Well I have read through the issue on networking application. Below are my contributions:

Network or Distributed Application
Major problem with this type of application is what pass through the link at a time. You must have an apriopriate architecture design.

With good knowledge of ADO or ADO.NET Microsoft have done a good job for us. If internet access could be realtime online, it will never be a successfull project. (If you are familiar with ASP, why do we need request and response objects?) So the best method is to use batch offline processing communication. To sove many problems, think of com+, Ado Batch processing or ADO persist (Disconnected Recordset) or using ASP with ADO this will fully inplement internet method of communication. I am talking from CSLA (Component Scalable Logical Architecture) for distributed objects.

You have to learn a programming language though you have choose most powerful one (BASIC). Do not be carried away. I am talking from exprience.

I am a programmer of 20years coding old. I started with GWBASIC in 1990. In year 2007, I spent just 2 days to learn PHP and MYSQL server. All programming languages are the same they only deffer in syntax.

Learning programming language is one step, You need to know how to make use of your tools to be a programmer.

Though I join the forum today, You can use this connection string with ado recordset

"Driver={MySQL Odbc 3.51 Driver};Sever=localhost;DataBase=Census;UID=root;PWD=root;option=16427"

you can download mysql odbc driver from mysql server web site. This driver must be installed on all the client machine the connection to work.

this connection string will work on single computer but to work on net work just change the word locahost to the ip address of the server computer.

Hope this will work well for Mysql server.
the work with MsSql server use adodc control to build connection string for the ms sql server copied it and paste as you connection string in you code it will work.

To develop an application, I think is going longer way more than learning any programming language, with any language, you only have tools to work with. Though, a brick layer is as good as his/her tools provided he/she knows how to use them. There many archtectural design models like csla and others that you need to learn about to become a programmer that can provide solution not bugs.
