For the 12th edition of its annual essay competition among secondary school students in Nigeria, the United Bank for Africa Foundation asked participants to write on the topic: “ASUU strike has often cost Nigerian students time. Advise governments on how they can reach an agreement with ASUU to improve tertiary education in the nation.”

But in its report presented on Monday during the grand finale of the competition at the headquarters of the financial institution in Lagos, the four-member panel of judges said a good number of scripts out of about 5,000 received, lamented the strike by the lecturers.

The report was read on behalf of the panel by a Professor of English Literature at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), Asabe Kabir. Other members include Emmanuel Omobowale, Ini Uko and Samuel Onuigbo, all professors from various universities.

According to Mrs Asabe, the judges were excited about the topic, saying they had thought its liberality ought to “have given the students independent reasoning to express new ideas broadmindedly with unadulterated points, devoid of much plagiarism as have been observed in previous years, especially from those who would soon join the university system.”

However, the panel said it was unfortunate that many of the candidates did not seem to understand the topic or what was expected from them because: “Some wrote in the letter form instead of the essay form; many of them used bullets to present their ideas in segments; many of them concentrated on the ASUU strike that was subsisting at that time, even though the topic was conceptual and not actual; some were very passionate about the strike and concentrated more on the history of ASUU, the number of strikes in Nigeria, the roles of successive governments in mitigating ASUU strikes.”

The report added: “Others went ahead to vituperate the members of ASUU and condemn them for often interrupting the education of Nigerian youth, among many other things rather than suggesting viable and practical ways of addressing the issue at hand.”

A Nigerian lady has taken to social media to share an emotional story about a male friend who recently traveled abroad.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has announced that he is giving away his $124 billion fortune.

Bezos revealed this in a sit-down interview with CNN. He said he plans to donate the majority of his net worth to charities during his lifetime, and these funds will be dedicated towards fighting climate change, as well as supporting people who can help to heal political and social divisions.

When asked if he intends to donate the majority of his wealth within his lifetime, Bezos said "Yeah, I do.

Without providing further details, Bezos said he and partner journalist-turned-philanthropist Lauren Sanchez were "building the capacity to be able to give away this money".

The billionaire has committed $10 billion to fight climate change and protect nature through the Bezos Earth Fund, where he is the executive chair.

Speaking alongside his partner, Lauren Sánchez, from his Washington DC home, Bezos added:

"The hard part is figuring out how to do it in a levered way.

A schoolboy has scored the highest possible score in a Mensa IQ test and surpassed geniuses like Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking.

11-year-old Brainy Yusuf Shah from Leeds, England, scored 162 - the highest possible score for under 18s. His score places him ahead of Einstein and Hawkings by two points.

Yusuf said he wanted to test himself by taking the IQ quiz after his mates kept telling him how smart he was.

He ended up scoring in the top 1% of people.

Yusuf said: "Everyone at school thinks I am very smart and I have always wanted to know if I was in the top 2% of the people who take the test.

"It feels special to have a certificate for me and about me."

The child genius, who hopes to study Maths at Oxbridge, said when he is not studying he enjoys Sudoku and finishing Rubik's cubes.

His mum Sana said: "I was so proud. He is the first person to take the Mensa test in the family.

"I was actually a little concerned too - he has always gone into a hall full of kids to take tests.

"We thought he might be intimidated by the adults at the centre. But he did brilliantly."

However, his mum jokes to him that his dad is still smarter.

"I still tell him 'your dad is still smarter than you'," his mum quipped.
