Nairaland GeneralEnugu Gov’t Flags Off Zero Rabies Campaign by klintoski(op): 8:45pm On Dec 15, 2024
The government of Enugu State has launched the Zero Rabies Campaign, urging dog owners to ensure their pets are promptly vaccinated to prevent the spread of this deadly disease.

At the event, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-industrialisation, Patrick Ubru, emphasised that rabies is one of the most preventable yet devastating diseases impacting both human and animal health.

Ubru highlighted that the state government cannot permit the ongoing transmission of rabies. He explained that this campaign, organised in collaboration with the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), is a key initiative by Governor Peter Mbah's administration to safeguard the health and well-being of both people and animals.

He assured attendees that the government would provide the necessary resources to support the campaign. He also called on individuals, families, and communities to ensure their dogs are vaccinated and urged community leaders, religious organisations, and educators to raise awareness about the dangers of rabies to halt its spread in Enugu State.

“The 'Zero Rabies in Enugu' campaign is not merely an initiative; it is a rallying cry to all stakeholders in our society.

“Through this campaign, the Enugu State Government, in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Industrialization and the NVMA, is taking significant steps to ensure the health and safety of our citizens and animals.

“This initiative aligns with the global objective of eradicating human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030.

“I am particularly heartened by the collaborative approach of this initiative. The involvement of government agencies, veterinary professionals, community leaders, and international partners highlights the importance of a united front in addressing public health challenges.

“I urge pet owners to vaccinate their animals and to motivate others to do the same. Community leaders, religious organisations, and educators need to help disseminate information about the dangers of rabies and prevention strategies,” Mbah stated.

Furthermore, Chidiebere Iloh, the State NVMA chairman, noted that the Zero Rabies campaign supports the global strategy aimed at achieving zero human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030—a vision that requires the collective effort of the government, professionals, and the community.

Iloh pointed out that rabies remains a global public health concern, with over 99 per cent of human deaths attributed to dog bites, predominantly in low- and middle-income countries like Nigeria.

He revealed that veterinarians in the state are ready to offer technical expertise in mass dog vaccination, both in urban areas and rural communities throughout Enugu State.

“The partnership between the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Industrialization and the NVMA demonstrates a shared commitment to safeguarding human and animal health in our state.

“By embracing the One Health approach, which integrates human, animal, and environmental health efforts, we are establishing a foundation for sustainable rabies prevention and control.

“The NVMA is proud to lead this initiative.

“However, the success of this campaign requires not only technical expertise but also the active participation of community leaders, pet owners, and all citizens of Enugu State,” Iloh concluded.

Nairaland General80-year-old Nath Nwosu Threatens To Kill  Journalist For Calling Him Over A Stor by klintoski(op): 11:44pm On Dec 04, 2024
An Imo-based journalist with The Statesman Newspapers, Jude Onyenedogha, has filed a petition with Commissioner of Police C.P. Aboki Danjuma, detailing threats to his life allegedly made by Nath Nwosu of Umuonyeali Ugo Mbieri in Mbaitolu LGA, along with his associates.

In recent years, there have been increasing efforts to suppress media and civic freedoms in Nigeria. The 2024 report by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) ranks Nigeria among the most perilous and challenging countries for journalists in West Africa.

In May, the National Cybercrime Centre of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF-NCCC) summoned Nurudeen Yahaya Akewushola, a reporter from the International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR), following his exposé revealing how previous police leaders exploited their positions for corrupt activities.

Additionally, Daniel Ojukwu, a journalist with The Foundation of Investigative Journalism (FIJ), was detained by police over allegations related to “cybercrime”.

The threats from Mr Nwosu emerged after Onyenedogha reached out to him for comment regarding allegations that Nwosu was inciting discord in his community by establishing a rival leadership against the legitimate community executive.

A recorded phone call obtained by this reporter reveals Mr Nwosu and his associates threatening to find the journalist and eliminate him, also hurling insults at him for making the call.

The petition submitted by Onyenedogha states: "I wish to bring to your attention the threats to my life by Nath Nwosu of Umuonyeali Ugo Mbieri, Mbaitolu LGA, and his associates, merely for attempting to carry out my professional duties.

"I have been informed that Nath Nwosu is causing unrest in his community by imposing a parallel executive on the duly elected leadership.

"In adherence to professional ethics, I reached out to him to hear his perspective for balanced reporting. Upon introducing myself and presenting the information I had, he interrupted me, resorting to insults and threats, warning me against contacting him again under the threat of violence. He subsequently passed the phone to one of his associates, who intensified the threats, declaring that if I were to call again, he would track me down and kill me, repeatedly asserting that I would be a dead man if I wasn't careful."

Onyenedogha noted that what he initially perceived as an idle threat escalated into a grave situation, with Nwosu’s hired associates stalking him online, and he began receiving unsettling phone calls that he had initially dismissed.

"However, I became increasingly alarmed upon learning that they had circulated my photograph and phone number among themselves in an effort to locate me.

"Due to these threats and the ongoing tracking of my movements, coupled with the current societal climate where human life is devalued, I've been living in constant fear. My movements are severely restricted, and I can no longer sleep soundly.

"While I trust in your ability to ensure justice in this matter, I wish to formally state that should anything untoward happen to me or any members of my family, Nath Nwosu, also known as Dee Nath, of Umuonyeali Ugo Mbieri, should be held accountable."

When contacted via telephone earlier this week, Mr Nwosu denied threatening the journalist.

He claimed to be an elderly man of 80 years who had just returned from America last month.

Nwosu asserted that the journalist had not identified himself and alleged that the reporter had simply called, questioning him about supposed conflicts in his village.

In response to this reporter's inquiries, ASP Henry Okoye, the police spokesperson in Imo State, confirmed receiving a petition from Onyenedogha and stated that the command is addressing the matter

Nairaland GeneralEnugu: Dewdrop Institute Graduates Students Trained On Professional Care Service by klintoski(op): 6:37am On Dec 04, 2024
The Dewdrop Institute (DDI) has graduated its latest cohort of students who have successfully completed an intensive training programme in Professional Care Service (PCS). This significant achievement is marked by the awarding of international certification from City & Guilds UK and Skills Development Council Canada, enabling graduates to meet global standards in care provision.

The graduation ceremony, held at the institute's state-of-the-art facility, was attended by esteemed dignitaries, industry professionals, and the families of graduates. The event highlighted the institute’s commitment to excellence in education and the delivery of high-quality care services.

The Executive Director of Dewdrop Institute, Mrs. Agatha Nnaji shared that the institute was established out of necessity, inspired by the gaps they identified while caring for the elderly through the Dewdrop Foundation.

"As we cared for elderly individuals, we realised the lack of professional caregivers—not merely nurses, but genuine caregivers. This led us to conclude that the most effective way to address this issue was to establish a certified programme that caregivers could pursue to enter this vital sector.

"We did a lot of research and found the City & Guilds International of UK that certifies health and caregivers, and they're based in the United Kingdom, and we had to go through a 2-year process of accreditation. We also went through the accreditation of the Nigerian Board of Technical Education and, eventually, the Skills Development Council of Canada. Those are the three organizations that certify our professional care training programme.

Mrs. Nnaji further emphasised the institute's mission to foster a sense of professionalism and pride among caregivers. "we want to ensure that people who are already caregivers and those that want to join, see that space as a profession they can be proud of and with a certification that's globally recognized, it's easier for them to come into the carrier part that we are developing for them.

"So you find people at different levels providing care but because they don't have a certification, they end up just remaining either as house helps and houseboys or basic nurses. But with this professional training and the certification, they can go places, work on their own, they can become entrepreneurs and they can provide that services at home, in hospitals or anywhere across the country or even abroad."

Mrs. Nnaji added that anyone seeking to enroll can do so by visiting their website; www.dewdropinstitute.com and following the application process or stop by any of their centers in Abuja, Lagos and Enugu, noting that they've also created a very flexible payment plan that will enable people pay as they can and complete the courses.

She also stated that they've "identified partners- serious and professional organizations in the medical space where our learners can go and do their internship. it is a very intense programme and we've inculcated our culture in Nigeria, how to take care of elderly people with respect and regard and give them a sense of belonging and love which will help all of us as we get older.

Earlier in her address, the Center Administrator, Dewdrop Organization Enugu, Mrs. Chinyere Moore-Ashimole said that over the past months, students have undergone rigorous training encompassing various aspects of professional care giving

Mrs. Moore-Ashimole told the graduating students that the ceremony "marks not just the end of your professional diploma training journey in PCS but the beginning of endless possibilities despite the challenges you may have faced while in pursuit of this PCS certificate. You have learned valuable lessons: theoretically and practically, the friendships you may have forged alongside may last a lifetime.

"You have learned to be compassionate, show empathy to personal need, patient, well-positioned, and ensuring proximity to those you would be entrusted to care for.

"You have created a tapestry of experiences that will enrich our society; with either or both of our City & Guilds UK and Skills Development Council Canada certification in your possession

"As you step into the next phase of your life with the wealth of knowledge you have acquired from Dewdrop PCS program, remember to stand in the dignity and integrity imbibed into you. Embrace your passion, take intelligent risks and never stop learning.

Some of the graduates, including Oguine Lilian, Edeh Victory Chioma, Eze Onyekachi, and Chukwuemerie Emmanuel Ekwo, expressed their satisfaction with the quality of training they received, stating that their careers have taken a promising new direction.

Nairaland GeneralLagos: Oworonshoki Oba Tussle; Any End In Sight? by klintoski(op): 3:30pm On Nov 25, 2024
Oworonshoki, a vibrant and bustling neighbourhood in Lagos, Nigeria, is a place of rich cultural significance and geographical beauty. Positioned along the northern shores of the Lagos Lagoon, it serves as a gateway between mainland Lagos and the Third Mainland Bridge—one of the longest bridges in Africa. This location not only gives Oworonshoki strategic importance but also imbues it with a unique charm shaped by its proximity to the lagoon's expansive waters. The Lagos Lagoon itself, a sprawling water body, contributes to Oworonshoki's identity. The shimmering expanse reflects both the dynamism of urban Lagos and the serene beauty of natural waterways.

From Oworonshoki, one can catch breathtaking views of the lagoon, especially at sunrise and sunset, when the skies blush in hues of gold and amber, mirrored by the calm waters. Historically, Oworonshoki has been a critical transport hub, linking mainland neighbourhoods to Lagos Island via water routes and road networks.

Its lagoon-side location facilitated trade and interaction, making it a melting pot of cultures, traditions, and industries.

Today, remnants of its maritime heritage persist, evident in the activities of fishermen who launch their canoes at dawn, carrying on a tradition that has spanned generations.

Beyond its geographical allure, Oworonshoki thrives as a community deeply rooted in Yoruba culture. Festivals, music, and art are integral to its identity, reflecting the resilience and creativity of its residents.

The interplay between urban development and the natural environment also highlights the neighbourhood's dual character: a place where modernity coexists with tradition and where the pulse of Lagos beats strong against the gentle rhythms of the lagoon.

Despite challenges such as urban congestion and environmental concerns, Oworonshoki remains a testament to Lagos's spirit—a city that never stops reinventing itself. Its position along the Lagos Lagoon makes it a constant reminder of the harmony that can exist between urban growth and nature, offering a slice of tranquillity amidst the city's ceaseless energy.

Oworonshoki is no doubt one of the most peaceful and beautiful terrains facing the seashore in Lagos State but since the death of the progenitor of Oloruntoyin Royal Family, His Royal Majesty, Oba Bashiru Oloruntoyin Saliu (Oloworo 1)

Peace, who used to be a bonafide citizen of the community, was forced into an untimely exile as a result of the kingship tussle among the children of the late Oba. Though one of the sons, Prince Babatunde Sali, was later crowned the Oba, peace still refused to return in the community as the kingship tussle continued to linger.

The reigning Oba and his main opponent are still in court, and each claims that he is the right person to ascend the throne of his fathers. However, quite recently, another vista was introduced into the lingering battle when some members of the royal family made a public disclaimer in the National Tribune Newspaper on 12th November 2024 claiming that they did not make a certain family resolution carrying their signatures and that the signatures contained therein were forged. The same people were even bold enough to call on the law enforcement agents to investigate the said document.

Our preliminary investigation has shown that the said document is the main exhibit relied upon by the reigning Oba or his allies as evidence that his family members nominated him according to the Yoruba custom and if this document is forged according to them, it might definitely affect the Oba’s chances in Court. Anyways, that is just a mere opinion for now but the Oba has to tackle this issue headlong seriously.

Interacting with some residents, they decried the adverse effects of the Oba tussle, traditionally, economically and even socially!

The feelers gotten from some of the family members who preferred anonymity is that right from the onset, the reigning Oba was never their choice but was allegedly imposed on them by the powers that be in the state and so they had no choice but to accept him. The question now is, assuming the claims on the said publication are true why should the Oba rely on such documents?

Politics‘Barking Dogs Never Bite’— Onoh Blasts Asari Dokubo by klintoski(op): 10:49pm On Oct 28, 2024
Former Campaign spokesman of President Bola Tinubu in the south east, Dr. Josef Onoh has told the former Niger Delta militant leader Asari Dokubu that the president isn't perturbed by his ranting, nor intrested in any discussion about a second term in office because it will form a distraction on the President's ongoing reforms.

Dokubu had accused President Tinubu of betrayal and neglect, threatening that henceforth the people of Niger Delta would form alliance with the north to scuttle Tinubu's second term possibility.

Onoh is his response to Dokubu told the former militant leader that the President is purely intrested and focused on stabilising the economy, food security and development of all sectors of the economy, maintaining that these heavy tasks are too deafening for his ears to hear the "popping noises of popcorns and soda water."

Onoh recalled that Asari Dokubo in his apology to his forefathers insinuated that his forefathers were not wrong in forming an alliance with northern Nigeria in the past, and as young men, they too will now start that same alliance because the President allegedly betrayed Dokubu.

But Onoh said, "May I remind Asari that such alliance his forefathers and Ijaws held with the north was commercial and Agricultural alliance structured more on business benefits and never political. Therefore any political alliance against President Tinubu ahead of 2027 will fail.

"The South East have continuously advocated for an Igbo President and won't support any other candidate against Tinubu come 2027 from any other region as such opposition candidate will still seek a second term in office at the detriment of Igbo presidency.

"The South West has produced two presidents and a vice president, the south South has produced a vice president and President, the north has produced two presidents and three vice presidents and after President Tinubu’s term in office, power will shift to the north and only President Tinubu can guarantee an Igbo vice president which will lay the foundation for an Igbo presidency.

"Even the north are aware of that political complexity, hence they won't make such polical mistake to deny President Tinubu a second term in office if he decides to seek for it."

Continuing, Onoh reminded Dokubu that, his ethnic nationality, the Ijaw population in Nigeria is about 15 million of which many are found as migrant fishermen in camps as far west as Sierra Leone, Ghana and as far east as Gabon.

"As of 2023 general elections, they accounted for around 6.9 percent of our country's 223 million people, hence they can't make any significant political impact with your intended political suicide alliance. Your current outburst and threat to form and alliance with the North against Tinubu come 2027 is coming from a man who doesn't believe he and the entire Ijaws are part of Nigeria; when you continously made reference points during your agitation for an independent Ijaw State by your defunct Niger Delta Volunteer Force that you led."

Onoh further recalled that Asari Dokubu argued that the Ijaw ethnic minority entered into treaties with the British to become British protectorates but not Nigeria, noting that Dokubu argued that there was no single extant document whatsoever where Ijaws consented to becoming Nigerians as their treaties with the British did not join them into nationhood or relationship with other parts of Nigeria. Rather, that the treaties established direct relationship between the British and the Ijaw nation.

"So I'm surprised at Dokubo Asari's outburst and threat to form alliance with the North to remove President Tinubu from power come 2027. He's now intrested in the political affairs of a country he never believed he is a part of. Clearly his outburst is purely self serving and of no political relevance. Even the then British empire neither anticipated an Ijaw uprising nor an Ijaw presidency aside from the president Jonathan's accidental presidency which the north still took back in 2015 with the help President Tinubu.

"Even the post-independence Nigeria, so to speak, nationalized all the nations that made up Nigeria. The post- independence political arrangement in Nigeria did not envisage much political power for the Ijaw ethnic minority and it still subsists in the Nigeria political space till date and all northern political elites are fully aware of it. Asari Dokubo's alliance is a match of political suicide for the ijaw people, hence he's matching alone."

Onoh again went back memory lane to refresh Dokubu that previous oppositions by both a section northern extraction and Niger Delta had opposed former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Mohammadu Bihari's second terms, respectively, but all failed. "So it will actually be a bad omen for President Tinubu’s second term in office if we have no threat from an Ijaw."

On Dokubo's profiling of Yorubas as betrayals that the Ijaws can't work with, Onoh told Dokubo that political existence is an arbitrary activity of human society, but that the mode of succession is a responsibility and changes in it are choices to make.

"The Ijaw nation has been arbitrarily incorporated into Nigeria political space. The choice and responsibility for change in the fortunes of the Ijaw nation in the reality of current Nigeria political equation lies squarely on the shoulders of the Ijaw people and not Dokubo Asari. Despite being a minority tribe, from the day Isaac Boro took some men into the jungle in revolt against the Federal Government till date, the Ijaws have continued to work assiduously for improvement in their mode of political inclusion in Nigeria using different and even sometimes scary methodologies. They have manoeuvred themselves to a place of decisive reckoning in Nigeria's improbable political equation.

"Perfectly or imperfectly it has been a struggle to integrate the Ijaw man fully into the Nigerian political space. It is a struggle that has recorded measured setbacks and measured successes. It is a struggle that has raised the stake of the Ijaws in national politics. It is a struggle that has raised the Ijaw man from expendable minority to leadership in the political organogram of Nigeria. It is a struggle that has defined Ijaw consciousness in present day Nigeria and any attempt to go against or form political alliances with any region within Nigeria against President Tinubu will only destroy that successful achievements and will finally amount to the Ijaws inhaling political Hydrogen cyanide served by their son, Dokubo Asari."

CrimeEnugu Police Arrest Woman Who Broke Stepson’s Bone With Pestle by klintoski(op): 1:29pm On Oct 26, 2024
The Enugu State Government has taken swift action regarding the disturbing case of Mrs. Ada Ogbogu, who allegedly assaulted her stepson with a pestle, causing serious harm.

Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, announced on Saturday that Mrs. Ogbogu, a resident of Sunrise Estate in Emene, Enugu metropolis, was arrested on Friday and is now in police custody.

This decisive move demonstrates the state government's commitment to protecting its children and ensuring that such horrific incidents will not be tolerated. Enugu State has a strong stance against child mistreatment, and this arrest sends a clear message that perpetrators will face consequences.

It's reassuring to know that the government is taking proactive steps to safeguard the well-being of its young citizens. The state's dedication to children's welfare is evident in its policies and actions, making Enugu a safer place for its residents.

She said, “Once we were tipped off through one of our whistleblower channels on Friday, I quickly contacted the police and we all mobilised to the location, but only to meet the suspect, Mrs. Ada Ogbogu’s absence. We, therefore, headed for the National Orthopaedic Hospital Enugu, where we immediately effected her arrest after informing the hospital’s management.

“We were also at the victim’s bedside where we met with the team of doctors handling his case. The poor boy, aged three, had his femur or thigh bone broken.

“It is heart-wrenching how wickedly some people treat other people’s children and sometimes even their own children. But in Enugu State, we have zero tolerance for such excesses. Governor Peter Mbah has declared that no child should suffer abuse in Enugu State under his watch. Hence, this administration has made examples of culprits. This one will not be an exception after the police investigation.

CrimeEnugu Police Arrest Father, Native Doctor Over Alleged Conspiracy, Murder Of Son by klintoski(op): 12:40am On Oct 23, 2024
The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 67-year-old Uwakwe Eze for conspiring with 48-year-old native doctor Enuwa Odugu to murder Odugu's son, Chikwado Celestine Eze.

Last week, social media buzzed with reports of Chikwado's tragic death. The 26-year-old had received a visa to travel abroad and sought fortification at the native doctor's shrine before his journey.

According to a statement from the command's spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the native doctor has confessed to the crime, claiming that the boy died due to his failure to follow the ritual's guidelines.

"The Enugu State Police Command is making the public aware of the recent occurrence and handling of two separate murder cases. In the first case, a native doctor, one Enuwa Odugu “m”, aged 48, and Uwakwe Eze “m”, aged 67, were arrested for conspiracy and murder of Eze's 26-year-old son, one Chikwado Celestine Eze.

"The incident is alleged to have occurred when Uwakwe Eze took his son to the native doctor's shrine for rituals intended to fortify him with charms.

"However, during the ritual, the deceased was buried in a coffin but he unfortunately died in the process. He was rushed to the hospital and confirmed dead by the attending doctor, and his body deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

"The native doctor confessed to the crime and the previous performance of such rituals, attributing the death of the victim to his non-adherence to certain ritualistic rules he earlier prescribed for him."

Ndukwe added that "the case is under investigation, and the suspects will be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded."

CrimeEFCC Arraigns Impostor Nurse For Alleged N28.2m Fraud In Enugu by klintoski(op): 7:24pm On Oct 22, 2024
The Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has brought charges against Blessing Amaka David-Agwa, a fraudulent fertility nurse, before Justice Mohammed Garba Umar of the Federal High Court, sitting in Independence Layout, Enugu State.

David-Agwa faces 45 counts of fraudulent impersonation, forgery, and obtaining money under false pretenses amounting to N28,278,600 (Twenty-eight Million, Two Hundred and Seventy-eight Thousand, Six Hundred Naira).

Count 41 states: “That you, Blessing Amaka David-Agwa, sometime in 2024 in Enugu, within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, with intent to defraud, did obtain the sum of One Million, Six Hundred Thousand Naira (N1,600,000.00) from one Okenwa Joy Chiamaka, under the guise of being a Medical Fertility Nurse (specially trained to help women conceive easily), which pretext you knew to be false, thereby committing an offense contrary to Section 1 (1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Act.”

Count 24 reads: “That you, Blessing Amaka David-Agwa, sometime in 2024 in Enugu, within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, with intent to defraud, did obtain the sum of One Million, Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (N1,250,000.00) from one Amarachi Okpala, under the guise of being a Medical Fertility Nurse (specially trained to help women conceive easily), which pretext you knew to be false, thereby committing an offense contrary to Section 1 (1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Act.”

The defendant pleaded not guilty to all charges when they were presented. In light of her pleas, EFCC counsel Blessing N. Obasi requested a trial date and asked that the defendant be remanded at the Enugu State Correctional Facility.

However, defense attorney G. C. Madubuegwu informed the court of a pending bail motion, dated October 4, 2024. “It is filed pursuant to Section 162 and 165 (1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act,” he stated. After presenting the application, he requested bail for the defendant on lenient terms.

Obasi strongly opposed the bail request, citing the gravity of the charges and the mental health impact on the defendant’s victims.

After considering both arguments, Justice Umar adjourned the case to November 12, 2024, for a ruling on the bail application, and the defendant was subsequently remanded at the Enugu State Correctional Facility.

David-Agwa's legal troubles began on August 28, 2024, when the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) transferred her to the EFCC for investigation and possible prosecution after uncovering her fraudulent claims as a medical fertility nurse, duping unsuspecting victims.

Investigations revealed that she allegedly forged her Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria certificate and her University of Nigeria, Nsukka diploma, using these documents to impersonate a qualified Medical Fertility Nurse, specially trained to assist women in conceiving. It was also discovered that she successfully defrauded over 45 innocent women who fell victim to her deceitful claims.

PoliticsGovernor Mbah Flags Off Tractor Assembly Plant In Enugu by klintoski(op): 5:43pm On Oct 22, 2024
Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, Tuesday, flagged off the construction of Nortra Tractor Assembly Plant and Service Centre, an investment by ODK Group of Denmark, in Enugu city

On the same day, the governor also commissioned the New-Watson Doors Industry established by a Chinese firm at Nachi, Enugu State.

Flagging off the construction of the Nortra Tractors Plant and Service Centre, Governor Mbah noted that it was a significant step to his administration’s vision to grow the state’s economy from $4.4bn to $30bn.

“What we have gathered here to do today is not a mere symbolic act; it is certainly an act that takes us closer to the dream of having at least 1,000 tractors in Enugu State by next year.

“We have always said that Enugu is going to be that premier destination for investors to come. But we realised that, that will not happen just by wishing for it. Which is why what we see here today is Enugu State going that extra mile of making it attractive for investors to invest here. Which is also why we have placed an order for at least 1,000 tractors, which we hope to at least have through this assembly plant.

It would have been easier for us to place an order for 1,000 tractors. But we did not see the value in that, which is why we are only getting 200 tractors already assembled and imported here. But the remaining 800 will be assembled right here in Enugu State.

“Again, initiatives like what we are doing with Nortra, not only creates opportunities, but will also stimulate our economy. It boosts that economic growth that we are expecting and creates employment for our people,”
he said.

Mbah, therefore, promised to seek, identify with and support genuine investors, who want to partner with the state in the onerous journey to a $30bn economy.

“So, we are going to continue to support Nortra to ensure that we provide the basic amenities, the right infrastructure, and also security for your investment to thrive.

Earlier in her address, the Commissioner for Trade, Investment, and Industry, Adaora Chukwu, observed that Enugu was ODK Group’s first investment destination in Africa, adding that the Group’s specialisation and reputation for manufacturing innovative and high-quality agricultural equipment and machineries would scale-up agricultural production in the state.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Patrick Ubru, also described the venture as a huge leap for agriculture in the state.

Earlier in their address, the CEO of ODK Group Denmark, Mr. Morten Anderson, and the Managing Director of Nortra Tractors, Mr. Philip Njoku, said that Enugu was chosen as the first entry point into Africa because they “identified Enugu State as a state that is thriving powerfully in terms of innovation, commercialisation and everything you can think of in terms of development.”

Commissioning the New-Watson Doors Industry at Nachi, Mbah that the company was still contemplating as to which state to invest in at the time they met him in 2023 and commended them for believing in what his administration was doing to make Enugu State the preferred destination for investment.

He reiterated his administration’s determination to continue to de-risk investments and patronise investors and businesses in the state.

We have also created the enabling environment for the investors to thrive. We will be patronising the company, making sure we do not go outside of Enugu State to procure all that we need for our 260 Smart Green Schools, 260 Type 2 Healthcare Centres, and the other massive projects that we can get within the state,” he said.

He, therefore, urged other investors from China and other parts of the world to head to Enugu to invest.

In his remark, the CEO of New-Watson, Chen Shando, thanked Governor Mbah for “the massive support received from the government and the people of Enugu State.”

PoliticsPeter Obi Recounts His Horrible Experiences Travelling Through Nigerian Roads by klintoski(op): 2:52pm On Oct 19, 2024
Mr. Peter Obi, the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, has recounted his unpleasant experiences traveling through Nigerian roads re-echoing his appeal "for all tiers of government to prioritize the repair and completion of existing road infrastructure rather than launching new projects that may not be completed anytime soon, further adding to the growing list of abandoned projects scattered all over the country."

Obi in a post via his X account, said the experience is the same from Onitsha to Kogi, Calabar to Uyo Abuja to Kaduna and many others, appealing "that that there should be total commitment to alleviating the suffering of the Nigerian travelling public, rather than launching new projects."

His post reads;

On Tuesday the 15th, my journey from Onitsha in Anambra State to Anyigba in Kogi State by road once again underscored my consistent appeal for all tiers of government to prioritize the repair and completion of existing road infrastructure, rather than launching new projects that may not be completed anytime soon, further adding to the growing list of abandoned projects scattered all over the country.

The journey, which should normally take around three and a half hours, took us over seven hours. The route through Obollo Afor, Otukpa Branch, Ejule, and Anyigba was exhausting. On the return trip, we took an alternate route via Ogugu and Enugu-Ezike, departing Kogi State around 2:00 p.m. and not arriving back until about 9:00 p.m. – all for a meeting that lasted just 30 minutes.

This is my travel experience across the country this year. In the first quarter, I had cause to travel from Calabar to Uyo, a trip that should take about an hour, but it ended up taking four hours. I travelled from Port Harcourt to Bayelsa, thinking I would use the East-West Road to Warri, but it became a treacherous journey. Warri to Benin was a similar experience.

In August, I travelled from Abuja to Kaduna, where I spent over two hours on the Kaduna bypass alone.

The Onitsha to Benin route was no different.

My recent trip from Benin to Auchi and back was excruciating, and one cannot help but wonder. I know these things cannot be fixed overnight, but my appeal is that there should be total commitment to alleviating the suffering of the Nigerian travelling public, rather than launching new projects.

The resources should be directed toward improving the existing roads and easing the burden on commuters.

PoliticsWhy They Are After Me: Egiji, Son Of Ex-enugu Deputy Speaker Cries Out by klintoski(op): 10:58am On Oct 19, 2024
Egiji Atigwe, the son of former Enugu State House of Assembly Deputy Speaker David Atigwe, has vehemently denied allegations that he supplies guns to armed robbers, kidnappers, or any criminal gangs in Enugu State or beyond.

Atigwe, an engineer residing in Onitsha, Anambra State, claims he is being framed by a group of local security operatives in his hometown, Aji, Enugu Ezike, following his efforts to evict them from a family property that they had turned into a torture site within the community.

In a statement delivered through his lawyer, Chukwuemeka Abuguja, Atigwe explained that he had returned to the community shortly before the recent local government elections and witnessed horrific abuses inflicted on suspects by the local security group occupying the Atigwe family property without permission.

He stated, "The local security operatives gathered their torturing equipment and forcefully entered the Atigwe family property at Aji Junction. They were capturing people at random, aiming to torture them and potentially kill them on site. A similar incident occurred in 2019.

"We viewed this as an attempt to commit murder on our property and subsequently tarnish the family's reputation. People cannot just seize family property and inflict torture with clubs, machetes, and guns without our consent.

"Upon witnessing their actions, Egiji demanded that they leave. Fortunately, we recorded everything on video; the eviction was not executed covertly. Just weeks after this incident, we began noticing sinister efforts to frame Egiji.

"Recently, we saw a viral video featuring an individual named Emenike Egbuike, known as Emzor. With his hands bound and visibly distressed, he appeared to be speaking under duress. He claimed he was involved in a robbery and alleged that my client, Egiji Atigwe, supplied him with firearms.

"I took the initiative to question Ugochukwu Asanya after hearing his voice interrogating Emzor. I later discovered that Emzor was detained at the Igboeze North Police Station. I requested to see him, and upon interrogation, he revealed that he was accosted in front of Aji High School. Ugochukwu Asanya and his team assaulted him there and continued to beat him from 6 PM until 4 AM the following morning.

"You can see from the video that they used logs of wood rather than canes. Emzor said he was coerced into confessing to armed robbery and naming others they wanted to implicate. They gave him two choices: to name names or face death.

"He recounted that they lit a bonfire and told him it was either he implicated these individuals or he would perish in the flames. Faced with such terror, he agreed to confess to save his life. His body bears the scars of the torture he endured.

The lawyer emphasized that "the aim of this entire scheme is to damage the Atigwe family's reputation."

He further recounted that the following morning, another man, Kosi Eya, was arrested by the same security outfit, which pressured him to mention Atigwe's name to corroborate the earlier accusations. However, he refused, able to do so because there were witnesses present, and they could not risk killing him in broad daylight.

He added, "To this day, no evidence has been recovered from any of those arrested, nor has anyone come forward to report a kidnapping. Currently, there are no complaints in this case."

"I also want to make it clear that no member of the Atigwe family has attempted to manipulate the police or obstruct justice. Since the suspects were transferred to anti-kidnapping units, neither my family nor I have taken any steps to subvert justice. I am confident that the investigation will uncover the truth behind this fabricated story."

The President General of Aji autonomous Community, Slyverster Ayogu in a telephone interview corroborated the story that the vigilante group was ejected from the Atigwe’s property.

Built over ninety years ago, the school was the only government primary institution attended by nearly all the villages in the region, except for Ibite. It also served as a worship center for the Catholic Church and had long been in need of attention until Gidim Ejike Okonkwo and his wife, Mrs. Chika Okonkwo (née Chukwurah), stepped in to make a difference.

The event attracted political, traditional, and social leaders and generated buzz in the community for weeks, signaling a brighter future for the region.

He also highlighted that the governor's education policy addresses all levels, ensuring thorough growth across the sector.

Chief Ochi further remarked, "The Okonkwo family has set a standard for others to emulate, and we hope to see more contributions like this from individuals and organizations throughout Enugu State. Education is a collective responsibility."

"This is how one builds a lasting legacy—for future generations. I encourage other well-intentioned individuals to follow the Okonkwo family’s exemplary model of philanthropy," he urged.

In her speech, Mrs. Chika Okonkwo, originally from Ibite Village but married to Ugwuoma, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to God for the opportunity to work with her husband on such an impactful project for their community. "It has always been my aspiration to give back to society, and doing so at this critical moment in our land’s history fills my family with profound fulfillment," she remarked, her emotions evident.

She emphasized the importance of collective efforts in development, stating, "This project would not have been possible without the support and unity of our people. I also want to recognize the leadership of our community, especially the Igwe-elect, Chief Aloysius Chidozie Ogbonna Jnr, for his unwavering commitment to progress."

Mrs. Okonkwo also acknowledged Chief Ogbonna Jnr's role, saying, "His leadership has inspired hope among us. His continued support and insightful approach to community development embody the unity we need to propel our community forward." She expressed optimism that the community's renewed sense of purpose would lead to further initiatives like this.

Chief Aloysius Chidozie Ogbonna Jnr, the Igwe-elect of Ogugu Ntu-egbenese Ancient Kingdom, commended the Okonkwo family's vision for development. "For the first time in decades, we are inaugurating two separate projects within just one week. This clearly demonstrates the strength of unity and collaboration among our community leaders," he declared.

He continued, "What we are witnessing today is not merely the opening of a school; it signifies the dawn of a new era for our community. This accomplishment calls for continued cooperation as we work together to undertake more sustainable projects in the future."

Chief Ogbonna Jnr reminded the community that their future hinges on their solidarity, stating, "We have set the tone with this event, and with ongoing collaboration, there are no limits to what we can achieve."

Mrs. Chika Okonkwo, a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) based in Baltimore, Maryland, has made significant contributions to the healthcare sector. Specializing in mental health, she manages conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and more. Her practice at MedStar Health in Baltimore also offers support through psychopharmacology, cognitive behavioral therapy, and psychotherapy.

However, the Okonkwo and Nweke families' contributions to their community are not just a symbol of their generosity but also a call to action for all well-to-do members of society to uplift their hometowns, ensuring a brighter and more prosperous future for generations to come.

CrimePolice Warn Pos Operators About Risks Of Transactions Exceeding N500,000 by klintoski(op): 1:14pm On Oct 17, 2024
The Delta State Police Command has issued a strong warning to Point of Sale (PoS) operators, urging them to avoid facilitating large transactions, especially those exceeding N500,000.

According to the Command's public relations officer, SP Bright Edafe, such transactions may be linked to criminal activities, which could lead to serious legal repercussions.

This warning came in the wake of an ongoing investigation into an unidentified PoS operator who received a suspicious N4 million deposit, believed to be ransom related to a kidnapping case.

In a video shared on his personal X account (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, SP Edafe presented the PoS operator’s account of her involvement. She revealed that a customer, Timothy Ogenechukwu, had previously conducted smaller transactions with her.

“He has been using my services for transactions of maybe N5,000 or N2,000,” she said.

However, she recounted how, on this occasion, Ogenechukwu transferred a staggering N4 million without offering any explanation for the sudden increase.

“He just called me that morning and asked me to check my account,” she recalled.

The operator insisted she had no idea that the funds were linked to a criminal act, maintaining that she believed it to be a standard transaction.

“I didn’t know,” she stated, stressing that she had no prior indication that the money was related to a ransom payment in a kidnapping case.

Despite her claims of ignorance, the operator acknowledged her profit from the transaction, which totaled N40,000.

“My profit is N40,000,” she disclosed during the interrogation.

SP Edafe pressed her further, asking if she understood the risks of allowing substantial sums to flow through her account. He indicated that the funds were traced back to a kidnapping victim, underscoring that her role in receiving and disbursing the money could render her complicit in the crime.

Edafe used this incident as a cautionary lesson for all PoS operators, advising them to reject any transactions over N500,000 and direct such clients to banks.

“I have been educating people on social media, especially PoS operators. Anyone wishing to conduct transactions above N500,000 should visit the bank,” Edafe warned.

He added, “If you encounter a PoS operator receiving unusually high amounts, be aware that there may be criminal elements involved, as these transactions should be handled at the bank.”

PoliticsAmb. Bianca Ojukwu In USA, Re-echoes Call For Nnamdi Kanu’s Release by klintoski(op): 11:59am On Oct 17, 2024
The American Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID), a not-for-profit organization comprising American citizens of Igbo heritage who currently serve or have honorably served in various branches of the United States military, held its annual convention from October 11th to 13th, 2024, in Charlotte, North Carolina.

This year’s theme, “Stand Up for Your People,” focused largely on the pressing issues facing the Igbo homeland, particularly the ongoing insecurity crisis affecting several Southeastern states.

The convention attracted critical stakeholders, including military personnel, veterans, industry leaders, academics, representatives from the North Carolina Governor’s office, and various Igbo associations, creating a platform for dialogue, strategy development, and the exchange of ideas aimed at advancing Igboland.

In her address, the special guest of honor, Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu, the widow of late Biafra leader Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu and former Nigerian Ambassador to Spain, underscored the necessity for the Igbo diaspora to uphold and protect their core values, identity, and heritage. She expressed that concerns regarding the security situation in the Southeast were valid and noted that this issue is not confined to the Southeast but is a widespread crisis affecting many Nigerian states.

She urged the five governors of the Southeast to collaborate more effectively in addressing this urgent situation, warning that the current state of insecurity poses an existential threat to communities in Igboland.

Ambassador Ojukwu highlighted that “the incessant killings and kidnappings, the rising rate of farmland annexation by armed herdsmen and other armed invaders have severely impacted both the agricultural and economic prospects, along with social activities in many Igbo communities.”

She lamented the opportunistic criminal elements who have exploited separatist agitation for their own nefarious ends, sufficiently degrading the capabilities of security forces with their superior firepower.

Ojukwu noted that many people were fleeing their villages out of fear, transforming once-thriving communities into depleted and ghost-like towns. She called on the Southeast governors, as the chief security officers of their states, to intensify their individual and collective efforts to restore order.

She reiterated the call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, asserting that his freedom would significantly improve the security situation in the Southeast.

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, representing Abia North, stated that the current insecurity in Ala Igbo can be traced back to the arrest and ongoing illegal detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in 2021. He questioned why the Southeast has the highest number of police and military checkpoints per kilometer in Nigeria while unknown gunmen operate freely, causing destruction unchecked. Abaribe maintained that genuine government and security agencies' intent to tackle insecurity is necessary for any meaningful reduction across the country.

Other speakers included Hon. Uche Onyeagocha, a former lawmaker and past secretary to the Imo State government; business magnate Chief Dr. Kingson Njoku; Haitian Senator Jean Charles Moise; and industrialist John Gregg, followed by a panel discussion on the economic prospects of the Eastern Region.

Dr. Sly Onyia, President of the Veterans Association, announced that AVID is currently working to establish a direct flight from the United States to the Southeast.

The convention concluded with a banquet featuring lively speeches, entertainment, and award presentations. A highlight of the event was the appointment of Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu as the Patroness of the American Veterans of Igbo Descent association.

PoliticsPeter Obi Donates Coaster Bus, Cash To Kogi Nursing School by klintoski(op): 8:25am On Oct 16, 2024
The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi on Tuesday, 15th October, 2024 presented a coaster bus and made cash donation to Grimard College of Nursing Sciences in Anyigba, Kogi State.

In a post made on his X account, Mr. Obi said the donation ( a fairly used 32-seater coaster bus and Five million Naira) is in fulfilment of the pledge made to the school three months ago.

"Yesterday, I returned to Grimard College of Nursing Sciences in Anyigba, Kogi State, to honor a pledge I had earlier made three months ago.

"I had, in my earlier visit to the College, donated ₦10 million to support learning.

"Both the Proprietor and the Rector informed me then that their most urgent need for accreditation was a 32-seater coaster bus for the student’s clinical experience visits.

"In my further discussion with the Bishop, Most Rev. Dr. Anthony Adaji, he mentioned that since a brand-new bus now costs over ₦100 million, a fairly used one costing between ₦20 million and ₦30 million would suffice.

"Today, I returned to the College to present a fairly used bus within the range mentioned by the Proprietor, to assist the students in their critical clinical experience assignments.

"Additionally, I donated ₦5 million to cover the cost of registration, insurance, and other expenses for one year.

"I extend my sincere thanks to the Proprietor, Management, and staff of the institution for their warm reception and commend their tireless efforts in contributing to the betterment of humanity through education and health apostolate.

"I assured them that I would continue to support them in my modest way as we work together towards a new Nigeria that is POssible."

PoliticsInternational Day Of The Girl Child: HFAC Empowers 500 Girls In Enugu by klintoski(op): 8:40pm On Oct 14, 2024
A Non-Governmental Organisation, Hope For African Children (HFAC), has equipped over 500 girls in Enugu State with essential skills to lead and realize their full potential.

The young girls were empowered during the "Girls Dare to Lead Summit," organized by HFAC to mark the International Day of the Girl Child on Friday in Enugu.

Addressing the participants, Noel Alumona, the Founder and Chief Executive of HFAC, emphasized that the gathering celebrated the strength and determination of young girls to create a brighter future for themselves, their communities, and the world.

Alumona, a United Nations-awarded Nigerian, revealed that the organisation was recognizing over 500 young girls from 32 secondary schools across the state and their remarkable aspirations.

He stated that the summit reflects HFAC's commitment to empowering girls, providing them with the necessary tools and resources to succeed, and inspiring them to become leaders today and in the future.

"At HFAC, we believe that every girl deserves the opportunity to reach her full potential, ensuring that girls and young people with disabilities are not overlooked through inclusive education and equal opportunities," he explained. "We are preparing girls to lead in every area of their lives before and after they turn 18, and we express our gratitude to our staff and volunteers who make this possible."

"We are here to inspire, educate, and equip them with the knowledge and skills they need to pursue their aspirations confidently," he added.

One highlight of the summit was the Girls Innovate Prize, a competition designed to foster creativity, problem-solving, and leadership among the girls. Alumona explained that by encouraging them to identify challenges in their schools and communities and develop innovative solutions, HFAC is empowering them to become change-makers and agents of positive transformation.

"We are also launching the 'Girls Dare to Lead Bootcamp,' a leadership development program aimed at empowering girls to see themselves as leaders. By equipping them with essential leadership skills, knowledge, and opportunities, we can inspire them to make a significant impact in their communities," he stressed.

Alumona further elaborated on "The PadHER Project," an initiative focused on tackling the critical issue of period poverty in Nigeria. He revealed that millions of girls nationwide miss school each month due to a lack of access to sanitary pads. The project aims to bridge this gap by advocating for government support to provide free sanitary pads and safe spaces for girls in schools.

"By ensuring that girls have access to menstrual hygiene products, we are helping them stay in school and continue their education without the fear of being stained. By investing in their education, empowerment, and well-being, we are investing in Nigeria's future," he said.

"This is why I urge the government—starting with our own Enugu State—to prioritize the needs of the girl child," he appealed.

Ngozi Enih, the Enugu State Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, encouraged the girls to speak up and assert their voices. She urged them to embrace their uniqueness and individuality, never compromising on their values or aspirations.

"Stand strong against societal challenges like premarital sex, early marriage, peer pressure, cultism, and any behaviors that undermine your potential," she advised.

Angel Okwudili, a student from Raymond College Abakpa in Enugu, expressed her excitement about the program, stating, "I learned that as a girl, I should not miss school because of my period."

HealthEminent Sisters: Prayer Houses Not Solution To Breast Cancer Treatment by klintoski(op): 6:47pm On Oct 12, 2024
Eminent Sisters, a charity-based organization, has urged women to abandon the notion of seeking prayer houses when they notice abnormalities in their breasts. They emphasize that routine checks for early detection are crucial for effective breast cancer management.

The group, composed of professionals from various fields, delivered this message during their awareness walk through the streets of Enugu on Saturday, October 12, 2024.

Lady Christine Miller, President of Eminent Sisters in Enugu, stressed the importance of women paying close attention to their health.

Miller highlighted that the urgency for this awareness arises from the increasing number of deaths due to late-stage cancer diagnoses. “We've observed that many women who succumb to cancer are diagnosed too late. When detected at stage one or two, survival rates improve significantly.

"Routine checks are vital. When you shower, take a moment to examine yourself in various areas. Not every lump signifies cancer, but the habit of checking regularly makes a critical difference. Cancer is not a death sentence; if caught early, it can be managed successfully,” she stated.

Barr. Margaret Nwagbo, chairlady of the awareness walk, remarked on the need for women to break free from the stigma imposed by cultural and societal norms.

Nwagbo encouraged women to combine faith with proactive health measures. “Rather than always consulting pastors or churches when you notice changes in your body, visit a nearby clinic or hospital for a proper diagnosis. Women should prioritize their health by scheduling routine check-ups.

“We must educate our young girls about these diseases from an early age so they are well-informed. Women are often constrained by cultural expectations—if you experience abnormal discharge, see a doctor.”

Additionally, Ngozi Chukwu, an Associate Professor and a member of Eminent Sisters called for increased stakeholder engagement in raising awareness about cancer. She emphasized the necessity of preventive measures over reactive ones, which often spiral out of control among women.

PoliticsMbah Appoints Miss Universe Nigeria As Enugu Brand Ambassador by klintoski(op): 6:31pm On Oct 10, 2024
It was a homecoming for the reigning Miss Universe Nigeria, Chidimma Onwe Adetsina, Thursday, as Governor Peter Mbah of her home state, Enugu, received and appointed her a brand ambassador of the state, noting that her doggedness represents the innate attribute of the people of Enugu State.

Receiving the indigene of Amurri, Nkanu West LGA of the state and her father, Mr. Okechukwu Onwe, at the Government House, Enugu, Mbah said she had demonstrated that with determination, the young could achieve their goals.

“I am very delighted to congratulate and welcome you to your homeland. Enugu State has played a consequential role in the history of this nation. So, you should really be proud of your heritage and we are equally proud to have you as a daughter of Enugu State.

“Your story is inspiring. You could see that despite all attempts to malign and discourage you, you demonstrated that you are a true daughter of Enugu State. You overcame those challenges with the grit and resilience the people of Enugu State are known for.

“With the height and the feat you have attained today, you are able to act as major influence to our young people, girls in particular. We are going to look at how you could engage some of our young people, share your experience, what you have been through, and how you got to where you are today. Sharing that will be quite inspiring and encouraging,” Mbah stated.

He said his administration’s investment in education was driven by the need to equip the youths to actualise their full potential, assuring Miss Chidimma of the support and goodwill of the people of the state as she competes for the international Miss Universe in Mexico.

“We are obsessed with investment we make in our youths, which is why it is a state where 33 per cent of our budget goes to education. That is because we believe that the true wealth of any nation or indeed any state lies in the quality and standard of their human resources.

“As you go into the next stage of the competition and career, you are going to carry our flag. And as you do that, you can count on our support and commitment to your success,”
he concluded.

Speaking, Miss Chidimma, while appreciating the Government and people of Enugu State and Nigeria for the warm welcome and love accorded her, commended Governor Mbah for prioritising education, pledging to work with the state to mentor and encourage the youths as a brand ambassador

“It has been a lovely experience coming to Nigeria. I feel accepted and loved. I also want to use the opportunity to commend you on your great works.

“As a woman, who is really passionate about education, it is really an honour to have someone contribute to the education system for the betterment of the people and also for better tomorrow,”
she stated.

Chidimma noted that although she had been living in South Africa, she had to withdraw from Miss South Africa competition for lack of acceptance and the storm generated by her participation, only for Nigeria to pick her up. She expressed the readiness to serve as a beacon of hope to youths, especially young women.

“They said I am not South Africa enough because my name is Chidimma; and in the final week of the competition, I had to withdraw for my safety and my family because the backlash was too much for me.

“After my withdrawal, I received an invitation from Sliverbird, and I accepted that invitation to come and compete for Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 and I was crowned.

“I am really grateful because it was the opportunity for me to come back home to reclaim my heritage. I felt the love and I felt accepted. Nigeria picked me up when I was on my knees and I am really grateful.

“I really do feel that my story is a very powerful one, not only in Nigeria, but all over the world. A lot of youths can resonate with my story and they can learn from my journey,” she said.

Speaking with Government House correspondents, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dame Ugochi Madueke, expressed the confidence that Miss Chidimma would triumph in Mexico to emerge Miss Universe.
