Politics / Victor Giadom Reveals Only Way To End APC Leadership Crisis by KopiteP(m): 9:10am On Jun 23, 2020
Victor Giadom, suspended National Deputy Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has said only the party’s National Executive Council, NEC, can resolve the current leadership crisis.

Giadom said APC should be handed over to a higher organ and not the party’s National Working Committee, NWC.

The suspended deputy National Secretary of APC stated this while addressing journalists in Abuja, yesterday.

Gaidom said: “I have always insisted at the beginning of this crisis that the only way to resolve this issue is to surrender this party to a higher organ which is the best.

“And I am still insisting that the only way to get ourselves out of this mess is to convoke a NEC meeting. That is the only route out, I have the feeling that there is no other route to have peace and justice in this party except through a NEC meeting that has been my decision.
There has to be an NEC meeting. NEC is the higher organ above the NWC, I do not see why they are afraid. You have to surrender this organ so that the right would be done and every other decision that has been taken by the leadership would be ratified by NEC. So if we do not have a NEC meeting, it would be difficult to resolve this crisis.”

The current leadership crisis in APC started with the suspension of its National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole by an Appeal Court.

Against this backdrop, Giadom had declared he was Oshiomhole’s replacement
Giadom’s move to head the ruling party was, however, stopped by APC National Working Committee, NWC.

Giadom was, however, restrained from parading himself as APC Deputy National Secretary by a Rivers State High Court, a few days ago.
The court had issued the ruling while granting an ex parte order.

Sports / Burnley Strongly Condemns Banner Reading 'white Lives Matter' At Etihad Stadium by KopiteP(m): 11:08pm On Jun 22, 2020
Burnley says it "strongly condemns" those behind a banner reading 'White Lives Matter Burnley' that was towed by an aircraft over Etihad Stadium during Monday's match against Manchester City.

The aircraft circled over the stadium just after kick-off in City's 5-0 win.

Burnley and City players and staff had taken a knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement moments earlier.

"Burnley strongly condemns the actions of those responsible for the aircraft and offensive banner," said the club.

"We wish to make it clear that those responsible are not welcome at Turf Moor.

"We apologise unreservedly to the Premier League, to Manchester City and to all those helping to promote Black Lives Matter."

Burnley added that the banner "in no way represents" what the club stands for and that they will "work fully with the authorities to identify those responsible and take appropriate action".

Burnley captain Ben Mee said he and his team-mates also condemned the banner.

"We're ashamed, we're embarrassed," Mee told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"It's a minority of our supporters - I know I speak for a massive part of our support who distance ourselves from anything like that.

"It definitely had a massive impact on us to see that in the sky.

"We are embarrassed that our name was in it, that they tried to attach it to our club - it doesn't belong anywhere near our club.

"Fans like that don't deserve to be around football."

Both Burnley and City were wearing shirts with the players' names replaced with 'Black Lives Matter'.

Since the Premier League resumed on 17 June after a 100-day hiatus because of the coronavirus pandemic, players and officials have been showing their support for the movement for racial equality following the death of George Floyd in the United States last month.

Floyd, a 46-year-old unarmed black man, died as a white police officer held a knee on his neck for nearly nine minutes. His death sparked protests around the world.

Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards said seeing the banner was "disheartening".

"After how far we've come in these last couple of weeks, it really does hurt me," he told Sky Sports.

"I agree everyone should have free speech but when it looked like everything was on the up there's a small fraction who want to ruin it."

City and England forward Raheem Sterling said it was a "massive step" that players took a knee in support of Black Lives Matter on the opening night of the top-flight's return.

"The club has a proud record of working with all genders, religions and faiths through its award-winning community scheme, and stands against racism of any kind," added Burnley.

"We are fully behind the Premier League's Black Lives Matter initiative and, in line with all other Premier League games undertaken since Project Restart, our players and football staff willingly took the knee at kick-off at Manchester City."

Sports / Liverpool Make £54m Bid For Kalidou Koulibaly by KopiteP(m): 4:16pm On Jun 22, 2020
Liverpool have reportedly made a bid of £54million to Napoli for defender Kalidou Koulibaly.

Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport (translated by the Standard) claim that The Red have made the cut-price offer for the Senegalese defender in a hope of bringing him in to form a defensive partnership with Virgil van Dijk.

Napoli have reportedly been asking for bids of around £80m for the centre-back is it remains to be seen if they’d accept such an offer from the Reds.

Having watched Dejan Lovren really struggle when he came on as a substitute against Everton, there may well be more than a few Liverpool supporters who would like to see their team sign a new defender to join Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip as part of Liverpool’s defensive options.

Whether The Reds are willing to splash such a fee on Koulibaly remains to be seen but if they are, then getting one of the best defenders in the world for a relatively cheap fee, all things considered, would be a very good deal, especially if Liverpool could help find such a move by selling Lovren.

Politics / Fresh Crises Hit PDP State Chapters Over 2023 by KopiteP(m): 12:06am On May 28, 2020
Fresh crises are erupting in Plateau, Ekiti, Kaduna, Ogun and other state chapters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as political actors in the states have begun calculations ahead of the 2023 general elections.

There is anxiety in the states as political rivalry over control of party structures ahead of 2023 is gaining momentum with political gladiators nursing different ambitions and interests.

Some party stalwarts have, however, expressed fears that if the Prince Uche Secondus-led National Working Committee (NWC) does not wade in to save the situation, the crises, which were deepening by the day, would spell doom for the party in the next general elections.

In Plateau, two factions of the party have emerged in form of caretaker committees. While one faction is led by Hon. Nandom Pyennap, the other is led by Mr. Yakubu Choco.
The Pyennap faction is allegedly backed by the party’s governorship candidate in the 2019 elections, Sen. Jeremiah Useni, while the Choco-led committee is allegedly backed by a former Governor of the state, Sen. Jonah Jang, and the PDP National Secretary, Sen. Umar Tsauri.

Daily Trust reports that both factions are claiming legitimacy and authenticity while the national leadership of the party has maintained silence.

In Ekiti, Daily Trust gathered that while there are parallel ward executives across the state, there is a standing suit instituted to stop the party from recognising the list of executives produced by the Haruna Manu–led ward congresses committee in the state.

The state chapter of the PDP was thrown into a fresh crisis when the Olujimi and Fayose factions produced parallel executive lists after a botched congress.

A stalwart of the party in Ekiti State, Sen. Duro Faseyi, however, said, “NWC’s intervention is necessary to restore peace to the party, unite the members and ensure the party’s ability to return to power in Ekiti.”

The Kaduna chapter of the party is also engulfed in crisis leading to the suspension/ expulsion of key party stalwarts in the state.

Sen. Suleiman Hunkuyi, Dr. John Danfulani and four others were on May 16, 2020, suspended from the party over alleged anti-party activities which the PDP said was backed by Section 57 (3) of the party’s constitution of 2017 (as amended).

The state Publicity Secretary of the PDP caretaker committee, Abraham Catoh, had on Tuesday said the seven-man disciplinary committee headed by Hamza Ishaq Danmahawayi had sent letters of invitation to all the suspended members to appear before it, but that only Hashimu Garba appeared to defend the allegations against him.

Catoh stated that after consultation with some critical stakeholders of the party, the state working committee had met on Monday to consider the recommendations of the disciplinary committee which recommended expulsion of Hunkuyi and others.

He said while Hunkuyi’s expulsion was reviewed to a six-month suspension, that of Dr. Danfulani and Ubale Salmanduna was upheld.

Reacting, Danfulani said the party’s constitution has no provision for a caretaker committee and that as such his expulsion from the party cannot stand.

He said that only a fully elected state executive had the right to set up a disciplinary committee.

He further said the matters, the committee sat on were before a state high court and a federal high court, adding that, “Their action is in contempt. I want to assure them that their action can’t stand. It’s an action in futility; a waste of energy and time.”

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, told our correspondent in an interview that, “The issues will soon be resolved internally.”

Foreign Affairs / Lesotho Prime Minister Resigns by KopiteP(m): 3:48pm On May 19, 2020
Lesotho’s embattled Prime Minister Thomas Thabane on Tuesday formally announced his retirement during a public broadcast. “The right time to retire has finally arrived,” he said.

Thabane did not mention the ongoing investigation into the murder of his first wife, Lipolelo, which has led to repeated calls for his resignation. The investigation was opened in January.

Thabane’s present wife Maesaiah has been charged with murder and attempted murder and currently on bail. Thabane also appeared in court in February in connection with the murder, but was not charged.

Police said at the time of his court appearance that he would be charged alongside his wife because they had a common purpose. However, Thabane did not mention whether he was going to be charged in his resignation speech, but thanked his wife and family for their ongoing support. He also promised to back his successor. The 80 year old Thabane, who has had a long political career in the tiny mountain kingdom surrounded by South Africa, announced his intention to retire from politics in January.

He has since come under increasing pressure to step down. The formal resignation came shortly after the Council of State, which advises King Letsie III, instructed him to resign and named the current Finance Minister, Dr Moeketsi Majoro, as Prime Minister designate. Thabane told supporters in his home constituency of Abia on Monday that he had stepped down as premier, but not as Head of the party.

Health / COVID-19: Policeman On The Run After Testing Positive by KopiteP(m): 4:44pm On May 17, 2020
Police authorities and officials of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) are looking for a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) who tested positive for COVID-19 but fled when a team came to evacuate him on Friday afternoon, The Nation has learnt.
It was gathered the CSP (names withheld) attached to 21 Police Mobile Force (PMF) Nyanya, Abuja, was billed to be evacuated from his residence at Garki Barracks around 2pm on Friday.

The officer was said to have been under quarantine and treatment at the National Hospital Abuja Isolation Centre after he tested positive.

It was however not clear how and why the senior officer left the hospital and returned to his home where he was said to have continued self- treatment with the help of his friends and colleagues until NCDC officials came for him.

Sources said the health workers were led by policemen from Garki Division to the officer’s residence but he refused all entreaties to open the door and follow them.
It was gathered the officer and his family members were seen peeping through the window while the evacuators made unsuccessful efforts to convince him to follow them.

“He was later seen driving out of the barracks in his car to an unknown destination. His mobile phone has remained unreachable.

“Surveillance teams have been set up to trail and take him into custody. Police medical team has alerted and on standby,” said a source.

Contacted, Police spokesman for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command Mansah said he was unaware of the incident and promised to revert but had not at the time of this report.

Politics / Meet Virginia Etiaba, The First Female Governor In Nigeria by KopiteP(m): 4:19pm On May 17, 2020
Dame Virginia Ngozi Etiaba. She is the first female governor in this country. Here is everything you need to know about this impressive woman:

Origin story
The native of Nnewi in Anambra State was born on November 11, 1942. She had her primary and secondary school education in Kano state, where she was raised by her Uncle, Chief Pius Ejimbe. This was followed by her Teachers Training programme in Gombe State. Her educational qualifications include the National Certificate of Education, Bachelor of Education (Hon.) and a certificate in Information Technology. Etiaba worked as a teacher and headmistress for 35 years in several parts of Anambra state. She retired in 1991 and went on to start the Bennet Etiaba Memorial Schools in Nnewi.

Personal life
Etiaba got married to the late Bennet Etiaba of Umudim Nnewi in 1998.
The two lived happily for 24 years until he passed away. She has six children.

Politics
In March 2006, the 64-year-old resigned as the proprietress to take the position of the Deputy Governor of Anambra State. Later that year, she became governor following the impeachment of the previous governor, Peter Obi, for alleged gross misconduct.Reportedly, she initially refused to take the position saying, “The governor is my boss and he remains my boss.” BBC reports that it took some elders, leaders of her party and nearly five hours to persuade her to change her mind. “The peculiarity of situation that has led me to accept the position,” she later revealed. Etiaba’s decision to become governor earned her criticism from many local religious and community leaders. She was sworn in on November 3, 2006.
Etiaba’s tenure lasted for only three months before she went back to being the deputy governor. The former governor, Obi, was re-instated on February 9, 2007, after the Court of Appeal nullified his impeachment.

Brief but impactful tenure
Despite having a short reign, she did have some remarkable achievements. She flagged off several road projects and signed Anambra State’s Child Rights Bill into law. She is said to have invested heavily in the state’s Orient Petroleum company.
She also managed to put an end to ‘Suba kwa Igbo’. It was an attempt to stop the Igbo language and culture. These earned her the nickname ‘Mama Anambra.’

Surviving cancer
Apart from being the the first female governor in Nigeria’s history, she is also a cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with colon cancer in Nigeria. It was confirmed at at King’s College London Hospital, Denmark Hill, South East London in 1998.
Descibing one of the scariest moments in her life, she said, “It was cancer of the colon, indeed! The ailment had gotten to a serious stage that only immediate operation was the answer. “I made it,” she added. “Thanks to Almighty God. And so, today, I am free from that dreaded illness and I use this opportunity to encourage all cancer patients to hang on there as cancer diagnosis does not amount to a death sentence.”

Health / Gombe Discharges 39 Coronavirus Patients From Isolation Centres by KopiteP(m): 5:51pm On May 12, 2020
The Gombe State Taskforce on COVID-19 on Tuesday said it has treated and discharged another 39 patients after their results returned negative; making a total of 59 patients discharged from the isolation centres.

Chairman of the taskforce, Idris Mohammed, disclosed that five patients were discharged on Monday while 34 others were released on Tuesday after their results returned negative from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

He said with the earlier 20 patients released last Saturday, the state has now released a total of 59 patients, and were since reunited with their respective families.

According to him, out of the 118 confirmed cases from 1, 168 samples tested at the NCDC laboratory in Abuja, the state has 58 active cases and recorded only one death from the coronavirus pandemic.
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Health, Dr Ahmed Gana, said large numbers of patients are being discharged due to new protocol introduced by the NCDC.

He said the new protocol now allows patients to be discharge if their results returned negative even once.

“According to the new NCDC guidelines, a patient can be discharged if his result sample return negative once, unlike before when it had to be tested negative twice,” he said.

Health / COVID-19: CBN Launches N100bn Intervention Fund To Manufacture Local Vaccines by KopiteP(m): 5:40pm On May 12, 2020
The governor of Central Bank (CBN) Godwin Emefiele on Tuesday challenged Nigerian Scientists at home and abroad to go back to their laboratories and develop Nigerian homegrown vaccines for the treatment of COVID-19.

The CBN governor said the apex bank has launched a N100 billion healthcare intervention fund to support Nigerian scientists to develop Nigerian homegrown vaccines.

Emefiele made the revelation while speaking at the commissioning of a 300-bed Isolation Centre at Thisday Dome, Abuja, donated by Thisday Media and Technology Group in collaboration with Sahara Foundation to the Federal Government and the Federal Capital Territory Administration.
The Centre contains COVID-19 testing, tracing and treatment centre.

He said: “I wish to acknowledge, however, that our ability to restore our economy is dependent on how we address the public health crises brought on by COVID-19. It is in the realisation of this fact that the CBN recently launched the N100 billion healthcare intervention fund.
Practitioners in the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors will be able to access finance at a single-digit interest rate through this fund. Our objective is to improve the capacity of our healthcare system to address emerging public healthcare challenges.
Furthermore, in order to encourage greater research and development in Nigeria of drugs and vaccines that would help prevent the spread of COVID-19, the Central Bank of Nigeria is developing a framework under which grants and long term loan facilities will be provided to researchers, science institutions and biotechnology firms to develop Nigerian homegrown vaccines.

“Needless to say, if we wait for developed foreign countries to develop their vaccines, we will be the last in the queue to receive curative remedies for our teaming populations. The CBN today challenges Nigerian scientists at home and abroad to go back to their laboratories and develop Nigerian homegrown vaccines, once validated by the Nigerian health authorities, the CBN will step in and do the needful for the sake of our 200 million Nigerians now confronted by COVID-19.

Politics / Borrowing: World bank, AFDB To Approve Nigeria’s loan Request By June – DMO by KopiteP(m): 6:07pm On May 11, 2020
The Federal Government has disclosed that the $1.5billion loan request from the World Bank and the additional $500 million loan request from the African Development Bank (AfDB) will be approved by the banks’ boards sometime in June or July this year.

The Director – General of the Debt Management Office, Patience Oniha disclosed this during a live telecast business programme on Channels TV at the weekend.

She maintained that the loans being negotiated by the government with the World Bank, AfDB and the $3.4billion recently secured loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) were concessional loans at interest rate of one percent, adding that the aspect of the loan that does not fit the definition of concessional is the tenure.

The debt management expert said that that the loans were aimed to fund the 2020 budget in order to bridge the revenue gap, adding that “we can’t raise money now in the domestic or the International market”
Oniha explained that Nigeria opted for the IMF’s Rapid Financing Instrument (RFI) which came at a one percent interest rate as opposed to the Rapid Credit Facility programme which Ghana secured at zero percent interest rate because Nigeria is classified by the development institutions as a middle income country.

According to her, in 2016 Nigeria moved up from low to middle income country ratings and by so doing does not qualify to access loans from the development finance institutions at one percent interest rate.

The DMO Director General also clarified that under the 2020 budget and the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) for 2020 – 2022, which is being revised, the total domestic borrowing in the budget totaled about N2. 644 trillion, including the N850 billion that will be sourced from the domestic market.

She said: “If we take note of the fact that we have already raised N570billion of that, it means that for the rest of the year from May to December, if the necessary approvals are secured, the new domestic borrowing will be about N2.70 trillion
