A blast ripped through a police
car outside a Catholic church
in the southern Philippines late
Saturday, authorities said,
wounding 13 people including
a police officer.
The explosion hit churchgoers
attending a series of
Christmas Eve masses at the
Archdiocesan Shrine of Santo
Nino in the farming town of
Midsayap, a priest who
present at the service said.
“The communion was ongoing
when the explosion took
place,” Father Jay Virador told
reporters.
The blast occurred about 30
metres (98 feet) away from
the church’s entrance and
caused panic, he added.
The regional police
spokesman, Superintendent
Romeo Galgo, confirmed the
blast which he said was
caused by an unspecified
explosive device.
Thirteen people were wounded
by the explosion and treated at
nearby hospitals, including a
police officer and an
unidentified person, according
to an updated police tally.
Authorities did not immediately
say who was responsible for
the blast. No group has
claimed responsibility.
A police investigator who
asked not to be named told
AFP it appeared the suspects
had initially targeted the
church but later settled for a
patrol car assigned to guard
the building instead.
“It seems they wanted to get
closer but due to heavy
security they opted to throw
the explosive at the police car
blocking the road,” the officer
added.
The explosion damaged the
police car and a pickup truck
parked nearby, police said.
The town, about 900
kilometres (559 miles) south
of Manila, is located in the
middle of the large Philippine
island of Mindanao, home to a
Muslim minority and decades
of armed rebellion.
However the main Muslim
guerrilla group in the area has
signed a ceasefire with the
Philippine government.
Government forces continue to
fight smaller Muslim armed
groups on the island, some of
whom have pledged allegiance
to Islamic State fighters in Iraq
and Syria and have been
blamed for bombing civilian
targets in the past.

Like 2015, when he predicted 20 things that will be experienced in 2016 , Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, has once again predicted about 22 things that would happen in Nigeria in 2017. Fayose, in a statement personally signed by him, Friday, said: “Fellow Nigerians, remember I predicted 20 things that will be experienced this year 2016. Almost 90 percent of what the Holy Spirit led me to predict came to pass. “The Holy Spirit has once again led me to tell Nigerians what may happen in 2017. We therefore need prayer to avert further calamities in Nigeria. May God help our country.” According to the governor, the 22 predictions for 2017 goes thus: 1. 2017 will be a defining year for Nigeria as there will be major revolution and uprising against the Federal Government because of economic hardship. 2. More judges perceived not to be doing the bidding of the Federal Government will be arrested and humiliated. 3. Efforts will be made to prevent Hon. Justice Walter Onnoghen from being made the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). 4. Dollar will go as high as N600 to $1. 5. APC-led Federal Government will still not have solution to the economic problems of the country as the economy will move from recession to depression. 6. About four ministers will be removed. 7. There will be more pressure on President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele. 8. Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) will absolve Senate President Bukola Saraki. 9. Crisis in the APC will deepen as former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar will officially show intention to leave the party and declare his intention to vie for the office of the president in 2019. 10. A former Head of State/ President may pass on. 11. A new (major) party that will wrestle power from the APC will emerge. 11. More Shi’ite Muslims will be killed and Federal Government will not release the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky. 13. Disobedience to court order and abuse of human rights will continue. 14. Hardship will be more as poverty will continue to ravage the country. 15. The academic community will further lose confidence in the APC-led Federal Government approach to the country’s economic and political challenges. 16. Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano will be re- elected. 17. $29.9 Billion Loan: Federal Government will find it difficult to source the loan. 18. EFCC: Magu may face prosecution. 19. There will be boost in agriculture. 20. Haliburton gate may still be revisited. 21. There will be no solution to power problem as power generation will drop to all time low. 22. Performance of the Federal Government 2017 Budget will be the worst in the history of Nigeria. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/12/fayose-goes-prophetic-gives-22-predictions-2017/ |
Another 21 Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram from their school in 2014 have been released. The girls were brought to Yola International Airport in Yola, Adamawa State capital around 3pm on Thursday. As at press time, Vanguard could however, not verify the authenticity of the release. Details later. The Nigerian Army Wednesday troops rescued over 1,880 civilians from a Boko Haram redoubt in the restive northeast in the past week and arrested hundreds of insurgents, a military commander said on Wednesday. The Sambisa forest, covering about 1,300 square kilometres (500 square miles), is a stronghold of the notorious jihadist group, who kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls in 2014. “During our operations in the period 14-21 December 2016, a total of 1,880 civilians were rescued from Boko Haram enclaves,” Major-general Leo Irabor said in a statement after a news conference in the northeastern city of Maiduguri on Wednesday. Irabor added: “564 Boko Haram terrorists were arrested while 19 others surrendered to our troops. Also, seven suspected kidnappers and 37 foreigners were equally arrested.” He said several Boko Haram fighters were killed and a cache of arms and ammunitions was discovered in the operation, part of a military campaign launched last year to clear the area of the jihadists. Hundreds of civilians, including women and children, have also been freed in neighbouring Cameroon, said Irabor. Eight jihadist suspects were subsequently identified among them and taken into custody. Boko Haram seeks to impose a hardline Islamic legal system in Nigeria’s mainly-Muslim north. It has been blamed for the deaths of at least 20,000 people since 2009. The rebellion has also displaced some 2.6 million people, sparking a humanitarian crisis in the region. The United Nations has warned that the affected region faces the “largest crisis in Africa”. The UN estimates that 14 million people will need outside help next year because of the ongoing violence, particularly in Borno State in northeastern Nigeria, the country’s jihadist heartland. Since early 2015, Nigerian military with the support of a regional force, have recaptured a swathe of territory from the insurgents. But sporadic attacks on civilian soft targets have continued in the volatile region, including the use of female suicide bombers. On December 9, two female suicide bombers killed 45 people and wounded 33 others when they detonated their explosives in a crowded market in Madagali, which has been previously targeted. While there was no immediate claim of responsibility, the blasts bore all the hallmarks of Boko Haram. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/12/breaking-another-21-chibok-girls-reportedly-released-adamawa/ |
