Amnesty International has released satellite images from the January 2nd and 7th Boko Haram attack in Baga Borno state. Early reports put the death toll from the attack at 2000 but that has been disputed by the Nigerian military who put the death toll at 150.

“The Satellite images released by Amnesty
International on Wednesday provides indisputable and shocking evidence of the scale of last week’s attack on the towns of Baga and Doron Baga by Boko Haram militants. Before and after images of two neighbouring towns, Baga (160 kilometres from Maiduguri) and Doron Baga (also known as Doro Gowon, 2.5 km from Baga), taken on 2 and 7 January show the devastating effect of the attacks which left over 3,700 structures damaged or completely destroyed. Other nearby towns and villages were also attacked over this period. These detailed images show devastation of catastrophic proportions in two towns, one of which was almost
wiped off the map in the space of four days. Of all Boko Haram assaults analyzed by Amnesty International, this is the largest and most destructive yet. It represents a deliberate attack on civilians whose homes, clinics and schools are now burnt out ruins.

The analysis shows just two of the many
towns and villages that fell victim to a series of Boko Haram attacks which began on 3 January 2015. In Baga, a densely populated town less than two square kilometres in size, approximately 620 structures were damaged or completely destroyed by fire. In Doron Baga over 3,100 structures were damaged or destroyed by fire affecting most of the four square kilometre town. Many of the wooden fishing boats along the shoreline, visible in the
images taken on the 2 January, are no longer present in the 7 January images tallying with eye witnesses’ testimony that desperate residents fled by boat across Lake Chad. Thousands of people have fled the violence across the border to Chad and to
other parts of Nigeria including Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. These people are adding to the hundreds of thousands of internally displaced people and refugees, who have already stretched the capacity of host communities and government authorities" the report said

The report included accounts of some villagers who gave accounts about the attack. One man who was interviewed said he saw a woman who was in labor attacked and killed with her unborn child ripped from her stomach

"Half of the baby boy is out and she died like this"the man said Another said “They killed so many people. I saw maybe around 100 killed at that time in Baga. I ran to the bush. As we were running, they were shooting and killing.”he said

Amnesty International called on the Nigerian
government to take all possible legal steps to restore security in the north-east and ensure protections of civilians.

“Up until now, the isolation of the Baga combined with the fact that Boko Haram remains in control of the area has meant that it has been very difficult to verify what happened there. Residents have not been able to return to bury the dead, let alone count their number. But through these satellite images combined with graphic testimonies a picture of what is likely to be Boko Haram’s deadliest attack ever is becoming clearer. This week, Nigeria’s Director of Defence Information stated that the number of people killed in Baga including Boko Haram fighters “has so far not exceeded about 150. These images, together with the stories of those who survived the attack, suggest that the final death toll could be much higher than this figure.” the report says

The Police in Lagos State have recovered the mutilated remains of a man, identified only as Christmas, which were dumped at two different areas of the state.

Punch Metro learnt that the victim’s head was found at Olokodana junction in the Ebute Meta area, while his body was recovered in Alaka, Surulere, on Wednesday.

It was gathered that the identities of Christmas’ killers were, however, yet to be unravelled by the police.

A lodger, who was passing by the junction around 7am, was said to have raised the alarm, having discovered the head in a pool of blood.

Our correspondent gathered that two factions of hoodlums in Ebute Meta – Oto and Olokodana gangs – had since 2010, engaged one another in supremacy battle, which had allegedly claimed no fewer than 20 lives.

Punch Metro had reported on Friday, January 9, the killing of one Waheed Yusuf (aka Skippo) said to be the leader of the Olokodana gang.

He was allegedly killed in his house on Fagbayimu Street, Olokodana, Old Apapa Road, by some unknown gunmen.

A resident in the area, Tunde Adeniyi, told our correspondent that Christmas, who used to belong to the Olokodana gang, had abandoned the gang and was planning to leave the neighbourhood on Wednesday before he was killed.

He said, “I saw him packing his luggage on Tuesday. He said he was no longer interested in the clashes, adding that most of the top men in his (Olokodana) group
were dead.

“He even said the motive of the rivalry was baseless, so he would rather quit and leave the community. I was surprised when I saw his head this morning. His body was later found in Surulere by the police.”

An eyewitness, who gave his name simply as Kola, said men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad stormed the community on Monday to avert an imminent clash.

“SARS came here late evening on Monday and raided everywhere. They recovered guns and arrested some hoodlums, including a lady,” he said.

The Lagos State Police spokesperson, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the recovery of the head in Ebute Meta.

He, however, said he had not been briefed on the recovery of the victim’s body.

He said, “A bodiless head belonging to a yet-to-be- identified male was recovered at Olokodana junction, Ebute Meta, by policemen from the Iponri Division acting on a tip-off.

“The head has been deposited at the Yaba General Hospital morgue, while investigations aimed at unravelling and apprehending the characters behind the act have been activated.

“Members of the public are enjoined to avail us information that will aid diligent. investigation. I have not got any information on the recovery of his body in Surulere.”

A suspected bomber reportedly blew himself up while riding on a motorcycle along Kasuwan Mata area of Gombe town, Gombe State.

According to Daily Trust, as a result of the incident which occurred today, January 13, about 6:30 pm, only the suspect was killed.

The Nation reports however that the blast
killed 2 people, while 21 were injured and rushed to the Specialist Hospital in the state capital.

Reports reaching us say that the attacker might have targeted the mosque.

The sources disclosed that after the explosion the outraged crowd gathered in the area to burn the remains of the alleged attacker’s body.

One of the witnesses said:

“The bomber was driving along the Kasuwan Mata road when suddenly the bomb he was carrying exploded killing him and damaging the motorcycle he was using. After the incidence a group of angry mob that were around when the incident happened gathered the scattered human parts and burned it to ashes.”

It would be recalled that 2 weeks ago another suicide bomber killed himself and injured 10 other people on at Mallam Inna as he tried to enter a church.
