Super Eagles’ Technical Adviser, Lars Lagerback, has turned down a proposal to play an international friendly match with World Cup-bound Nigeria’s neighbour, Cameroun, in Abuja. Impeccable sources at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) said that Camroun was willing to play a friendly with the Super Eagles but the Nigeria’s coach said he prefers the match in London instead of Abuja as was being planned. The Camerounians felt going to London to play the Eagles will disrupt their training camp programme and told the NFF so but Lagerback remained adamant and the match was called off. Meanwhile, the friendly match with Colombia in London on May 30 remains the only scheduled match for the Super Eagles for the World Cup. The proposed friendly with Iceland on May 26 has yet to be sealed, while talk was on going with North Korea. Lagerback said playing Cameroun will not help the Eagles preparation since no African country is grouped with Nigeria, arguing that he needed teams that have similarity in style with Argentina, South Korea and Greece . NFF General Secretary, Bolaji Ojo- Oba, however, is not perturbed by the lack of matches for the Eagles as he insisted that they would get some friendly matches before the world cup begins. |
A 32-year-old man, Abraham Kalu, who allegedly sells vulture meat as chicken to unsuspecting members of the public has been arrested in Port Harcourt. Nemesis caught up with the suspect at the Mile 3 Slaughter in Diobu area of the Rivers State capital where he was seen catching vultures and consequently arrested following a tip-off by some traders. Checks by Daily Sun revealed that six vultures were found in his bag when he was arrested. The suspect, who told policemen that he started the filthy trade three months ago, moved into Port Harcourt from Ohafia in neighbouring Abia State on completion of his apprenticeship under one Maxwell, who runs a similar business near the Army Barracks in Ohafia and Obinze in Imo State. He said that he re-located to Port Harcourt because his former boss (Maxwell) had told him that there were more vultures there with the attendant potential of bigger catches and higher profit. Kalu, who said he was an indigene of Ndioji in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State, shocked policemen at the Mile-3 Police Station when he narrated how he catches the vultures by rubbing snuff on fresh meat to make the carcass- eating ugly birds dizzy and too weak to fly away after eating the meat. He said that thereafter, he would dress the slain vultures and inject a chemical into them to instantly clear their offensive peculiar odour. Although he initially told his interrogators that he sold the dressed vultures strictly to native doctors who use them for rituals, he could neither name such clients nor explain why he had to dress and inject the vultures with chemicals before selling them. On how he had been able to evade arrest before now, the suspect said people believed him each time he sold the dummy that the vultures were for native doctors. According to him, a dressed vulture goes for between N500 and N1,000 depending on size and location of the transaction. Police spokesperson in the State, Mrs. Rita Inoma-Abbey (SP), could not be reached for comments as at Press time. However, Police sources told Daily Sun that investigation was in progress. www.sunnewsonline.com |
South African Women's Football team manager Fran Hilton-Smith has warned the Nigerian authorities that if they bring the same squad that Banyana Banyana played against recently, they intend lodging a complaint with Fifa. Hilton-Smith claims the West African nation is breaking the fair play rules by fielding over- age players even though the continental authorities are trying to discourage age- cheating in the game. "We are waiting for them to arrive here and if they bring the same squad that played us in the first leg, we will make them aware that we intend lodging a complaint with the world controlling body Fifa." Hilton-Smith said that Nigerian journalists had also expressed their fears prior to the start of the first leg match that if they qualified for the World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago, they are likely to be disqualified because the girls clearly looked over-age. "I do not mind losing," said acting Under-17 SA National Women coach Solly Luvhengo after their 5-0 loss in the first leg match in Nigeria a fortnight ago. "But you should have seen, most of the girls that were fielded by Nigeria against us in the first leg match were over-age. The lame excuse that Nigerians were by nature physically bigger is rubbish because you didn't need to be a rocket scientist to see whether a girl is a teenager or well over her 20s, as was the case with those Nigerian girls during the first leg match. "One of the journalists quizzed the flustered coach and demanded to know the criteria used to select a girl whom he said represented Nigeria at the 2008 Fifa World Cup in New Zealand." Luvhengo said he hated to sound as if he was moaning, but the truth was that the Nigerians did not adhere to the spirit of fair play on that day and loaded their squad with much older girls than the required age of 16. He added however that he was very proud of his girls for the manner in which they fought against physically stronger and obviously older opponents. "We conceded a soft goal in the first minute of the match," recalls Luvhengo. "But the girls re-grouped very nicely and their courage under fire made me really proud. I can safely say that we will give them something they are not likely to forget in a hurry when we meet them in Klerksdorp on Saturday." Ghana, who enjoy a 7-0 lead against Tunisia from the first leg, travel to North Africa for a second leg encounter this weekend. The winners qualify for the World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago while the losers in this weekend's clashes meet in a two-legged play-off to determine the third African country that will qualify for the Mundial later this year. |
Loving brothers off the pitch, but more like Cain and Abel on it, Diego and Gabi Milito have been kicking lumps out of each other at every given opportunity since they began their professional careers for rival teams in Buenos Aires eight years ago. Tonight the family war continues with a place in the European Cup final at stake. Mrs Mirta Milito knows that one of her boys will be contesting the final on 22 May, she just does not know which one. She is also more than aware of the fierce rivalry that takes over when the two Argentines meet. She once had to leave the stadium as her sons were held apart by a referee while playing for local rivals Independiente and Racing in Argentina. The two brothers are separated by a year with the older Diego choosing centre- forward as his trade and sibling Gabi becoming a central defender. Diego joined Racing – the club his cousins played for and his family supported – but Gabi broke with that tradition and became captain of Independiente – Racing's sworn enemy. |

The European Union has launched a financial support, totalling N360 million, for various projects on democracy and human rights in Nigeria. In a statement signed by Kelechi Onyemaobi, the Press and Information Officer of the EU, on Wednesday, he said the money will cover projects for two years (2009 and 2010), and will be implemented by non- governmental organisations: “The European Union (EU) Delegation to Nigeria has launched a financial support for various new projects dealing with democracy and human rights. The total amount for the projects, covering 2009 and 2010, is €1.8 million (about N360 million). “The projects will be implemented by non- governmental organisations that will be selected on a competitive basis and awarded grants by the EU Delegation in Nigeria.” Projects to be funded The union also listed the priority areas that will receive funding under the scheme. They include - protection of the rights of children and young people (including actions aimed at addressing child trafficking); protection of women’s rights (including actions that support the implementation of the Convention Against All Forms of Discrimination against Women); actions that aim at the abolition of the death penalty; and actions that target the prevention of torture and ill-treatment by state agencies, including extra-judicial killings. Others are actions that contribute to the peace process in the Niger-Delta region of Nigeria; and actions that aim at conflict prevention and/or resolution, especially in Nigerian societies deeply divided by religious and ethnic issues, by means of civil society dialogues which seek to bridge societal divides and which bring together a wide range of stakeholders to share experience and analyse common problems. http://234next.com |
04.08.2010 At last, political associates of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar have endorsed his return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Atiku had after a recent meeting with Acting President Jonathan Goodluck given indication of his return to the PDP, a party in which he was a pioneer member. The decision for Atiku to rejoin the PDP fold was reached at a meeting of his associates on Tuesday. The associates at a meeting, which stretched into the early hours of yesterday, also resolved to set up a seven- man committee to ensure a smooth movement of the group into the ruling party both at the centre and the states. However, the eventual date of declaration for the PDP by the former vice-president would be determined by the Governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, meaning that the April 10 date is no longer feasible. A statement by the Media Adviser to Atiku, Mallam Garba Shehu Garba, said the group took the decision at a final round of consultations yesterday in Abuja after receiving reports by political leaders sent to the six geopolitical zones to interact with their supporters in the various political parties. It was gathered that this final meeting followed an earlier one held last week to consider the steps to take as a result of the failure of various political groups associated with the mega opposition party to come to common terms for its emergence. At the earlier meeting, the group reviewed the frustrations it encountered in the formation of an opposition political party. The various pillars of that movement were said to have gone their separate ways and the “political associates of Atiku” said they were left with no option than to take their destiny in their hands. According to Shehu, all the states that completed their consultations reported an overwhelming support for a return to the PDP. The meeting, however, resolved to continue its support for an associate of the former vice- president and the Action Congress (AC) candidate in the last Anambra State gubernatorial election, Dr. Chris Ngige, who has an impending matter at the election petitions tribunal. In his remarks after the resolution, Atiku was quoted to have admonished members of the group to carry themselves with modesty and humility and to desist from attacks on other groups involved in the failed mega party. He said the differences that led to the failure of the mega party initiative are a normal experience in democracy where individuals and groups are bound to occasionally have differences in their perspectives on issues. Among the prominent associates of the vice-president who attended the meeting were, Lawal Kaita, Senator Ben Obi, Chief Dapo Sarumi, Bashir Yusuf Ibrahim, Otunba Oyewole Fasawe, Hon. Dubem Onyia, Chief Titi Ajanaku, Princess Funke Adedoyin, Chief Ejiofor Onyia, Alhaji Umar Kareto, Boss Mustapha, Umar Shittien and Prince Tonye Princewill. Others were Alhaji Saleh Shehu, Alhaji Hassan Zurmi, Alhaji Adamu Madibbo, Prof. Musa Yakubu, Ahmed Yusuf, Wamban Yawuri, Bode Ojewole, Prof. Sayed Malik, Peter Okocha, James Iniame, Hon. Greg Egu, Senator Abba Ali, Dr. Abdul Mayassir Ladan, Ambassador Bayo Yusuf, Senator Jonathan Zwingina, Hon. Jimi K. Audu, Hon. Michael Zira, Hon. Sani Ango, Hon. Albert Atiwurcha, Kashim M. Njidda, Aliyu Yahaya Sa’ad, Hon. G.O. Aro-Lambo, Prince Kayode Olowu and Yaya Abubakar. Also in attendance at the meeting were Yakubu Tsala, Col. Musa Mohammed (rtd), Dr. Davis Ibiamu Ikanya, Hon. Martins Babale, Hon. Ndubuisi Nwobu, Mallam A. Gadzama, Dr. Adeolu Akande, Dr. Adinoyi Ojo-Onukaba, Ibrahim Sha’aban, Oghoore Collins, Mr. Tony Awana, Hon. Osima Gniah, Dr. (Mrs) Ego Ezumu, Chief Mathew Nwankwo, Prof. Maxwell Gidado, Senator Suleiman Nazif, Malam Garba Shehu and Hon. Fatai Buhari, representing Senator Rasheed Ladoja. |
Barcelona star Lionel Messi cannot completely rule out moving to Italy later in his career. The Argentine is football's man of the moment after his stunning four goals against Arsenal on Tuesday night. A long time target for Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti, Messi told Gazzetta Video: "In Italy one day? I do not know, I always said I'd stay here. "In football you can never say never, but my idea is not to move." |
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealed his anger after his side slipped out of the Champions League on away goals to Bayern Munich. Despite winning 3-2 in the second leg at Old Trafford, the tie finished 4-4 on aggregate with Arjen Robben ’s goal proving the decisive strike. The Red Devils were also forced to play the majority of the second half with 10 men after Rafael Da Silva was shown a second yellow card for a pull on Franck Ribery. Speaking to ITV Sport after the game, Sir Alex insisted the sending off changed the game but blamed the visitors for swaying the referee. “[With] Eleven men [we had] no problem, but the young boy [Rafael] showed a bit of inexperience, ” explained the Scot. “ But they [Bayern] got him sent off, everyone sprinting towards the referee, typical Germans. “ The key issue was the losing the goal just before half time and the young boy getting sent off.” Despite his disappointment Ferguson did pay tribute to Robben whose second half goal sealed the tie. “ I think the problem was without the extra man they made the ball work and I thought we defended very well,” he added. “ It’s still an exceptional goal to settle the tie, it’s a tremendous hit by [Arjen] Robben.” The Scot had earlier raised eyebrows by including Wayne Rooney in his starting XI. The striker was then substituted in the second half and Ferguson insisted his injury was not serious. “ We took the risk, we are just having a look at the situation again, ” he said. “I don’t think it’s serious, it’s just the tissue and the blood vessel that gets burst. I ’m sure he’ll be OK for the following week.” |
