CHELSEA have flown Super Eagles midfielder Mikel Obi to Lagos in the club's private jet to enable him participate in the Confederation of African Football's (Caf) annual awards in which he has been shortlisted in the player of the year category. Due to his good form during the course of 2013 for club and country that resulted in Nigeria winning the African Cup of Nations, Mikel is one of three players listed for the Caf African Player of the Year award. Along with Ivorians Yaya Toure and Didier Drogba, Mikel is regarded as one of Africa's best three players last year. Tonight, at a glitzy ceremony in Lagos, the winner of the award will be announced and with Mikel having to be present, Chelsea have opted to fly him out there in the club's private jet and return him to London immediately after the ceremony. Given that Nigeria won the African Cup of Nations last year, Mikel is highly tipped to pick up the award this year. Mikel said: "I am coming for the Caf awards. I will be flown in and out of Nigeria by the Chelsea jet, arriving on the awards day and returning immediately after. "It is an honour to be selected and nominated for the award. I am looking forward to winning it for my country." Mikel's brothers Patrick Obi and Ebele Obi, who is a goalkeeper with Nigerian Premier League side Heartlands, will accompany him to the event. Nigeria's Sunday Mba has also been shortlisted in the African Footballer of the Year for players based in Africa award category. Also in the running for an accolade is Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi who has been shortlisted for the Coach of the Year award, as is Golden Eaglets coach Manu Garba, who won the U17 World Cup last year. Nigeria's Super Eagles have also been shortlisted in the National Team of the Year category, while the Golden Eaglets have been nominated for the Youth National Team of the Year. Golden Eaglets playmaker Kelechi Iheanacho has also been listed in the Most Promising Talent category, while the Nigerian Supporters Club is up for the Fair Play Award. A Nigerian last won the African Player of the Year in 199 when Nwankwo Kanu picked up the award. http://www.nigerianwatch.com/sport/3587-chelsea-fly-mikel-to-lagos-by-private-jet-for-african-player-of-the-award-ceremony

FORMER Liverpool legend John Aldridge has warned Super Eagles winger Victor Moses to get his act together of face the prospect of having his loan deal with the club terminated and sent packing. Moses, 23, joined Liverpool on a season-long loan deal in September and it had been expected that he would become another Anfield wonder. However, since arriving from Chelsea, Moses has featured very little for Liverpool despite the club's spate of injuries and when his does play, his performance has been questionable. Last Sunday, Moses had another terrible outing during an FA Cup tie against Oldham which Liverpool won 2-0. Putting in what was seen as a lethargic and non-committal performance, Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers substituted Moses at half time. Writing in the Liverpool Echo, former Reds striker John Aldridge said he believes that Moses needs to improve his attitude or risk having his loan-deal terminated and sent back to Chelsea. Using his column at the newspaper to air his views, Mr Aldridge said he feels that Moses may be taking his stay at Liverpool for granted. Singling out Moses’ performance against Oldham Athletic on Sunday, Mr Aldridge said the player showed no heart and passion on the pitch. He added: "Victor Moses was handed a big opportunity when Brendan Rodgers brought him to Liverpool FC from Chelsea last summer as not many players get the chance to go out on loan to a bigger club but I don’t think he realises how lucky he is. “The Nigeria international could have no complaints about being hauled off at half-time of Sunday’s 2-0 win over Oldham. He looked completely disinterested in that opening 45 minutes and gave the manager little option. “There was no desire, no spirit. Maybe he’s lacking a bit of confidence or maybe he’s just unhappy because he’s played so little recently." According to Mr Aldridge, Moses did not appear to be in the right frame of mind and it might have been an error to invite him to the club. He added that if Moses wants to stay at Liverpool until the end of the season then he needs to buck his ideas up. Mr Aldridge added: “When Moses arrived I thought he would be a decent acquisition as he did very well for Wigan and did okay during his first year at Chelsea. He talked about wanting to nail down a place at Anfield but to achieve that you need to deliver on the pitch and he hasn’t done that. “Hindsight is a great thing but we would have been better off keeping Oussama Assaidi and not signing Moses. Assaidi has contributed a lot more for Stoke during his loan spell than Moses has for us" Adding that Moses has let himself down since joining Liverpool, Mr Aldridge said it might be an idea to see if Chelsea will take the player back. He added he feels so strongly about the Moses issue that he thinks Liverpool should investigate the possibility of trying to cancel the loan deal. “I don’t know whether Chelsea would agree to take him back as they’ve got a big squad but it might be in everyone’s best interests if the loan is cancelled. He has let himself down,” Mr Aldridge added. Moses is a vital member of Nigeria's Super Eagles squad and is certain to feature in the World Cup later this summer. However, he needs to get regular action be in good shape for the tournament. |
Middlesbrough have confirmed the arrival of the Chelsea's Nigerian international defender Kenneth Omeruo on loan until the end of the season. Boro boss Aitor Karanka confirmed after Saturday's FA Cup loss to Hall City that he was closing in on Omeruo, and now he has finalized a deal. The 20-year-old, who can play at center-back, is yet to make his debut for Chelsea but he has 14 caps for Nigeria. "Kenneth is a strong defender and I think we need to improve in this area," said Karanka. "I know him Jose (Mourinho) and has told me about him and I think he's going to be very good for us to add to the squad." Omeruo is now set to go straight into Boro's squad for this weekend's clash at Blackpool. http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/25604424 |

Mario Balotelli’s agent has opened the door to a potential reunion with Jose Mourinho at Chelsea. The AC Milan striker has been making waves in Serie A and has recently returned from a three-match ban for making insulting and intimidating comments towards a referee. The latest controversy has once again raised questions over Balotelli’s future, and his agent, Mino Raiola, has indicated Stamford Bridge could be a viable destination for the Italia, who previously enjoyed a successful relationship with Mourinho at Inter Milan. ‘Balotelli and [Chelsea boss] Jose Mourinho could be reunited because they know each other and they didn’t leave each other with hate,’ Raiola told Tiki Taka on Italia 1. ‘There was a not very nice incident between them, but they parted company on good terms. ‘They have remained in contact and there is mutual respect. ‘I know Milan Vice-President Adriano Galliani will not agree, but Mario is a great striker. That is for certain and he could perhaps be that at Chelsea.’ Raiola’s snipe at Galliani comes after the Milan chief dismissed comments from the agent that Balotelli would not see out his career at the San Siro. The former Manchester City striker is contracted to Milan until 2017. http://hereisthecity.com/en-gb/2013/10/29/agent-balotelli-could-join-chelsea/#
