An investigation by SaharaReporters suggests that Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State orchestrated a false and misleading campaign when he recently asserted that his state had earned $5 million by exporting vegetables. Speaking recently in Abuja, Mr. Obiano said his government had boosted agricultural exports and was selling millions worth of vegetables, mostly to Europe. Reports also said that these exports earnings are from pumpkin leaves and bitter leaves. BY SAHARA REPORTERS, NEW YORKJUL 28, 2016 An investigation by SaharaReporters suggests that Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State orchestrated a false and misleading campaign when he recently asserted that his state had earned $5 million by exporting vegetables. Speaking recently in Abuja, Mr. Obiano said his government had boosted agricultural exports and was selling millions worth of vegetables, mostly to Europe. Reports also said that these exports earnings are from pumpkin leaves and bitter leaves. SaharaReporters has found that, as part of Mr. Obiano’s campaign, he used images allegedly from Anambra farms depicting luscious produce, including red tomatoes. The governor’s public relations stunt has been circulating on Internet platforms featuring photos of tomato farms said to be producing “European standard” tomatoes. However, when SaharaReporters reverse-image-searched the photos being circulated by Mr. Obiano’s government, our investigators found that the images were lifted from other websites but deceptively identified as photos from Anambra farms. For example, an image of young vegetable plants actually comes from an Internet page from August 13, 2014, titled “Irrigation Practices in West Africa.” Another photo circulated by Mr. Obiano can be traced back to a 2010 blog post by an American named Chris Courtin, who had taken the photo during his fellowship in Nyumbani Village in Kitui County, Kenya. In his blog post Mr. Courtin wrote about the tomatoes saying, “they grow mostly tomatoes in the greenhouses and they were the biggest tomato vines I had ever seen” and “aside from picking tomatoes I also picked cow peas.” Blog belonging to Chris Courtin Chris Courtin Our investigations learned that, as word began to spread that some photos released by the state government may have been taken from other sources, his team swung into action to create a series of photo events to demonstrate how well Anambra’s agricultural sector is doing. The desperate attempts resulted in several photo ops featuring rural farmers standing around a modest pile of leafy greens and in front of an Anambra State banner stating “Anambra State Government Agriculture Export Programme” and “Willie is Working”. One woman was photographed using her teeth to tear the leaves supposedly meant for export to Europe. Sahara Reporters Media Our investigators also found out that officials of Anambra State also visited the cargo section of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos to pose with agricultural produce headed to South Africa with hurriedly made banners draped over one or two of the cargo parcels. "Willie is Working" Sahara Reporters Media SaharaReporters attempted to reach Mr. Obiano to ask certain questions, including information on the location of state farms large enough to produce agricultural products worth $5 million in exports, the specific companies used to ship the produce, and end-receiver documents from European buyers, but we were not able to reach him or any of his officials at the time of publication. |

The Ministry of Finance on Sunday said the list of those suspected to be involved in the manipulation of government payroll and allegedly injected ‘ghost’ workers had been sent to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for investigation and prosecution. The development was confirmed by the Media Adviser to the Minister of Finance, Mr. Festus Akanbi, while responding to enquiries from one of our correspondents. Akanbi stated, “The ministry has sent the list of those involved in the ‘ghost’ workers scam to the EFCC and they (EFCC’s operatives) are the ones investigating the matter.” Findings revealed that while some of the perpetrators of the ‘ghost’ workers scam were being investigated, others had been charged to court by the anti-graft agency. An official in the Ministry of Finance confided in The PUNCH that the prosecution of some of those that were charged to court was being slowed down owing to the fact that the court was in recess. The Presidential Initiative on Continuous Audit had, last week, said it found discrepancies on the payroll of the Federal Government’s Ministries, Agencies and Departments to the tune of N6.4bn. The Head of the Continuous Audit Team, Mr. Mohammed Dikwa, had told journalists in Kano on the sidelines of the two-day National Revenue Retreat, organised by the Ministry of Finance, that the amount was the true state of their findings as of June 30, 2016. President Muhammadu Buhari had set up the Continuous Audit Team to look into the finances of Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies to arrest the menace of ‘ghost’ workers, over payment of allowances, fraud and embezzlement in then MDAs. Dikwa had said, “The Continuous Audit Team plans to conduct regular checks on the control and risk assessment of MDAs. We look at the records that are being kept to ensure transparency and accountability of the financial transactions carried over time. “In terms of ‘ghost’ workers, we have found about 43,000 ghost workers so far and as of May 30, we had N4.2bn that is saved on a monthly basis. “But as of June 30, we were able to make more recoveries of N2.2bn, which has led to an additional savings of N6.4bn monthly.” Recently, the Adamawa State Government said the recent clean-up of its payroll, involving local government employees in the state, which uncovered 12,000 ‘ghost’ workers, saved the state government N500m. The state Commissioner for Finance, Mahmood Yunusa, who made the disclosure in Yola, the state capital, stated that the state government derived the figure from the report submitted by the committee which carried out the verification. He said, “According to the report submitted to the state government by the Staff Verification Committee, it said N500m has been saved. This is the amount which could have gone into lining the pockets of ‘ghost’ workers.” He, however, admitted that the amount was fluid since there might have been some genuine workers whose names could have been omitted. The state government had alleged that the state verification had uncovered 12,000 ‘ghost’ workers in the state, which had been denied by some union officials. Also, a total of 3,916 ‘ghost’ workers were uncovered in Enugu State. The discovery followed a staff audit conducted in the 17 local government areas in the state. The audit verified the number of workers employed in all the councils, including teachers. Presenting the report of a verification panel to Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, the Speaker, Enugu State House of Assembly, Edward Ubosi, who headed the committee, said the discovery of the ‘ghost’ workers saved the state N161.4m monthly. The Nigeria army has confirmed the sack of
about 50 senior military officers over ongoing
allegation of professional misconduct.
In a statement early Saturday morning, Army
spokesman Colonel Sani Usman said the army
council has approved the retirement of some
senior officers.
Usman said those retired were mainly some
Major Generals, Brigadier Generals, Colonels,
Lieutenant Colonels and a Major.
He said: “their retirement was based on Service
exigencies. It should be recalled that not too
long ago some officers were investigated for
being partisan during the 2015 General
Elections.”
He added that: “Similarly, the investigation by
the Presidential Committee investigating Defence
Contracts revealed a lot. Some officers have
already been arraigned in court by the Economic
and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).”
Usman said: “People should therefore not read
this out of context. The military must remain
apolitical and professional at all times.”
He added that the army applaud and support this
laudable and bold initiative by the government. |

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Dibuinsisted that the 2016 CBT UTME will not be cancelled, despite pressure from a section of the public. Ojerinde, who was reacting to the protests held by UTME candidates demanding for cancellation of the CBT results, said that the conduct of public examination in Nigeria has become a war. He said that the protests was sponsored to discredit the good work the Board is doing in the efforts to strengthen the quality of tertiary education in the country. The registrar disclosed that the organizer of the protest who incidentally was an owner of a centre designated for the examination was aggrieved because he was not allowed by the JAMB officials at the centre to perpetrate examination malpractice. He explained how a JAMB official at the Lagos Centre was threatened after rejecting N6 million bribe offer, saying this prompted the relocation of the candidates at the centre to Moro in Osun State. The JAMB boss added that the owner of the centre, in the effort to justify money he collected illegally from parents and candidates organised the protest in Lagos. It was also reported that a lady who was arrested at the centre for impersonation, confessed that she and others were paid N25,000 each to do the job. Another incident took place at Uromi Centre in Edo State, where mercenaries hired to perpetrate massive examination malpractices were exposed by the JAMB official on ground. |

WHERE IS THE CHANGE!!! DONALD TRUMP INSULTS NIGERIA ADMINISTRATION Donald Trump, a front-line US presidential contender blast Nigeria for claiming to be giant of Africa. One of The highest producer of crude oil in Africa without nothing tangible to show for it. 56 years after independence, Nigerian leaders still can’t deliver “Ordinary” electricity, water, home-refined petroleum products, transportation – road, rail, water and air – infrastructure. Here’s a quote from Donald Trump, a front- line US presidential contender: “Look at African countries like Nigeria or Kenya for instance, those people are stealing from their own government and go to invest the money in foreign countries. From the government to the opposition, they only qualify to be used as a case study whenever bad examples are required. How do you trust even those who have run away to hide here in the United States, hiding behind education? I hear they abuse me in their blogs but I don’t care because even the internet they are using is ours and we can decide to switch it off from this side. These are people who import everything including matchsticks. In my opinion, most of these African countries [like Nigeria] ought to be recolonized again for another 100 years because they know nothing about leadership and self-governance.” I hope these is a wake up call to our dealers calling them selfs.. . |
