This happened this afternoon at Ire-akari junction, Okeletu, along Ijede Road in Ikorodu. The car lost control, vied off the road and rammed into shops along the road. The driver sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital.But thankfully, no life was lost in the incident. Scientists at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore have unveiled “Nadine,” a socially intelligent, human-looking robot complete with “her own personality, mood and emotions,” according to a university news release. The humanoid “receptionist” was presented at a new media showcase Tuesday at NTU, where her human creator, professor Nadia Thalmann, predicted that “physical social robots such as Nadine are poised to become more visible in offices and homes in future.” Nadine was created to be a doppelganger of Thalmann, according to NTU’s news release, which said the “humanoid” has “soft skin and flowing brunette hair. She smiles when greeting you, looks at you in the eye when talking, and can also shake hands with you.” The bot “can be happy or sad, depending on the conversation” and she “also has a good memory” with the ability to recognize people she’s met and remember what those people have said before, NTU said. The university added that “Nadine is powered by intelligent software similar to Apple’s Siri or Microsoft’s Cortana.” “As countries worldwide face challenges of an aging population, social robots can be one solution to address the shrinking workforce, become personal companions for children and the elderly at home, and even serve as a platform for healthcare services in future,” Thalmann said, according to the NTU news release. “This is somewhat like a real companion that is always with you and conscious of what is happening,” she added. “So in future, these socially intelligent robots could be like C-3PO, the iconic golden droid from ‘Star Wars’, with knowledge of language and etiquette.” A video posted to NTU’s Facebook page shows Nadine recognizing Thalmann and engaging in conversation with her. The Federal Government has explained how it would fund the N5,000 monthly welfare payment to vulnerable Nigerians just as it reaffirmed that the Boko Haram insurgency had been technically suppressed. Lai Mohammed revealed this in a talk with Vanguard. He said beneficiaries of the N5,000 monthly payment would be required to meet conditions, including enrolment into the country’s development agenda. He said that the funding of the N5,000 welfare scheme would be achieved through intervention, saying “What we want to achieve by our social intervention of which the conditional transfer is just one part, is to move out millions of Nigerians from poverty. That is why we have this half a trillion naira social intervention. “Part of what we intend to do with the half a trillion naira is to train market women, artisans and unemployed graduates in the art of management and also give them loans to start their own businesses. Part of our social intervention also includes the transfer of N5,000 to the most vulnerable people. A certain Nigerian student, one Ebinabo Mendeinyo, was on December 26, stabbed to death in Cyprus by another Nigerian, Udumioh Jerry, fondly called MC Jerry. North Cyprus police debunked earlier claims that the deceased jumped from the 6th floor of his apartment building out of fear when some unidentified boys confront him, according to reports by Daily Mail. Pointing out that they found stab wounds on his body. MC Jerry, who doubles as a comedian and event host, was the first person the police arrested in connection with the murder. According to the report, Jerry, a popular comedian and event host, resident in Cyprus as the deceased, was the first person the police arrested in connection with the murder. Although the reason for the murder is yet to be ascertained, a police source alleged that the fight started on Christmas Eve at a certain party, allegedly over a Zimbabwean girl. It was said that an unidentified person got stabbed at the club that night and the following day, the fight was allegedly taken to the victim’s student apartment. Ebinabo, reports revealed, was believed to have been stabbed multiple times by about six boys alleged to be fellow Nigerians. They allegedly first drove to his friend’s house, kidnapped him and forced him to take them to the house. They made him knock so that the victim would open the door without suspecting. However, when Ebinabo opened the door, he was allegedly stabbed and his throat slit. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is set to protest the looming removal of fuel subsidy proposed by the federal government, calling all its state councils and affiliate unions to get ready. This was revealed in a statement by the General Secretary of the NLC, Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson,on Tuesday, where he said that the NLC was determined to fight the surreptitious removal of the fuel subsidy. He said that a meeting of the National Executive Committee of the congress would be convened in January, although he did not reveal the date. The NLC’s scribe wondered why opposition politicians who encouraged the mass action against the former administration to remove the fuel subsidy were now agitating for its removal. Ozo-Eson argued that the removal of the fuel subsidy without the capacity to refine crude oil for local consumption would unleash hardship on workers and indeed the average Nigerian. He said the different pump prices for fuel recently announced by the Minister of State for Petroleum, Mr. Ibe Kachikwi, were meant to confuse Nigerians to remove the fuel subsidy. Former Newcastle United, Sheffield Wednesday and West Ham goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek has died at the age of 47. Srnicek suffered a cardiac arrest in Czech Republic while running on Dec. 20th and has been in coma since then. His life support was pulled off yesterday after his family gave the go-ahead. Srnicek played for Newcastle between 1991 and 1998, helping them win promotion to the top flight during the 1992-93 season. He returned to the club on a season-long deal in September 2006 as cover for the injured Shay Given. May his soul rest in peace. Amen. Cc..lalasticlala

Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress, (NLC), Edo State chapter has applauded Gov. Adams Oshiomhole for the prompt payment of workers’ salaries, describing the state as lucky, unlike some other states in the country. The Chairman, Emmanuel Ademokun in a statement, described Oshiomhole’s seven years reign as a huge success, pointing out that the governor’s efforts in blocking leakages in the ministries had yielded fruit. He appealed to governors of other states to emulate Governor Oshiomhole in the payment of salaries, saying, “It is very sad today that some of our colleagues went home for Christmas and New Year without getting their November and December salaries. “That is why we sincerely thank our governor for his unflinching commitment in the payment of worker’s salaries up to date. Our governor has clearly shown that he is a man of distinction who sees workers as assets and not liabilities.” It will be recalled that Edo workers went into jubilation on the 21st of December after they received alerts for the payment of December salaries from the state government. Following the clash between the Army and Boko Haram Insurgents in Maiduguri, the Army has released a statement to brief the public about the matter and also to reassure Nigerians about their efforts to maintain security. See statement below… “This evening (yesterday), troops of Operation Lafiya Dole, intercepted and destroyed 10 suspected Boko Haram terrorists suicide bombers at the outskirts of Maiduguri city. Contrary to earlier media reports and rumours flying around, 2 Boko Haram terrorists suspected suicide bombers earlier intercepted by vigilant troops disclosed their colleagues intent to enter the city with the aim of detonating bombs in selected public places. Consequently, the troops laid ambush on the terrorists suspected routes along Damboa road and eliminated them. The suicide bombers were intercepted in 3 different locations approaching the city; Ajiri area towards Damboa road, High Court axis and the Eye Hospital Area. The Explosive Ordinance Device team has been mobilized and they are combing the general area as well as clearing the debris. Normalcy has been restored to the general area and the public are please advised to go about their normal businesses and social activities.
