HP has officially announced that it is splitting into two companies. Hewlett-Packard is going to spin off its PC and printer division leaving its Enterprise and services unit as separate business. Dion Weisler will take the wheel of the HP’s new PC and printer business. Sadly, however, the company is going to rise the planned layoffs from 45,000 to 55,000. Rumors surrounding the reason for the split suggest that HP had failed in its talks to Dell and Lenovo to sell its PC business. 3D printing is also another area where the new company is going to set its focus. “As the market leader in printing and personal systems, an independent HP Inc. will be extremely well positioned to deliver that innovation across our traditional markets as well as extend our leadership into new markets like 3-D printing and new computing experiences — inventing technology that empowers people to create, interact and inspire like never before,” says Weisler. HP expects to see the split complete by the end of the fiscal 2015.

Apple iPhone 6 and its iPhone 6 Plus sibling are already official and available on the market. You can get them both on contract or SIM-free if you like. Yet an internal mistake of some sort by Verizon saw an early adopter receive an iPhone 6 prototype unit instead of a finalized market-ready device. As it usually goes with the prototypes these days – the device is now on sale on eBay and its current price is $61,300. The prototype is of an iPhone 6 64GB white model. It doesn’t run on any iOS, instead it comes with a true developer’s OS for testing purposes. Apple is guarding such devices very closely yet one managed to slip away, complete with a box. It isn’t clear if anyone will be able to learn something new out of this prototype, but it is still a very rare collectable nevertheless. If you want this prototype, you have three days until the bidding ends.

For whatever reason, Microsoft decided to skip the number 9 entirely and name Windows 10 as the successor to Windows 8.1. The new OS version will unsurprisingly come with the features that have been rumored for the next Windows iteration over the past few months. On the PC side, Windows 10 seems to be all about convincing those who are still sticking with Windows 7 to finally upgrade. So the Start Menu is back, though with a distinct ‘Metro’ vibe. It has tiles and icons that are a blend of classic and new universal apps. Tiles can be resized. The new Search feature in the Start Menu pulls results from the Web as well as local content. Users of Windows with mice and keyboards are finally taken seriously again, with the dual-environment feel of Windows 8 now totally gone (or so Microsoft claims). ‘Modern’ apps can run in windowed mode. Hence, Snap View (launched in Windows 7) now works with both types of apps, and it’s even been expanded to allow for a maximum of four apps to be on the screen at the same time. The company has added something it calls “task view”, which is akin to Expose in OS X, aiming to make multitasking easier (this is pictured in the image below). The oft-leaked multiple desktops feature is indeed in too. And to appease the geeks, the Command Prompt has finally received paste support. For users of Windows 10 on touchscreen devices, the Charms bar is still there, alive and well. This despite some past rumors to the contrary. When you swipe from the left, you’re presented with the task view. If you buy a convertible laptop / tablet that has a touchscreen but can also be used with a keyboard and touchpad or mouse, Microsoft has you covered too, with something it calls Continuum. This switches the UI based on touch or keyboard input. The final build of Windows 10 will be out “later” in 2015, possibly around the middle of the year. Microsoft will talk more about the consumer-facing features inside Windows 10 at its Build conference in April. That’s when we’ll find out more about the new “universal apps”, for example. The “general intent” is to make Windows 10 “available as an update for the vast majority of devices”. Windows 10 will be the next version of Windows Phone too, though it’s still unclear exactly when it will hit phones. Microsoft officials have said they’re developing it (and Windows 10 for ARM-based tablets) at the same time as the version for desktops, trying to “blend the experience” across devices that have screens ranging from 4 inches to 80 inches. A unified application store for every device running Windows 10 has been promised. While the platform will scale to accommodate different hardware, this time it looks like Microsoft has finally learned not to try and use the exact same UI on touch-based devices as on those that come with a mouse and keyboard. So there will be a “single design approach”, but adapted for each class of device.

cao: Not really, basically society has pigeon-holed the word 'gamer' as a young male who plays video games, instead of its original meaning - a person who plays games. No one actively got me into video games, I simply saw it as a brilliant way to enjoy my time. Plus, being born during the golden age of technology also helped, from the floppy disk to PS3 via gameboy, SNES, Sega Gen/Mega & Playstation. I even had the weird joystick one you could connect to the TV.am not insulting u and I do knw the meaning of a gamer but hearing of our naija babes playing games. Today, Apple has proudly announced that it sold over 10 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus units over the first weekend during which they were on sale. This apparently represents a new record for first-weekend iPhone sales, according to the company itself. Though if you were hoping for a breakdown of sales between the two iPhone 6 models, you're out of luck, as Apple didn't provide more details. It's probably safe to assume that the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 massively outsold the bigger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus, which would be nothing out of the ordinary. As mainstream as phablets have become already, they're still generally not better sold than more pocketable smartphones. It's interesting to note that Apple has achieved this 10 million sales milestone despite the fact that the two new iPhones aren't officially available in China yet, nor is there currently a time frame for their release in the world's biggest smartphone market. Last Friday, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus went on sale in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore, and the UK. 20 more countries and territories will be getting them this Friday, on September 26. And Apple promises to have its two new phones in stores in 115 countries by the end of the year Source:gsmarena.com

LG has decided to take its marketing game to the next level. So much so that it has set a new Guinnes World Record for the largest outdoor advertising structure ever. The advertising campaign in question is for the LG G3 and the billboard the company has built is in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It is 240 meters wide and 12 meters high taking a total space of 3,000 square meters. Unconfirmed information suggests LG has used 1,800 tons of steel to build it. But it’s well worth it, as the company claims 20 million people who travel each year to the King Khalid International Airport, which the billboard is next to, will see it. According to LG’s estimates, this will bring in $25 million in annual revenue. And here’s how the structure looks at night.

A sneaker designer has unveiled the JRDN 4 X PS4, a pair of customised Air Jordan sneakers with design influences from Sony's PlayStation 4. PS4 sneakers The all-black sneakers feature PS4 branding in place of Nike's usual basketball player logo. A HDMI port is embedded into the heel of each shoe, though sadly, the ports don't really do anything but look vaguely cool. The shoes will come with a HDMI cable that can plug into the ports, acting as a sort of "carry cord" for your shoes when you want to show them off without actually putting them on your feet. Designer Jonny Barry of Freaker Sneaks, who describes himself as "brand loyal to Sony's products" in an interview with DualShockers, says that he was inspired to make PS4 shoes after buying the console on release day. "I will be making a limited edition run of 10 of these and they will come with the HDMI cable and custom box," Barry says. "Price is unconfirmed as of yet, but will probably be around $950 USD for the total package." PS4 sneakers If you have a spare grand lying around that you really don't know what to do with, you can email Jonny Barry or contact him through the Freaker Sneaks Instagram account to register your interest in procuring a pair.
