Federal Polytechnic Orogun, Delta State, has received the approval of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to commence nine additional National Diploma (ND) programmes, bringing its total academic offerings to 12. This approval was conveyed in a letter dated October 4, 2024, signed by Dr. Fatima Kabir Umar, Director of Polytechnic Programmes, on behalf of NBTE’s Executive Secretary, Prof. Idris Bugaje. The newly approved programmes are; Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Marketing, Mass Communication, Library and Information Science, Hospitality Management and Tourism, Computer Science, and Science Laboratory Technology. This development followed a resource re-inspection visit by a team of NBTE inspectors between September 12 and 14, 2024, which assessed the institution’s readiness to offer the additional courses, ensuring the Polytechnic met the required standards. Reacting, the Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Duke Okoro, expressed his delight at the approval, stating that the Polytechnic’s mission aligns with the expansion of these programmes. “This is a major milestone for us at FEPO. We are driven by a clear vision: to be an institution grounded in cutting-edge digital literacy for vocational skills acquisition and character development," said Okoro, who is fondly referred to as the "Digital Rector" by students and staff. He added, " Our goal is to equip students with the knowledge and hands-on experience they need to thrive in today’s fast-changing world." The Polytechnic, established in 2022, followed the relentless efforts of former Deputy Senate President, Chief Ovie Omo-Agege and was approved by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2022. The institution began academic operations in January 2024 with three initial NBTE-approved courses: Statistics, Accounting, and Business Administration and Management. The 138 pioneer students for these courses were matriculated on May 11, 2024. With this latest NBTE approval, Federal Polytechnic Orogun is set to offer students a broader range of courses designed to meet the demands of Nigeria’s growing industries. “Our academic programmes are aligned with the needs of the job market, ensuring that our students graduate with the practical skills required to excel in their careers,” Dr. Okoro added. Dr. Okoro highlighted the core values guiding the institution, including academic excellence, creativity, innovation, integrity, discipline, equity, and social justice. "We are dedicated to providing quality education that prepares students for successful careers and fulfilling lives," he noted, emphasizing that the Polytechnic's programmes are designed to meet the demands of a rapidly changing job market. “We are excited to welcome new students and offer them the tools and knowledge to succeed in their chosen fields. With the addition of these nine programmes, we continue our mission to develop self-reliant, skilled graduates ready to contribute to societal development,” the Rector concluded. Also reacting, the visibly elated Registrar of the Polytechnic, Mrs. Christine Aluyi, stated that “the expansion of academic programmes is expected to attract a larger student body for the 2024/2025 academic session. The Registrar announced that admissions for these new courses would begin immediately. "The newly approved programmes will provide students with practical skills, equipping them for the workforce upon graduation," she said. "We are committed to offering a dynamic and supportive learning environment that fosters passion, hones skills, and empowers students to achieve their goals." She further stated. With the addition of these nine programmes, Federal Polytechnic Orogun continues to build its reputation as an institution dedicated to academic and ethical excellence, preparing its students for success in various industries, while shaping the future of Nigerian technical and vocational education. https://journalist101.com/2024/10/05/nbte-approves-nine-additional-programmes-for-federal-polytechnic-orogun/

The Enugu State Government has demolished yet another property linked to kidnapping activities in the state, warning landlords that it would not entertain any excuses in enforcing relevant laws of the state mandating the government to bring down any property linked to such evil acts. Section 315 (Second Amendment) of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 30, Laws of Enugu State provides, “If the building or structure owned by the offender or any other person, who knows or ought to reasonably know that the building or structure is so being used for that purpose, the building or structure shall be demolished or forfeited to the State Government.” Speaking to newsmen at the site, the Executive Chairman, Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, Hon. Uche Anya, explained that the mansion located at Amaebo Owelli Autonomous Community in Awgu LGA of the state, was said to be used for keeping victims of kidnapping. According to him, the video of a male kidnapping victim, who had several AK-47 riffles pointed at his head in May 2024, was recorded in the same building, but security agencies were able to track the building, rescuing the victim, while also apprehending most of the criminals and recovering a cache of arms and ammunition. “What you see here today is the continuation of the war of the Enugu State Government against all manner of criminality. Today, we are here to take down a kidnappers’ den. The property you see us taking down right now is a place where horrendous criminal activities happened. “For instance, on 25th of May 2024, some deadly kidnappers abducted a man in Enugu, brought him here, stripped bare, even naked to his red boxers, bound him, pointed guns at him, and forced him to start talking to his family to request for money. They posted that video to his relatives. “They held him down, but to the glory of God and the commitment of Governor Mbah, who is giving his all to security, the government and security agencies, through our state-of-the-art security system, were able to see what was happening in this rural community. “Security agencies moved to the place. Every other person was arrested, but the kingpin escaped to Ebonyi. We tracked him to Ebonyi, and he escaped to Lagos where the Enugu State Government and the security agencies caught up with him. Several AK-47 rifles, semi-automatic weapons and all manners of ammunition; dozens of proscribed and offensive weapons were recovered. “Interestingly, the kingpin of the gang that did this nonsense was a member of the same gang we went after somewhere at Ogbeke Nike. “To those who say why not convert these properties to good use, we want these to serve as a deterrent in accordance with the law. The Enugu State Government does not want anything that will remind us of the deadly criminality. We just want to put it out of our minds. We do not need to acquire a criminal’s property to use it to serve the public. We bring it down and we do our own thing. We do not want to profit from their criminality,” he stated. Calling for vigilance on the part of property owners, he said, “So, this is a warning to every landlord. The Enugu State Government will never accept it as an excuse. I am in Australia. I am in America. My brother-in-law took people to my property. Every landlord, once you put up a house in Enugu, we hold you responsible for any criminality that happens in your property; and once it becomes a violent crime, kidnapping, killing, armed robbery, we will take down the property in line with the law that was made by our predecessors. We will enforce it to the letter. “As I speak to you, the government has taken over this property. That is why we are tearing it down. The title deed is revoked. The government of Enugu State will probably put up a clinic or something that will be more beneficial to the people of Owelli Court.” The Mbah Administration has been carrying out a demolition campaign on properties linked to kidnapping and violent crimes to serve as a deterrent, insisting that no criminal would be allowed to enjoy the proceeds of crimes in the state. Recall that the state government had also in August demolished properties linked to kidnapping at Ogbeke Nike and Nkwubor Nike both in Enugu East LGA, recovering cache of arms and ammunition. https://journalist101.com/2024/10/05/photos-multimillion-naira-mansion-used-for-kidnapping-demolished-in-enugu/

A female student was tragically killed and two others injured when a fellow student, celebrating the conclusion of final year exams, drove recklessly with friends in a motorcade at the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu. An eyewitness reported that the graduating student lost control of the vehicle, which then barreled into a crowd of students. A video circulating on WhatsApp captures the aftermath of the accident, showing students lifting the car in a desperate attempt to free the body of the victim trapped beneath. In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Acting Rector of IMT, Emeka Ejim, clarified that the deceased was not an IMT student but a student from Peaceland College, who was on campus to sign out one of the injured students. He also confirmed that two other students from the Public Administration Department sustained injuries in the crash. They are currently receiving medical treatment at Posh Hospital in the New Haven area of Enugu. One of the injured, an HND II student, is set to be transferred to the Orthopaedic Hospital in Enugu for further care after X-rays revealed a leg fracture. Mr. Ejim announced that, in light of the incident, the institute has suspended all final year examinations indefinitely. He underscored that the institution had repeatedly warned students against engaging in unruly celebrations. An emergency meeting of the school’s Academic Board and management has been scheduled for Wednesday, October 2, 2024, to discuss the issue further. The institution’s spokesperson, Mark Eze, confirmed the suspension, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation into this tragic event. “Despite our warnings, some students chose to celebrate dangerously, leading to this unfortunate incident,” Mr. Eze lamented. https://journalist101.com/2024/10/02/reckless-student-celebrating-final-year-exam-kills-one-injures-others-at-imt-enugu/

The Enugu State Government has called an emergency meeting with traditional rulers and presidents-general of communities in Nsukka, following the deadly attacks by 'Oriokpa' masquerade that resulted in two fatalities. In addition, the state government has launched an investigation into the activities of the Oriokpa masquerade groups in the region and pledged to prosecute those responsible. This information was conveyed in a statement by the Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development, and Chieftaincy Affairs, Okey Ogbodo, in Enugu. The violence, which erupted earlier this week, is part of a troubling pattern of alleged misconduct by the Oriokpa masquerades, who were previously involved in a widely condemned assault on a female nurse in April. On September 19, hundreds of women from Eha-Alumona, a community in the Nsukka Council Area, took to the streets to protest the ongoing attacks and harassment by masquerades in their locality. Mr. Ogbodo reported that the Enugu State Government had received alarming accounts of the "untoward activities" of Oriokpa masqueraders in certain parts of the Nsukka Council Area, leading to chaos, bodily harm, and loss of life. “Accordingly, and following the express directive of Governor Peter Mbah, I invite the traditional rulers and Presidents-General of the affected communities to meet with me this Friday,” he stated. "The meeting will take place in my office at 1 p.m. The communities involved include Nguru, Isiakpu, Echara, Nru, Edem-Ezema, Iheagu, Ihe, Owere, and Umuoyo. "Furthermore, the governor has directed the Commissioner of Police to initiate a comprehensive investigation into these incidents. “The investigation will cover the reported deaths linked to the activities of the masquerade groups, with the aim of holding those responsible accountable,” Mr. Ogbodo said. While expressing condolences to the families of the deceased, the commissioner emphasized that the government will not tolerate any further excesses from individuals or groups. “Our citizens should not live in fear; the rights and safety of our women, children, youth, and every resident of Enugu State must be protected at all times. “Thus, any such transgressions by the Oriokpa masqueraders or any other group will face appropriate consequences from the government,” Mr. Ogbodo added. https://journalist101.com/2024/09/27/enugu-oriokpa-masquerade-violence-claims-two-lives-state-government-responds/

A significant crisis is unfolding in the newly established Enu Agu autonomous community in Akpugo, Nkanu West local government area of Enugu State, over the alleged imposition of a traditional ruler and president general without any election or selection process. Furious villagers, numbering in the hundreds, journeyed to Enugu town, questioning how just two families out of the 22 in their community could unilaterally dictate decisions without facing any resistance. In one of their placards, the community alleged that; "The Imposition Of Chieftaincy and Town Union Leadership is a Game to Grab all the Communal Land and Mineral Resources at Enu Agu community." Another one reads: "We Are Praying For Quick Assistance From The Government Of Enugu State To Constitute A Pane Of Inquiry To Investigate The Communal Discrimination Against Particular Family Calling Them Slaves And They Are 98 Percent In Number While Those Impostors Are 2 Percent Residents In Enu-agu Community." "We are saying no to impostors Sylvester Nnaji selfacclaimed lgwe Elect and Ikenna Ogbodo self acclaimed PG of Enu-Agu autonomous Community Akpugo." During their protest on September 25th, 2024, Chief Hon. Barr. John Amechi Edeh presented their position to the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, their first stop. He emphasized that the representatives of the 20 families—despite not being consulted or contributing to the government in the creation of Enu Agu Autonomous Community—have accepted the new community structure. However, he stated, "the Enu Agu Community has yet to establish a code of conduct to govern the selection, installation, and oversight of traditional rulers." Edeh also pointed out that, "A Town Union or Constitution to guide our leadership has not been established." He informed the Speaker that "despite this lack of structure, some individuals—Sylvester Ikechukwu Nnaji and Mr. Ikenna Ogbodo—have begun to impersonate the roles of traditional ruler and President General of the newly created community without any election or selection process." In response, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Uche Ugwu, assured the villagers that their protest would receive appropriate attention and be escalated to the relevant authorities. Represented by Hon. Magnus Edeh, the Speaker remarked that "all involved parties will be invited for a roundtable discussion" and expressed gratitude for the peaceful manner in which the protest was conducted. The community also delivered their protest letter to the House, expressing thanks for the attention given to their concerns, and reiterated their call for an election to be conducted within their community. Their next destination was the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development & Chieftaincy Affairs, where Commissioner Deacon Okey Ogbodo received them. After listening to their grievances, Deacon Ogbodo stated that their complaint was entirely new to the ministry and assured them that the other party would be invited for a resolution. Chief Edeh also submitted their protest letter to Lion Building, Enugu State Government House for the Governor's consideration. https://journalist101.com/2024/09/25/unease-in-enugu-community-as-villagers-protest-imposition-of-traditional-ruler-president-general-without-election-photos/

The Onuogba community in Enugu East local government area of Enugu State has dismissed claims that former Minister of Power, Prof. Bath Nnaji, is involved in land grabbing in their area. Reports emerged last weekend that protesters from Ezza-Nkomoro accused the chairman of Geometric Power of land grabbing following Prof. Nnaji’s attempt to reclaim his land at Onuogba-Nike, located off the Enugu-Abakaliki highway. However, during a press briefing, Chief Emmanuel Ubosi, the former President General of Onuogba-Nike, asserted that these allegations are completely unfounded. He stated that the Nkomolo people are tenants in the area, questioning how a "visitor can own ancestral land in another community." He elaborated that the Nkomoro people, who accuse Prof. Nnaji of land grabbing, are migrants from Ezza-Agu in Ezza North local government area of Ebonyi State. They were permitted to occupy a specific portion of Onuogba-Nike land and hold no rights over the rest of it. “We, the Onuogba-Nike, invited the Ezza people in 1956 during a dispute with our neighbouring Nkwubo community, which had also invited another group of Ezza people over a different land dispute at 'Aǹuri.' We ultimately came to a peaceful agreement. Our people allocated over 62 hectares of land in Ogbagu for them to reside in.” Presenting a map of the area, Chief Ubosi indicated that the Ezza people moved beyond the land originally given to them and began encroaching on other lands at Ogbanu and Idume. He stressed that the land Prof. Nnaji is accused of grabbing is located in Idume; therefore, claims of a forceful takeover are unfounded. "Prof. Bath Nnaji acquired the land from Alinta, whom our people sold the land in 1978. He has used this land to cultivate citrus and pineapples. Certificate of Occupancy presented to Alinta in 1987 “They contested the ownership of this land as far back as 1974, leading our people to take legal action. We received a favorable judgment on March 27, 2004, during Justice Innocent Umezuruike’s tenure. They appealed in 2005 and lost again, with our favour confirmed on June 24, 2016.” A copy of the appeal court judgement He urged the government to ensure that the Nkomoro people refrain from encroaching on land that rightfully belongs to the Onuogba community, which has been legitimately sold to Prof. Nnaji. On the matter of legal proceedings, Prof. Nnaji's attorney, Barr. Benjamin Nwobodo stated that while the land issue was before the court, the Ezza people failed to submit any documents to contest Alinta’s ownership, from whom Nnaji bought the land. “It was only after Justice Olaedo's ruling in 2013, which affirmed Alinta's rights, that Alinta’s children decided to transfer possession to Prof. Nnaji, prompting the Ezza people to create unrest. Nnaji has not dispossessed the Nkomoro people of their land; the buildings that were demolished do not belong to them, and Prof. Nnaji has extended an olive branch to any affected individuals for negotiation. “Therefore, Prof. Nnaji’s assertion of his property rights is valid. The Nkomoro people reside adjacent to his land, not within it. Thus, Prof. Nnaji is not a land grabber, as he acquired his land legally. The Nigerian Broadcasting Commission in its review of the Broadcasting Code (6th Edition) unequivocally "prohibits any broadcaster and licensee from entering into any form of agreement, contract or take any decision which has the objective or intention of preventing, restricting or distorting Competition" (abridged) With the amended act, hopes became very high at least for the common man who can not afford a monthly subscription but looking forward to the other competitors whose major selling point was the Pay As You Go package! The then DG, Armstrong Idachaba had in a Press briefing in March 2020 just after the 6th Amendment assured Nigerians that the New Broadcasting Code would break the Monopoly of "greedy capitalists" who boast of being "dominant players" and allow Local Pay TV Platforms to thrive. One would have expected Industry players like the Broadcasting Stations, MultiChoice etc to comply with this code but the opposite would become the case. Personally, I have yet to find anywhere in the world where exclusivity has grown an economy. Competition in a fair competitive ground is the key to the development of Broadcasting in Nigeria. I am particularly proud of the Local Pay TV Platforms like Moreplex TV, a local Pay TV channel where Nigerians can have access to TV content at very low subscription prices who has refused to be intimidated by this intentional act capable of Economic sabotage and derailing Job creation. My heart leapt with joy recently when I sighted a Court Judgement secured by Moreplex with Multichoice Nigeria Ltd, National Broadcasting Commission and the Honorable Minister for Information and Culture as defendants. A very laudable step at ending Monopoly and exclusivity which has destroyed local investors. Justice Phoebe M. Ayua of the Federal High Court at Port Harcourt had in an impressive and fair judgement on March 8th 2024 ordered MultiChoice to sublicense some requested Channels to Moreplex TV and that its continuous refusal is unlawful and a breach of the clear provisions of the Nigerian Broadcasting Code 6th edition as amended. The Court also declared that the failure of NBC as a regulatory body to issue directives or impose sanctions on Multichoice amounts to dereliction and a breach of their statutory duty. The Court further granted the sum of #200,000,000 as general damages against the defendants for the losses of the plaintiff's business with a 10% Post-judgment interest on the judgment sum from the date of judgment till final liquidation. For reasons best known to NBC, having failed to obey their own Code, they also failed to obey the Court order as they never issued the directives asking MultiChoice to hand off the exclusivity of some of the Channels to enable Local Pay TV stations like Moreplex Tv and others thrive. While they were feet dragging at obeying the court, I would understand that MultiChoice had appealed this judgement which I know is their inalienable right but No Gain Saying that No Judge is expected to rule on the contrary as the NBC Code 6th edition is crystal clear on exclusivity and Monopoly of channels. Meanwhile, Following the appointment of The current DG of NBC, Charles Ebuebu, most of us who had known him as a thorough practitioner were hopeful that things would be different and we are still hopeful that this hydra-headed monster called Monopoly and Exclusivity by the "Greedy Capitalists"(thanks to Idachaba) militating against Local investors would become a thing of the past. We are indeed looking forward to a Free and Fair system for Pay TV operators in Nigeria and in turn, give consumers the opportunity of Choice. The Enugu State Police Command have dismissed as "untrue and misleading," the reports that a certain woman after dumping her children commited suicide by running into a moving vehicle in front of ogui Police Station. The report which went viral earlier this week and was published in various online and national dailies, asserted that the woman suffering from depression over hardship dumped her children in the Ogui Police Station of the Command on Saturday, March 2, 2024 a killed herself afterwards. However, the command's public relations officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe in a statement released on Thursday, 7th March, 2024 clarified that the incident never happened anywhere near the said station. Clarifying what investigation revealed, Ndukwe said: "On March 2, at about 8:30 a.m., the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) of Central Police Station (CPS) and Ogui Police Division received distress calls alleging that a woman abandoned her three children in front of God Is Good Terminal along Ogui Road by Osisatech Roundabout, Enugu. "The callers further alleged that the woman stripped herself naked due to a mental disorder before running off to an unknown destination. The DPOs and their teams immediately moved to the scene, where they found and took the children to Ogui Police Station and commenced investigations to locate their mother. "During investigations, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, wife of the Executive Governor of Enugu State, visited the Police Station, offering scholarships for welfare support for all three children (names withheld), aged six, three and two years, respectively. Afterward, they were handed over to the Ministry of Gender Affairs and Social Development through Mrs. Ngozi Enih, the Honourable Commissioner overseeing the Ministry. "Additionally, the woman's husband reported to the Police Station and stated that his yet-to-be seen wife recently started displaying strange behaviours, which suggested signs of mental health issues. He further stated that he returned from work in the morning hours of the said day of the incident, and met the absence of his wife and the children at their home in the Ugwuaji area of Enugu South Local Government Area. "It is, therefore, expedient to categorically state that, contrary to the untrue and misleading viral publications, there was no such incident of the said woman dumping the children and committing suicide through a fatal motor accident in front of Ogui Police Station. Moreover, there was no fatal motor-pedestrian accident recorded in front of the Police Station or along the entire stretch of Ogui Road, Enugu, on March 2, 2024. "Consequently, while investigative actions are on course to trace the whereabouts and ascertain the condition of the woman, the public has been enjoined to disregard the untrue and misleading publications. Furthermore, the publishers are advised to always investigate and get their facts right before rushing to the press with such information that is capable of misinforming and misleading the public." https://journalist101.com/2024/03/07/report-of-woman-dumping-her-children-committing-suicide-in-front-of-station-untrue-misleading-police/

On Saturday, October 7th, 2023, Kachi James Arts Gallery opened in Enugu. Speaking at the unveiling of the Gallery the Founder, Kachi Aghasili said that the Gallery is intended to provide a platform for budding artists to showcase their works and also serve as a melting point for the showcasing of different cultural heritages. Aghasili who said that she had always nursed the ambition to own a gallery over a decade, said that her choice of Enugu as a destination was informed by the fact that the state has a great mixture of arts and history. "We want to give emerging artists an opportunity to be seen, heard and discovered," she said, adding that most of the Galleries that already exist are meant for the big names in the industry, with little focusing on those who are still coming up. Aghasili said her love for arts and intellectual property motivated her to establish the Kachi James Arts Gallery According to the Founder, who doubles as a lawyer in the United States of America, said she set up the gallery to present a ground where "we can have emerging artists as well as popular artists". In her address, Commissioner for Culture and Tourism in the state, Ugochi Madueke said that the current administration of Governor Peter Mbah in Enugu State remains committed to boosting the tourism sector in the state, thus Kachi James Art Gallery has their full support. "We will establish more galleries because they will boost tourism and the economy by attracting visitors from different parts of the country and also boost the state' economy," she said. They will also serve as educational tools for the people and a way of preserving our Cultural heritage,". She noted that the government was doing even more in the tourism sector as plans are underway to have a film village and a museum where different art works will be displayed. Also speaking, the member representing Enugu West Senatorial District, Senator Osita Ngwu highlighted the private sector’s contribution to the development of arts in Nigeria. Senator Ngwu added that nations have achieved economic growth in various arts through the enormous contributions of the private sector. "I'm very happy with what I have seen today. Kachi James just showed the substance she's made of by bringing this art gallery to Enugu. It's a private initiative and I commend it completely. "This is what the Igbo call 'aku ruo ulo'; that's taking your wealth home to help empower your people. "I'm hoping that this gallery is going to motivate more youths, who have the talents for arts but lack the exposure such as this. With the number of arts enthusiasts that have trooped into this place to have a look at the colourful paintings, it gives the motivation that they can actually make a living from painting. "I commend Kachi James for this initiative which is a platform to motivate young artists. It's good to follow your dream and live it in all you do", he said. The Lawmaker, who expressed happiness with the contributions of the private sector players like Kachi James, said with the effort of the state government, and "the contributions of some of us in the legislature, there will be a paradigm shift for arts in Enugu and South-East". The event featured arts exhibitions, auctions, live art performances, dance presentations, sip and paint. https://journalist101.com/2023/10/08/kachi-james-arts-gallery-opens-in-enugu/

The people of Opi in Nsukka local government and Ekwegbe in Igboetiti local government in Enugu State on Friday, marched to the government House, Enugu to protest the continued detention of their son and lawyer, Barr. Onyekachi Ugwu in Enugu Correctional Service over alleged kidnapping. Barr. Ugwu who's from Opi community and the lawyer to Ekwegbe community has been in detention for over 3 months over his arrest and arraignment for cyberstalking the former secretary to the State Government, Dr. Dan Shere. It was gathered Ugwu was charged to a Magistrate Court in charge no CME/354c/23: COP v. Onyeka Ugwu on the 31/5/2023 which doesn't have the jurisdiction to entertain the charge in the first place. Efforts to secure his bail at the State High Court failed and same was taken to Federal High Court. The Federal high court fixed 18th July 2023 as a date to hear the motion on Ugwu's bail application but Dr. Shere raised another charge (MEN/208c/2023) on 17th July, 2023 (a day before the Federal high court date) stating that Ugwu kidnapped him (Shere) on 27th October, 2022. The production warrant for the kidnapping charges was fixed same day for hearing of Ugwu's bail application of the first charges at the Federal high court on 18th July, 2023 which frustrated the effort grant him bail. Worried by his continued detention without any charge as the Magistrate Court declined jurisdiction to try the new charges, the communities on Friday, 8th September, 2023, marched to the government House to seek the help of the Governor for the release of their son and lawyer. Addressing Journalists after submitting their petition to a representative of the Governor, the mother of the lawyer, Mrs. Monica Ugwu pleaded with Dr. Shere to bring whatever the matter is home to be resolved amicably and called on the government to come to her aid. Mrs. Ugwu who broke down in tears said: "My son who has been a great friend confidant of Dr. Shere has been in detention for 4 months. I don't know what went wrong and the brotherhood they shared was destroyed. "I've gone on my knees to beg Dr. Shere to please bring the matter home let us know what went wrong but he has ignored all my pleas." When asked what he was told her son did, the teary mother said "my son is a lawyer and they said he was offering legal services to the people of Ekwegbe and that was the problem. In the midst of that, we started hearing that he was involved in kidnapping. My son isn't a Kidnapper, he's lawyer and was contracted by Ekwegbe people. "He's a brother to Dan Shere, they're from the same village and community, the day they came to kill Onyeka was because he's standing with Dan and I don't know the cause of this misunderstanding between the two of them. "I'm on knees and begging the government and Dr. Shere to please come to my aid and let my son free. For over 4 months I haven't seen my son, the only thing I was told is that he's in a yard," Mrs. Ugwu stuttered while sobbing uncontrollably. Also speaking, Chief Fidelis Nweze from Ekwegbe community said they contracted Barr. Ugwu to help them secure their over 2,000 plots of land which they're at the risk of losing to some persons. "We're stranded because we don't know what's happening because we have always known Onyekachi and he can't be a kidnapper." Explaining the controversy surrounding the land, Chief Nweze said they never sold their land but went into an agreement with the owners of Winners Chapel to release the land to them for a University project. "Six villages in our community donated their lands to the church because we know of the enormous benefits a university will bring to our community. "We have lost the university because the church didn't come again to develop the land again as they promised and we're supposed to sit down with them and put the oral promises made to our people on paper as well as tidy the negotiations. "They promised to give our children Scholarship, make our son a member of the governing council of the University, give us a percentage of the work force for the junior cadre. They also promised to give the contract for the perimeter fencing to our people." He disclosed that the university never paid them for the land but made a monetary commitment to them which they said was a paltry sum because it's not enough to buy the land. Conclusively, he called on the Governor, Peter Mbah, whom he described as a listening leader to come to their aid and ensure the release of their lawyer and their land not encroached into. All efforts to contact Dr. Shere for comments failed as he's yet to respond to SMS sent to his mobile line.
