The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected that Nigeria’s economy will recede by 3% in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic that has disrupted global supply chains. This would be the worst recession in 30 years after a negative economic growth of 1.51% in 2016. In 1987, Nigeria’s economy receded by -10.87 and -0.6 in 1991. This is contained in the April 2020 World Economic Outlook report released on Tuesday in Washington. Gita Gopinath, IMF chief economist and director of the research department, said the recession to be experienced would be the worst since the Great Depression that occurred between 1929 and 1932 when the advanced economies shrunk by 16%. It is projected that the Nigerian economy will rebound by 2.4% in 2021. “For the first time since the Great Depression, both the advanced economies and emerging and developing economies are in a recession,” she said in a press briefing that marked the beginning of the April 2020 Spring meetings that is holding virtually. “For 2020, growth in advanced economies is projected at -6%. Emerging markets and developing economies which typically have normal growth levels well above advanced economies are also projected to have negative growth of -1% and -2.2% if you exclude China.” Gopinath also said the fund has projected 170 countries across the world would experience a shrinkage in their income per capita. The economist said the recovery in 2020 would be partial and the projections provided in the report is the baseline scenario. https://www.thecable.ng/breaking-nigeria-heading-into-its-worst-recession-in-30-years-says-imf

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has warned governors against easing the lockdown declared in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic in the country. TheCable had reported how some governors relaxed the ban for Jumat and forthcoming Easter. But in a statement on Friday, Francis Faduyile and Olumuyiwa Odusote, NMA president and secretary-general respectively, said this could be a setback to measures to check the spread of the virus. “Of particular concern is the declaration by the Cross River State Governor that social distancing is not needed while wearing a face mask,” the association said. “A moratorium on the lockdown to allow mass gathering in mosques and churches from Friday to Sunday in Rivers; the lifting of the ban on Friday prayers by the Katsina and Kogi governments. “We are aware that similar orders have also been given in Ondo, Ebonyi and Imo states which have approved mass attendance of Easter services. “While appreciating the prime place of religion in our national lives and especially the value Christians place on Easter, we place on record that there is now the evidence of community transmission of COVID-19.” The NMA appealed to authorities to rescind their decision in the interest of the safety of lives and implored the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to ensure that such gatherings do not take place. As of April 9, 2020, Nigeria had recorded 288 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Lagos currently has the highest number of confirmed cases with 158 patients. However, of that figure, 46 persons have been discharged from the Infectious Diseases Hospital, Yaba. https://www.thecable.ng/covid-19-its-not-time-to-ease-lockdown-nma-warns-governors |
The Nigerian army has asked Nigerians to stop producing drama skits and video clips that cast the military and the security forces in a bad light. Sagir Musa, acting director of army public relations, made the appeal in a statement on Friday. Musa said the development has created a wrong impression of Nigerian soldiers and projected the military as “an undisciplined and brutal institution”. “We are well trained and dedicated professionals that perform our Constitutional duties diligently and dispassionately with utmost regard for human rights and rules of engagement,” he said. “It is wrong to continue to produce such drama skits, video clips, and graphics at the expense of the excellent image of the Nigerian soldier. “It affects troops morale and has broad implications for national security. No nation or good citizen makes jest of its military. “Therefore, we are appealing to well-meaning Nigerians and producers of such materials to desist forthwith. “The military or security agencies should not be made the subject or focus of those skits at the expense of a key and strategic arm of the security architecture of our great nation.” Musa said the authorities would investigate the source of props and costumes used for the skits and ensure that army uniforms are not used to denigrate the military. “Some of these measures include restriction of movement, lockdown and stay at home directives which are being enforced by various government and security agencies,” he said. “Some creative Nigerians found it expedient to provide comic relief through the production of funny jokes, graphics, drama skits, and video clips to entertain the public. The materials are circulated through social media. “Unfortunately, most of these clips circulating on social media bordered on the Nigerian soldier and projecting the military as lawless, brutal and being harsh on people flouting the stay at home order pursuant to the lockdown and stay at home directives imposed in some states in Nigeria.” https://www.thecable.ng/extra-stop-depicting-us-as-brutal-in-drama-skits-it-affects-our-morale-says-army |
The guy is no doubt a potential rapist, if he is not one already. BTW, what does he mean by indecent dressing since what I consider indecent might be decent to another? |
Have you advised Buhari to obey the valid court orders that asked him to release Dasuki and El Zakzaky? |
Fraudulent headline |
RIP The rate of political assasinations for some time now is a big reason to worry |
Why then did the 'core progressive', Oshiomole, meet nPDP leaders at night to beg them not to defect from APC? |

How come the presidency has not deemed it fit to react to these genuine concerns? If Nigeria disintegrates today, Buhari should be blamed as the main culprit since injustice and peace cannot co-exist |

The level of tension in the land should leave no discerning mind in doubt that Nigeria is on self-destruct. The only way out is for justice to be done to all. This cannot be achieved through ad baculum but by giving every section of the country its due |
To think that the Imo state government has the effrontery to insult the sensibility of well meaning Nigerians by issuing a statement where it maintained that the demolition was seamless and a huge success, without making a mention of the unfortunate encounter between the victims and the trigger-happy security personnel, is ridiculous to put it mildly. It is a clear indication that the life of the ordinary man, which is the most basic right every responsible government ought to protect, is of no value to the government. My query is whether there is any ground to believe anything government has to say if it can spoon-feed the masses with barefaced lies regarding matters that are totally in the public domain |
Well, let's give him the benefit of doubt. As he said, he has more experience in this matter than most us |
It still baffles me how that guy was able to escape. I smell something fishy here |
