The board of the Nobel Peace Centre said on Monday it wished to end its formal cooperation with football’s scandal-plagued ruling body FIFA over the “Handshake for Peace” programme. The symbolic fair play gesture has been promoted by FIFA since 2014 at various levels of the game, and includes a handshake between the captains and referees before and after the final whistle. It was used by captains at the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil “in the spirit of Alfred Nobel and Nobel laureates.” Nobel, a Swedish industrialist and inventor of dynamite endowed the Nobel Peace Prize. “We still believe in the ‘Handshake for Peace’ initiative and wish for it to live on in the future,” said Bente Erichsen, executive director of the Nobel Peace Centre. The Nobel Peace Centre said it would begin discussions with the Norwegian Football Association on how to continue the programme. FIFA said that the handshakes would continue as planned at the ongoing Under-20 World Cup in New Zealand; the women’s World Cup in Canada and future events. It, however, expressed anger at how the matter was being handled. “We are disappointed to have learned from the media about the Nobel Peace Centre’s intent to terminate the cooperation with FIFA on the Handshake for Peace initiative. “FIFA is reluctant to accept this unilateral approach on what is a joint initiative between the football community and the Nobel Peace Centre. “This action does not embody the spirit of fair play, especially as it obstructs the promotion of the key values of peace-building and anti-discrimination,” FIFA said in a statement. http://www.punchng.com/news/corruption-nobel-peace-centre-to-end-partnership-with-fifa/ |
A OPEN LETTER OF COMMENDATION AND OBSERVATION TO THE VICE CHANCELLOR. Sir, I personally want to commend your office for the massive infrastructural development going on around FUTO. Taking an ariel view of the school, one can see the way befitting structures are popping out randomly and occupying space. It is something that is giving the school the desired shape that a university requires and it is worthy of commendation. Existing buildings are being renovated, bad roads are now motorable, serious landscaping project is on- going simultaneously. And Sir, I must say that this is really commendable. Sir, as a student coming from the Eziobodo axis of the institution, I saw a fence being built round the new student affairs building and I really would want to ask If the fence isn't going to restrict the access of students into the building? Still observing as a curious positive change-effecting Nigerian student I would want to ask how the staff and students of the department of Public Health would want to get documents signed by the Dean of the school of Health judging with the proximity of their new building to the Dean's office considering "time maximization". Sir, while on transit to the ONLY financial institution on campus where FUTO witnesses and records the highest traffic of students on a daily basis, I took a look at the flow of the beautiful and popular "Otamiri" and noticed that FUTO naturally deserves to have a spot called the "River side" where soft-things like picnics and other recreational activities would be carried out once a while; a complete university deserves one, don't you think Sir? Sir, personally acknowledging my limited knowledge in governance and administration, one needs not a sooth-sayer to tell how difficult it(governance) could be. Infrastructure is one of the indices to rating an institution and Sir, in the spirit of construction and innovation the Federal University of Technology, Owerri deserves a complete well-equipped sports "gymnasium". Sir, I MUST tell you that students would apprieciate you for a lifetime if it is granted. (FUTO deserves to host NUGA someday.) You are doing a very wonderful job Sir and We pray that the strength to leave legacies never depart from you. Judging by the fact that nothing in life is completely weightless. Please consider the(negligible) weight of the content of this letter as I believe one way or the other this letter gets to you. God bless the VICE CHANCELLOR! God bless FUTO!! Yours faithfully, 'Kelechi Iwuagwu(Pragmatic) |

This BokoHaram game plan is actually working. They don't want to immediately put an end to the killing, so it doesn't look like... you know na? |
