The outcome of the recently concluded Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries in Anambra State has triggered fresh political calculations within the party, with growing attention focused on the role of the national leadership as a wave of grassroots-backed aspirants emerged victorious over several established political figures. The development has placed the party's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, under intense scrutiny as stakeholders await the ratification of the primary election results. Political observers describe the primaries as one of the most significant internal contests in the state's recent political history, producing a new crop of candidates whose emergence is already reshaping the NDC's political landscape in Anambra. Among those reported to have secured the party's tickets are Ifeanyi Iwuchukwu for Onitsha North/South Federal Constituency, Eric Ayamene for Idemili North/South Federal Constituency, Ofumelu Vincent Ekene for Oyi/Ayamelum Federal Constituency, Udekaigbo Chibuzo, PhD, for Ihiala Federal Constituency, Chief Ebuka Onunkwo for Anambra South Senatorial District and Pastor Nonso Nwabueze Oli for Anambra Central Senatorial District. In Anambra North Senatorial District, Senator Tony Nwoye reportedly returned unopposed, a development party members attributed to his performance and widespread grassroots support. The biggest surprise from the primaries, however, was the reported defeat of incumbent Senator Victor Umeh in the contest for the Anambra Central Senatorial ticket, a development that has generated intense debate across political circles in the state. Party insiders told our correspondent that the emergence of the new candidates has unsettled sections of the party establishment, with some displaced stakeholders now looking towards Obi and the NDC national leadership as the ratification process approaches. The situation has consequently transformed what ordinarily would have been a routine post-primary process into a critical test of the party's commitment to internal democracy. Across Anambra State, discussions have intensified over whether the final ratification of candidates will faithfully reflect the verdict delivered at the grassroots level or whether pressure from influential political interests could alter the outcome. For years, Obi has cultivated a political image anchored on transparency, accountability and democratic values. Supporters argue that the current situation offers him an opportunity to reinforce those principles by ensuring that the wishes of delegates and party members are respected. Others contend that any perceived attempt to overturn or dilute the outcome of the primaries could attract criticism and raise questions about the credibility of the process. Political analyst Peter Anaenugwu said the issues arising from the primaries now extend beyond individual victories and defeats. “The issue has gone beyond who won or lost. What is now at stake is the credibility of the process itself and how the party leadership responds to the outcome,” Anaenugwu told our correspondent. As the NDC prepares to conclude its ratification process, political tension continues to build within the party's Anambra chapter. For many observers, the coming days will not only determine the fate of the successful aspirants but could also shape public perception of Peter Obi's commitment to the democratic ideals he has consistently championed throughout his political career. With expectations rising and competing interests jostling for influence, the spotlight remains firmly on Obi as party members await the final confirmation of the primary election results. https://journalist101.com/2026/06/02/pressure-mounts-on-peter-obi-as-new-faces-upend-anambra-ndc-power-structure/

Chiesonu Iziga-Eruchalu has projected Peter Mbah’s women inclusion agenda to an international audience at the 12th Africa Investment & Trade Forum held in Algiers, Algeria. The forum, organised by CAAID in collaboration with the African Union, Afreximbank and the African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat, brought together Presidents, Ministers, Ambassadors, investors, and policymakers from across Africa and beyond. Speaking during a session on Women Empowerment and Inclusion, Dr. Iziga-Eruchalu said she chose to spotlight Enugu State as a practical example of how intentional leadership can transform the role of women in governance and economic development. “When I was given the privilege to speak, I knew exactly where my message had to begin — home. Enugu State. Nigeria,” she said. “Because the most compelling evidence I could bring to an African stage was not a theory or a projection. It was a living, breathing example of what happens when a leader truly believes in women.” She described Governor Peter Mbah as a leader who has moved beyond rhetoric by institutionalising women inclusion across governance and economic structures in the state. “Governor Mbah does not pay lip service to women’s inclusion, he institutionalises it. From policy to appointment, from economic planning to grassroots development, he has made it unmistakably clear that Enugu’s growth story cannot be told without women at its centre,” she stated. According to her, women in Enugu have been appointed into strategic decision-making positions, while female entrepreneurs and business owners continue to benefit from targeted support, market access, and economic opportunities. “The narrative in Enugu has shifted; women are not just beneficiaries of development. They are architects of it,” she added. Dr. Iziga-Eruchalu noted that inclusive governance has contributed to making the state’s economy more dynamic and resilient. “When you include women, you do not just add to the economy, you multiply it,” she declared. She further revealed that she urged African leaders and delegates at the conference to look towards Enugu as a model for visionary and inclusive governance. “I stood before Presidents, Ministers, Ambassadors and leaders from across Africa and said with full conviction — look at Enugu. This is what intentional, passionate, and visionary leadership looks like,” she said. The Nigerian delegate also commended Governor Mbah for creating opportunities for women to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society. “Thank you, Your Excellency, for being the kind of Governor who understands that a state rises when its women rise. You have given us not just a seat at the table, you have given us a voice that echoes far beyond our borders,” she stated. “Today, that voice was heard in Algiers.” https://journalist101.com/2026/05/15/enugu-takes-global-stage-as-dr-chiesonu-iziga-eruchalu-projects-gov-mbahs-women-inclusion-vision-at-afic12/

Chiesonu Iziga-Eruchalu has represented Nigeria at the 12th Africa Investment and Trade Forum (AFIC12) held from May 9 to 10, 2026, at the Sheraton Algiers, placing Enugu State on the continental economic spotlight. The high-level forum, organised in collaboration with the African Union, African Export-Import Bank, and the African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat, attracted top government officials, diplomats, investors, business leaders, and policymakers from more than 43 countries. Iziga-Eruchalu, a public health consultant, certified business and public administrator, researcher, humanitarian, and Managing Director of Glozig Limited and TConsult360, described the conference as one of Africa’s most strategic economic gatherings. “This isn’t just another conference; it is where real deals are made, real partnerships are built, and Africa’s economic future takes shape,” she said. She noted that her participation was driven by a commitment to creating opportunities capable of advancing Enugu State, Nigeria, and the African continent. “My goal is to connect, collaborate, and bring back opportunities that matter for Enugu, Nigeria and Africa at large,” she stated. According to her, the forum provided a rare opportunity for African leaders, investors, and innovators to engage on trade expansion, infrastructure development, economic cooperation, and investment opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade framework. The event featured the presence of the President of the African Union, the President of the African-Arab Women Chamber of Commerce, a former President of Chad, ministers, ambassadors, defence chiefs, and international delegates from countries including Turkey, Tunisia, Senegal, Cameroon, and Ghana. The Caretaker Committee Chairman of Obeagu-Ugwuaji Community, Hon. Okuwudili Joseph, has dismissed the recent protest by some women in the community alleging that their husbands were being hunted, insisting that the demonstration was sponsored and did not reflect the true position of the community. Joseph, alongside the community’s legal representative, Barr. Idam, said the protest against the traditional ruler, HRH Igwe Christopher Ikenga Nyia, was orchestrated by loyalists of the former President General, Mr. Obi Chukwunonso, who they accused of trying to evade accountability over alleged illegal land transactions and financial misconduct. Reacting to the protest, Joseph said most of those seen carrying placards were not genuine members of Obeagu-Ugwuaji but hired individuals brought in to create tension and discredit the traditional ruler. “About 80 percent of those who protested are not even from the community. Many of them were hired and paid. Even from the videos circulating, you can clearly identify people who are not from Obeagu-Ugwuaji,” he said. He described allegations that the Igwe sold community lands and embezzled over N400 million as false and misleading, stressing that the traditional ruler is not the sole signatory to the community’s account. “The Igwe is not the sole signatory to the community’s account. The community operates a Union Bank account with about four signatories. Other signatories must sign before the Igwe can append his signature. There is no way he can single-handedly withdraw such an amount without the approval of the community,” Joseph stated. He further explained that land allocations in the community follow a collective approval process involving multiple officials, including the Town Union President, Secretary, Land Committee Chairman, Land Committee Secretary, the Igwe, and elders of the various kindreds. “There is no way the Igwe can single-handedly allocate land to any company or individual without the consent and approval of all these people,” he added. Joseph accused former President General Obi Chukwunonso of resisting audit since his administration was dissolved in May 2025, alleging that the former leadership was involved in illegal land sales and forgery of land allocation documents. “When we took over in May 2025, our mandate was clear—to audit the former leadership, amend the community constitution, and conduct free and fair elections. Since then, the former PG has resisted every attempt to audit his administration because of alleged illegal land sales carried out by him and his associates,” he said. He claimed that forged land allocation papers and forged signatures of the Igwe had been used to sell land to unsuspecting buyers, with several complaints already lodged at police stations and the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID). “If you go to different police stations and even the FCID, there are reports of forged signatures, including forged signatures of the Igwe. These people have been fighting the Igwe because they want to protect the illegal transactions they carried out,” he stated. Joseph also alleged that the same group had repeatedly disrupted community meetings and intimidated genuine landowners and developers who had fulfilled all community requirements. “Whenever they see developers trying to build in the community, they go there to stop them, even after such persons have paid their dues into the community account. They create problems everywhere because they want to continue collecting illegal levies the government has already warned against,” he said. He urged the public to disregard the protest and challenged the former PG to provide proof of the alleged N400 million embezzlement. “I challenge the former Town Union President to publicly prove where the Igwe embezzled N400 million from. Let them show the account and the transactions. Most of those sponsoring this protest are the same people who were meant to be audited and they are simply trying to divert attention,” he said. Barr. Ihenda Idam, the legal representative of the community, also defended the legitimacy of the Caretaker Committee and the traditional ruler, citing court judgments that upheld the dissolution of the former Town Union leadership led by Obi Chukwunonso. He explained that the Enugu State Government lawfully dissolved the former leadership and constituted the Caretaker Committee led by Hon. Okuwudili Joseph, a decision later upheld by the High Court of Enugu State. “The court clearly held that the Enugu State Government acted rightly when it dissolved the former Town Union leadership led by Obi Chukwunonso and also acted rightly in setting up the Caretaker Committee led by Hon. Okuwudili Joseph,” Barr. Idam said. He noted that the court also restrained the dissolved executives from parading themselves as leaders or interfering with the activities of the Caretaker Committee. “The court restrained them from acting, parading themselves, or interfering with the duties of the Caretaker Committee. So those carrying placards today were already lawfully dissolved by government and restrained by the court,” he stated. On the issue of arrests and those declared wanted, Barr. Idam clarified that law enforcement agencies acted based on criminal complaints and due legal process, not at the instance of the traditional ruler. “The bench warrant arose after some persons were charged by the police for crimes they allegedly committed. The court before whom they were charged deemed it fit, in the interest of justice, to remand those persons. That is what gave rise to the order after they failed repeatedly to appear before the court,” he explained. He dismissed claims that such arrests amounted to persecution of innocent community members. “So, that is what they now term as illegal arrest of their brothers and sisters? If anybody was illegally arrested, the law is very clear. You file for a fundamental rights application to enforce your rights,” he said. “If your right to liberty was infringed in any manner, even for a second, you have the liberty to approach the court and seek judicial remedy by way of fundamental rights enforcement. Nobody should twist lawful prosecution into political persecution.” Barr. Idam further criticized attempts by the Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs to restore the dissolved leadership despite existing court orders, describing the move as unlawful and malicious. “The Ministry acted as if it was an appellate court by reversing the High Court judgment and attempting to restore the dissolved leadership. We challenged that in court and obtained fresh orders restraining the Ministry from taking any further action,” he said. He maintained that Igwe Christopher Ikenga Nyia remains committed to peace and lawful leadership in the community. “The Igwe is not against anybody. He has always preached peace. But in a democracy governed by the rule of law, nobody can place themselves above the law,” he added. https://journalist101.com/2026/04/21/obeagu-ugwuaji-protest-sponsored-igwe-not-hunting-anyone-caretaker-chairman/

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old suspect, identified as Ibeabuchi Ifeanyi Collins, and recovered a stolen tricycle shortly after it was allegedly stolen in Trans-Ekulu, Enugu. The Command disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday, April 20, 2026, by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe. According to the statement, operatives attached to the Trans-Ekulu Division arrested the suspect on April 18, 2026, at about 10:00 a.m., following a report by the custodian of the tricycle that the vehicle had gone missing. The complainant reportedly told the police that he discovered the tricycle missing around 6:00 a.m. after parking it in front of his residence in Trans-Ekulu. “Upon receipt of the report, the operatives were swiftly mobilised, and the information was circulated through the Command’s control room, leading to the recovery of the tricycle along Nike Road, Abakpa-Nike, Enugu, within hours of the incident,” the statement said. Police said the suspect was apprehended with the stolen tricycle in his possession. During interrogation, Collins reportedly confessed to the crime and blamed his action on hardship. “The suspect has confessed to the crime and attributed his action to hardship. He will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations,” the statement added. Commending the officers for their swift response, the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, praised the оперативes for ensuring the suspect was arrested and the stolen property recovered within hours. He also urged vehicle owners to adopt basic security measures to protect their property, while reaffirming the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state. “The Commissioner of Police commended the operatives for their prompt response, which led to the arrest and recovery. He reiterated his call on vehicle owners to adopt basic security measures to safeguard their property and reaffirmed the Command’s unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property,” the statement noted. https://journalist101.com/2026/04/20/police-arrest-suspect-recover-stolen-tricycle-hours-after-theft-in-enugu/

The Citizens Alliance for Transparent Leadership (CATL) has launched a strong rebuttal against former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, accusing him of attempting to rewrite history and unfairly diminish the legacy of former President Goodluck Jonathan. The group’s reaction followed a statement by Atiku, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Wednesday, in which he described Jonathan’s presidency as a “product of inexperience” and said his 2015 electoral defeat was largely a result of that inexperience. In a statement jointly signed by its Convener, Dr. Musa Ibrahim, and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Oghenekaro Samuel, CATL described the claim as “not just wrong, but mischievous.” “Dr. Jonathan rose through every constitutional rung of leadership—Deputy Governor, Governor, Vice-President, and Acting President during a critical national period. To dismiss that trajectory as ‘inexperience’ is either a willful distortion of facts or a troubling misunderstanding of governance itself,” the group stated. The organisation questioned the basis of Atiku’s criticism, arguing that while Jonathan’s competence was tested in office, Atiku’s presidential experience remains largely defined by repeated ambition. “It is remarkable that someone whose ‘experience’ is largely defined by repeated ambition now seeks to diminish the record of a leader whose competence was tested in office, under pressure, and in full public view,” the statement added. Defending Jonathan’s administration, CATL pointed to major economic and structural reforms carried out during his tenure, insisting that Nigeria witnessed measurable progress under his leadership. “Under Dr. Jonathan, Nigeria did not drift—it advanced. The economy was rebased to become Africa’s largest, the power sector was unbundled, agricultural corruption networks were dismantled, and long-abandoned rail and road infrastructure were revived. These are verifiable milestones, not opinions,” the group said. The organisation also highlighted Jonathan’s decision to concede defeat in the 2015 presidential election, describing it as one of the most significant democratic acts in Nigeria’s political history. “When faced with the choice between personal power and national peace, Dr. Jonathan chose Nigeria. His peaceful concession remains one of the most consequential acts of democratic leadership on the continent,” it noted. Describing Atiku’s remarks as an attempt to distort a period Nigerians personally witnessed, CATL said the former president’s record cannot be casually dismissed. “To now reduce that legacy to ‘inexperience’ is not just ironic—it is an attempt to gaslight a nation that lived through and benefited from those years,” the statement read. The group maintained that leadership should be assessed based on outcomes and national impact rather than political rhetoric. “If experience is the argument, then the distinction is clear: one man has a record that can be scrutinised; the other has a résumé of repeated attempts,” it said. CATL concluded that Jonathan’s legacy remains firmly rooted in policy achievements, economic reforms, and democratic stability. “Dr. Jonathan’s record is written in results and national impact. No amount of political revisionism can erase it,” the group stated. https://journalist101.com/2026/04/17/group-faults-atikus-inexperience-remark-defends-jonathans-legacy/

SMobile Nigeria Limited, under the leadership of CEO Dr. Kingsley Adonu, has become a trailblazer in Nigeria’s telecommunications industry, combining innovation, strategic growth, and a strong commitment to youth development. The company, recently recognized with the Icon of Entrepreneurship Award by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Enugu State Council, has distinguished itself as a major partner of MTN Nigeria, particularly in the Southeast region. A Brand Built on Innovation and Strategy Dr. Adonu explained that SMobile’s success is rooted in strategic innovation and customer engagement. “In a business where many players offer the same services, standing out requires doing things differently,” he said. In 2024, SMobile ranked first in Nigeria for MTN product distribution, a feat attributed to its proactive approach to customer outreach. Rather than waiting for clients to approach them, SMobile actively connects with users—even reaching out digitally to ensure consistent engagement and repeat patronage. With Nigeria’s over 270 million population and MTN boasting more than 90 million active users, SMobile manages at least 10% of these active users, handling significant sales volumes and market influence in the telecom sector. The company has also been a pioneer in tech-driven solutions. In 2020, SMobile introduced the first browser-based app for printing data, transforming customer interaction with telecom services. By 2023, the firm had expanded its operations across the Southeast, establishing itself as a leading, customer-focused telecom brand. Empowering Youth Through Technology and Skills Beyond telecom operations, SMobile has positioned itself as a youth empowerment hub. The S-Mobile Technological Institute, founded by Dr. Adonu, is designed to equip young people with digital skills including software and hardware development, cybersecurity, mobile and web applications, AI, and robotics. “The world is rapidly digitalizing, and we must prepare our youth to succeed in this environment,” Dr. Adonu said. “We train them to use their knowledge productively, creating applications and innovations rather than engaging in illegal activities.” Officially opened in September 2025 after registration and approval by the Attorney General of the Federation, the institute offers both online and physical classes, attracting students from Nigeria and abroad. Local residents benefit from a one-month free training program, ensuring that Enugu youth are not left behind in the digital revolution. Dr. Kingsley Adonu Students are given hands-on opportunities to develop real-world applications, with SMobile assisting them to deploy and manage their projects. “We help our students move from being liabilities to assets in the digital economy,” Dr. Adonu explained. Challenges in the Telecom and Youth Development Space Despite its success, SMobile faces challenges in awareness, infrastructure, and security. Dr. Adonu noted that many locals have yet to grasp the opportunities of digital businesses, often relying on physical goods or traditional business models. Additionally, vandalization of telecom equipment and poor infrastructure continue to pose significant hurdles. “Telecom requires digital understanding, but many still operate in old paradigms,” Dr. Adonu said. “Our work involves not only providing services but also educating communities on embracing digital tools.” Nonetheless, SMobile’s resilience, combined with strategic planning and community engagement, has solidified its reputation as a reliable, innovative, and socially responsible brand. Looking Ahead: A Vision for Growth and Social Impact As SMobile continues to expand its influence, Dr. Adonu envisions greater outreach, more youth programs, and expanded tech solutions across the region. “Our aim is to build a business that not only succeeds commercially but also uplifts communities and empowers the next generation of tech-savvy entrepreneurs,” he said. From innovative telecom solutions to cutting-edge youth empowerment initiatives, SMobile stands as a model of how entrepreneurship, technology, and social responsibility can drive meaningful impact in Nigeria’s Southeast region. https://journalist101.com/2026/02/27/smobile-transforming-telecom-and-youth-empowerment-in-southeast-nigeria/

The CEO of SMobile Nigeria Limited, Dr. Kingsley Adonu was formally presented with the prestigious “Icon of Entrepreneurship Award” by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State Council, on Tuesday, 24th February 2026. The award, originally conferred during the 2025 Press Week, celebrates outstanding innovation and achievement in entrepreneurship. Speaking to journalists after the ceremony, the CEO expressed heartfelt gratitude. “I’m very, very happy for this award. It’s a privilege. I don’t take this recognition for granted. I dedicate it to God and hope it paves the way for more achievements in the future,” he said. Highlighting SMobile Nigeria Limited’s influence in the telecommunications sector, the CEO detailed how the company empowers youths while growing the business. “I’m a major partner and distributor of MTN Nigeria,” he said. “Through SMobile NetZone Limited, we manage airtime, data, and other MTN products. Our goal is to not only grow the business but also empower young people through our S-Mobile Technological Institute.” The institute equips youths with practical digital skills, including cybersecurity, software and hardware development, and application building, offering constructive alternatives to criminal activities. “Instead of engaging in criminal activities, young people can channel their skills into productive ventures,” he added. On SMobile’s edge in Nigeria’s telecom sector, he stated: “In 2024, SMobile ranked first in Nigeria for distributing MTN products. We don’t wait for customers to come to us—we reach out to them. We manage over 10% of M10’s active users in Nigeria, and that’s the impact of our proactive approach.” He also highlighted the company’s pioneering digital solutions, such as the app enabling customers to print data directly from a browser, and its expansion across the Southeast in 2023. Youth Empowerment at the Core The CEO emphasized the institute’s mission: “Empowerment is not only about giving opportunities; it’s also fulfilling what God directs us to do. Through our Tech Institute, we teach cybersecurity, advanced AI, and software development to help young people succeed without engaging in illegal activities.” The S-Mobile Tech Institute, officially registered in September 2024 and launched in September 2025, offers online and in-person classes. Local residents benefit from one month of free training, while students develop practical applications and digital solutions that can generate income. “Our approach transforms learners from liabilities to assets,” he said. Acknowledging the difficulties in the sector, he noted: “Many people still do not understand the digital business model. Opportunities exist, but locals often fail to seize them. SMobile is currently the only Enugu-based direct MTN distributor. Competition is fierce, and infrastructural issues, including vandalism of telecom equipment, remain significant challenges.” Despite these hurdles, SMobile continues to grow through strategic planning, innovation, and customer commitment. “Telecommunication technology is creating jobs, and we are determined to empower more youths. With the right strategy, dedication, and digital solutions, we can expand further and continue contributing to the socioeconomic development of the Southeast,” he said. This award not only recognises entrepreneurial excellence but also highlights a model of business-led youth empowerment in Nigeria. https://journalist101.com/2026/02/26/smobile-ceo-receives-icon-of-entrepreneurship-award-champions-youth-empowerment/

It was a moment of pride and celebration on Friday, 20 February 2026, at the FCID Annex, Enugu, as eleven police inspectors were formally promoted to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in a colourful decoration ceremony. The event, marked by cheers and ceremonial decorum, is a hallmark of the Nigeria Police Force’s continued commitment to rewarding diligence, professionalism and years of dedicated service. Addressing the newly promoted officers, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), FCID Annex Enugu, AIG Chris Chukwudi Ariekpere, congratulated them on what he described as a “well-deserved elevation” and reminded them that promotion comes with greater responsibility and higher expectations. He urged the officers to justify the confidence reposed in them by the Force and the nation, stressing that the new rank demands discipline, integrity, and exemplary leadership. According to him, they must remain committed to upholding the rule of law, protecting lives and property, and conducting investigations with diligence and fairness. The AIG further charged them to see their elevation not merely as a reward, but as a call to deeper service, professionalism and accountability. Among those decorated were ASP Friday Usman, ASP Chinyere Chime, ASP Ekwelogwu Ezenwugbe of the Administrative Section, and eight other officers. The Enugu State Government has shut down the operations of KC Gaming Networks, operators of the Bet9ja brand, following alleged persistent violations of the Enugu State Gaming and Lottery Law. The enforcement action, which led to the sealing of the company’s head office in Enugu on February 10, 2026, was carried out by the Enugu State Gaming and Lotto Commission, acting on a court order issued by the High Court of Enugu State. Speaking to journalists after the exercise, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Prince Arinze Arum, said the shutdown was the culmination of repeated efforts by the state to secure compliance from the operator. “We are here to enforce compliance with the Enugu State Gaming and Lottery Law. Over time, we have had several communications with KC Gaming Networks concerning their infractions and regulatory breaches,” Arum said. According to him, the company ignored multiple warnings, administrative notices, and entreaties from the commission, particularly on issues relating to licence revalidation, outstanding fees, and other statutory obligations. “We sent multiple warnings and administrative notifications, but they neglected every single communication and all the entreaties we made, particularly those relating to their financial responsibilities to the state and other regulatory guidelines which they refused to comply with,” he said. Arum explained that the enforcement action marked a total shutdown of Bet9ja’s operations in the state, noting that the commission would move against all its outlets across Enugu. “Today, we are here to enforce that compliance. That is why we are shutting down the operations of KC Gaming, the owners of the Bet9ja brand. This action commenced at their Enugu office, and it is a total shutdown. We will also move around the state to shut down all their outlets,” he said. He stressed that the government was committed to ensuring strict compliance with the law, regardless of the size or influence of any operator. “We are serious about compliance and about operators playing by the rules. There is no operator or company above the law. If you break the law, you must face the consequences,” Arum stated. The Executive Secretary added that the commission had exhausted all administrative remedies before resorting to enforcement. “There has been a series of deliberate neglect of the commission’s instructions and directives, all based on the law and existing regulations. For example, we asked them to revalidate their licence, and they ignored it. We issued demand notices for outstanding fees owed to the state, and those were also neglected,” he said. Addressing claims of excessive charges, Arum maintained that all fees and levies imposed on gaming operators were lawful and transparent. “On the issue of fees and levies, no operator is billed arbitrarily. All fees, payments, and taxes are determined through proper assessment, in line with the law and regulations. No genuine operator will claim that the state government imposes arbitrary or unreasonable charges,” he said. He noted that the government’s objective was to build a well-regulated gaming industry that protects players and the wider public. “Whether an operator is big or small, any violation of the law or regulations will attract consequences and penalties. We insist on total compliance,” Arum said, adding that compliant operators would continue to enjoy the support and collaboration of the state government. “All actions taken have been in strict accordance with the law. After multiple warnings and communications, the law provides clear steps, all of which we followed,” he added. The shutdown followed an ex-parte order granted by the High Court of Enugu State, presided over by Justice H.O. Eya, in Suit No. 6/54/2025 between the Enugu State Gaming and Lottery Commission and KC Gaming Networks. In the order dated February 3, 2026, the court authorised the commission “to seal, distrain upon, lock up and restrict access to the Respondent’s gaming business premises situate within Enugu State for failure to remit duly demanded gross gaming revenue, pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice already filed in court.” The Enugu State Government said it would continue to enforce compliance across the gaming sector, warning that allowing regulatory breaches to go unchecked would send the wrong signal to other operators. https://journalist101.com/2026/02/10/breaking-enugu-govt-shuts-down-bet9ja-operations/

Leaders, stakeholders and party faithful from Enugu East Senatorial District on Sunday converged in Enugu to formally consolidate the emerging political coalition under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), sealing what party leaders described as a decisive unity pact ahead of future electoral contests. Chairman of the stakeholders’ meeting and National Assistant Secretary of the ADC, Hon. Morris Nnaemeziedeh, said the gathering was convened to harmonise party structures across the zone and ensure that sacrifices made by the party’s national leadership were reflected at the state and grassroots levels. According to him, the meeting followed earlier consultations by party leaders which resulted in the zoning of eight strategic positions to Enugu East Senatorial District. He explained that the objective of the meeting was to equitably distribute the positions among the six local government areas in the zone and mandate them to nominate credible and qualified candidates to fill the allotted slots. “Today’s meeting is a unification of the coalition in Enugu East Senatorial Zone,” Hon. Nnaemeziedeh said. “In the meeting today, we had members of PDP, APC, ADC and mainly the Labour Party. “Today, we have zoned the positions meant for Enugu East to all the coalescing political parties,” he added, noting that the ADC leadership in Enugu State is united and that similar zonal meetings have already taken place in the other two senatorial districts. A stakeholder from Isi-Uzo Local Government Area who defected from the Labour Party, Prof. Chris Onah, described the coalition’s momentum as unprecedented, predicting that the political gains recorded in the 2023 general election would pale in comparison to what lies ahead. “The feat achieved by the Labour Party in the 2023 general election will be a child’s play compared to what is coming in 2027,” Prof. Onah said. He explained that his political alignment remains anchored on values and performance, stressing, “We’re following Peter Obi because of his proven track record when he was the governor of Anambra State.” He added that Nigeria has drifted significantly and that citizens’ voting rights must be defended, describing participation in the democratic process as “non-negotiable.” Another stakeholder, Prof. Silk Ugwuogbu, said the unity achieved within the ADC coalition marked a defining moment in the country’s political evolution. “2027 is a date that we have with history,” he said. “We believe that a new Nigeria is possible because the person we’re following has three things—character, competence and capacity. ADC is a moving train and we’re going to take over power in 2027.” He welcomed members of other political parties who joined the coalition, reminding them that everyone now shares responsibility for the task ahead. “We all have a stake in making sure that 2027 is a reality. If you’re tired of the state of our economy and public institutions, we need to join ADC and change the narrative,” he said. Former Chairman of the Labour Party in Enugu South and now an ADC stakeholder, Hon. Chinwuba Ngwu, said the meeting effectively ended internal fragmentation within the coalition. “Today, it has dawned on us that we’re now one, and everybody has come to agree that we’re now in the ADC and will work for the party,” he said. Speaking on the outlook for the next general election, Hon. Ngwu argued that prevailing socio-economic realities would shape voters’ decisions. “The next election will be determined by the hunger in the land, and we’re hopeful that if Obi emerges as the presidential candidate of the ADC, our job is almost done,” he said. “If the ADC gives the presidential ticket to Obi, the election will be won before noon.” The meeting was attended by stakeholders from Enugu North, Enugu East and Enugu South Local Government Areas, as well as Nkanu East, Nkanu West and Isi-Uzo, all of whom resolved to work in unity under the ADC platform. https://journalist101.com/2026/01/25/adc-consolidates-enugu-east-district-as-coalition-leaders-seal-unity-pact/

The Quantus Medical Foundation- a healthcare nonprofit organisation, based in the United States of America, has declared that no emergency patient should ever be rejected in Nigeria, insisting that access to urgent medical care is both a moral duty and a legal obligation under Nigerian law. The declaration was made on Monday, January 19, 2026, during a high-level healthcare engagement held at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu, under the Foundation’s flagship We Care Nigeria Initiative. The engagement brought together UNTH executive leadership, designated WeCare Change Ambassadors, doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, and porters for structured discussions and hands-on training aimed at improving how care is delivered, particularly in emergency settings. The UNTH engagement is a pilot program, designed to develop and refine a much needed hospital culture-change and emergency care strengthening model that Quantus Medical Foundation plans to replicate across hospitals nationwide. Speaking at the event, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Quantus Medical Foundation and Quantus Medical, Dr. Nnenna Ihekoromadu, said Nigeria’s healthcare challenges go beyond infrastructure and equipment, stressing that a deep cultural change is urgently required within the system. “Nigeria’s healthcare system does not only need more hospitals or equipment; it needs a cultural reset,” Ihekoromadu said. “We must bring back compassionate care, accountability, respect for patients and staff, and excellence in service delivery. Without these, we fail the system and, most importantly, we fail patients.” She explained that the We Care Nigeria Initiative operates on a C-A-R-E framework, which stands for Compassionate care, Accountability, Respect for all, and Excellence, adding that these principles are central to rebuilding trust in public hospitals across the country. According to her, Quantus Medical Foundation has spent the past two months engaging UNTH through baseline hospital tours, leadership and change-management training, and a hospital-wide staff satisfaction survey designed to understand the real challenges facing healthcare workers. “We asked the people who do the work how they feel about their work, and we listened to their responses,” she said. “Based on our findings, we are recommending practical steps to change governance structures, workplace culture and accountability systems within the hospital.” Dr. Ihekoromadu revealed that one of the most critical outcomes of the engagement is a firm stance against the rejection of patients during emergencies, including labour cases and accident situations. “No patient should be turned away in an emergency — not during labour, not during accidents, not at any critical moment,” she declared. “The Nigerian law is clear on this, but many patients are not aware of their rights. Hospitals must also be empowered with the tools, training and systems they need so that rejection never happens.” She disclosed that Quantus Medical Foundation is supporting UNTH with digital infrastructure, including internet installation, electronic medical records, clock-in and clock-out systems, and improved emergency response coordination to ensure accountability and efficiency. Also speaking at the event, the Chief Medical Director of UNTH, Professor Obinna Onodugo, welcomed the partnership, describing it as timely and aligned with ongoing reforms within the hospital. “This partnership means a lot to us,” Onodugo said. “The focus is on restoring empathy, professionalism and patient-centred care. Infrastructure alone is not enough; healthcare workers must show basic human compassion to every patient.” He noted that UNTH already operates a policy of treating emergency patients without demanding immediate payment, adding that the hospital is working towards a zero-complaint culture. “We do not want any patient to say they came to UNTH and were turned back or treated badly,” he said. “Emergency patients are treated first, regardless of their ability to pay. Our goal is zero rejection and zero complaints.” Professor Onodugo, however, acknowledged existing systemic challenges, including staff fatigue, long commute times, and attitudinal issues, which he said the hospital is actively addressing through performance reviews, supervision and institutional reforms. Both parties agreed that sustainable change must come from within the system, supported by strong leadership, accountability and continuous training. Dr. Ihekoromadu reaffirmed Quantus Medical Foundation’s long-term commitment to UNTH, describing the teaching hospital as the Foundation’s flagship partner under the We Care Nigeria Initiative. “We are completely committed to helping UNTH change its culture and enhance the way medicine is practised,” she said. “Every Nigerian deserves dignity, compassion and quality care — especially in emergencies, where lives are on the line.” About Quantus Medical Foundation Quantus Medical Foundation is a healthcare nonprofit, based in the United States of America, dedicated to transforming healthcare delivery in Nigeria through culture change, workforce empowerment, emergency preparedness, patient safety, and system strengthening. Powell Homes and Shelters has reinforced its reputation as a people-focused real estate brand with the presentation of two brand-new cars to its top-performing realtors during its end-of-year celebration, held to reward excellence and dedication. The vehicles were formally handed over by the company’s brand ambassador and Nollywood legend, Patience Ozokwor, who commended the dedication, consistency and integrity displayed by the award recipients. Speaking at the event, Ozokwor described Powell Homes and Shelters as a dependable real estate brand that offers peace of mind and genuine property ownership to investors. “You can depend on them without worry. Any property you buy from Powell Homes and Shelters belongs to you. Everything is sorted out. All the stress people usually face when acquiring land is completely taken care of,” she said. Fondly known as “Mama G,” the veteran actress noted that she associates only with brands that uphold trust and excellence, stressing that Powell Homes and Shelters has consistently delivered value to both investors and partners. “I don’t go to places where people are stressed. Powell Homes and Shelters has given me and everyone who has invested with them peace of mind,” she added. Also speaking, the Chief Executive Officer of Powell Homes and Shelters, Architect Onyekachi Emmanuel, said the company deliberately rewards excellence to motivate its realtor network and drive healthy competition. “The essence of this event is to motivate and encourage our hardworking realtors. Beyond commissions, we also reward them with valuable gift items such as cars, refrigerators, microwaves, washing machines and others. This has been our culture for the past two years,” he said. He explained that the 2025 edition of the reward programme was particularly remarkable because the performance benchmark for winning cars was raised, yet several realtors still met the criteria within a short period. “What stands out this year is that even though we increased the stake required to win car gifts, people still qualified. If we had maintained the previous performance benchmark, we would have given out more vehicles,” Emmanuel noted. According to him, the two cars presented at the event bring the total number of vehicles awarded by the company in 2025 to seven, alongside numerous other gift items including iPhones, generators, media kits and household appliances. Highlighting the company’s competitive edge, Emmanuel said Powell Homes and Shelters is driven by value delivery. “For every property you buy from us, you are guaranteed value. If you compare our properties side by side with others, you will see that we offer superior quality and value,” he said. The car winners, Mrs. Njideka Chinonso and Mrs. Eze Victoria Rose, who emerged as the highest-selling realtors, expressed gratitude to the management for recognising their efforts. Mrs. Chinonso described the gesture as a major motivation, saying it had strengthened her commitment to the brand. “This reward has motivated me to work even harder and stay loyal to Powell Homes and Shelters. It shows that dedication and performance are truly recognised,” she said. Mrs. Eze Victoria Rose also thanked the company for maintaining a transparent and rewarding system, noting that Powell Homes and Shelters values hard work. “This recognition means a lot to me. It proves that if you put in the work, the company will reward you accordingly,” she said. https://journalist101.com/2025/12/21/powell-homes-rewards-top-realtors-with-cars-as-patience-ozokwor-hands-over-vehicles/

Five years after a High Court in Abia State sentenced his only son to death over allegations of phone theft, Mr. Mbaonu O. Mbaonu has renewed a desperate appeal for help, insisting that the conviction was a grave miscarriage of justice. In 2020 according to a court judgment sharedby PUO, a High Court sitting in the Igbere Judicial Division of Abia State sentenced Mr. Obadiah Mbaonu to death after finding him guilty of armed robbery involving mobile phones. The judgment was delivered by Justice Agwu Umah Kalu, who held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. Speaking recently from his home in Ibinaukwu, Igbere, in Bende Local Government Area, the grieving father appealed to the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, to intervene and review the case, stressing that his son was innocent and wrongly convicted. “My son is innocent; he was framed up,” Mr. Mbaonu said, fighting back tears as he pleaded for mercy and justice for the only child he has. Court documents obtained by Promise Uzoma Okoro show that the case, Charge No. HIG/1C/2017, stemmed from the arrest of Obadiah Mbaonu on January 1, 2017, when he was about 20 years old, and his subsequent arraignment later that year. The prosecution alleged that on January 1, 2017, at Igbere, the defendant robbed Engineer Kalu I. Kalu of a Nokia Lumia phone valued at ₦120,000 and a Huawei MT7-TL10 phone valued at $600. It was alleged that the robbery was carried out while the defendant was armed. Mbaonu pleaded not guilty to the charge on October 12, 2017. During the trial, the prosecution called five witnesses and tendered four exhibits, including a Huawei phone allegedly recovered from the defendant. In his 2020 judgment, Justice Kalu noted the constraints of the law in pronouncing sentence, stating: “I wish I had the powers to pronounce another sentence on the convict other than death… The sentence of the court upon you is that you be hanged by the neck until you are dead.” After the judgment, Mbaonu was transferred from Afara Correctional Centre in Umuahia to the Enugu Correctional Facility. His family alleges that since the transfer, the case file has remained missing, further complicating efforts to pursue legal remedies. Five years on, the father says the pain has not eased. He continues to appeal to Governor Otti to exercise his constitutional powers to look into the matter, insisting that the conviction arose from a personal vendetta linked to a longstanding land dispute. “I am begging for help,” he said. “This is my only son. I believe the truth will come out if this case is properly reviewed.” https://journalist101.com/2025/12/13/father-cries-for-help-five-years-after-only-son-is-sentenced-to-death-for-phone-theft/

As the world marks International Civil Aviation Day, aviation expert and industry leader, Captain Evarest Nnaji, popularly known as Odengene, has offered a detailed and reassuring explanation of what air turbulence really means—cutting through widespread myths and passenger anxiety with clear, authoritative insights. As we mark International Civil Aviation Day, it is important to reinforce the fact that aviation remains the most reliable, effective, efficient and safest mode of transportation in the world. Air turbulence may feel uncomfortable, but it is a normal part of flight—one for which aircraft are designed, and pilots are expertly trained. Air Turbulence remains one of the most misunderstood aspects of air travel. For many passengers, any sudden movement in flight can trigger anxiety. Yet, within the aviation industry, Air turbulence is well-studied, well-managed, and—contrary to public perception—rarely a threat to the safety of an aircraft. What Causes Air turbulence? Air turbulence is caused by rough air pockets encountered during a flight. Rough air pockets are derived from air with poor molecules. When an air pocket contains rich air molecules, the sky is clear and devoid of clouds. Clouds form when atmospheric conditions in a section of the sky collect or attract interference components in the form of moisture, mist, fog, smog, steam, dew, condensation, convection, haze, vapour, etc. The introduction of any or more of these elements into the atmosphere reduces the molecules in the air and creates visible air pockets known as clouds. Clouds, when formed by the earlier mentioned interference components, then have poor air molecules which, in turn, will not be strong enough to warrant the smooth flow of rich air over an aircraft’s airfoils (wings), thereby causing turbulence. When clouds form, they contour into different shapes and structures, giving them divergent patterns. Different clouds are named after their shapes and strengths, such as Stratus, Stratocumulus, Cumulonimbus, Nimbostratus, Altostratus, Altocumulus, Cirrus, Cirrostratus etc. A more troublesome source of air turbulence in flight is thunderstorms. Thunderstorm is a weather system that includes lightning, thunder, heavy rain, strong winds, and sometimes hail. It can form from large towering cumulonimbus clouds, and can also form rapidly over adiabatic temperature change rate in rising unstable air. There are four main types of thunderstorms; light, moderate, severe and extreme thunderstorms. Severe and extreme thunderstorms appear scary and worrisome, but aircraft do not fly through them. Pilots and air traffic controllers avoid them using Radar, Weather reports and Satellite data. There is also the Clear Air Turbulence (CAT) that can form at any altitude, high or low. CAT has no visible pattern. Therefore, pilots can run into CAT without adequate preparation or forewarning, causing sudden jolting turbulence in flight. But the industry has developed a mechanism known as PIREP which enables the first pilot to encounter CAT, to make a certain immediate pattern of report, letting other aircraft in the route or region to prepare for it. Aircraft design capability: Modern aircraft are structurally designed to handle very well all forms of possible air turbulence. Each aircraft model’s wing-structure, at design stage, underwent a bench-test usually stronger than anything such aircraft can ever encounter in real bad weather flight conditions before certification by FAA and or EASA for commercial production and use. This certification is a without-which such model will never fly in America or European airspace, and by extension, the world over. So, your aircraft may shake, dip, rock and rattle in flight, but will never fall off the sky due to air turbulence. In addition, pilots are trained to navigate air turbulence safely. How do passengers handle air turbulence? Realistically the main danger passengers can encounter in air turbulence is the sudden jolts that can cause people to fall, or hit their heads on cabin consoles. Another danger can result in movement within the cabin which can move the center of gravity (CG) limit of the aircraft, depending on the size of aircraft and amount of movement. Such movements can affect pilots control input and judgment causing the aircraft not to respond the way the pilot had mastered it. But all this can be completely avoided by simply ensuring you are seated with your seatbelt fastened. So, stay calm, keep your seatbelt fastened, the aircraft is built to withstand it, is the rule of thumb. So next time your flight encounters turbulence or rough patch of air, remember: It may be turbulent, but it is not dangerous. Captain Nnaji is both FAA (USA) and NCAA (Nigeria) licensed pilot, and the Group Chairman of OAS Helicopters, a leading conglomerate in Nigeria’s oil and gas aviation sector, as well as an astute businessman and philanthropist. https://journalist101.com/2025/12/07/international-civil-aviation-day-captain-evarest-nnaji-demystifies-air-turbulence-assures-passengers-it-is-not-dangerous/

The Office of the Executive Chairman of Enugu East Local Government Area has strongly denounced false allegations claiming that his residence in Umuchigbo Nike Community was robbed and set ablaze by some indigenes of the community. The clarification comes amid heightened tension following the tragic killings of two community members on 29th and 30th October, 2025. In a statement issued by the Chairman’s office, it was emphasized: “The Executive Chairman was neither robbed nor was his house set ablaze, whether in Umuchigbo or anywhere else. He did not at any time make such complaint affecting his person, nor did he authorize the filing of any such charge, either directly or indirectly.” The statement signed signed by the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Hon. Onyedika Agbo also highlighted that the content and intent of the charges, particularly in Counts V, VII, and VIII, “are entirely inconsistent with his position, and the Chairman therefore completely dissociates himself from them.” The clarification stressed the importance of accurate reporting and calm, noting the community’s grief. “At a time when families and the entire community are grieving the tragic and senseless killing of our two brothers, it is essential that no misinformation, misrepresentation, or false attribution worsens tension or diverts attention from the pursuit of justice,” the statement read. The Executive Chairman reaffirmed his commitment to restoring peace and ensuring justice, outlining clear priorities: “Working with all relevant government and security agencies, as well as the people of Umuchigbo, to restore peace and stability in the community.” “Ensuring that those responsible for the murder of our brothers are diligently investigated, prosecuted, and brought to justice.” “Protecting the integrity of his office by taking all necessary legal steps against any false allegations or actions capable of violating his personal or official rights.” Reiterating his stance on fairness and responsibility, the statement noted: “The Chairman has never initiated nor supported any action targeted at innocent individuals, nor authorised any report that suggests such intent. His focus remains justice, peace, healing, and the overall wellbeing of the people.” The office concluded with an appeal for public discernment, urging: “The public, media, and all stakeholders are therefore urged to disregard any statements linking him to allegations he did not make.” The statement Agbo said underlines the Chairman’s dedication to peace, justice, and the wellbeing of Umuchigbo Nike, reinforcing that misinformation will not distract from the ongoing efforts to address the community’s grief and bring the perpetrators to justice. https://journalist101.com/2025/11/22/enugu-east-chairman-debunks-fabricated-robbery-arson-claims-amid-community-tragedy/

The Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Geoffrey Uche Nnaji, has resigned from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s cabinet, citing blackmail and political persecution over recent allegations of certificate forgery. His resignation, which took effect on Tuesday, was confirmed in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga. “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Geoffrey Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, following some allegations against him,” the statement said. Nnaji, who was appointed in August 2023, tendered his resignation in a letter addressed to the President, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve the nation. “I wish to sincerely thank Your Excellency for giving me the rare privilege to serve Nigeria at the federal level. However, in light of the malicious blackmail and political persecution I have faced in recent weeks, I have chosen to resign to allow the government to focus on its developmental agenda without distraction,” he stated. The development comes amid growing controversy over allegations that the former minister submitted forged academic credentials to the Senate during his ministerial screening. Reports had surfaced claiming discrepancies in his degree certificates and questions surrounding his academic background — allegations Nnaji consistently denied. In the wake of the scandal, political pressure reportedly mounted on him to step aside to enable a fair investigation and prevent further embarrassment to the administration. President Tinubu, while accepting his resignation, commended Nnaji for his service and wished him well in his future endeavours. “The President thanks him for his service and wishes him well in his future undertakings,” Onanuga added. Nnaji’s resignation marks the first ministerial exit from President Tinubu’s cabinet since its formation in August 2023, and it underscores the administration’s sensitivity to controversies that could undermine public confidence. https://journalist101.com/2025/10/07/why-i-resigned-as-minister-uche-nnaji/

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), on Thursday held a Stakeholders’ Sensitisation Forum for Healthcare Providers and Health Maintenance Organisations (HMOs) on Updates and Recent Changes in NHIA in Enugu. The event, organised by the Enugu Office of NHIA, brought together healthcare providers, HMOs, government officials, and enrollees to review progress and deepen understanding of ongoing reforms in the health insurance sector. Speaking at the forum, the Acting Zonal Coordinator of NHIA, Southeast, Mrs. Aniebo Chinyere Nwakego, said the meeting was necessary to update stakeholders on recent developments. “For two years, we have not communicated what we have been working on to our stakeholders. This is an opportunity to inform everyone about what we are doing, share the new regulations, and chart the way forward,” she explained. Mrs. Nwakego noted that enrolments were steadily increasing across the Southeast, particularly as some states had begun formal sector registration. “Enugu will soon flag off its enrolment, so the process is ongoing,” she added. She emphasised that the agency had taken steps to improve payments to hospitals and HMOs after concerns about low tariffs. “We have improved payments to our hospitals and HMOs. Having done that, we now expect results, which must come through the quality of care given to our patients,” she stated. The Enugu State Coordinator of NHIA, Dr. Ken Chukwuemeka Ogbu, said the forum was an opportunity to evaluate past performance and chart a better course. “I expect participants to be impressed with the changes in the health insurance ecosystem. We also want to assess our performance over the years, identify areas for improvement, and ensure better service delivery in the state,” he said. Dr. Ogbu disclosed that while only the NHIA scheme was currently operational in Enugu, the state’s health insurance agency would soon commence its formal sector programme. “My goal is to take health insurance in the state to unprecedented levels,” he added. The Executive Secretary of the Enugu State Agency for Universal Health Coverage, Dr. Edith Okolo, confirmed that Governor Peter Mbah would soon launch the formal sector programme. According to her, “His Excellency, Governor Peter Mbah, will declare his commitment to ensuring that civil servants in Enugu State benefit from health insurance, protecting them from the financial risks of healthcare.” She explained that enrollees would have access to the Basic Minimum Package of Health Services, which includes hospital admissions, surgeries, laboratory tests, and prescribed drugs. While the formal sector programme was about to commence, Dr. Okolo noted that informal sector enrolments were already ongoing, with individuals and sponsors paying for beneficiaries. On the side of healthcare providers, Dr. Okechukwu Okonkwo, Medical Director of Royal Hospital, described the engagement as “very informative.” He said, “NHIA has undergone a massive transformation, with many new initiatives and programmes. They have reviewed several policies, which is a welcome development for healthcare providers. We look forward to the full implementation.” From the perspective of HMOs, Mr. Agbo Edgar of Venus Medicare identified sensitisation as a key challenge. “Many enrollees don’t fully understand how the programme works. That’s why engagements like this are important — to sensitise them on how to access care from start to finish,” he said. Beneficiaries also shared their experiences. Mr. Chidi Unobuagha of the National Orientation Agency, Enugu, described the programme as largely successful. “It has been wonderful. The doctors are good, consultation and tests are free, and the services are satisfactory,” he said. However, he pointed out concerns about drug quality, saying, “The only challenge is with the drugs, as some are generic and seem substandard.” He nevertheless praised the NHIA for its responsiveness. “Desk officers are also very helpful — one even helped resolve a problem very quickly. Overall, the programme is working well, and I would recommend it to others,” he added. The forum ended with a renewed commitment from NHIA, HMOs, healthcare providers, and state authorities to strengthen collaboration and ensure better healthcare delivery across Enugu State. https://journalist101.com/2025/08/21/nhia-engages-stakeholders-in-enugu-unveils-updates-on-health-insurance-scheme/

Concern is growing across the Catholic community in Aba and beyond as disturbing signs point to the mental deterioration of Rev. Fr. Francis Anyanwu, a suspended priest of the Catholic Diocese of Aba, whose erratic social media behavior and outrageous accusations have sparked widespread alarm. Fr. Anyanwu, in a string of Facebook posts, has targeted respected Catholic clergy—accusing them of sexual immorality, rape, pedophilia, sorcery, and cultism—without a shred of evidence. Those he has named include Rev. Fr. Kelechi Anyanwu, Rev. Fr. Felix Onyeugba, Rev. Fr. Innocent Ezenwoke, Rev. Fr. Paul Nwokeleme, and even his own superior, Rev. Fr. Prof. John Egbulefu, a world-renowned theologian. Foreign figures, including the Catholic Bishop of Vitoria in Spain, Juan Carlos Elizalde, were not spared. These reckless allegations appear to be fueled not by facts but by delusions. When summoned by the Senate of Priests at St. Mary’s Parish, Abayi Ariaria, Fr. Francis Anyanwu openly declared, “The things I post on my Facebook page are revealed to me in my dreams.” That statement, made publicly and in the presence of multiple witnesses, has confirmed fears that Fr. Anyanwu is battling a serious mental health crisis. Fr. Anyanwu’s troubles reportedly began in Spain during a language study program. According to Church insiders, he started exhibiting strange behaviors and was suspected of suffering from a mental illness. Following consultations between his bishop in Nigeria and Church authorities in Spain, he was recalled. His reaction? A barrage of unsubstantiated online attacks on both bishops, accusing them of cultism and witchcraft. It didn’t stop there. After his suspension by the Bishop of Aba Diocese for defiance, public misconduct, and scandalous publications, Fr. Anyanwu escalated his online campaign—targeting key diocesan figures and accusing them of impregnating women, abusing minors, and more. He returned to Spain against Church instructions and continued his social media tirades, apparently using his platforms to take revenge for what he sees as mistreatment. But members of the Church and public observers are now calling for a different approach: compassion and medical care, not condemnation. “It's clear to any reasonable person that Fr. Francis Anyanwu is not well,” said one senior Catholic. “You don’t need to be a psychiatrist to know this man is mentally unstable. Instead of feeding the madness by giving him an audience, we should help him get treatment.” Rev. Fr. Raphael Ezeogu, Chancellor of the Nnewi Diocese, added valuable context: “Nowadays, it's apparently forming a zeitgeist to accuse Catholic priests of sexual impropriety. Such empty but malicious trends against priests tend to spread like wildfire.” Fr. Anyanwu’s case, however, appears less about deliberate malice and more about a deteriorating state of mind. The tragic part, many say, is that his illness is being played out on social media for all to see, rather than being addressed with the confidentiality and care it desperately requires. “It’s unfortunate and heartbreaking,” a concerned parishioner noted. “He needs a hospital, not a platform.” Church authorities urge the public to disregard Fr. Anyanwu’s publications and pray for his recovery. The Diocese of Aba has affirmed its commitment to protecting its clergy from slander while also expressing concern for the mental well-being of the troubled priest. In the face of this unfolding crisis, one truth stands out: Rev. Fr. Francis Anyanwu is sick. He needs medical help, not judgment. He needs prayers, not applause. https://journalist101.com/2025/07/31/rev-fr-francis-anyanwu-is-sick-he-needs-urgent-mental-and-medical-attention-not-an-audience/

It was a day of gratitude, prayers, and inspiration on Friday, July 25, 2025, as the Odengene Foundation officially handed over a 58 en-suite room hostel to Godfrey Okoye University at its permanent site in Ugwuomu, Emene Nike, Enugu State. The magnificent edifice, built and fully funded by Odengene Foundation, was dedicated by the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Calistus Onaga, who lauded the gesture as a remarkable act of selfless service. “This is a sacrifice worthy of emulation,” Bishop Onaga declared while blessing the building. “We pray that this hostel brings eternal joy to Captain Evarest Odengene in God’s kingdom, and that everyone—students and teachers—who passes through these rooms will be richly blessed.” The facility, with 58 en-suite rooms, now stands as one of the largest hostels at the university, aimed at easing accommodation challenges and enhancing learning conditions for students. “I Did This to Give Back to God and Society” – Capt. Nnaji Founder of the Odengene Foundation and CEO of Odengene Air Shuttle (OAS), Capt. Evarest Nnaji, popularly known as Odengene, said the hostel was one of his ways of giving back to society and thanking God for His countless blessings. “I believe that I shouldn’t do it to be known,” he told the gathering. “If I do this and get honoured, then I am no longer doing it for God but for myself. My joy is to touch lives quietly, to give back, and to support education in whatever way I can.” Capt. Nnaji urged the students to make good use of the facility by focusing on their studies. He further announced that his Foundation would continue to offer scholarships to deserving students in need. “This isn’t a one‑off project,” he assured. “Through the Foundation, we are ready to take up more projects in the school. We are here to help you achieve your goals in life.” He also commended the engineers and construction team for what he described as “a quality job delivered in record time.” A Legacy That Inspires – Vice Chancellor In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke, praised Capt. Nnaji for inspiring a new generation of givers through his quiet generosity. “These students have now realised that it’s possible to do charity,” he said. “They will always remember that while they were students, a man built a hostel for them. What is outstanding is that you do this without noise, even those on your scholarship scheme—people who had lost hope of acquiring a university education—are beneficiaries of your kindness.” The Vice Chancellor noted that the project would not only solve immediate accommodation challenges but also remain a lasting testament to the power of private support for education. A Model for Others As the ribbon was cut and prayers offered, the new hostel quickly became a symbol of what partnerships between individuals and educational institutions can achieve. Bishop Onaga’s blessing, Capt. Nnaji’s humility, and the management’s gratitude underscored one message: true philanthropy needs no fanfare, only impact. The 58 en-suite room hostel now stands ready to welcome students for the new academic session—an enduring gift from a man whose vision, according to many present, will inspire countless others to give back in their own ways. A long-standing and potentially violent land dispute between Isienu-Amagunze in Nkanu East Local Government Area and Ndiuno Akpugo in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State has been peacefully resolved by the Enugu State Boundary Committee. The conflict, which nearly escalated into a bloodbath on December 11, 2024, followed allegations by residents of Isienu-Amagunze that Chief Uche Nnaji, Nigeria’s Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, had encroached on their land under the pretext of executing a federal project. According to them, the project was a renewed attempt to take over farmland that had been unsuccessfully claimed four years earlier. Tensions heightened when bulldozers invaded over six hectares of cassava and yam plantations owned by local farmers in Isienu-Amagunze. However, swift intervention by the Enugu State Government prevented what could have been a deadly communal clash. Fulfilling its promise to resolve the matter, the State Boundary Committee released its findings on Thursday July 10, 2025, affirming the demarcation between the two communities. According to the committee’s report, “the boundary between both communities is the point demarcated by a seasonal stream known as the IYI - EZI stream bordering the Akpugo community and Isienu-Amagunze community,” which also serves as the current administrative boundary between Nkanu East and Nkanu West LGAs. The announcement was made at the Government House, Enugu, in the presence of representatives from the disputing communities—Ndiuno-Uwani Akpugo, Ndiagu-Uwani Akpugo, and Isienu-Amagunze—as well as key government officials. Among those present were the Commissioner for Chieftaincy, Local Government and Rural Development, Deacon Okey Ogbodo; representatives of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and the State Surveyor General; Secretary of the Committee, Barr. Solomon Ejim; and the Chairman of the State Traditional Rulers Council, HRM Ikechukwu Asadu (Igwe Ogadagidi). Reacting to the decision, Hon. Anthony Okey Mbah, who represents Nkanu East Constituency in the State House of Assembly, praised the verdict, stating it “aligns with the position of the Isienu-Amagunze community to the boundary committee as to where the true boundary is.” Hon. Mbah noted that the ruling contradicted the claim by the Akpugo community, which argued that the boundary should lie beyond the Nkanu East Local Government headquarters at the Atavu River. On behalf of the traditional ruler, town union executives, and other stakeholders of Isienu-Amagunze, Hon. Mbah expressed deep appreciation to Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for what he described as the “historic resolution” of a decades-long boundary conflict. He further emphasized that “the swift intervention of the state government had averted what could have resulted in a bloody communal conflict between the two neighbouring communities.” https://journalist101.com/2025/07/12/enugu-govt-averts-bloodshed-as-state-boundary-committee-settles-land-dispute-between-isienu-amagunze-akpugo-communities/

The Guild of Public Affairs Analysts of Nigeria (GPAAN), has lauded the infrastructural strides of the Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah-led administration in Enugu State, describing them as “visionary, bold, and transformational” following a comprehensive tour of key projects between June 16 and 18, 2025. Addressing a press conference in Enugu on June 21, GPAAN Enugu Chapter Chairman, Dr. Ambrose Igboke said the tour was conducted to independently verify and assess the scale and quality of ongoing development efforts. “What we have seen in the past three days is not just construction work. It is a deliberate, well-thought-out blueprint aimed at repositioning Enugu for global relevance,” Igboke declared. He emphasized that GPAAN’s role is not to praise but to hold government accountable. “We are not here as cheerleaders of government. Our job is to hold the government accountable, commend when due, and make recommendations where necessary. But it is important that we speak the truth: Enugu is undergoing a quiet revolution.” Highlighting the New Enugu City project, Dr. Igboke called it “one of the most ambitious and forward-looking projects in the Southeast,” noting its potential to create jobs, boost GDP, and drive economic transformation beyond mere urban development. The analysts visited the GTC-TVET vocational institute, NOTRA-Enugu Tractor Assembly Plant, Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, modern transport terminals, International Conference Center, Presidential Hotel, the Command and Control Center, among others. At GTC-TVET, Igboke said: “This is how you prepare a generation for global competition. From primary school to JSS3, children will learn skills in ICT, electronics, and hospitality. That’s a generational investment.” On the tractor assembly plant, he stated, “Agriculture is being redefined in Enugu. With 200 tractors already delivered and plans for 800 more, this is sustainable mechanised farming—crucial for food security and export.” GPAAN praised the expansion at Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, funded through internal revenue. “This is fiscal discipline in action,” Igboke said, commending the twin six-storey buildings, new ambulances, and modern triage units. The analysts described the Command and Control Centre as a model of smart security. “The AI-enabled thermal cameras and real-time vehicle tracking systems rival what you find in the most advanced cities. It’s no exaggeration to say Enugu is becoming Nigeria’s smart security capital after Lagos.” The International Conference Center and the Presidential Hotel also drew praise. “We saw workers on site and according to the project manager, they work 24 hours a day at the Presidential Hotel. The NBA conference coming in August will return this iconic hotel to its rightful place. Enugu will be ready.” On the international specialist hospital, Igboke remarked: “The oxygen plants, smart lifts, and the six-storey complex are designed to deliver care that would ordinarily require travel abroad.” Other highlights included the Enugu Asphalt Plant, a bio-fenced pilot farm in Akpawfu, and a newly built bridge in Nkanu East replacing a colonial-era structure. “This bridge, funded in partnership with the local government, is a model of what LGAs can do with vision and support,” Igboke said. He urged the state to intensify public awareness efforts. “These projects are too impactful to be hidden. The people need to know what their government is doing. This transparency will build trust and inspire civic engagement.” Concluding, Igboke stressed, “Governor Mbah is not just building roads and schools; he is building the future. Enugu is on a new trajectory—and what we’ve seen gives us hope that this transformation is real, intentional, and enduring.”

In a sweeping legislative move aimed at curbing crime and unregulated spiritual practices, the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has transmitted an Executive Bill to the Enugu State House of Assembly. The bill, titled "Maintenance of Internal Security, Vigilance and Order," seeks to combat illicit activities among native doctors, herbalists, and spiritualists, while also targeting ritual practices, illegal forest encampments, and property misuse for criminal operations. The bill proposes a ban on money rituals, commonly referred to as ‘okite’, and criminal bulletproof charms, known locally as ‘odeshi’. It also prohibits the unlawful occupation or use of forests and private properties for kidnapping, banditry, and other criminal purposes. According to Section 3 (1) of the bill: “Every person, who engages in the practice or rendering of spiritual services within the state, whether as a native doctor, herbalist, spiritualist, chief priest, diviner, seer, or by any other traditional or spiritual title or designation, shall be registered with the ministry, department or agency (MDA) of the state as may be designated by the Governor for that purpose.” Failure to register would attract a fine of not less than N1 million and not more than N5 million, or a two-year jail term, or both. Section 15 addresses ritual practices used to commit crimes or gain wealth supernaturally: “Any person who, under the guise of spiritual or traditional practice (including but not limited to the practices commonly referred to as ‘okite’, ‘ezenwanyi’, or any other mystical or ritual name/form) administers or causes to be administered any charm, substance, or object on or for another person, for the purpose of: (a) invincibility and other forms of protection to facilitate the commission of any criminal offence; or (b) acquiring wealth or benefits by supernatural means outside any lawful means of livelihood, commits an offence and is liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term of six (6) years or to a fine of not less than five million naira (N5,000,000), or both.” It further criminalizes false claims of supernatural powers, stating: “Any person, who falsely claims to possess supernatural powers or misleads the public into believing so, for the purpose of gaining reward, or influence (whether financially or otherwise) commits an offence and shall be liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term of three (3) years or to a fine of not less than three million naira (N3,000,000), or both." The bill shifts the burden of proof to the claimant during investigation: “The burden shall lie on such a person, during investigation, to provide reasonable proof of the purported supernatural abilities claimed.” Section 16 prescribes six years' imprisonment or a fine of N5 million—or both—for anyone who uses or permits the use of any religious place to facilitate crime, with such facilities to be sealed pending investigation. Section 17 imposes a stiff penalty: “Any person who performs, facilitates, demands, directs, or participates in any ritual or traditional practice involving the use of human parts, or who causes another person to do so, commits an offence and shall be liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term of twenty (20) years without the option of a fine.” The bill also targets those found in forests or illegal camps without lawful purpose. Section 13 states: “Any person found in a camp, bush, or forest within Enugu State without any reasonable or lawful cause, and under circumstances giving rise to reasonable suspicion of involvement in any criminal activity, shall be promptly handed over to the Nigeria Police Force or any competent security agency for proper investigation in accordance with the law.” Regarding property used for banditry or kidnapping, the bill warns: “Any person who owns, occupies, or has control over any land or building, whether located in a forest or elsewhere, and knowingly allows it to be used as a camp, hideout, or base for kidnapping, the unlawful detention of victims, the collection of ransom, or for any other activity connected to kidnapping or banditry, commits an offence and is liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term of twenty (20) years without the option of a fine.” Additionally, failure to report illegal land use or suspicious activities could result in a two-year jail sentence without the option of a fine. The bill mandates that: “Subject to the provisions of Section 3 of the Criminal Code (Second Amendment) Law 2016, any land, property, or structure used in contravention of Sections 7, 8, 9 and 10 of this Law shall be forfeited to the Government of Enugu State.” Proceeds of criminal activity—such as money, vehicles, and property—are also to be forfeited to the government unless claimed by a lawful owner. The legislation introduces additional control measures requiring private security outfits to register with the state and submit details of their operatives. Town union presidents-general must now file monthly security reports to local councils or designated state departments. Landlords, hotel operators, and estate associations are also required to obtain and transmit verifiable identification, contact details, and occupation of tenants or guests to authorities. Surveillance cameras must be installed in public areas of lodging facilities, with recordings made available to security agencies. Penalties for non-compliance include fines ranging from N500,000 for landlords to N1 million for hotel owners. https://journalist101.com/2025/06/04/breaking-enugu-govt-moves-to-criminalize-money-rituals-regulate-native-doctors-ezenwanyi-herbalists-in-landmark-security-bill/

Tension Rises in Enugu as Atakwu Akwuke Youths Allegedly Defy Supreme Court Ruling, Vandalize Property A fresh wave of tension has erupted between two neighbouring Enugu communities—Etiti Ngwo and Umugwuakum Atakwu Akwuke—following the violent demolition of a residential-commercial building in a disputed area of land already adjudicated in favour of Etiti Ngwo by the Supreme Court. In the recent attack, property worth millions of naira was destroyed by thugs allegedly sent by the people of Atakwu Akwuke. Speaking to newsmen about the attack, Chief Onoh MC, Legal Advisor to the Etiti Ngwo community, decried the incident as a “clear case of criminal trespass and malicious damage” by suspected youths from Atakwu Akwuke, who allegedly stormed the property of Mr. Uchenna Onoh on May 9, 2025, and razed it down—despite a standing Supreme Court judgment affirming Etiti Ngwo’s ownership of the land. “This case dates back to 1989 when both communities went to court over land known as Agu Ovolo, Isiama and Ebemi land. Though Etiti Ngwo initially lost at the High Court, the Court of Appeal overturned that ruling in 2015, and the Supreme Court upheld it,” Chief Onoh said. Chief Onoh traced the land dispute to as far back as 1989 when both communities took their grievances to court over land known as Agu Ovolo, Isiama and Ebemi land. While the High Court initially ruled in favour of Atakwu Akwuke, the decision was overturned by the Court of Appeal in 2015 and subsequently upheld by the Supreme Court. "Following the court rulings, Etiti Ngwo took possession of the land as ordered by the Enugu State High Court. The community then distributed parcels to adult males, including my client Mr. Uche Nna Onoh," said Chief Onoh. Despite this legal finality, youths from Atakwu Akwuke have allegedly continued to provoke tensions. According to Chief Onoh, "they have persistently incited individuals who purchased land from Atakwu Akwuke with defective titles, urging them to defy court orders. This has led to a series of violent acts, including arson, destruction of fences, and demolition of buildings belonging to Etiti Ngwo indigenes." "On multiple occasions, houses have been burned and properties destroyed. The latest attack was the most alarming. A group of armed youths invaded my client's property, pulled down the gates, removed all doors, riddled the roof with bullets, and damaged everything inside. This occurred just days after we appeared in court with one of the claimants from Atakwu Akwuke, who attempted to seek an injunction against our client," Chief Onoh explained. He added that the attack seemed coordinated and premeditated, coming shortly after the opposing party expressed displeasure in court over a preliminary objection filed by Etiti Ngwo's lawyers. "They threatened to take action, and just days later, they did. We have names of the individuals involved and trust that the law will soon catch up with them." The incident has sparked concerns within Etiti Ngwo, whose members are growing restless. "Our youths are angry, but we are urging them to remain calm and allow due process. This attack lasted over four hours, with gunshots heard throughout the night. Attempts to get the police to intervene were unsuccessful until the damage was done," said Chief Onoh. Adding complexity to the matter is the alleged involvement of the Enugu State Boundary Commission and the Enugu State Geographic Information Service (ENGIS). Chief Onoh cited a court document where one of the Atakwu Akwuke litigants claimed that they were directed by the Boundary Commission to approach ENGIS for land registration. "This is worrisome," said Chief Onoh. "Why is ENGIS registering lands in a legally resolved dispute area? The Boundary Commission has not released any white paper or report, yet they are allegedly directing registration. This creates confusion and undermines court verdicts." Etiti Ngwo has therefore made two formal demands: 1. The Boundary Commission must immediately release the outcome of its findings on the land dispute, which has been pending since September 2024. 2. ENGIS should suspend all land registration activities within the disputed area until a formal directive is issued by the Boundary Commission. Speaking on his ordeal, Mr. Uchenna Onoh, the owner of the destroyed property, described his plight as heartbreaking and financially ruinous. "I am a civil servant with no other property. I refused to sell the land to a man who claimed to be a reverend father. I wanted to build something for my children’s future. I started constructing seven lock-up shops with residential space above. The structure was demolished three times. The third time, I had finished the entire building with borrowed funds. They destroyed everything—the roof, plumbing, aluminium works, doors, and even tiles. They broke and scattered a whole trailer-load of tiles meant for the building." Mr. Onoh said he had reported to the police, community leaders, and his lawyer, and had engaged private security. "Still, they returned and ruined everything. Now I am in debt and trauma. I’m pleading with the government to step in and publish the boundary white paper to avert further escalation." BOUNDARY COMMISSION REACTS When contacted, the secretary of Enugu State Boundary Commission, Dr. Ejim, told our correspondent that though they are aware of the disputed boundary, the report of their findings is not yet out, and when it is ready, all the parties involved will be made aware of it. He also dismissed as totally false any claim by any of the parties that the report is in their favour, adding that only the Chairman of the Commission, who is the Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, will release the report, but it's not yet out. Dr. Ejim noted that the commission isn't aware of the renewed crisis in the area and assured of their commitment to entertain such a complaint if it's brought before them. Enugu State Geographic Information Service (ENGIS) Remains Silent. Efforts to get a reaction from ENGIS on the alleged registering of the same land for the people of Atakwu Akwuke proved abortive as they are yet to reply to a mail sent to the Managing Director of the Service. The situation remains tense, and community leaders warn that failure to act quickly could result in broader conflict. "This matter has reached a boiling point," Chief Onoh emphasised. "The government must intervene now to prevent a full-blown communal crisis." https://journalist101.com/2025/05/23/tension-rises-in-enugu-as-atakwu-akwuke-youths-allegedly-defy-supreme-court-ruling-vandalize-property/

…Family of deceased devastated, calls for justice Mr. Arinze Odo, a 24-year-old young man, is still reeling from the trauma of a horrific incident involving operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Enugu, which led to the death of his friend, Daniel Isiwu, and left him with a gunshot wound in the neck. The tragic event occurred on Saturday, May 17, 2025, as Arinze and his two friends, Johnpaul Echezonachukwu and Daniel Isiwu, returned to their base in Emene after shopping at the Ogbete main market. What started as a routine outing turned deadly around 6:30 p.m., near a military checkpoint manned by Air Force personnel along Old Emene Road. According to Johnpaul, who was driving their Mercedes Benz GLK, traffic had built up near the checkpoint. While deciding whether to wait or reroute via the express, a white Toyota Hilux van suddenly appeared at high speed and tried to double-cross their car. Panicked and unaware of who was in the vehicle, he attempted to move closer to the checkpoint, still over 200 meters away, for protection. But the van blocked them, forcing him to reverse. Then, a gunshot rang out. Narrating the ordeal, Arinze, who was in the front passenger seat, said: “All I noticed was that someone with a gun jumped out of the car, and then there was this loud gunshot. I shouted ‘Jesus!’ as I felt a sharp pain behind the back of my neck. I touched it and felt something hard and hot lodged in there. In panic, I felt around it and managed to get a pinching hold on it and pulled. It came out, and I saw it was a bullet. I was like, I am hit! I am hit by a bullet! Then I felt the rush of blood flowing down my back, soaking my dress. I passed out.” When he regained consciousness at the hospital, Arinze was devastated to learn that their 22-year-old friend, Daniel, who sat behind him, had died. The same bullet had torn through Daniel’s neck, ripped through the headrest, and lodged in the back of Arinze’s neck, narrowly missing his spine. Daniel Isiwu hailed from Ohodo in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State. He was an orphan and the elder of two siblings. Since 2012, he had been raised by his aunt, Mrs. Sabena Ojekoma, after the death of his father, Victor. He also cared for his younger sister, 15-year-old Rita Chidimma. When Journalist101 visited the family, they were visibly distraught and in mourning. Mrs. Ojekoma, who raised Daniel as her own son, cried out for justice: “The man who killed my son has not told us why he took his life at his prime. His father died young. Now we have lost him too. I have lost a son. The only offense Daniel and his friends committed was that they were young people in Nigeria driving a good car along the road. The world, Nigerians, please help me get justice for my son. That is all I ask for.” Chidimma, Daniel’s younger sister and now the only surviving child of their late parents, wept as she tried to express her pain: “Honestly, I don’t know. This is too much. Sir, the pain is just too much. All his plans and promises to me have gone like that. He didn’t joke with me as his only sister and sibling. I can’t describe who he was and what he meant to me. Sir, this pain is too much. At least our father was sick before he died. What did my brother do to the man who killed him? I am sure he has a son or at least a brother, too. How would he be feeling if it were his son or brother that someone shot dead like that?” Eyewitnesses said that after the shooting, the NDLEA officers searched the vehicle and found nothing incriminating before fleeing the scene. The police later arrived and, with assistance from passersby, rushed Arinze to the hospital and took Daniel’s body to the mortuary. When contacted, the spokesperson of NDLEA, Enugu Command, Mrs. Calista Mmeka said they're investigating the matter to ascertain if their officers were involved in the shooting. However, a police source told our correspondent that the NDLEA officers are currently detained at the Enugu State Police Criminal Investigation Department, where investigations are ongoing. The officer who allegedly pulled the trigger has also been singled out among them. The grieving family now waits anxiously for justice. But will it come, or will this tragedy join the list of unresolved cases of extrajudicial killings in Nigeria? Only time will tell.
