the issue is that i did not see the desktop folder from the explorer

@4ller i have downloaded the softwarre but couldn't get access to my files. Below are screenies of wat i got.

@ willy u said u repaired grub? which release and how did u carry out the repair. seems u didnt specify the partitions properly
lets know so we can do a walkthru to do a fresh repair or grub2 ni presume?

I used ubuntu 10.04, i carried out the repair using terminal, the problem i did a mistake while specifying tthe partions. And the problem now is that tthe live cd does not even load on my systen again, it just keep loading ubuntu till eternity and i have my entire backup on that partion.

@all linux gurus please i need your help urgently, i reinstalled my windows partion, after the reinstallation the Grub Screen refused to come up, but fixed it after booting with the live CD, but as soon as i try to log into linux it takes me to a command line interface and tells me could not mount some devices that they where not specifird.
Looking forward to your earnest reply.

the repos is your place to start.
95 % of the stuff u will need for your install u will get from the repositories. the remaining five % usually u will just have to add new repositories to the apt sources and then install via synaptic.

its a bit different from windows in that here u get your softwares from central repos which are vetted and secured unlike windows where u keep downloading .exe's from everywhere and installing. it also comes with the added advantage that your apps get updated automagically, unlike windows where u chase your updates urself.

do u have a copy of ubuntu manual? its basic info for starting out, and helps u understand your new system visit ubuntu-manual.org for a pdf copy

also visit ubuntuguide.org for a comprehensive webpage of features and programs u may want to get installed

@gurus, Please i need your assistance i am new to the world of Unix, Just Installed Unbuntu 10.04 downloaded from the official ubuntu site, please i need help on applications, themes and pimping up the OS in general as i have seen i older posts.
The only thing i have been able to do is connecting it to the NET with my Nokia E71.
