Lingering European Dreams Inter might have been dominating Serie A with ease and comfort but when it comes to performing in the Champions League, the Nerazzurri have been a huge disappointment. They might have won the Scudetto for the past four seasons in a row but for the last three years they have not gone beyond the Round of 16 in Europe's premier club competition. Interestingly, in the last two years Inter have fallen to English opposition. In 2007-08 it was Rafael Benitez's Liverpool who knocked them out of Europe's most prestigious club competition while last year eventual finalists Manchester United defeated them 2-0 on aggregate in the pre-quarter finals. This time too the Beneamata have a Premier League side to contend with and it will be interesting to see how they cope, especially as Jose Mourinho will be on the bench against his former club. Inter's form has taken a dip towards the south too in recent times. Their fiery, controversy-laden 0-0 draw with Sampdoria on Saturday night was their third draw in a row in the league and the second Serie A match in succession in which they have failed to score. Roma's and Milan's respective victories at the weekend mean that Inter's lead at the top of the table has now been trimmed to five points, which could be down to four if Milan win their game in hand against Fiorentina on Wednesday evening. However, Jose Mourinho's side cannot be dismissed until the final whistle has been blown at Stamford Bridge in the second leg. Perhaps Chelsea will start the tie as slight favourites but Inter haven't lost at home yet this season - in fact, the last time Mourinho lost any domestic home game was way back in 2002 - and this time they have a more compact, well-knit team that is not over-reliant on any one particular player. Of course, except Wesley Sneijder, the former European champions do not have a single world class ball-playing midfielder but their two main strikers Samuel Eto'o and Diego Milito are exceptional and Inter should give themselves a good chance of destabilising a strong Chelsea defensive unit. Basking In Hope And Expectations Chelsea might be a 'nouveau riche' club with not much European pedigree but they have certainly been more prominent and successful in Europe than Inter since the turn of the century. The Premier League side have failed to make it to the semi-finals only once in the past six years and reached the final in 2008. Last season the Blues were knocked out of the competition on the away goals rule. Guus Hiddink's side did a great job in restricting Barcelona from scoring in the first leg of their semi-final tie at Camp Nou and although they took the lead at Stamford Bridge in the ninth minute, Chelsea conceded an injury time equaliser to go out on the away goals rule. Therefore, this time Carlo Ancelotti's Chelsea will be more motivated and eager to perform in the Champions League. They have been doing great in the Premier League and went four points clear of Manchester United at the top of the table at the weekend with a 2-0 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers away from home. The Blues' defence has been superbly watertight this term, as they have shipped in just 22 goals in 27 matches in the league and four in six in the group stage of the Champions League. However, Chelsea haven't come up against very stiff competition in Europe so far this campaign. Inter were drawn in a group that was comprised of the domestic champions of Spain, Italy, Ukraine and Russia, and they still managed to progress through to the knockout stages, finishing just two points behind Barcelona, while the only truly competitive team that Chelsea had to face in their group was Porto. Ancelotti knows all about the current Inter side, having been involved in several games against them during his eight-year coaching tenure with Milan. The Italian will also be aware that Inter can be cynically defensive at times at home in order to not concede any goals, but with Didier Drogba in red-hot form the 50-year-old will expect his side them to score at San Siro on Wednesday night. TEAM NEWS Inter Cristian Chivu is out until March with injury while Marco Materazzi and Davide Santon are doubtful for this fixture. Mario Balotelli should be back in contention for a place in the Inter squad after missing the weekend game against Sampdoria. First-choice custodian Julio Cesar has suffered bruises to his face after smashing his Lamborghini in a road accident near the San Siro on Sunday night. His injury is not said to be serious but there is still a doubt whether he can start against Chelsea on Wednesday night. Probable Lineup (4-3-1-2): Julio Cesar; Maicon, Lucio, Samuel, Zanetti; Cambiasso, Muntari, Thiago Motta; Sneijder; Eto'o, Milito Chelsea Chelsea have received some welcome news ahead of their trip to Milan as both Alex and Juliano Belletti have made the squad. Alex has overcome his knee injury and Belletti is back in action after a month out with a knee injury. Jose Bosingwa, Michael Essien and Ashley Cole are long-term injury concerns and have not been included in the squad and neither has Yury Zhirkov. Deco is also unavailable but Frank Lampard is back for Wednesday night's fixture. Probable Lineup (4-3-3): Cech; Belletti, Terry, Carvalho, Ivanovic; Mikel, Ballack, Cole; Lampard, Drogba, Anelka. Barcelona's Xavi, Daniel Alves And Zlatan Ibrahimovic Train Normally Ahead Of Stuttgart Clash Barcelona have received a boost ahead of their Champions League clash against Stuttgart, with the news that Xavi, Daniel Alves and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are fit to play. According to Marca, Ibrahimovic, who has been suffering from a right ankle injury, is fully fit to play. In addition, Pep Guardiola confirmed that Xavi and Daniel Alves are also ready for selection. Barca will be without Eric Abidal and Seydou Keita, as well as Dymytro Chygrynskiy, who is cup tied. |

Gross Improvement Lying ninth in the Bundesliga, Stuttgart will approach their midweek encounter against Barcelona with some confidence, despite their relatively mediocre league standing. Die Schwaben’s league form under the charge of Markus Babbel was lamentable. In their opening 15 games of the season they managed only two victories in Bundesliga play, and though they would march through to the Champions League last 16, they only progressed in an unconvincing style from a weak group containing Rangers, Unirea Urziceni and Sevilla. It wasn’t actually Babbel who would land Stuttgart a spot in the knockout rounds as he had been jettisoned a matter of hours before die Roten met the Romanians in a decisive fixture at the Mercedes-Benz Arena. A comfortable 3-1 success was earned, teeing up Christian Gross perfectly to lead a major improvement in the club’s fortunes. The Swiss has worked wonders over the winter period, breathing new life into a campaign that previously seemed fraught with danger. In eight top flight games he has claimed six victories and one draw, while his side have found the net 20 times, in comparison to the 12 goals they scored in nearly twice as many fixtures previously. Undoubtedly Stuttgart, who now occupy a comfortable mid-table position in Germany’s elite, can go into Tuesday’s encounter with hope, having thrashed Koeln 5-1 at the weekend. Barca will, of course, provide a big step up, but the Schwaben have already made giant strides in recent times. Not At Their Peak Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona were shocked little over a week ago, when they fell victim to one of Atletico Madrid’s best displays of the season. That 2-1 loss against los Colchoneros represented their first Primera Division reverse of the campaign but la Blaugrana bounced back superbly last weekend, claiming a 4-0 victory over Racing Santander to set themselves up perfectly for the midweek trip to Germany. Goals from Andres Iniesta, Thierry Henry, Rafael Marquez and Thiago helped the Catalan club, who were badly depleted by injury, to a simple victory, though captain Carles Puyol believes there is room for improvement yet. “We are always very demanding of ourselves and ask if we are capable of more because the coach knows that we can do better,” he said after that game. “We were perhaps not brilliant but we were practical, but we can still give more.” Puyol indicated that there is still a great deal of confidence in Barca’s squad, though warned against “expensive errors” in Germany. The European champions did not qualify to the last 16 with the comfort that might have been expected of them. Defeat against Rubin Kazan at Camp Nou helped make life extremely awkward for Guardiola’s side, who eventually ran out group winners ahead of Inter by claiming a 2-1 success over Dynamo Kiev in matchday 6. After that somewhat uncertain start to the defence of their title, a little more application and force is needed in Germany. TEAM NEWS Stuttgart Ivorian full-back Boka has picked up a shoulder injury that threatens to rule him out for a month and certainly means he is not fit to feature against Barca. Sami Khedira didn’t play at the weekend, though there are indications he could return for this fixture. Probable Starting XI: Lehmann; Celozzi, Tasci, Delpierre, Molinaro; Gebhart, Kuzmanovic, Trasch, Hleb; Cacau, Pogrebnyak Barcelona After a couple of weeks of injury torment, things seem to be easing slightly for Guardiola, who has picked a 20-man travelling party. Dimitro Chygrynskiy misses out again due to his ineligibility, but there is better news regarding Xavi and Daniel Alves, who are both involved in the squad. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is doubtful due to an ankle problem, however. Eric Abidal and Seydou Keita aren’t ready to return just yet. Probable Starting XI: Valdes; Dani Alves, Puyol, Pique, Maxwell; Xavi, Toure, Iniesta; Messi, Ibrahimovic, Henry LINK |

Xavi And Dani Alves Included In Barcelona's Champions League Clash Versus Stuttgart Barcelona duo Xavi Hernandez and Dani Alves have been named in the club’s Champions League squad for the trip to Germany to face Stuttgart in midweek. Alves has been out for two weeks with a knee complaint, but has been passed fit enough to be included in Pep Guardiola’s squad, while Xavi limped out of last weekend’s defeat to Atletico Madrid and was expected to be out of action for another week, but like Alves will travel to Germany. Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been included in the 20-man squad for the first leg of the last sixteen match, despite being plagued by a persistent ankle problem that flared up during the Blaugrana’s comfortable 4-0 versus Racing Santander at the Camp Nou on Saturday evening. Dimitro Chygrynskiy is the most notable absentee as he is ineligible to play in European competition due his appearance with Shakhtar Donetsk early in the season. The full squad list is as follows: Valdés, Pinto, Alves, Piqué, Márquez, Puyol, Xavi, Iniesta, Ibrahimovic, Messi, Bojan, Henry, Busquets, Pedro, Milito, Maxwell, Toure, Jeffren, Bartra and Jonathan. |

Barcelona's Yaya Toure And Dmytro Chygrynskiy Back In Full Training ![]() As reported by Marca, Yaya Toure and Dmytro Chygrynskiy returned to train normally with Barcelona this morning as both the Ivorian and Ukrainian seem to have recovered from their respective injuries. This favourable news comes on the heels of a nightmarish week for the Blaugrana, who at one point had Chygrynskiy, Toure, Eric Abidal, Dani Alves, Xavi Hernandez and Seydou Keita all out with injury. Barca received even better news than expected as both Xavi and Dani Alves took to the training pitch to complete a light jog, and Alves also did a few exercises with the ball. While it seems unlikely that either will make a return to the squad for Saturday's match against Racing Santander at the Camp Nou, it is possible that they could be included for next week's Champions League encounter against Stuttgart. |

Barcelona's Dani Alves, Yaya Toure And Dmytro Chygrynskiy Return To Training Barcelona's injury woes continue to progress favourably as both Yaya Toure and Dmytro Chygrynskiy returned to train with their team-mates, albeit only for some light jogging. As reported by Sport, both players hope to be available in time for Barca's Liga fixture against Racing Santander. Dani Alves was also a pleasant participant on the training pitch and although the Brazilian was confined to a few exercises with the ball, he hopes to be available to coach Pep Guardiola in the next few matches. Despite the good news in terms of recoveries, Marc Bartra, Jonathan Dos Santos and Thiago Alcantara of the Barca reserve team were also included in training and could be part of Guardiola's team this weekend against Racing. |

Alves trained for the first time today, although in isolation from the rest of the group. Josep Guardiola’s side returned to work on Monday after suffering their first defeat of the league season in Madrid. Several players were missing for what was essentially a session designed for recovery and which involved six members of the reserves. It was great to see Dani Alves back on the pitch again. In the company of a fitness coach, the Brazilian full back did some jogging with the ball at his feet. http://www.fcbarcelona.com/web/english/noticies/futbol/temporada09-10/02/15/n100215109322.html |
