PoliticsRainstorm Destroys 200 Houses In Sabongari, Zaria by KoboUP(op): 10:57pm On Sep 26, 2015
Rainstorm on Saturday destroyed no fewer than 200 residential houses and shops in Zaria City and parts of Sabon-Gari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The storm also destroyed electric installations and brought down trees to block some streets.

The areas worse hit are Sabon-gari, Samaru, Danmagaji, Wusasa, Kofar Gayan Low Cost Housing Estate and parts of Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic temporary site, among others.

A NAN correspondent, who visited the affected areas, saw residents trying to salvage some items, while the debris of destroyed structures were being cleared.

Efforts to speak with the Interim Management Committee Chairman of Zaria Local Government Council, Alhaji Ja’afaru Abbas, were not successful but a top official of the council, confirmed the extensive damage by the storm.

“We have been trying to see how we can assist the victims,” the official said, pleading anonymity.

A cross-section of victims who were interviewed, expressed shock over the incident, describing it as the worst in the past 10 years.

One of the victims, Malam Sani Aliyu, described the development as “the will of God Almighty” that no human could have stopped”.

He appealed to the relevant authorities to come to their aid to cushion the effect of the rainstorm.

Another victim, Alhaji Ilyas Is’haq of Sabongari, said that the disaster came at a time when people had no money at hand, hence the need for the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency, to urgently assist the victims.

Malam Mamman Magaji of Wusasa, said that the entire roof of his house was removed, while part of the fence covering the house was also brought down.

Most of the victims are low-income earners, struggling to meet the basic challenges of life.

CelebritiesDrake Reveals Why He Remixed Wizkid’s Ojuelegba by KoboUP(op): 2:39pm On Sep 26, 2015
Canadian hip-hop star Drake recently spoke for the first time why he jumped on the surprise remix for Wizkid’s Ojuelegba a few months back.

During his interview for the 100th issue of FADER Magazine, Drizzy was asked if part of his motivation was a desire to build audiences in foreign markets, to become a truly global star, having already conquered North America.

Drake who was not into the theory, said: “I just did it because I was in the moment”.

“I wasn’t thinking like, ‘Oh man, I gotta get my brand up in Nigeria,” he said.

He concluded with politeness: “Not to say that’s not important. I’m super-honored to be on that song.”

PoliticsPowerful Nigerians Trying To Sabotage War Against Boko Haram by KoboUP(op): 12:08pm On Sep 26, 2015
Nigerian Army has warned those it described as “unscrupulous individuals and their cohorts” specifically in Borno State and the North East in general against activities that may scuttle the ongoing battle against Boko Haram insurgents.

The Army made this warning in a statement of Friday, the same day it announced that that over 200 members of the Boko Haram terrorists’ sect surrendered themselves to the Nigerian troops in strategic and economic important town of Banki, Borno State.

In the statement signed by acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Sani Usman, the military warns that some unnamed individuals and groups are working to reverse the gains made in the battle against terrorism with a view to scuttle troops’ efforts of achieving the Presidential directive to defeat Boko Haram terrorists within three months.

Usman who was not specific on the activities being carried out which the military deemed inimical to the war against terror however said the unnamed “unscrupulous but powerful individuals” are enlisting the services of some Non-Governmental Organizations in the grand design.

In his words: “It has come to our knowledge that they are employing every means to see that our operation does not succeed in order for them to continue to enjoy certain benefits.

“It has been revealed that they are employing the services of marabouts and other unethical means in order to frustrate our efforts and the operations in addition to campaign of calumny.

“We are aware of their clandestine meetings and other diabolical efforts to achieve their nefarious aims. This would not be tolerated. Therefore, such individuals and groups should be warned in unmistakable terms that anyone found would be dealt with accordingly.

“People should place the interest of the nation above any personal gain or ambition. The continued loss of lives and properties in this country through terrorists’ activities does no one any good,” Usman said.

On the capture of Banki town, Usman said over 200 members Boko Haram surrendered to the Nigerian troops during the exercise on Thursday.

Usman said, “Nigerian troops have yesterday captured the economic important and strategic town of Banki in Borno State which is equally noted for fishing.

“Major economic and trading activities between Nigeria, Cameroon and Central African countries takes place in Banki town.

“During the previous encounter Nigerian troops not only recapture the town, but several Boko Haram terrorists were captured alive while the stubborn terrorist armed militants who refused to surrender where killed in the military offensive

PoliticsAdamawa To Pay Workers’ Outstanding Entitlements After Sallah by KoboUP(op): 8:48am On Sep 23, 2015

Kaibo, who noted that the state government, so far, owed the civil servants about N1.6 billion, added that apart from the payment of the outstanding allowances, the state government had improved its relationship with the civil servants through training and retraining, such that, so far, about 8,000 workers had benefitted from the programme.

PoliticsEx-service Chiefs Facing Court-martial, If Indicted Arms’ Purchase Probe by KoboUP(op): 11:24am On Sep 21, 2015
Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan’s service chiefs, who were removed by President Muhammadu Buhari in July, may be court-martialed if indicted in the ongoing probe into arms’ purchase initiated by the Federal Government.

Those who could be court-martialed, if found guilty, are former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh; former Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Kenneth Minimah; former Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Usman Jibrin and former Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Vice Marshal Adesola Amosu. Shortly after their removal from office, Buhari had named a 13-member panel to probe arms procurement between 2007 and 2015.

However, It was gathered from a top military source that Badeh and others could be recommended for court-martial if the probe panel, at the end of its investigations, found them guilty on any of the allegations.

The source said by virtue of the Armed Forces Act, the former service chiefs might be subjected to military rules in view of the fact that the probe into their tenure was initiated less than three months after they left office.

He, however, added that it is only a court or tribunal of competent jurisdiction that can pronounce a man guilty of any offence, as Nigeria’s jurisprudence is “accusatorial” and not “inquisitorial”.

The source said: “By my understanding of the Armed Forces Act, I think in the event of an indictment of the immediate past service chiefs by the committee probing arms procurement under them and their predecessors from 2007, they can be tried by a court-martial, if so recommended. “Whatever offence is being alleged, was committed while in service, and was not barred by time, since in this case, the probe was ordered within the three months’ time frame, for military rule to apply.”

When reminded that they have left office, and so, may not be bound by military rules, he said: “The issue of it being statute- barred, does not arise, in my humble view.

“Court-martial would not apply, if the probe was initiated after three months of their removal, but as you know, they left in July, and the investigative panel, was constituted by Mr. President in August; an interval of one month.

“Again, let me stress that my position is neither judgmental nor preemptive; it is devoid of all ill-intentions.

“They did their best in the face of the Boko Haram insurgency, they remain innocent retired senior officers, until otherwise proven by a court of competent jurisdiction.”

It was also gathered that some of the former service chiefs, whose tenures are being probed might have agreed to return money running into billions of naira.

Besides, the Federal Government may have initiated moves to reclaim “a very large housing estate belonging to one of the former service chiefs, in addition to a very large expanse of land in a barracks, which name I will not mention.”

Car TalkNissan Gripz Concept by KoboUP(op): 12:40pm On Sep 20, 2015
https://www.koboup.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/wpid-screenshot_2015-09-19-22-57-00-11.jpg
Take a look at this sporty-looking Nissan Gripz crossover SUV which was unveiled at Frankfurt this week. Featuring gigantic 22-inch wheels and scissor doors, we think this crossover looks perfectly bonkers!

Nissan are branding the Gripz as ‘a new breed of sporty compact crossover for a new, younger generation.’ In fairness to them, a 17 year old sixth-former will adore it with cascading roofline and garish wheels.
https://www.koboup.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/wpid-screenshot_2015-09-19-22-56-49-21.jpg
Whatever you think of it, we think we can all agree it’s certainly adventurous. The Gripz was inspired by classic desert rally cars and racing bicycles after all, with Nissan specifically naming the original Z car, the 240Z, as its main source material. Which we thoroughly approve of, by the way!

The concept features a carbon frame with some carbon elements exposed though the body. There are nods throughout to previous Nissans too, such as the 2020 Vision Gran Turismo and Sway Concept, particularly in the imposing V-motif grille and rectangular lamps at the front end.
https://www.koboup.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/wpid-screenshot_2015-09-19-22-56-55-11.jpg
The Gripz has a 2+2 interior layout but is still most definitely a sports car with plenty of carbon fibre, metal and aluminium exposure, as well as a bike-inspired centre console on the synthetic leather seats. A three-spoke retro steering wheel also evokes thoughts of the iconic 240Z.

The Nissan Gripz is equipped with an EV technology hybrid system called ‘Pure Drive e-Power’. Under the bonnet it uses the same petrol engine used in the Nissan Leaf. This configuration delivers an apparently smooth, swift and linear acceleration in near-silence.
https://www.koboup.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/wpid-screenshot_2015-09-19-22-56-49-11.jpg
The huge three-spoke, 22-inch carbon fibre wheels and enormous scissor doors are most probably going to remain purely a fantasy, unfortunately, with no official plans to put the Gripz into production. But it still showcases where Nissan, being the pioneer of the crossover, could take the segment next.

CelebritiesEx-police Officer Claims He Was Paid $1.5 Million To Fake Tupac’s Death by KoboUP(op): 10:33am On Sep 20, 2015
Retired police officer David Myers, who is in a critical medical condition in hospital, said that Tupac might still be alive.

He claims that he was paid $1.5 million to help the star fake his own death.

Tupac Shakur died on September 7, 1996, when he was 25-year-old after being hit in a drive-by shooting at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Koval Lane in Las Vegas, Nevada.

He had been at the Mike Tyson vs Bruce Sheldon boxing match and been involved in a altercation with gang member Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson.

Myers now wants the world to know the truth and from his death bed – he said: “The world needs to know what I did. I’m ashamed that I let a price be put on my word and I cannot die without letting the world know.”

He also claimed that Suge Knight, who is currently in jail awaiting trial for murder, played a big part in in Tupac disappearance.

Including police, over 30 people were reportedly paid to help fake his death, medics and various witnesses.

He claims 2Pac paid $50,000 for a body double to be taken to the morgue.

CelebritiesNollywood Actresses Don’t Sleep Around Says Doris Simeon by KoboUP(op): 9:50pm On Sep 18, 2015
Nollywood Actresses Don’t Sleep Around! –Doris Simeon

Pretty actress and producer, Doris Simeon chatted with YES INTERNATIONAL! Magazine recently and has this to say to Nigerians that believe Nollywood actresses sleep around and that’s why they don’t have husbands. Excerpts…

What can you say about the promiscuous impression the society has about actresses and female entertainers?

I will say that the impression is wrong and it’s a big lie. But it’s a free world and if you want to, you will. It’s a thing of choice. But that doesn’t mean that the whole women in the industry sleep around, and that’s why they are not getting married.

There are so many people out there who live their lives the way they want. How many do you hear about? But because we are the faces out there, everybody believes that we don’t have a private life anymore and everything that happens in our lives, they have to know about it. As if they knew when you were born. It’s just one of the things we face for being actresses.

It’s like your profession attracts the wrong kind of men?

Even if it brings the wrong men to you, it is still a thing of choice. You decide what you want and it is what you want that will happen.

So, what’s the hardest decision that you’ve made as an actress?

I’ve not really thought about it. Maybe trying to fix two jobs the same day. I was just gisting with one of my colleagues there about fixing three jobs the same day and they were calling me. I didn’t even know what to do in order not to offend anybody.

An actress told me that actresses don’t make so much money and that contradicts what they depict on the social media. What can you say about that?

I would say maybe because of piracy, that is why she said that. We don’t have a fixed price. When you are contracted for a job, you negotiate, if you agree, you do it. You don’t have people competing in the industry.

EducationJAMB: ASUP Rejects Lower Cut Off For Poly Students by KoboUP(op): 9:39pm On Sep 18, 2015
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), on Thursday, took a critical look at the state of polytechnic education and demanded for higher cut-off marks for any candidate aspiring to get admission into polytechnics across the country.

The union frowned at the lower cut-off mark prescribed for candidates seeking polytechnic admission compared to their university counterparts, and declared that the situation is no longer acceptable to the union.

It further described the discriminatory admission cut-off mark between polytechnics and universities by the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) as totally unacceptable, saying the disparity of the policy makes polytechnics as undesirable destinations for pursuit of tertiary education.

Addressing a press conference at the Labour House, Abuja, President of ASUP, Comrade Chibuzo Asomugha, insisted that candidates seeking to be admitted into the polytechnics should be placed on the same benchmark as their counterparts.

He said: “The admission policy of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, which profiles polytechnics as undesirable destinations for pursuit of tertiary education, is absurd and unfortunate.

“The policy has failed to understand that polytechnic education is an aptitude-determined choice of the candidate and not a cesspool of desperation. Candidates who sit for matriculation examinations into tertiary institutions deserve equal treatment.

“The situation where candidates sit for the same examination but are allocated discriminatory cut-off points into the universities, polytechnics and colleges of education respectively shall no longer be accepted by our union.

“Candidates seeking to be admitted into the polytechnics should be placed on the same benchmark as their counterparts. This is to breach public perception which places our sector as inferior or incapable of competing with the best in terms of service delivery.”

The ASUP president also decried the neglect of the polytechnic sector; regretting that more than one year after the union suspended its strike action, which was necessitated by failure of government to address critical problems facing the sector, majority of the issues remain unresolved.

Comrade Asomugha: “Our union had in 2012 drawn the attention of government to very critical needs of polytechnics in the country. Upon repeated reminders and as a result of deliberate failure by government to attend to these needs, our union embarked on a protracted strike from October 2013 to July, 2014.

“When the strike was suspended, the issues at stake were not sufficiently tackled by government. We suspended the strike because of the exigencies of the moment and in order to provide the necessary space for government to address them.

“Today, over 85 per cent of these problems are still pending and we are compelled to bring them to the attention of the present administration driven by the hope that the government will bring to bear on these issues the same seriousness and passion for excellence it has approached national development.”

He listed some of the outstanding issues to include, review of the Polytechnic Act; Needs assessment and funding of public polytechnics; dichotomy between HND and degree graduates, non-implementation of CONTISS 15 migration for the lower cadres and 7 per cent academic allowances.

Others include lopsidedness in funds disbursement and intervention by TETFUND; non-establishment of the National Commission for Polytechnic (NCP).

Also speaking on the implementation of the Treasury Single Account (TSA), he stated that though ASUP recognises government’s intention, he appealed that the implementation of the TSA should take into consideration the peculiarities of tertiary education institutions.

He said: “The tertiary sub-sector is purely service-oriented and its revenue is specifically tied to the daily running of the institutions and for the provisions of consumables needed for teaching and learning. The TSA, though well intended will tie down the processes of provision of daily needs of the institutions and therefore hamper efficient service delivery.

“As well, if strictly applied in its present format, the full operations of tertiary education institutions will be greatly hampered with regard to service delivery, personnel mobility, and global aspirations.”

PoliticsKatsina Flood Kills 2, Displaced 3,620 by KoboUP(op): 8:16pm On Sep 18, 2015
No fewer than three persons were reported dead while 3,620 others were displaced by flood in some parts of Katsina State in the last two months.

Alhaji Ibrahim Abdulkarim, the Acting Executive Director of the Katsina State Emergency Management Agency, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Katsina.

Abdulkarim said the flood disasters were recorded in 15 Local Government Areas of the state.

He said the local governments seriously affected were Baure, Bindawa, Charanchi, Daura, Dutsi and Dandume.

Others were Ingawa, Kusada, Katsina, Malumfashi, Matazu, Mai’adua Musawa, Sandamu and Zango.

Abdulkarim said the state government has established camps for Internally Displaced Persons and victims of the flood in the state.

He said NEMA had distributed relief materials loaded in 11 trucks to the flood victims in the affected local government areas.

The director said SEMA had embarked on aggressive enlightenment campaign to warn the public against construction of houses on waterways, blockage of drains and dumping of refuse indiscriminately.

Abdulkarim also said ecological committee was constituted in each local government to work with traditional institutions towards creating awareness on flood issue.

He urged the government to review the environmental laws to conform to the reality of the present day situation.

“Some of the laws were lighter to the extent that the offenders will not feel any impact of the fine, if found guilty,” he said.

He also appealed to the public to desist from constructing houses on swampy areas, waterways and dumping of refuse on the drainage as part of measures to avert flood disaster.

Fashion5 Awesome Traditional Nigerian Hairstyles That Rock! by KoboUP(op): 7:58pm On Sep 18, 2015
5 awesome traditional Nigerian hairstyles that rock!ck! that rock![/b]

A woman’s hair is her crowning glory and the way it is styled says a lot about her.

Although men often complain about their wives spending hours at the salon, most women understand the need to look good in the eyes of their husbands so as to keep him from gawking at some other lady in their absence. As a result, ladies are getting creative with their manes so as to stay sexy and trendy.

While the hair industry continues to rake in billions of dollars each year ($684 billion according to Mintel), a sustained decline in the affinity for traditional African hairstyles has been recorded. In spite of this downward trend, many Nigerian women still wear the local patterns with pride as it gives them a sense of identity and is less expensive than the contemporary fringe, braid and ponytail.

Clap-your-hands
Popularly called Patewo which literarily means clap-your-hands, this is a hairstyle woven in the shape of two hands clasped together; more like placing the palms together to say the lord’s prayer. Rather than having hair weaved to the back, the shaft is entwined at the middle in order to take a firm shape. There are different styles for this hair which include front, back and double patewo.

Suku
Like the All-Back which is weaved towards the rear of the head, Suku is oftentimes plaited with the wefts pointing to the sky. Depending on the dexterity of the stylist, it can be shaped in such a way that it does not look tattered or scattered. It is a beautiful hairstyle

Hair Plaited
with thread Using a thread to plait your hair may be old fashion however, the style is still in vogue among women who are trying to grow their hair and children of school age. Depending on the individual wearing the hairstyle, they can add a touch of class by making it fashionable with fancy coloured threads and ringlets.

All Back
This is referred to as Kolese in Yoruba. It is one of the simplest traditional hairstyles among Nigerian women. As the name implies, all the hair strands are plaited backwards after they are separated into tiny rows with a sharp object and the end point depend on how long the hair is.

Fulani Hairstyle
The Fulani hairstyle is an artistic and flamboyant hairdo adorned by Fulani women from Northern Nigeria-Katsina, Kano and Niger. The hair is long, part plaited and decorated with beads. Due to its durable nature, Fulani women favour this fashion as it complements their nomadic tendencies.

PoliticsFrance Pledges Weapons And Intelligence For Nigeria’s Insurgency war by KoboUP(op): 11:07pm On Sep 15, 2015
French President François Hollande has pledged to assist the Multinational Joint Task Force (MJTF) with intelligence gathering and equipment to check the activities of insurgents in Nigeria and beyond.

Mr. Hollande announced this on Monday at the Élysée Palace in Paris after a closed-door bilateral meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, who is on a three-day official visit to France.

The French president, who was addressing a joint news conference with President Buhari, said his government was concerned about the increasing spate of insecurity in Nigeria and the entire West African sub-region.

According to him, his administration was ready to render support and assistance to Nigeria to enable the country tackle insurgency and all forms of extremism in the country.

He said himself and Mr. Buhari discussed new strategies of partnership that would enable Nigeria and its neighbouring countries of Cameroun, Chad, Niger and Benin Republic, through the joint action of the MJTF, fight the insurgency and restore peace.

Mr. Hollande explained that as an intervention approach to assist in the fight against terrorism, France, last year, hosted a Regional Summit on Security in Paris, which brought together the neighbouring countries to chart the way forward.

“We provide all of the support to the countries in the region which are affected by this cult and in Nigeria, we want to provide support and solidarity,” he added.

He thanked Mr. Buhari for his recent actions such as the movement of the military command centre to Maiduguri, which he said, had helped tremendously in weakening the insurgents.

According to Mr. Hollande, France has concluded arrangements to invest 130 million euro in the development of infrastructure in Nigeria for rebuilding of roads, provision of electricity and water supply.

He noted that in spite of the fall in the price of crude oil in the international market, which had affected Nigerian expected revenue, the country’s economy still remained strong.

“The Nigerian economy remains strong, so France wants to be doing business in the country,’’ he said.

Mr. Hollande also said that France intended to increase the visibility of its investors more in Nigeria.

In his remarks, Mr. Buhari thanked the French president for his administration’s intention to assist Nigeria.

He expressed the readiness of his administration to partner with France for the overall development of both countries.

President Buhari noted that with commitment from France, Nigeria’s next shopping list regarding support would move to other members of the G7.

“We have to depend on France and the other G7 countries for support to fight piracy,” he said. Our next shopping list is going to G7 in terms of intelligence and training.

“Another problem is the problem in the Gulf of Guinea, from Senegal to Angola; that area is endowed with resources like petroleum and other minerals but surrounded by piracy and theft.

“We are going to depend on France and G7 countries to flush these criminals out of the region,” the Nigerian leader said.

On Nigeria’s problems, Mr. Buhari lamented that more than 67 per cent of youth were unemployed.

“We are finding best way in agriculture and mining to address this challenge before sophisticated infrastructure and security are provided.

“We want to make sure we feed ourselves and provide security before other things are also tackled,” Mr. Buhari said.

Art, Graphics & VideoCheckout This Instant Printing Camera- Polaroid Snap by KoboUP(op): 11:13pm On Sep 12, 2015
https://www.koboup.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/polaroid-snap-colours.jpg
Polaroid seem to evoke notions of retro and nostalgia quite like no other brand. However, bringing an undoubtedly iconic but still dated concept into the 21st century is no easy task. But Polaroid are giving it a go and have announced the latest addition to their digital camera range with the Polaroid Snap!

The Polaroid Snap delivers the instant simplicity and spontaneity that is synonymous with the brand with a pocket-sized camera which enables Joes to easily print physical photos at the push of a button, while saving their digital image for easy uploading to a computer and any social media platform.
https://www.koboup.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/polaroid-snap-instant-digital-camera.jpg
The Polaroid Snap, first and foremost, is a 10MP digital instant camera that comes with all the capabilities of one. There’s loads of different capturing modes, including colour, black and white and a vintage Polaroid photo inspired mode.

The camera also features a photo booth mode, which takes six quick pictures in ten seconds, as well as a self-timer feature, so you can capture that perfect selfie. The Snap comes with a Micro SD card slot that holds up to 32GB and you can easily transfer and upload images to your computer, cloud service or social media platform.

But this is a Polaroid, so you’ll also be able to do some instant printing too using ZINK Zero Ink Printing Technology. Joes can instantly print full colour, 2 x 3 inch prints as soon as the image is taken. The prints are ready in just under a minute and thanks to its quick print abilities, you can shoot new images even while the Polaroid Snap is printing.

The look of the Polaroid Snap instant camera is suitably minimalist to keep in line with Polaroid’s previous offerings and we love it for it. The Snap will come in Blue, Red and Black options, but we think you’d have to be pretty unhinged not to go with the classic White!

While no official date has been set yet, the Polaroid Snap instant digital camera will be available by the end of this year and will set Joes back around N30,000.

Crime8 Arrested Over Alleged Plan To Bomb Abuja Sallah Day by KoboUP(op): 10:58pm On Sep 12, 2015
The Nigerian military has arrested eight suspects over alleged plan to bomb the capital city, Abuja, during the forth coming Sallah celebration scheduled for Thursday, September 24, 2015.

The suspects were arrested by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) when they sneaked into the FCT to perfect and execute the heinous crime.

Though the identity of the suspects were not revealed, a source told LEADERSHIP the DIA has already taken the eight men into custody and are currently undergoing screening and interrogation, adding that useful information is being extracted from the suspects.

The Nigeria’s capital of Abuja had in the past come under several bomb attacks, mostly carried out by the dreaded Boko Haram group which has claimed responsibility.

No less than 30,000 lives with properties worth billions of naira have been lost to the dastard acts of this group of terrorists.

Some of the places attacked by the terrorist group includes the United Nations country office in Abuja, the headquarters of the Nigeria Police, Emab Plaza located in Wuse 2, Nyanya motor park, as well as the popular Abacha barracks, all within the Federal Capital Territory.

PoliticsPoverty Has A Bold Northern Face Says Shettima by KoboUP(op): 10:05pm On Sep 12, 2015
The Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) yesterday lamented that poverty within the northern region has assumed an alarming rate requiring an urgent attention.

The forum also stated that the northern region has become a thriving nest for war, terrorism, deep-seated social divisions, senseless violence, mind-boggling intolerance, injustice, destitution, joblessness, and all manners of other social vices.

The chairman of the forum and Borno State governor Kashim Shettima stated this in his address at the maiden edition of the meeting at the Hassan Katsina State House, Kaduna.

According to Shettima, “Things have become so bad, so much so that we can say without fear of contradiction that in Nigeria today, poverty glaringly wears a bold northern face. We have turned our region into a laughing stock, derided by friends and foes alike, and, not without justification, as having dragged the rest of the country down with us.

“Regrettably today, our region has become a thriving nest for war, terrorism, deep seated social divisions, senseless violence, mind-boggling intolerance, injustice, destitution, joblessness, and all manners of other social vices, the height of which is the madness called Boko Haram.

“No amount of lamentation will, of course, solve our many problems. We need to act, and fast too. This generation of Northern leaders, led by us the Governors, have both a moral and constitutional responsibility as well as a historic opportunity to reverse the negative fortunes of our people.

“We must do everything in our power to restore and entrench the lofty values of unity, understanding, tolerance, mutual respect, empathy, justice and mutual coexistence in the minds of our people and region. We must firmly and decisively commit ourselves to fighting poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, terrorism and other forms violent crimes in the north.”

“I dare say that there is no better time to do that than now, when a sequence of events over the last few months is showing that a silver lining is beginning to appear in the dark clouds that have hovered over the North for so long.

“I urge us to take full advantage of this development and dedicate ourselves to, beginning from this meeting and within the shortest possible time, developing a comprehensive blueprint that will take our region and its long suffering people out of the woods.

“I solemnly enjoin all of us to put our heads down, get to work and come up with an agenda for the speedy transformation of Northern Nigeria from its current travails into a well modern, well developed, prosperous, progressive, just and united polity for the good of its people and the entire Nigeria.”

He emphasised that the meeting which is the first major meeting he is presiding as chairman is also the first time “since 2013 crisis that nearly tore the Forum apart and permanently damage it.

“Thirdly and more significantly, this meeting is coming at critical time in the history of Northern Nigeria when we appear to be on the cusp of a new era; the promise of a transition from seemingly interminable years of hardship, poverty and turmoil – the proverbial Locust Years – to a period of hope, prosperity and calm.

“For the first time since the early 1980s, the political leadership of the Northern states seem poised to reverse the negative trends that had so readily sown the destructive seed of mutual suspicion, distrust and animosity among the teeming people that occupy the vast lands of of our states. I can see the signs of sincere effort and genuine optimism to draw strength in our diversity and change the narrative of our troubled history in the interest of our region’s history, and indeed, the rest of Nigeria.

“As leaders of our people at this crucial epoch of our history, and democratically elected ones at that, we are left with no choice but to rise up to the occasion and live up to people’s perfectly understandable expectations. We must seize this moment, for history is beckoning at us.

“The first generation of Northern leaders -May God Almighty bless them –bequeathed to us a polity, though vast in land mass and complex in its diversity, that showed enormous promise, and was indeed beginning to live to that promise: A polity where the social mantra was unity in diversity, where justice, fairness and equity reigned, where exemplary peaceful coexistence was the order of the day.

“Not only did succeeding generations of leaders including – sadly – our own, fail to sustain the benchmark handed over by our heroes, they let things to progressively and rapidly deteriorate, in the process exhibiting base irresponsibility of the worst kind. Thus, from those dizzying heights of the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s when the North was the cynosure, if not the envy, of all eyes, we plunged to the nadir of the social ladder.

“On my part, I promise, as Chairman of this important Forum, to do everything humanly possible to ensure unity and purposefulness in our ranks by running an open and democratic system and by carrying everybody along. I promise to do my best, and with your support, understanding and cooperation, to transform this forum from a mere talk shop into an action-oriented and agenda setting platform in the interest of all our 19 Northern states and, by extension, Nigeria as whole.”

HealthOver 3.4m Nigerians Infected By HIV/AIDS In 2014 – UNAIDS by KoboUP(op): 9:47pm On Sep 12, 2015
The United Nations AIDS Programme (UNAIDS) has said a total of 3.4 million Nigerians were infected with HIV/AIDS in 2014, with women accounting for 58 per cent of the number.

UNAIDS Country Director, Mr. Bilali Kamara, said this yesterday when he paid a courtesy call on the leader of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, in Abuja.

He said a total of 124,000 children also suffered from the scourge through mother- to-child transmission or contaminated blood.

Briefing Gbajabiamila on the spread of the disease, the country director said the trend had put Nigeria on the scale of nations that need to do more to curb the scourge of HIV/AIDS.

He said: “What is important for us to let you know is that despite the success stories recorded in the past, we still need to double our efforts in the fight to mitigate the negative effects by collaborating and coordinating efforts by all stakeholders.

“We as Africans have a responsibility to take up the global initiative on Aids for the benefit of our people. Domestic resources have proved inadequate to match the global drive for eradication of the disease.

“We must make sure that investment in coming from outside is matched with what we are making inside as Africans.”

EventsNigeria To Experience Lunar Eclipse, Sep 28 by KoboUP(op): 8:51pm On Sep 11, 2015
The National Space Research and Development Agency has said there will be a lunar eclipse on September 28 which will be observed in Nigeria.

In a statement signed by its Deputy Director of Media and Corporate Communications, Felix Ale, the agency said the lunar eclipse would begin on Monday, September 28 from 1:11am, and will be at its maximum by 3:47am, with its final contact at 6:22am.

A lunar eclipse is an astronomical event that occurs when the earth comes in-between the sun and the moon, and the earth casts its shadow on the moon, so that the moon appears reddish.

The lunar eclipse, which is also called the blood moon, will be observed in some regions around the world.

“Some of the regions seeing at least some parts of the eclipse include, Europe, South/East Asia, Africa, much of North America, much of South America, Pacific, Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Arctic, and Antarctica,” the statement said.

The lunar eclipse, according to the agency, will be viewed in Nigeria especially in locations with the absence of cloud cover.

“Nigerians are advised not to panic, and to go about their normal activities as it is just an astronomical event which will last for 5 hours 11 minutes,” the statement said.

RomanceReasons Why You Should Try Inter-tribal Marriage In Nigeria by KoboUP(op): 7:11pm On Sep 11, 2015
There are more than 250 ethnic groups in Nigeria. Each of these tribal leanings are rich in values, beliefs, tradition and culture.

However, these groups are restricted to a particular region; the Igbos dominate the southeast-Anambra, Yorubas, southwest-Ogun and Hausas, the north-Katsina, and these regional boundaries are reflected in the way members of each tribe choose their spouses.

While inter-tribal marriages can encourage Nigerians to cherish their heterogeneous ancestry, these type of unions is a rare occurrence.

In spite of the seeming doubt many have about inter-tribal marriages, some people have ventured into this uncharted territory successfully.

Love

Love conquers all things. It can make individuals embark on incredulous journeys and come back with the unexpected. It makes people blind to the erroneous perception that the Ijebu man is greedy and the Igbo lady loves money. Love is blind to all these. This is an ultimate reason why Nigerians go on idyllic adventures to other tribes to pick a significant other to the amazement of their parents.

Unity

The slithering division between different ethnic nationalities is obvious at nearly all spheres of our national engagements. From appointments to infrastructure distribution and employment, disparities over the quota system which allows for equanimity among regions have been a contentious debate. Increasing inter-tribal marriages will pale these differences among people and collapse the existing barriers. It will promote unity and the successes of these marriages will encourage more empathy and accelerated growth among people.

Cultural Exchange

The impact of inter-tribal marriages can be felt in the cultural exchanges and interactions between families. If the fiancé is Igbo and the fiancée is Hausa, the man from the eastern part of the country will brush himself up on Hausa culture and come to appreciate their beliefs, values and traditions and vice-versa. This is essentially poignant in a clime where elders are treated with reverence as it will be an embarrassment if each spouse cannot greet their parents-in-law in each other’s native dialect.

Preserve Nigerian Languages

Many Nigerians are concerned about the decline in local languages. But the question is how can this nosedive be halted? Inter-tribal marriages are a viable option to turn to. If the couple can speak each other’s language. They can pass the heritage to their children by speaking it to them, enriching their minds with expansive psyche on the eclectic nature of the motherland.

Experience Nigeria’s Diversity

The beauty of Nigeria’s diversity is remarkable. To experience this diversity in terms of culinary, festivals, beliefs, values and attitudes be open to spending your life with a partner from a tribe different from yours and you will appreciate the nation’s beauty much more.
