Peruse my post again.I said teams become elites based on their performance since the inception of that tournament not on how many semi-finals they have made within a certain period.Spain made their first quarter finals in the 30's and have made about 4\5 more in the tournament.Alongside the Netherlands, they were termed 'underachievers' because they were one of the few elites that had failed to win the trophy before 2010.Spain has long been a WC elite even before the 50's.

you cannot expect a person to be in shipshape form around the clock. or to be banging in 91 goals every single year. multiple variables could put mockers on that - did you consider injury?, match fitness?, personal issues?,managerial tutelage?, or whether the members of the Squad remained unchanged(cos Xavi was still with us in 2012)

in the year Messi banged in 91 goals did the circumstances bear similitude to the years he performed remarkably well albeit couldn't surpass his previously set standards(by standard i mean in the aspect of goal scoring not team achievements)?
