Poverty in Nigeria by region according to World Bank SW = 16% SE = 28.8% NW = 45.9% NE = 50.2% "While the South of Nigeria has relatively low poverty rates, ranging from 16% in the South West to 28.8% in the South East, poverty rates in the North West and North East are 45.9% and 50.2%, respectively. While the South of Nigeria (especially the South West) has experienced a strong positive dynamic in poverty reduction in recent years, the poverty rate in the North West has remained stagnant, while poverty has actually increased in the North East. Thus, disparities between the North (North West, North East) and South of Nigeria in poverty and living standards have increased. This is no doubt related to the recent security challenges in the Northern part of Nigeria. Explanatory factors for the high differences in living standards by geographical region are likely related to differences in the provision of public services and the degree of connectedness to larger markets. Olabestonic001: On behalf of the Yoruba's (both supportive and non-supportive of my statement here), I apologize for the cruelty of the Civil War. To all my Igbo friends, I'm very sorry for the Red War that turned the beauty of humanity to savagery, the brilliancy of our hearts to criminality and the piety of the human race to villainity. Please, every Igbo reading this, pardon the Yoruba's; I personally ask present an unreserved apology. I know some will not like my apology and others still have the rights to be hateful. For such people, pls, pardon the Yoruba's. May we all find the heart to say sorry to the recipients of the brunts of the Civil War.
Nijabazaar, find a place in your heart to forgive the Yoruba's. GOD bless the Igbo's and GOD bless Nigeria. There were casualties on both sides and either side could have won. I was not involved in the civil war nor any war and I bear no hatred in my heart towards any tribe. I don't interact or conduct business carrying a burden that is not my own. I speak for myself and my family. Kapish. |

I don't think Achebe was bitter he was just telling history without wearing a tinted spectacle. I won't waste too much time on Achebe's book. Professional and non-Nigerian critics with no vested interests on the issue have already done enough justice on the book with the inherent bias. No fault of Achebe's, since he lived through the bitter times. He only knows his pains so I won't dwell on it any longer. You on the other hand have been opportuned to chart your own course based on daily interactions with Nigerians. It's time we demonstrate that, us Nigerians, have a responsibility to elevate the black race. Of what use is our intellect when all we do can't be differentiated from what the folks in Rwanda did. |

Agric is not seen as a game changer in his eco outlook Roads, which fall under infrastructure is still considered development projects. Workers will be hired and economy will improve due to a better transportation network. We can ship goods cheaply and more efficiently, thus, reducing waste and cost. US interstate highways is one of the catalyst for their supergrowth. To be honest I have not paid attention to what was budgeted for agriculture. I believe we'll get better execution for such in the state level. States understand their terrain and people more than the federal government. In theory, states should also be more efficient with funds than federal government. I would be shocked if they do not continue with Adesina's policies. |

For example, what are the present challenges a,dollar income b,petroleum products needs c,power needs d,rice wage import bill e,road infrastructure f,employment g,GDP economic growth!
Even with this small highlight,it is rather uncalled for that PMB administration is giving excuses They are in place but what is the track record of its execution? All our infrastructural deficits will not dissappear overnight so no need to formulate stuff when there are plans to fix them. Main issue now is execution and for that we need a serious and commited government. The interim solution before everything falls in place is going back to reliable Keynesian economics. Government spending on development projects and the reason I support borrowing as long as it's not for recurrent expenditure. |

Of course everyone knows that Igbo ladies are by far, more appealing than Yoruba ladies. We must not forget that it is God that gave the Yoruba their physical features.
I suppose my disappointment comes from the fact that I am not impressed by the Yoruba inward content of character. Remember these people starved millions of our people to death without showing remorse for it. Look at what is currently going on in a Lagos market where a whole state government demolished billions of naira worth of goods without blinking. Now I find their attitude deplorable.

They will turn it to another bureaucracy and it will get ran down. Let government give incentives to business men interested in farming so they can run it profitably. Areas where government can help: 1. Low interest loans for farmers 2. Access to cheap forex for any farmer willing to import processing machines and equipment for mechanized farming 3. Creation of trading boards so the farmers can have easy Avenue to export and earn forex 4. Training farmers on latest farming practices and trends 5. Banning imports of any agricultural products we can grow here. Total ban. 6. Give easy access to fertilizers 7. Creating standards boards to make sure our produce meets export standard Etc etc |

Government can own 80% but allow the company that owns 20% to run it and government supervise Nigerian government need cash .... and I see quick cash in the agricultural industry That's the bane of our problem. The role of the government is not to setup and run farms. It's to create an enabling environment for entrepreneurs to run farms. Government can subsidize farmers especially those interested in mechanized and large scale operation, but asking for government to setup and run anything is an invitation for continous failure and looting. Haven't you learnt anything from NNPC and different comatose parastatals? When will you people realize how difficult it is to act fast in a democracy with varying interests? Gbawe: Thank you very much. I wonder why some cannot deploy simple logic to see what is obvious before they bore us with the redundant dollar to naira rate argument they think indicts Buhari of poor performance. While at it, these folks should tell us what has happened to oil price in the past 1 year and the specific economic problem a mono economy like Nigeria, reliant on oil as it main earner and source of foreign currency, will face when its main export is becoming more worthless by the day. Honestly the naira to dollar argument is so incredibly stupid, given the issues Nigeria is facing, I personally feel anyone who cites it is a child not worth taking seriously. Is it Buhari's fault Nigeria is a mono economy, with a moribund SME sector, extremely vulnerable to drastically falling price of crude? The article below is from 2014 when oil was selling for $68.00 per barrel. What miracle will an adult of sound mind then expect today that oil price is around $27.00 per barrel?

since1914: This is a brilliant piece, and it is a debate that we would be having as a country, sooner or later considering the current state of the Naira.
Unfortunately, there is also another side to the writer's narrative. While, I do concede that some Nigerians are 'bandwagon consumers' who buy thing simply because of their neighbours are buying. We must also take a very critical look at Nigerian businesses and the quality of the products and services they churn out. Money is very difficult to come by these days, and people would always want to have full value for their money. Therefore Nigerians should not be blackmailed into patronising Nigerian businesses just to fulfill some nationalistic objective, rather should only do so if it gives them value for their money.
Most Nigerian businesses have not understood the importance of building solid brands, hence cannot yet compete with their foreign counterparts. They always aim to meet a supposed 'Nigerian standard', rather attain global best practices that will guarantee them a place on store shelves. If Globalcom for instance did not meet those standards, it would not have survived a single day in Ghana or any of the other countries where it operates. Every Nigerian company that wants to be taken seriously, must wake up and start acting like a global brand, because government cannot keep protecting them in perpetuity, there has to be a timeline after which the markets will be liberalised. Dangote has built a global brand from Nigeria, so what excuse do they have not to do same. When we heap invectives on Shoperite and Spar because they are foreign brands, we must also realise that there are several Nigerian companies and banks doing business abroad as well.
I recently met a foreigner in his mid thirties, whose family own chains of manufacturing businesses in Nigeria. He told me his father was born in Nigeria, and his grandparents moved here long before independence. Eventhough his father and grandfather have passed on, the family businesses kept expanding. That says a lot about Nigerian businesses. How many family businesses in Nigeria have survived the family 'war of inheritance'. If we were patriotic consumers, quality and standards will bow to the laws of demand and supply. People will naturally demand more for locally produced quality goods versus competition and others will be forced to step up standards. And if government agencies like SON weren't corrupt they'd also play a part in enforcing minimum standards of quality. |
