you had no clue of what happened to your system. Cmos battery only enables your system bios to store settings related to the bios which help your system boot up. it has nothing to do with his files going away. it may be a virus or system restore bug.

he may even have disk write issues which might make the files be stored on the memory.

You are not so smart as you think. I had same issue and an engineer told me to change the battery which I did and problem got solved.

If na desktop, open the CPU and change the small round battery (CMOS) . The battery be like watch battery but bigger in size.
U can locate it inside the motherboard.
