Politics"The Candidates" - Atiku Reveals Why He Is Running For President by Korlah14(op): 9:42pm On Jan 30, 2019
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has said he is running for president to bring his business and political experience to uncovered in the administration of the nation

. Abubakar, who spoke during a live town hall meeting held at Sheraton Hotel, Abuja, tagged ‘The Candidates,’ on Wednesday evening, said he saw himself as a bridge between the current and future generations.

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party said, “I would like to claim that, as far as experience is concerned, I am the most experienced.

Secondly, I am bringing my business experience, which I acquired over a long period, almost two decades after leaving public service.

“Thirdly, I believe that I am a candidate for the future because I try to bridge the current generation and the future generation. When we come to the issue of security, at the time they came in, the security challenge was restricted to the North-East. “

Today, it has spread to two other northern zones — North-West and North-Central. I don’t think that is a good performance. On the basis of that, I think Nigerians needs to know all that. The current All Progressives Congress administration has really not performed to their expectations.”

BusinessAMAZING: Two Sisters Pretends To Be Boys To Keep Their Dad's Barbershop Running by Korlah14(op): 4:48pm On Jan 27, 2019
Two Indian teenage girls, 18-year-old Jyoti Kumari and 16-year-old Neha, took over their father’s business in Uttar Pradesh after he fell ill in 2014. .

For four years they pretended to be guys in order to run their father’s barber shop.

The barbershop had initially closed but the shop was the family’s only source of income. So, the girls decided to take matters into their own hands and run it themselves.

Initially, the customers were sceptical about getting their moustaches trimmed and hair cut by women and did not behave well with them, Jyoti told Newsmen. . “So we decided to change our whole get-up so that none could identify us,” she added.

The girls cut their hair short and adopted names Deepak and Raju. . 100 houses in their village knew their real identities but the surrounding communities had no idea, Neha said.

The pair earned almost 400 rupees every day, which was enough for them to pay for their father’s treatment and support the family. . “We faced a lot of troubles when we started the job in 2014,” Neha said. “Others in the village mocked us but we ignored them and focused on work since we had no other option.” But that was not it, the girls would open the shop in the afternoon so that they could continue studying in the morning.

Jyoti has now graduated and Neha is still studying. ““Now we have gained enough confidence and don’t fear anyone,” Neha said. “The majority of people have come to know that we are girls.” Jyoti has started regrowing her hair. . Dhruv Narayan, the girls’ father, said: “This gives me a lot of pain when I find them at work but I am very proud of my daughters. They have extricated the family out of a sudden crisis.”

The two girls were honoured by the government for their spirit and determination. Hats off to these girls who did not leave any stone unturned to support their family.

EducationASUU Strike: Interview With The ASUU President And Reasons Why ASUU Has Not Yet by Korlah14(op): 10:23pm On Jan 24, 2019
In this interview National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, says lecturers are yet to reach a resolution with the Federal Government on their demands.

There is speculation that the union threw out a deal reached with government in an attempt to end the strike by universities academic staff. Why?

There was no agreement so we didn’t reject any deal reached with the government. What they gave us at the last meeting was a proposal of our demands. Proposals are not the same thing as agreement. They gave us a proposal and we said we will take the proposal back to our members. What we have been doing in the last one week was to consult with our members and we still convey the report of our consultation to the Ministry of Labour and Employment. Now they are saying we will meet on Monday (last) to discuss the positions.

You discussed almost all your demands with government. What are the controversial aspects?

The major issues discussed were about three and the first is on revitalisation fund, which is key to our struggle. The entire struggle revolves around it. It is the fund that we will need to fix our laboratories, libraries and furnish our classrooms and others. So, we cannot suspend strike with nothing to show for our effort in terms of making our environment conducive for us.

What government proposed was to release N20 billion in two installments and we said that is not it; there are five tranches of N220 billion that are pending and our members are saying that government should at least release one tranche and as a sign of commitment to that they should release N50 billion immediately

So, if they can release N50 billion immediately they can now spread the balance over the next three quarters of this year, That is the way we have reported to government on revitalisation.

The second area has to do with the payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) for which the government promised to release N20 billion and we said the N20 billion should be strictly for ASUU members. And if that money is for ASUU members, government should tell us how to pay the balance as indicated in the report of the Government Committee on Forensic Audit.

Government said they will pay in four installments but the installments have no timeline; government should give timeline and the amount that will be released at each installment.

Another issue discussed is that government should stop the payment of academic allowances from falling into arrears. Government promised in 2017 that they will mainstream it into the budget but that wasn’t done. We are saying that the compilation of 2019 budget is ongoing; government should include the EAA in the budget so we won’t come back in 2020 to restart talks about arrears of EAA.

The third area we are trying to iron out is shortfall in salaries. Government promised to pay salary arrears on Saturday 18th of January, 2019 and we are still waiting to see the evidence of payment. There were three universities that were omitted and we are drawing government attention to those universities and we hope they will address them alongside others.

Those are the three controversial areas that we are waiting to be implemented and then there are issues related to our pension fund administrators. We have done the final inspection and we are hoping that government will do the right thing as promised.

Many people say the striking lecturers aren’t considering the future of students and the concerns parents have for their kids. What’s your reaction to these?

Don’t forget that ASUU members are also parents, but what we are doing now is that we are making a sacrifice for students to secure their future. We are sacrificing our today so that our children can have public universities that they can be proud of in the future. Those of us who are struggling now, went to public universities and if students are lucky to be in those universities they should also support us in defending the universities from collapsing

The trouble we are making is that we don’t want a situation in which our universities would collapse just like our primary and secondary schools have collapsed. That is the context from which we want people to appreciate the ASUU struggle. This is because public primary and secondary teachers were not supported to defend the schools. We have lost them; we don’t want a situation in which we will all be ashamed to send our children to public universities. So, the sacrifice is for the future of our children.

Going by the proposal you have, are we likely to see the strike end anytime soon?

The strike will end when government addresses our minimalist proposal send to it. We have reduced what we proposed drastically, what we propose now is a far cry from where we started. So, government must address this proposal that we have before it in order to pave way for the suspension of the strike action. Unless it does so, we cannot go back to our members to prevail on them to consider other positions than where we are. We enjoin Nigerians to help us appeal to government to do what is necessary to fix Nigerian universities.

PoliticsPROF Kingsley Moghalu Assures Nigerians That His Presidency Will Restore Nigeria by Korlah14(op): 9:17pm On Jan 23, 2019
The Presidential Candidate of Young Peoples Party, Prof. Kingsley Moghalu, has advised the government to respect agreements reached with the Nigerian Labour Congress on the N30,000 minimum wage.

The former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria said the N30,000 minimum wage is doable and there should be no form of excuse from any state government.

He likened the All Progressives Congress and Peoples Democratic Party to twins in corruption.

“In APC corruption is concentrated among the cabal while in PDP corruption is democratised. My presidency will restore Nigeria to path of greatness,” he said.

Speaking with journalists on his mission to restore the country to the path of glory, Moghalu said his government would give education priority because no nation could rise beyond the level of its education.

He assured to resolve the crisis with the Academic Staff Union of Universities if elected president by committing necessary funds to the sector.

He said, “The office of the presidency is for a person that has the mental capacity for policy formulation and execution. Joblessness, insecurity and ASUU strike will end with YPP.

“My government will invest in education and honour agreement with the union. No society can rise above the level of education of its citizens.”

He said he would remove fuel subsidy and other subsidies on consumption but would subsidise production to get money to run government.

‘We will expand the base of taxation, privatise the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation partly and remove fuel subsidy,” he said.

Moghalu boasted that he had the strategy to win the election adding that his emergence would shake the world like the result of the United States Presidential election of 2016.

He said, “We have the plan and strategy to win the election, I will be sworn in as the president. Many people will be shocked just the way people were shocked in the United States election of 2016 when people went to bed thinking Hillary Clinton would be declared winner only to wake up and heard Donald Trump declared winner.

EducationBREAKING: ASUU Continues Strike... Details Of Meeting by Korlah14(op): 10:17pm On Jan 21, 2019
The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Monday said that it would continue with the ongoing strike unless the Federal Government satisfied their demand on the revitalization.

Speaking after the rescheduled meeting with the FG at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment which lasted about four hours, ASUU president, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, told reporters that the meeting ended with grey areas to be resolved

He said, “We have not suspended the strike, the discussion will continue at a later date. We are going back to our members for further consultation. FG gave us reaction to our proposals but there were still grey areas that we are trying to sort out.

“Before the strike can be suspended, the most critical area that FG must address is revitalization. It is central to our academic work, unless that area is addressed, our members will still have issues. We are not demanding for N50bn, we are saying that the minimum that FG can release to reactivate revitalization fund is N50bn.”

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, however said that the FG and made substantial commitment to ASUU demands and would meet the leadership again when they were ready. He added that although he had expected a marathon session with ASUU because President Muhammadu Buhari had ordered him to ensure that all issues relating to the strike were resolved, the meeting ended early.

He said, “We did not take a long time than we anticipated. We have other commitments but the important thing is that we have made substantial progress. We have reached some agreements in seven areas. Most of the issues have been resolved but ASUU will need to consult its members and come with what they think.

EducationASUU Strike: ASUU, Fg To Meet Monday, January 21. by Korlah14(op): 7:12am On Jan 20, 2019
The Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Federal Government are to continue talks Monday (tomorrow) on the most proficient method to determine the impasse over the two-month-old strike set out upon by speakers.

National President of ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, affirmed the improvement in a phone meet with SUNDAY PUNCH, in Abuja, on Friday.

He, however, said the union was not optimistic about the prospects of an early resolution of the industrial dispute.

In response to a question on whether there had been any fresh development with regard to the resolution of the dispute,

Ogunyemi said, “I’ am afraid nothing new. I understand they will be meeting us on Monday. Let’s wait and see if they take a reasonable step; it will determine our next line of action. Until then, let’s wait and see

.” The ASUU president had in an exclusive interview with The PUNCH last week said members of the union were tired of government’s failed promises.

He said, “Last year, they promised to release the funds but they did not until November when the strike began. Our members are saying they do not want promises again; what they want is action, implementation or disbursement of funds.

“The government must act in a way to convince the union that the agreement has not been set aside. To show that the government has not set aside the agreement, they should release one tranche

.” He explained that in order to forestall a situation where ASUU and the government would restart negotiations on arrears of earned academic allowances, both sides had agreed that “it would be mainstreamed into the 2019 budget.” Ogunyemi also said, “We are going to have a discussion on when to commence renegotiation because there are still grey areas. If the government can substantially address these issues, we will be more confident to face our members on the way forward. For now, the signals we are getting is that our members do not actually want to accept this government proposal from us.”

Members of ASUU went on strike November 4, 2018 to interest for enhanced subsidizing of Universities and execution of past concurrences with the legislature.

The association is additionally looking for the usage of the 2009 FGN/ASUU assentions, Memorandum of Understanding (MoU; 2012 and 2013) and Memorandum of Action (MoA, 2017), among others. The university teachers are also demanding the release of the operational licence of the Nigerian University Employees Pension Company.

The Director of Press at the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Samuel Olowookere, could not be reached when one of our correspondents tried to get the reaction of the Federal Government on the issue But a source in the ministry, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told SUNDAY PUNCH that ASUU should be blamed for the delay in reopening the universities.

The source added that the FG had showed commitment to the ASUU’s demands and that it was better to start from what the FG had offered than to halt negotiation.

“The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, had told the leadership of ASUU that the FG would accept many of their demands but flexibility is needed to implement the rest. They left the meeting happy and said they would discuss the progress with their other organs. But they had delayed in moving forward.

The blame is no longer in on the FG. ASUU should come forward with what they think of the FG’s commitment so far.”

PoliticsPresident Buhari, Atiku Didnt Participate In The 2019 Presidential Debate. See R by Korlah14(op): 8:56pm On Jan 19, 2019
Details have risen on why the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, President Muhammadu Buhari, and the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, stayed out of the debate sorted out by the Nigeria Elections Debate Group and the Broadcasting Organizations of Nigeria.

It was discovered that Buhari was prompted by his Campaign team to avoid the debate after what was seen as a poor outing on Wednesday's town hall meeting titled, 'The Candidate', which was directed by pro writer, Kadariah Ahmed.

At the town hall meeting which Buhari attended alongside Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, the President failed to properly answer some questions asked, causing the Vice-President to bail him out on several occasions.

A source close to Buhari said, “The President wanted to come but you can see that he is not ready to debate some people. It is better for him to miss the debate so that his words would not be used against him. After all, silence cannot be quoted.”

The source said the President had just disclosed to Nigerians what he wanted to do at the last town hall meeting and that was sufficient.

"You need the President to go up against motivationer speakers who do this professionally? You need him to give them a stage to lambast him? No chance! The races will be won on the field and not on a platform.

" Atiku, it was educated, had arrived from the United States no less than four hours before the event. He proceeded to the Transcorp Hotel where the event was taking place but immediately it was discovered that Buhari would not be attending the event, he made a u-turn and stormed out of the event.

In a series of tweets, Atiku wrote, “We came here for a Presidential debate, not a candidacy debate, and I, Atiku Abubakar cannot challenge or question an administration where the man at the helm of the affairs of the nation is not present to defend himself or his policies.

“As a leader and former Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, let me first apologise to all Nigerians, my fellow candidates and the moderator for the APC Presidential candidate’s absence in this debate.

His non-appearance is a slight on all of us and our democracy. “With respect to my fellow candidates, Fela Durotoye, Oby Ezekwesili, Kingsley Moghalu to moderator Mark Sugar and with apologies to Nigerians here and at home expecting an interesting debate,

I regret I will not be able to go on with this debate due to President Buhari’s absence. “After all, you cannot shave a man’s head in his absence. I do not believe in attacking a man who is not here to defend himself.

I however challenge President Buhari to choose a date and time for a debate where he will be present and I will be there, hopefully with the other candidates as well.

The three Presidential candidates at the debate including a former Minister of Education, Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili, motivational speaker, Mr Fela Durotoye, and a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Kingsley Moghalu.

EducationASUU STRIKE: ASUU Again Gives Conditions To Suspend Strike by Korlah14(op): 8:03pm On Jan 17, 2019
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Thursday gave conditions upon which the prolonged industrial action will be suspended.

“The Academic Staff Union of Universities @ASUUNGR have asked @AsoRock to release N50 billion to demonstrate its commitment to the revitalisation of public universities, in line with previous agreements with the union,” ASUU tweeted.

The union said the N50 billion will form the first share of the N220 billion federal government agreed for the project this year and add to the N20 billion earlier released for the year.

It also disclosed that the union has “submitted its suggestions and awaits a meeting with the government next week.”

The lecturers are demanding improved funding of universities and implementation of previous agreements with the government, which led to the strike that started November 4, 2018.

Although the minister of labour, Chris Ngige, last Thursday said the government has approved N20 billion to be used to offset the outstanding arrears, ASUU said they are still awaiting its payment.

Government promised to release the shortfall in salaries by January 18th, that’s a day away. Let’s wait and confirm that they’ve released it.”

“The union has submitted its suggestions and awaits a meeting with the government next week,” he added.
