Politics / Breaking:pdp Shifts NWC Meeting Over Wike, Govs Tension by kcmichael: 11:42am On Sep 05
The acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Umar Damagum, has Postponed the party’s National Working Committee meeting until next week due to increasing tension between former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, and the PDP Governors Forum, regarding the status of Rivers State party congresses.

Amid the lingering political crisis between Wike and the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, the PDP governors had taken sides with Fubara, insisting that the governor should be recognised as the leader of the PDP in Rivers State.

The declaration by the governors had infuriated Wike, who warned them to stay out of Rivers matter or he would ‘put fire’ in their states.

But reacting on Tuesday, the PDP Governors’ Forum slammed Wike, describing his threat as irresponsible.

They insisted that their position remained, reminding Wike that while he was Rivers governor, he enjoyed the same privilege as the party’s leader.

The PDP governors are demanding that the ward and local government congresses conducted in Rivers State, which gave the party’s structure to Wike, should be annulled and fresh ones conducted.

The PDP NWC meeting, which was expected to hold on Wednesday and would have provided an opportunity to further address the disagreements between Wike and the governors, did not, however, hold.

The PUNCH reported that despite a court injunction halting the PDP’s congresses in Rivers State, the Damagum-led NWC proceeded with the congress, which handed control of the party structure in Rivers State to Wike.

On August 24, the PDP Governors’ Forum voiced support for Fubara, urging the NWC to recognise him as the party leader in the state and transfer control of the party structure to him.

In response, Wike threatened to incite chaos in PDP state chapters if they backed Fubara.

The Governors’ Forum condemned Wike’s threats as irresponsible and reaffirmed its support for Fubara.

The PUNCH exclusively gathered that due to increasing tensions and to prevent confrontation at the NWC meeting scheduled for Wednesday, Damagum postponed the meeting until next week.

Our reporter, who was at the party’s national headquarters, Wadata Plaza in Abuja on Wednesday, observed that the Damagum, the National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature, the Deputy National Chairman South, Taofeek Arapaja, Deputy National Secretary, Setoji Kosheodo, were in the office between 1:05 pm and 3:10 pm.

A senior NWC member, who was present with them, stated that they gathered at the party headquarters to discuss the Kaduna chapter matter.

The source, who did not want his name mentioned because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, said, “There is no need for an NWC meeting at this time. The meeting will be held next week. We only convened to discuss the Kaduna State chapter (issues). There was an issue in Zango Kataf, but it has been resolved.”

Another senior PDP NWC member, who similarly requested anonymity, told The PUNCH that Damagum postponed the meeting out of concern it might lead to a confrontation.

The source added that other NWC members were unaware of any discussion regarding Kaduna; instead, Wike’s NWC loyalists met solely to finalise their plans.

He stated, “They are only playing games with the party members and its future. Those present at the secretariat today are part of their team.

“They postponed the meeting because they wee afraid of the potential outcomes. If we had met today (Wednesday), we would have discussed the Rivers and other states’ congresses. The NWC needs to approve everything. Pressure from Wike and from governors to the entire NWC led them to delay the meeting to buy time.

“They were at the Secretariat to plan their next move. That is why some of us are not aware. With the governors having taken an open stance, they are trying to delay things to achieve their objectives. Thus, they deliberately postponed the meeting.

“On our side, we can’t call for an NWC meeting because Wike’s faction is in the majority. But, let’s see what they will do next.”

When reached for comment, the PDP acting National Chairman clarified that no meeting was planned for Wednesday.

Damagum, in response to The PUNCH’s inquiry, said, “Ask the secretary if he has scheduled any NWC meeting for this week; it seems like you are the one suggesting the meeting.”

The PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, also denied that the NWC meeting was postponed solely because of the Wike-governors conflict.

In response to the claim that the meeting was postponed out of fear of confrontation over Wike and the PDP governors, Abdullahi stated: “Not exactly. We simply decided to address the items for the meeting differently.

“The NWC couldn’t have been suspended owing to this singular Wike-governor’s imbroglio.”

PDP blames APC

Meanwhile, the PDP has alleged that the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government is behind its internal conflicts and the turmoil within other opposition parties.

PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary Ibrahim Abdullahi, who stated this in an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, urged President Bola Tinubu’s APC administration to refrain from interfering in their party.

Abdullahi stated, “They are our problem. It is better for President Bola Tinubu and his party, the All Progressives Congress, to focus on their own party and leave the PDP alone.

“All the efforts they are making to weaken the opposition, whether it is the PDP or other opposition parties, to ensure that in 2027 there are no presidential aspirants or candidates from other parties, will amount to nothing.

“We are wise enough to see beyond his immediate interests and can see through his intentions.”

In response, APC Publicity Director, Bala Ibrahim, criticised the PDP, stating that blaming others for their own problems was a sign of weakness.

Ibrahim, in an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, said the APC was prepared to offer guidance to the PDP leadership on managing party affairs.

He stated, “You see, if the PDP cannot manage its own affairs, it is disastrous for them to place the blame on others. If you cannot manage your own house, accusing others of inciting problems is a sign of weakness. It indicates that the PDP is incapable of handling its own issues and does not know how to proceed.

“If they are accusing the ruling APC of sponsoring people to cause problems within their party, why did they allow the cracks to appear? If they cannot do it and need the APC’s expertise, we can offer assistance, but it will come at a cost.

“The APC is focused on building the country and fulfilling its promises, not on the internal problems of a party that is struggling. We do not have time to engage with the issues of a party that is a sinking ship.”

Politics / PDP v PDP: Rivers EXCO disagrees with National leadership over appeal by kcmichael: 11:23am On Jul 16
The Rivers State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has disagreed with its national leadership for dissociating the Party from the appeal filed at the Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt Division against the ruling of the High Court of Rivers State in Suit No: PHC/2177/CS/2024.

The national headquarters of PDP had in a press statement issued by Hon. Debo Ologunagba – the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) dissociated the Party from the appeal filed at the Court of Appeal case.

However, in a swift reaction the Rivers State PDP Chapter, the legal Adviser, Kingsley Chuku, a press statement argued that the “Federal High Court, Abuja Division in the case of Ambassador Akawo Vs Peoples Democratic Party & 2 Others in- SUIT NO: FHC/AB-J/CS/112/2023 delivered on the 20th day of September, 2023 had interpreted Article 46(1) of the Constitution of the Peoples Democratic Party and declared that the State Legal Adviser of the party is vested with the requisite powers and authority to appoint legal representation for the party in relation to the activities of the party at the State level”.

Also, the State PDP Legal Adviser, Chuku pointed out that is that the Peoples Democratic Party did not appeal against the said judgment till date.

Chuku clarified that he issued the letter of instruction to the Counsel who filed processes in the case in question, i.e., Suit No: PHC/2177/CS/2024 and authorized him to file the Notice of Appeal, relying on the judgment of the Federal High Court in the case of Ambassador Desmond Akawo Vs Peoples Democratic Party & 2 ORS (SUPRA).

“I reiterate that the Rivers State Chapter of the party authorized the filing of the appeal.
Thank you”, Chuku said.

Recall that PDP, has distanced itself from an appeal filed at the Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt Division.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, made the clarification in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

Mr Ologunagba said that party’s attention was drawn to a SUIT No: PHC/2177/CS/2024 wherein the PDP was reportedly listed as appellant.

He said that the purported appeal was never authorised or instituted by the party.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the PDP National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, has ascertained that the party did not file the said appeal neither did it authorize any external solicitor to file same on its behalf.

“As such, the PDP cannot be listed as appellant in the appeal.

Politics / Explosion In Rivers State Meant To Harm Senators, Reps Lodged In Hotel President by kcmichael: 3:31pm On Jun 27
An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has claimed that the recent explosion in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, was targeted at the hotel, where Senate and Reps Committee members on Privatization were lodged at the time.
Recall that on June 25, 2024, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was detonated near Hotel Presidential in the heart of Port Harcourt, the state’s capital, during a protest allegedly led by political associates of the Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike.

At the time, lawmakers were in the state for an oversight function.

Reacting to the development, Eze condemned the schemes by Wike’s allies to turn the Rivers political playground into an unsavoury scene of carnage and bloodbath.

Speaking via a statement made available to the media, the APC chieftain asserted that the protest was a mere tactic contrived by those he described as ‘sore losers’ to unleash mayhem in strategic locations in the state, including Hotel Presidential.

Eze said the escapade was tantamount to waging war against the state for disgruntled politicians to freely resort to armed warfare in a bid to foist their inordinate desire on the state and her people.

He expressed worry that investigations into the incident may be marred by undue interference, as reports are ripe that the Force Headquarters is under pressure to transfer the prime suspect in the explosion to Abuja

Eze called on the Inspector General of Police to resist any pressure on him to sabotage the investigation.

Politics / Pro-Wike Vs Fubara Lawmakers: Appeal Court Orders Parties To Maintain Status Quo by kcmichael: 1:42pm On Jun 14
Rivers Crisis: Appeal Court Adjourns Hearing Of Pro-Wike Lawmakers’ Pleas To June 20, Orders Parties To Maintain Status Quo

An Appeal Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital has ordered the 27 Rivers State House of Assembly members loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to maintain status quo.

The appellate court gave the order at a virtual ruling held via Zoom on Friday on two Motions filed by Pro-Wike’s embattled Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule and 26 other lawmakers who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in December 2023.

The lawmakers had filed an appeal challenging the order of injunction granted by the Rivers State High Court, restraining them from parading themselves as lawmakers and that their acclaimed defection was invalid.

SaharaReporters had reported that Rivers State High Court Judge, Justice Okogbule Gbasam, ruled that Amaewhule and the other 26 lawmakers were still members of the PDP.

The judge ruled that the claimants failed to provide evidence of the defection, stating that party membership can only be proven through listing on the party's register or a membership card.

Justice Gbasam emphasized that mere TV ceremonies and verbal declarations are insufficient to establish defection.

Since the lawmakers' names remain on the PDP's membership register, they are still considered PDP members, the court ruled.

But the Rivers State Government denied reports that the 27 lawmakers led by Amaewhule were still members of the PDP as ordered by court, saying such an assertion was misleading and false.

The government’s position was stated by the Attorney-General of the state and Commissioner for Justice, Dagogo Israel Iboroma.

According to him, the suit before the court did not seek to declare the seats of Amaewhule and 26 others vacant.

On Friday, the appeal court in a ruling on the first motion, granted the Appellants’ prayers for leave to compile and transmit the Records of Appeal, deeming the Appellants’ Brief of Argument as filed, accelerated hearing and a stay of further proceedings at the High Court.

However, the Appellate Court refused to grant the Appellants’ prayer for stay of execution and the setting aside of the interim order of the State High Court.

The court held that granting the Appellants’ prayer for stay of execution of the lower court order would amount to determining the appeal at this stage.

The court therefore ordered that the Appellants must maintain the present status quo pending the hearing of the appeal.

The court ordered that the Respondents are to file their briefs within 72 hours of being served.

It thereafter adjourned the hearing of the appeal to June 20.

Politics / You Are A Small Man’ – Rivers Lawmaker Attacks Gov Fubara For Storming complex by kcmichael: 9:45pm On May 09
A member of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Enemi Alabo George, has berated Governor Siminalayi Fubara for storming the State House of Assembly with his security aides.
Naija News earlier reported that Fubara, accompanied by his security escorts and aides, stormed the assembly complex on Thursday amid the political crisis rocking the state.

The governor arrived the assembly complex where the Martin Amaewhule-led lawmakers meet, amid tight security.

Addressing journalists upon his arrival, Fubara stated that he was at the complex as the governor of the state.

Reacting to the Governor’s visit, George described Fubara as ‘such a small man.’

He accused the governor of breaking into the assembly complex, threatening and harassing people.

The lawmaker said, “Let me today dare Sim Fubara for the first time. You had the guts to break the gates of the Rivers State House of Assembly quarters and force yourself into the quarters, threatening and harassing people. Shooting and putting fear into people, into wives of Assembly members and their Children, just to assert yourself. You are such a small man.

“You burnt the hallowed chambers of the House of Assembly , we did not answer you, you attacked the residence of the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, where four people were killed, we did not answer you, you demolished the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex, we we did not answer you, we thought it the madness of a minute. You know where I live, you know my apartment, why didn’t you come?.

“I have respected our friendship for so long. I have refused to comment about you, I have respected your office as governor. I have always remembered that while I worked with Zenith Bank you were my friend, I have always remembered that you and me did a Masters Degree together, I have always remembered how much I worked for you to be Governor, how I mobilized professionals from all works and corners of life to support you. I remember that the only time you had the opportunity to present your blueprint to Rivers people, it was me!!! I orchestrated that, Yes!!! You have done enough.

“Now, let the heavens fall, I will never bow to baal. You are such a small man.”
