdsmen were killed in his presence, adding that he was mercilessly tortured and shot in the leg in order to implicate Saraki. Akinrinbosun maintained that Saraki has nothing to do with the robbery case. “We were like 15 to 20 taken to Abuja, I only know few of them. We were put outside and served meal, but I couldn’t eat because my hands were paralyzed due to the touture I went through in their hands in Ilorin. They asked Kunle Ogunleye to feed me. “They separated five of us, put us in the generator house and Officer Hassan Attila ordered they brought some men. They went to bring five Fulani men. They brought them and killed them all in my presence. “I was told, that was not a film. He asked me to stretch my legs and shot my right leg.” he said. The defendant then went ahead to show the gunshot wound on his legs to the Court. Akinrinbosun added that one of the robbery suspects, Micheal Adikwu, was shot dead in his presence, a situation that got him terrified, and made him agree to implicate Saraki in a prepared statement before the press. However, the presiding judge, Justice Alimat Salman adjourned the case till 13th of February, 2023.

MANCHESTER CITY will earn the most of any Premier League club from their players' World Cup performances. Fifa have a payment scheme called the Club Benefits Programme that means clubs earn £8,100 for each day one of their players has been in the tournament. It also accounts for the week-long preparation period before the games got underway in Qatar. Man City had 17 players that went to the World Cup and are set to be rewarded with £4.5million. Argentine forward Julian Alvarez is responsible for the largest percentage of that as he has reached the final - where each club receive around £297,000 for every player involved. The sums of money gradually decrease the earlier a player exits the competition - roughly working out to £257,000 for the semis, £225,000 for the quarters, £177,000 for the last-16 and £144,000 for the group stage. The payments are made regardless of whether the players actually made appearances for their country in the tournament. So the £297,000 Alvarez is set to earn City would still have been there had Argentina reached the final without him playing a single minute. As it's turned out, he has scored four goals and remains in contention for the Golden Boot - heading into the France clash one behind Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe. Other City players at the tournament include Kyle Walker, John Stones, Ederson, Phil Foden, Kevin de Bruyne, Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva. Rival Premier League clubs will also earn big amounts from their players at the World Cup. Prior to France's win over Morocco, The Times' figures showed that Man Utd will make £2.92m from the 13 players they had at the tournament. Meanwhile, Chelsea are set to earn £2.47m from their 12 participants. France captain Hugo Lloris is one of 11 Tottenham players that have been out in Qatar, with Spurs standing to rake in £2.33m. Next comes their North London rivals Arsenal who will reconvene their title push with a £2.11m reward for the 10 of their players that went to the World Cup. And the final club from the recognised "top six" is Liverpool who will earn £1.55m from their seven players that went to the Middle East. The lowest-earning Premier League clubs from this benefits programme will be Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Southampton. Those three teams will make just £291,000 having had just two players each involved in the World Cup - with none of them making it past the group stage.

A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has nullified the Primaries of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Rivers State. The court gave the decision yesterday in a suit brought before it by some aggrieved members of the party who had during the primaries of the party lamented exclusion. It would recall that during the APC primaries that some members of the party had alleged exclusion and took protests to the state Secretariat of the party in Port Harcourt. However, One George Orlu and four others who claimed to have purchased nomination forms had approached the court requesting that the primaries of APC in the state be nullified following their alleged exclusion in the process. The court in its decision yesterday ruled that the persons were unlawfully excluded from the primaries. Justice E.A. Obile, in his ruling yesterday, held that the aggrieved persons were shut out of the primaries unlawfully, adding that the process amounted to nullity. Obile in the judgment agreed with the plaintiffs that they were wrongly excluded in the process to participate in the party primaries. He, therefore, ruled that all those elected from the primary stand nullified and should not be recognized as candidates.

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has faulted the employment list released by the management of the Rivers State University, claiming that the list contains mostly names from a particular section of the state. Spokesperson of APC in Rivers, Darlington Nwauju, who made the observation in a statement, called on the visitor to the University, Governor Nyesom Wike, to direct that the employment list be immediately withdrawn in the overall interest of the state. Nwauju argued that the employment list did not capture diversities of people in the state including the non-indigenes, noting that the administration of Governor Chi- buike Rotimi Amaechi employed 12,250 teachers across the state, including non-indigenes residing in the state. Nwauju demanded that the entire process be completely reviewed and all those behind such ethnically-biased exercise be relieved of their duties. He said: “As a party we condemn this brazen show of malice towards other parts of Rivers State in the employment process of a supposed state university. “We call on the Governor of Rivers State, who is the visitor to the Rivers State University, to direct that the current employment list published by that institution be immediately withdrawn in the overall best interest of our state.” |
