Arsenal have agreed terms in principle with Antonio Conte, as Mikel Arteta continues to struggle this season, according to Todo Fichajes. The Gunners are bottom of the Premier League after three fixtures, having not won a game or scored a single goal. While sporting director Edu and the rest of the Arsenal hierarchy have showed faith in Arteta, it is believed he is walking a tightrope. And Arsenal are already putting together plans to replace Arteta, should they decide to terminate his contract in the coming weeks. The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has boasted that each arm of the government is independent as prescribed by the Constitution. But the governor said though autonomous, the three arms maintained a robust relationship to create the existing good environment for Rivers people to enjoy democratic dividends. The governor spoke shortly after inspecting the progress of the ongoing civil construction work at the official residential quarters of the members of the Rivers State House of Assembly in Port Harcourt on Friday. He said: “So, for us in the state, we believe in the autonomy of each of the arm of government. At the same time, we believe that working together for the interest of the state is better. Autonomy does not mean that each of government will begin to antagonise themselves. “If they do that, then at the end of the day, it is the state that will lose. Working in harmony, independently and cooperatively, will bring a lot of benefits to the people.” Wike said such posture that had helped his administration to deliver on its mandate, in terms of project delivery and provision of services, to Rivers’ people. He said: “Frankly speaking, it would have been difficult if we do not have a good, robust relationship between the three arms of government. Yes, we are independent but we work cooperatively to see that the state moves forward. “If we have the relationship that is not good with the legislature, then how would they have passed the budget for the executive to implement?” Speaking about the legislators’ quarters, Wike stressed that the project was executed deliberately in to provide the lawmakers and their families a befitting residence. He said: “Having done that, we also felt, the second arm of government, which is the legislature should also have their own residence. It will be where they can put their heads together, their families can stay and have a good environment where they can work.

Yoruba Nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho, is demanding N5bn in damages from the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the Department of State Services (DSS), over the invasion of his house in the early hours of July 1 by DSS operatives. Igboho, who is currently in detention in Benin Republic, filed the suit at the Federal High Court in Ibadan on Friday through his counsel, Chief Yomi Alliyu (SAN). During the raid, two of his associates were killed, while 12 others were arrested. Igboho is contending that the invasion of his house in the Soka area of Ibadan, was malicious and also amounted to a violation of his fundamental human rights. The agitator told the court that the DSS operatives stormed his residence at about 1 am on July 1 and “without announcing who they were or asking the applicant (Igboho) to open his gate, shot their way through, killing two people, including an elderly Imam doing Tahjud (vigil), shooting at cars, thereby destroying them and not sparing animals, like cats and dogs in total violation of the intendments of the fundamental human rights provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 and the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights Act.” He said for two hours, they shot through the ceiling and roof of his house, depriving him of “the quiet enjoyment of his house for the period of the armed invasion of the said property.” Igboho wants the court to order the defendants to return his personal belongings, which they allegedly carted away during the operations. He listed the items as N2m cash, €1,000, travel documents, gold jewelry and wristwatches, an iPhone 12 mobile phone, Samsung mobile phone, and other items yet to be ascertained. Igboho is also demanding that the AGF, the DSS and the DSS DG pay him N500m as cover for the damage done to his cars and house and another N5bn as “exemplary and/or aggravated damages for breaching the applicant’s fundamental rights in the course of the illegal and malicious invasion of his residence.” In addition, the embattled Yoruba Nation agitator wants the court to declare that he has “unquestionable and inalienable fundamental right to peacefully campaign and seek for self-determination of Yoruba tribe in Nigeria and lobby the legislature to amend the 1999 Constitution.” The court is yet to fix a date for the hearing of the suit.

The Japanese research institute noted that the result from the latest internet speed test will help the realisation of new communication systems that can support the new “bandwidth hungry services.” The researchers broke the previous record of 178 Tb/s set by engineers in Japan and Britain a year ago.(Reuters / Representational image) WORLD NEWS Japan sets internet speed record by transferring 319 Tb/s over 3,001 km The Japanese research institute noted that the result from the latest internet speed test will help the realisation of new communication systems that can support the new “bandwidth hungry services.” By hindustantimes.com, Hindustan Times, New Delhi UPDATED ON JUL 18, 2021 09:57 PM IST Researchers in Japan have demonstrated an internet speed of 319 terabits per second, setting a world record. A team of researchers at Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) used advanced fiber optic technology with a 4-core optical fibre of standard outer diameter of 0.125 mm to perform the speed test, breaking the previous record of 178 Tb/s set by engineers in Japan and Britain a year ago. To achieve the record speed, the researchers constructed a recirculating transmission loop experimental set-up by combining two kinds of rare-earth-doped fiber amplifiers. The combination of erbium and thulium doped-fiber amplifiers and distributed Raman amplification enabled a long-distance transmission over 3,001 km. “The 4-core MCF with standard cladding diameter is attractive for early adoption of SDM fibers in high-throughput, long-distance links, since it is compatible with conventional cable infrastructure and expected to have mechanical reliability comparable to single-mode fibers,” the Japanese research institute said in a paper published earlier this month. NICT stressed that it was crucial to demonstrate how new fibers can meet the demand of apparent “explosive increase” from new data services. The research institute further noted that the result from the latest internet speed test will help the realisation of new communication systems that can support the new “bandwidth hungry services,” adding that they will continue to explore ways to further increase the transmission capacity of “low-core-count multi-core fibers and other novel SDM fibers.” “Further, we will work to extend the transmission range to trans-oceanic distances,” NICT said. The research paper was published at the International Conference on Optical Fiber Communication which was held virtually from June 6-11 cc:Lalasticlal Mynd44 and Seun |

Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike says his administration is poised to build, furnish and deliver the best campus of the Nigerian Law School in Port Harcourt. The governor gave the assurance at the ceremony marking the official flag-off of civil engineering works for the establishment of the law campus at Rumueme Town of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, on Saturday. Governor Wike noted how Rivers people have hailed his idea and eventful decision to request for a campus of the Nigerian Law School to be located in Port Harcourt. According to Governor Wike, if the Rivers Government had not initiated to flag-off and construction two hostels and an auditorium at the Yenagoa Campus of the Nigerian Law School in Bayelsa State, it would have missed the opportunity to request for a Port Harcourt Campus. With the request granted and commencement of construction work at the new Law School site, Governor Wike said Rivers people will be the greatest beneficiaries in terms of employment opportunities the campus will offer and the attendant economic activities within the precinct of the institution. "People are saying what a wonderful project; what a wonderful decision that we took. I'm sure every Rivers man and women, even persons who have clear heart who is not going to play politics will know that decision of siting Law School campus in Port Harcourt is very key. "Not only will it help to reduce the number of those who ordinarily will not have the opportunity of going to law school at the time they finish their law programme at the university, it will improve the economy of the State. It will also create employment for our people." Governor Wike noted the importance of the Yenagoa Campus of the Nigerian Law School to the South-South region, but observed that even together with the other existing five campuses, there is still the lack of carrying capacity for law students due such training. The governor said the Port Harcourt campus will be part of the contribution of the State government to legal education in the country. He particularly acknowledged the apolitical consideration given to his request by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami SAN, despite his being a major critic of the APC led Federal Government. The governor also handed over the certificate of occupancy of the land on which the campus is being built and the land where the staff quarters will be built opposite the Hotel Presidential to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice. Governor Wike also announced that the Rivers State government has approved subvention for the running of the Law School for the next four years. The Rivers state governor further declared that he has the capacity and political will to complete the construction of the Law School on schedule. Performing the flag-off, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), who was represented by the Chairman, Council of Legal Education, Chief Nnaemeka Ngige, SAN, recounted how the journey leading to the foundation laying ceremony started with the request made by Governor Wike for a Law School in Port Harcourt. He asserted that the Council of Legal Education has resolved that henceforth, any State Government or group of persons wishing or offering to build a campus of Nigerian Law School in any other part of the country must comply with what is now called the Rivers’ Model. "I therefore use this medium to congratulate Governor Wike, the government and the good people of Rivers State for the vision and proactive stance in attracting monumental project to Port Harcourt, Rivers State. It is epoch making and a landmark achievement, which posterity will rate very highly in the history of Rivers State." He explained that following Governor Wike’s request, the Council of Legal Education has accepted to name the Port Harcourt Law School campus after legal luminary and former Attorney General of the Federation and Commissioner for Justice, Justice Nabo Bekinbo Graham-Douglas, SAN. The Director General of the Nigerian Law School, Professor Isa Huyatu Chiroma, who commended Governor Wike for his zeal to advance legal education, said academic activities is expected to start at the Port Harcourt campus in the next six to eight months. The Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon C. Amadi, commended Governor Wike for conceiving the idea of a Law School in Port Harcourt. He further thanked the Attorney General of the Federation and the Council of Legal Education for the approval to site the campus in Rivers State. Rivers State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Professor Zacchaeus Adangor, said the Law School campus in Port Harcourt will stand out as one of the most iconic achievement of the Governor Wike’s administration. The President, Nigerian Bar Association, Olumide Akpata, noted that Governor Wike has made history as Rivers State is the first to officially build a campus of the Law School for the Council of Legal of Education. Former president, Nigerian Bar Association, Onueze O.J. Okocha, SAN said it was gratifying to have a Law School campus in Port Harcourt which has over the years remained a centre of excellence in legal practise. Special Adviser on Special Project to the Governor, George-Kelly D. Alabo, while giving the project description, said facilities in the Campus will comprise 14 structures including 1500 capacity classroom blocks, hostel blocks for 1,638 students, multipurpose hall, 16 units 3-bedroom flat staff quarters with swimming pool, gymnasium and lawn tennis court. Superstar Lionel Messi won his first trophy with his national team as Angel Di Maria’s goal gave Argentina a 1-0 win over hosts Brazil in the Copa America final on Saturday. The victory at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium ended Argentina’s 28-year wait for a major trophy, and also ended Brazil’s unbeaten home record that stretched back more than 2,500 days. Argentina had last tasted success at a major tournament in 1993 when the great Gabriel Batistuta’s brace gave them a 2-1 win over Mexico in the Copa final in Ecuador. It was the first time in six editions playing at home that Brazil had failed to lift the trophy. And while 34-year-old Messi’s odyssey has come to an end, Brazil’s Neymar, five years his junior, is still without a major title at international level having missed the Selecao’s win on home soil two years ago through injury. Argentina edged a brutal and fractious affair thanks to Di Maria’s goal on 22 minutes. The 33-year-old winger ran onto Rodrigo De Paul’s sumptuous through ball to lob Brazil goalkeeper Ederson with a first time finish. In a frantic start, Argentina’s burly enforcer Nicolas Otamendi was quickly in with his first foul while Brazilian midfielder Fred picked up the first booking after just three minutes for a studs up lunge at Gonzalo Montiel. Brazil were unchanged from their semi-final win over Peru while Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni made five alterations, notably bringing in Di Maria — who made an energetic and decisive entry off the bench against Colombia last time out. The final was the first match of the tournament, which was originally due to take place last year, to allow in fans as 7,800 — a tenth of the Maracana capacity — took their seats after authorities partially lifted pandemic restrictions. The first clear chance came on 13 minutes as Richarlison headed down Marquinhos’s long ball into the path of Neymar but the Brazilian star was crowded out by a pair of defenders. The brutal nature of the early challenges could be seen on the players’ kits, with Neymar sporting ripped shorts and Lucas Paqueta being left with a hole in his sock following an intervention by Otamendi.

JUST IN Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has granted tax relief and incentives to taxpayers in the state, to cushion the effects of hardship occasioned by COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Governor Wike has also announced the suspension of all informal sector tax drive for the year 2020, noting that the informal sector was the worst hit in terms of the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. He further suspended all local government taxes and levies for the 2020 tax year, except tenement rate and granted a waiver of 50 per cent on all assessed Capital Gains Tax (CGT) until December 2020. Executive Director, Rivers State Internal Revenue Service (RIRS), Adoage Norteh, disclosed this in a document given to Daily Sun in Port Harcourt. The Governor announced the extension of the deadline of self-assessment and annual returns by individuals and companies operating in Rivers to December 31, this year, due to COVID-19 restriction of movements which affected businesses. He noted: ‘The COVID-19 pandemic and the related lockdowns have resulted in major disruption in economic activities, resulting in negative economic impact, particularly on micro, small medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). ‘Most of these MSMEs operate in the rural areas, with many having limited online connectivity to be able to file and pay their taxes electronically. ‘It has, therefore, become expedient and equitable for the Rivers State Government to ease the compliance requirements for taxpayers, giving them waivers on penalties and interest for late filing and payment of taxes to the extent that they are related to the COVID-19 pandemic,’ the Governor stated. He also granted a 20 per cent discount on all Personal Income Tax (PIT) assessment issued to owners of schools, hotels, pharmacies and hospitals, as well as other allied businesses in the year to December 31, 2020.
