PoliticsRe: Why Is ONNE, Calabar & Delta Sea Port Under Utilized. by kayfra: 4:59pm On Feb 18, 2016
PaulJohn1:
Good question @ op.

Also been wondering how a nation with potentials and population as huge as Nigeria have only one functional port for import and export (except crude oil)
Very unreasonable. Imagine if Lagos port is attacked or something goes wrong, then the whole country that is not self sufficient in almost all sectors get static.

If the government (states & Fed) is serious, piracy and other factors raised by earlier posters are things that can be well handled. The FG feel relaxed about piracy in other ports because one is functional (lagos). A progressive government won't think this way. But will stive to make all ports functional at whatever cost. The benefits are just unlimited: Employment, Development, De-congestion.
In a functional Nigeria, minimum of 4 of the nation's 8 coastal states should have a port and at least an inland port.
Lagos, Ogun/Ondo, Delta/Bayelsa, Rivers, AI/CR should have a port.
Wrong assumption.

Onne and the other ports in that area are responsible for most of our crude oil exports. The price for insecurity is just added to the cost of producing and distributing crude. It's the main reason why our crude has an artificial $10 a barrel in cost or so for insecurity and instability.

Buhari's response is deploying the navy and army to that area to secure it but a lot of people will call it militarization etc etc. Just a bunch of ignorant people.

Crude swaps was meant to give its stakeholders private jets. That's the most corrupt sector of the oil and gas industry.

Carefully reading most comments I see that the state govt and the ppl of the region are to blame but I must ask the port is controlled by the federal government rite? So it shld be in there jurisdiction to make other ports function except there is a hidden agenda with lagos we don't know about.
When you've participated in international trade, you will understand the concept of insurance. For any shipper to agree to ship goods out to those ports, they have to pass the cost of increased insurance premiums to the people that want to ship goods to that region. Increased insurance means increased shipping fees and also the dangers in the water means more chances of a force majeure.

Nobody wants to play emotional politics with their containers, not my igbo business oriented friends. They'll rather use Lagos for obvious reasons coz it's a lot more cheaper landing cost. If you and I both sell product X, I ship to Lagos and you ship to Onne and we both sell in the SE markets. I'll out compete you every damned day, 365 days of the year.

For crude shipments, the cost of high insurance is already factored in and we also don't have any other feasible port to ship oil other than those ones. This increases our cost of crude and it's one of the reasons we can't sell crude as competitive as Angola. Those sea pirates and miscreants have jacked up our costs!

GEJ would have done better! Better. Better!
The major problem of this country is the parasitic North!
If the North is equally productive and not parasitic on the resources of the south since 1912 and it's romance with militant Islam since danfodiyo era till date, Naija would have been better than England by now.

Nobody want to know how many trillions of oil money is going down the drain everyday since 1954 just to procure PEACE in the North...till date!

What are we even gaining from the Northern part to our overall GDP? Zero!! Big Zero!!!
The North over supplied crude oil to the global market which made prices fall?
The North decided that other regions or states shouldn't diversify their economies and hence, rely on handouts?
The North were solely responsible for looting the country dry?
The North forced our consumption habit of imported everything?
The North told you not to make hay while the sun shone? No savings.
The North told you to import what you can produce locally?
The North killed your puss cat?
The North made you fart?

Another Civil War is very close to Nigeria.

Buhari will set Nigeria on fire very soon.

Buhari’s brothers who stole 80% of Nigeria money are moving freely in the north but he is after south south and south east.

Buhari be warned.

Face your brothers that destroyed the country with their unbridled embezzlement
What's with the nonsense obsession with civil wars. Any small thing, civil war. War this, war that.

May your generation not know war. Like its some form of WWE. You think war is all a joke?

Yup. You don't utilize 100% of the heat in the first cycle and can process the residual in another cycle. More power from your fuel.

First, he banned 41 products from getting forex from the CBN. This forced the importers to turn to the black market causing the naira to depreciate heavily there

Then he refused to depreciate the naira despite strong evidence to do so. This is why the naira keeps losing value at the black market.

JP Morgan delisting was a vote of no confidence on Buharinomics

He is a genuinely honest guy but his economics sucks
I don't understand you.

If the CBN governor under GEJ's post 2015 government did not put restrictions on forex, the fate of naira would have gone potentially worse.

There is nothing GEJ or any human being would have done to fix the fundamental problem which is how to replace the forex we earn from high crude prices.

G1gbolahan:
Opon Imo is now being adopted in Unilorin now, if you think it adds no value, it is your opinion. How is truancy and indiscipline down to school uniform?? Lol... And then teachers not regularly paid is down to financial issue which I repeat is not Aregbesola's doing. But have a good day
However noble the intention of Opan Imo is the basic facts that will continue to drive terrible results remain

1. The free everything including free food. When parents basically outsource all their responsibilities to the states then nothing is valued. People don't value anything free. A fact! Even in the US people pay for meals and school supplies in public schools.
2. As long as the parents are not paying then the kids take everything for granted
3. There are no dedicated government teachers. All they do is mark time like any lazy government worker
4. Missions are driven by a higher calling to God and will do their jobs with that level of dedication. This will create an enabling environment for learning where pupil and teacher are in perfect partnership. We don't have that in government schools
5. Bigger schools, bigger problems. Too many heterogeneous mixes and that is bad for learning. In the SE, for example, they all have similar value system etc. Religion was used as a wedge issue in the past couple of elections so the Muslims in Yoruba land are now more radicalized. This means they will not cede an inch to allow western standards to proliferate.
