New signing Florian Thauvin could be thrown straight into the Newcastle United squad for Saturday's trip to Manchester United. Thauvin, 22, agreed a five-year deal at St James' Park on Wednesday, becoming manager Steve McClaren's fifth signing after Georginio Wijnaldum, Ivan Toney, Aleksandar Mitrovic and Chancel Mbemba. And the French attacker, who has moved from Ligue 1 side Marseille, could hardly have wished for a tougher debut, with Newcastle having only picked up one victory at Old Trafford in the Barclays Premier League era. However, Newcastle’s assistant manager Paul Simpson has no qualms about utilising Thauvin as soon as possible. "He's a really talented footballer, somebody who we hope will add to the group and improve the group," Simpson told nufcTV. "If he's involved at Old Trafford on Saturday, we're not expecting him to go and set the world alight straight away but if we can get him involved it'll give the whole football club a boost, and the rest of the players because they want competition for places. "And I also hope it'll give the supporters a boost, because so far we've only got one point but the level of performance against Southampton [in a 2-2 draw] gave us all a little taster of where we can get to and what levels can be achieved. "Hopefully, with the new signings coming in, we'll go into the rest of this period before January with a good group of players, a group of players who all want to be part of this football club, who all want to give 100 per cent every day in training and in every game that we have. "If we've got that, we can't really ask any more of them." Louis van Gaal's side came from behind to register a 3-1 first-leg victory over Club Brugge in their UEFA Champions League play-off on Tuesday and are one of just four clubs to hold a 100 per cent record in the BPL after two matches. Defender Chris Smalling is determined to maintain that momentum and believes Saturday's early kick-off could prove beneficial for United. "We must continue our good start," Smalling told MUTV. "It is another home game and we have to assert ourselves early on. "It is good that we again get to be in the first game that plays and, hopefully, set the benchmark for the weekend." Marouane Fellaini serves the last of his three-match ban for United, while Phil Jones is set to remain sidelined due to mild thrombosis. Newcastle, meanwhile, have Daryl Janmaat suspended after the Dutchman was sent off for two bookable offences in last weekend's 2-0 defeat at Swansea City. Match Preview Aston Villa defender Ciaran Clark says Barclays Premier League matches "don't come any better" than their home match against Manchester United on Friday The centre-back played the entirety of their 2015/16 season opener, as they began the BPL campaign with a 1-0 victory at debutants AFC Bournemouth, courtesy of Rudy Gestede's 72nd minute header. And Clark is relishing the opportunity to face Louis van Gaal's side, who kicked off the Barclays Premier League season with a 1-0 triumph against Tottenham Hotspur, under the floodlights at Villa Park. Clark told avfc.co.uk : "It's Man Utd. It's the first home game of the season. We're back at Villa Park. It's a sell-out under the lights. I'm not sure it can get much better than that. "You've got all the makings of a great game and I'm sure the fans can't wait for it. "The lads are the same. We love playing at Villa Park. It's obviously an amazing stadium and there's something special about matches there in the evening. It's just got that something extra.” Villa will start a top-flight campaign with back-to-back wins for the first time since 1999/00 if they beat Man Utd, but Clark expects a tough test. "United are one of the favourites for the title but we're determined to go out there and show everyone that we're a good side that can do well this season. "It won't be easy but there's a real focus and drive in the squad, with some talented new faces, and we want to really go out and impress." Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood, who will be without attacking duo Carles Gil (hamstring) and Jack Grealish (ankle), was captain of defending champions Blackburn Rovers the last time Villa won a BPL home match against Man Utd. That victory came when a youthful United side, who put a host of academy graduates - including David Beckham, Gary and Phil Neville, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt - into the first team picture after being pipped to the title by Blackburn in 1994/95. They started the following campaign at Villa Park with a 3-1 loss, but have not tasted defeat in away matches against Villa since. While history is on Man Utd’s side, the fixture also brings the best out of captain Wayne Rooney, who has scored 13 goals in BPL matches with Aston Villa, his best return against any team. United manager Louis van Gaal will be without the suspended Marouane Fellaini and Phil Jones, out due to mild thrombosis. Sergio Romero is set to continue in goal after keeping a clean sheet on his United debut, while Bastian Schweinsteiger's declaration that he is returning to full fitness this week will give Van Gaal further cause for cheer. Aston Villa : Bunn, Guzan, Steer, Amavi, Bacuna, Baker, Bennett, Clark, Crespo, Hutton, Richards, Senderos, Cole, Gardner, Gueye, N'Zogbia, Richardson, Sanchez, Veretout, Westwood, Agbonlahor, Ayew, Gestede, Kozak, Sinclair. Man Utd : De Gea, Romero, Johnstone, Blackett, Darmian, Evans, McNair, Rojo, Shaw, Smalling, Blind, Carrick, Herrera, Januzaj, Lingard, Mata, Pereira, Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger, Valencia, Young, Depay, Hernandez, Rooney, Wilson.
