I don't think that the gully erosion in the SE has to do with oil and gas extraction in the SS and SE. It's largely because of indiscriminate deforestation and poor building/ road construction planning.but if you have any interesting academic journal on it, please share.

The oil producing states have been receiving massive compensation and still does if you see the huge revenue allocations to them every month. They are not being creative and honest with the money they receive because the political will supports such corrupt system.
It is up to the people from those areas to hold their leaders accountable. If they don't, trust me, the oil and gas extraction industry is not what failed their future, it is their past, current and future leaders.

Oil producing state leaders are supposed to be investing massively in agriculture , education, environmental conservation, not building long stretches of roads, multiple bridges, massive houses etc as they are currently doing in sandfilled towns they create by destroying the little fauna and flora which serves as natural buffer and protection between them and massive flooding in the future. It has happened in Otuoke where HE GEJ destroyed a largely substantial part of their natural forest environment to build a Federal university, FMC, military formations, estates, bridges, roads etc. The environment gets so flooded that even he could hardly live comfortably in his house in Otuoke, Ogbia , Bayelsa state.

What is the point in building structures that will one day go underwater especially after the oil would have significantly dwindled. Smh

The oil producing areas of the Niger delta region receive a pittance from the resources in their immediate vicinity. The difficult terrain of the Niger delta region necessecitates more percentage than what is given from derivation so far. Rather, much of the proceeds from oil is funnelled to the old Northern region through
proliferation of 20 new federating units in the old Northern region, but a meagre number of 17 states in the two southern regions. Land mass or population figures is NEVER used as yardstick to proliferate too many states or regions in an area with larger land mass or population, in a country formed by different regions.
The 36 states political structure created by northern military dictators who created 20 states in one region, but 17 states for 2 regions, remains the hugest FRAUD about Nigeria.
The oil producing areas of the Niger delta region should have become like Dubai if not that the proceeds of oil from the Niger delta region is denied the region.

Abeg pray the governor of Abambra state to complete the road to Orlu.
Politicians from Orlu zone governing Imo state think that if they repair the road, they are doing good to only the former gov of Imo who comes from Orlu local government area. That gov from Orlu local government area got the MCC in 2000 who reconstructed the road.
This is the Orlu section of the Ihialla-Orlu federal road.

But much of the SS region's environment has been destroyed by oil pollution. Too many people from the SS who can afford to leave the region now live in Abuja and in Lagos.
The gully erosion which ravages much of the SE region is associated to oil exploration in the nearby SS region, and in the SE region proper. But we see people say to easterners: go back to your erosion ravaged east.
There is no or tiny compensation to the oil producing areas for the pollution of their environment.

Why will the amendment to return to regional government system not succeed?

The north which opposed it has seen the devastation and poverty which the present unitary government system has wrecked on Nigeria, especially in the North.
If for example, Sharia criminal justice system is allowed in the constitution of the region of Northern Nigeria, there is no reason for Boko Haram to emerge and say it's fighting for a country to be governed with Sharia criminal justice system. Now see the havoc wrecked by Boko Haram on Nigeria as a whole. Tourism money is lost to Nigeria. Many countries live on income from tourists.
There should have been no need for later days secessionist groups to emrge if regional government system is in practice in Nigeria. The present type of unitary government system introduced by northern military dictators with their constitution to legit the fraudulent political structure and unitary government system they created; has been suffocating all in Nigeria.

Return Nigeria first to regional government system. Who the people in any region choose to lead them is secondary. Any region that chooses to elect leaders who desire for the region to be governed with Sharia criminal justice system or to commit much of the region's income to pilgrimages, it's up to the region.
But it's stupeed to believe that Nigeria can progress on its present suffocating unitary government system.

Nigeria has close to a million persons in its armed forces.
How Simon Ekpa succeeds in ordering and enforcing sit at home in Igbo land in the presence of the armed forces does not bother Reno Omokri. The armed forces can easily preempt Ekpa's sit at home orders from being enforced, if Nigeria's govt wants.

It's only in Nigeria that a candidate wins election through a political party and the party's ideology but defects to another political party, yet aspires to retain the same seat which belongs to the former political party.

Keep watching; APC appointed higher court judges in Abuja may find technicalities to quash this noble judgment by the lower court in Rivers state.

Some states that began with many urban centres have been reduced to one city state. Imo for example.
