Foreign Affairs / Brazilian Man Electrocuted At A Political Rally After Climbing Electrical Pylon by kinggenesis(m): 5:43am On Aug 04, 2016
A man was electrocuted after scaling a pylon ahead of a speech by suspended Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff.

The unnamed victim, who was wearing just a pair of beach shorts, appeared to grow more and more animated as supporters warmed up the crowd for the female politician at a political rally in Aracaju in the northern state of Sergipe.

After spending several minutes clinging to the pylon and waving a flag, he ignored warnings from bystanders to get down and climbed further up the pole towards the danger area where the electricity cables were attached.

Footage taken on a mobile phone showed a huge
flash and sparks flying as he was electrocuted
before falling to the ground. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but died of his injuries on the way.
Local reports said he was believed to be a street
beggar aged between 20 and 25. He suffered a heart attack and head injuries.

The tragedy happened on Monday afternoon.
Rousseff, who is facing an impeachment trial,
claimed in her speech she was innocent of any
wrongdoing and accused her opponents of a
campaign to remove her from power.
It emerged on Tuesday she will not attend the
torch ceremony opening the Rio 2016 Olympic
Games.

Nairaland / General / Fear Is Good Because...... by kinggenesis(m): 3:54am On Jul 29, 2016
By Abieyuwa Ima-Edomwonyi

Fear is often seen as a sign of weakness. Sometimes you may even hear things like ‘fear is of the Devil’…. But wait, before I go on; let me ask you, what are you scared of? In the course of writing this article, I realized how very broad the topic “fear” is, so I will streamline it and tell you the kind of fear I speak of.

I’m not talking about the morbid fear of dangerous animals, or the fear of heights or water (or any other phobia). The fear referred to here is the one that grips you when you think about your dreams, that almost choke you, the worry about leaving your passion, when you consider quitting your job to start a business of your own, when you think about creating/doing something that nobody has ever done before, when you have a plan so big that the thought of achieving it overwhelms you.

An unknown wise one once said that if your dreams don’t scare you, they are not big enough. Fear makes your dreams real; it directly reflects how badly you want your dreams to come true. The more scared you are, the more you want it and that is the more reason why you should go for it! ”If your dreams don’t scare you, they are not big enough”.

Every great dream is naturally scary. Fear is a good indicator that what you are about to do is something great. “Everything great is on the other side of fear”…. To reach your greatness, fear has to be overcome.

You know those video games that feature a dungeon scene, where there’s a monster standing between you and pot of gold and you have to fight and kill that monster to claim your pot of gold? You should see fears as that monster; you have to face it squarely so that you can get to that pot of gold (dreams). Imagine if that monster was not there, the value you will place on the pot of gold will be little to nothing.
“The fear of your dreams makes them much more valuable”.

You need to keep in mind that “Courage in not the absence of fear, it is the mastery of fear”. Embrace your fear and let it propel you to greatness that you are destined for. The first step to embracing this fear is to decide that the magnitude of the desire to achieve your dream is greater than the magnitude of your fear.

“Courage is not the absence of fear, it is the mastery of fear’ – Mark Twain

So, don’t let your fear stop you from achieving that big dream that keeps you at night. Embrace the fear, be friends with it…. And I promise you, your greatness won’t be far off.

Politics / Kogi: What Next After Inauguration? by kinggenesis(m): 6:21am On Jan 27, 2016
By Kingsley Fanwo

Contending with electoral confusion
It is no more news that the unusual occurrence of losing a candidate before the end of the polls has no doubt thrown up an unusual legal challenge.
Could a James Faleke, who never participated in the primaries of the party have replaced his late boss in the supplementary poll? Can a living inherit the votes of the dead? Do the votes of the dead die with him? These and more are some of the questions to be answered by the tribunal.
The next nine months will no doubt test the efficiency of the judiciary as the Kogi scenario is the first of its kind.

Political engagements

Beyond the judiciary, it is expected that the Kogi case may pose further political engagements from the highest political ring as the different camps may go for the broke.

With Faleke seemingly losing all, the Tinubu camp may decide to fight back. Analysts are postulating a fierce political battle ahead.

A lawyer, who craved anonymity told Vanguard that he was afraid Faleke’s case may be thrown out on the ground of lacking “locus standi”. To him, Faleke was never a candidate in the election and may not have the right to challenge a process not involving him.

However, Faleke is also aware of his limitations, hence, he is restricting himself to the argument that the November 21 polls was won and lost and that there was no basis for supplementary polls.

The new political chemistry

The new page in Kogi politics is opening new political alliances with old wounds still aching.
During the governorship primaries, the bulk of Yahaya Bello’s votes came from some party members who had earlier defected to Accord Party after the alleged imposition of candidates by leaders of the party prior to the 2015 general election.

With the victory of Alhaji Yahaya Bello, many of the leaders of the party who defected to other parties are back in APC. The battle for supremacy between the two warring camps may test the political suavity of the new governor.

House of Assembly shake-up

With the emergence of Bello, the leadership of the Kogi State House of Assembly will surely be altered.
The political arrangement in the state is such that the positions of Governor, Deputy and Speaker are to be spread across the three Senatorial Districts of West, Central and East.

As it stands, the Speaker of the House of Assembly is from Kogi Central, same as the Governor-elect. The permutations in the state point to the Deputy Governor emerging from Kogi East, especially if Faleke makes real his threat to excuse himself from the inauguration.

In the above scenario, the Speaker will move to the West and the Deputy Speaker to the Central and Majority Leader to the East.

Already, Prince Yomi Kolawole is being touted as the next Speaker of the House, if he is able to extricate himself from his ties to some opponents of Bello.

In his stead, the House may settle for one of the members representing Yagba East and Yagba West, who are both members of the dominant party in the House.

Operating with minority membership in the House
The political consanguinity of the new governor will also be put to test by the fact that his All Progressives Congress is a minority in the House.

Cordial engagement

However, the governor’s spin doctors are working round the legislators to ensure a robust and cordial engagement with the rival legislators.
Analysts believe the governor may need to heavily lobby opposition legislators to get them on his side.
Populist programmes

Pundits believe Kogites will begin to put the new governor on the spotlight from his first day in office.

Alh. Yahaya Adoza Bello is believed to be ready to put himself right into the minds of the citizenry by addressing the issues of salaries and infrastructures.

The governor may also need to appease the Kogi East people through policies and programmes that will guarantee them security under the new arrangement.

To insiders, this is not the best of jobs. But to Bello, fixing Kogi is a task that must be faced.

Politics / Benue Rerun: Oyegun Backs Onjeh As Former Ministers & Others Defect To APC by kinggenesis(m): 5:37am On Jan 24, 2016

The National Chairman of the All
Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John
Odigie-Oyegun yesterday said the change
administration is committed to impacting
rapid development and urged the people
of Benue South Senatorial District to vote
massively for Comrade Daniel Onjeh in
the forthcoming rerun election.

Oyegun stated this at Otukpo, Benue
State, during the official flag- off of the
Onjeh Senatorial Campaign Organisation
and defection of some PDP stakeholders
and supporters to the APC fold.

According to Oyegun, the time has come
for the people to desist from opposition
politics and support the governing APC to
deliver development to the generality of
the people. He said the change mantra
has come to enhance unity and urged
the people to vote Onjeh to succeed
David Mark.

This came as two former ministers, Jerry
Agada and Sam Ode, ex-Senate president
Ameh Obute and the immediate past
deputy governor of Benue State, Chief
Steven Lawani, as well as the PDP
senatorial candidate in the last general
election, Mike Onoja defected to the
governing APC.

Other PDP chieftains who defected
included Emmanuel Attah John Enyi,
Agada Igomu, Bartholomew Oche, Joseph
Ode, Baba Odangla and several youths
and women.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors,
Senator Obute said they dumped the PDP
in order to say no to corruption, non-
development of the Benue Zone C
Senatorial District, non-payment of
salaries and general undergrowth of the
Idoma nation.

Also, a group of prominent Idoma citizens
under the umbrella of Concerned Idoma
Citizens yesterday called on former
Senate President, David Mark to back out
from the race. The chairman of the
group, Paulinus Okwori stated this In a
statement yesterday.

However, addressing the gathering in
Otukpo, Governor Samuel Ortom said
development of a people can only be
achieved through sincerity of purpose
and the fear of God.

Politics / Army To Establish Identity Of Suspected Boko Haram Leader by kinggenesis(m): 5:27am On Jan 24, 2016

The Nigerian Army said on Saturday that
it had put in place machinery to establish
the true identity of a suspected leader of
the Boko Haram sect, Jarasu Shirawho
was apprehended last week in Borno.

Maj.-Gen. Lucky Irabor, the Deputy
Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya
Dole, disclosed this in an interview with
the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in
Maiduguri.

Irabor said that ascertaining the true
identity of the suspect was to avoid past
mistakes where individuals were arrested
based on mistaken identities.

“We are in custody of a good number of
suspected terrorists that were
apprehended as a result of our routine
operations. One of those suspects is
believed to be on the list of our 100 most
wanted terrorists’ leaders,’’ he said.

Irabor, however, said that the army must
ascertain the true identity of the suspect
before final confirmation to the media.

“There are checks that must be done
before final confirmation, facial attributes
tended to show that he is the one. But
then, there are other things we need to
do to ensure that is he who we said he
is.

“Although the facial attributes confirmed
he is the one, it is not just by looks
alone. We have had cases where we had
mistaken identity, only to come up to say
we are sorry, that is what we are trying
to avoid this time,’’ Irabor explained.

Shira is believed to be the sect leader
around Damboa-Chibok- Askira axis of
Borno before he was apprehended. He is
believed to be one of the masterminds of
the Chibok Girls abduction on April 14,
2014.
