Oh, nice.

I did that too in my pre ppr phase.

Landed seniors, please I need your advice, I am arriving in Calgary next month and I am sending some of my stuff through cargo. Can my load arrive in Calgary before me or do I have to land first before my things arrive? I know that we can bring in stuff duty free for one year, what am asking is whether I can send the things ahead of me before I land? It is more convenient for me that way but I don’t want to run foul of any laws.

Please help, thank you all.....

@Sotaj, can you please confirm if I will be needing the FRSC letters in Alberta? I will be landing in Calgary next month and all my efforts to get the letter has been abortive. I have a valid Nigeria driver’s license. I can get an international drivers license if need be. Thank you in advance. grin

@ TEECANN,

I will only answer your first question. Other people may be able to give answers to the rest.

I do not really know about Ontario, but I want to believe it will be same as it is in Alberta. The Nigerian Driver license you submit for the processing of your Alberta license becomes the property of the Province (It will not be returned to you). So, you may want to make copies before dropping it.

Congrats on your landing,

Does anyone know how to ship things from Lagos? Please help, I am leaving next month and I am using British airways/ American Airlines to Calgary. They seem to have the shortest flight time and short layover as well. However I read somewhere that British airways are very strict on excess luggage and quite expensive too (I have 4-5 boxes). Please does anyone know how to ship stuff from Lagos? And how much? please help.

ps: if you have your COPR and haven’t landed yet, please make use of the various pre arrival services. They help, I am presently running online courses with two of them and I was also linked with a mentor in my field and an employment consultant.

Thanks for this information. May the land favour your family.
Got quick questions please:

1. For the goods following, did you send via airline or how? I mean how can i know the cargo service to use?

2. You mentioned a year to bring in other goods that follow. Are all these items duty free? I mean apart from the 120k you paid in Nigeria, did you have to pay anything else in Canada?

Thank you!!!

Before Landing No, but if u apply from canada and have PR 90 percent chance u get it..plus its 10 years for visiting.
less queue u can pick a close date and so much more. grin

I have PR visa but will not be landing till May. I have just applied to renew my US visa, I felt it was better for me to renew from Nigeria as I intend to go to the US on a road trip within weeks to getting to Canada, I may not have acquired sufficient employment history if I wait to renew when I land. I also still have the opportunity of using my current employment, pay stubs and account balance etc for the renewal. I am not scared of a refusal, it’s not the first US visa that I have gotten while on my job. Since I have not landed yet I cannot be said to be resident in Canada.

If it’s not a first visa, your concern should be what is more convenient and what works best for you.

Hi KW01, You will need to get a certificate of qualification from NCA (National Committee on Accreditation)- the first step to getting a Certificate of Qualification is to apply for an assessment of your credentials.
After reviewing an application, the NCA will issue an assessment report to the applicant listing the subjects and/or legal education that is required to ensure that the applicant’s legal education and training is equivalent to that provided by an approved law school in Canada.
In order to obtain an NCA Certificate of Qualification, most applicants are required to demonstrate competence in a number of subjects. Applicants may demonstrate competence in one of three ways:
successful completion of NCA examinations;
by registering as a special student in a Canadian common law degree program and successfully completing the assigned subjects as part of your program of studies;
a combination of (1) and (2).
Once an applicant has successfully completed the NCA requirements, the applicant may request a Certificate of Qualification by visiting the NCA portal

you can get more info on -

http://flsc.ca/national-committee-on-accreditation-nca/faqs/

You can start the process here before you get to cannyland
...... thank you very much...... are a lawyer in Canada or do you know any?

Hello everyone,

please do we have lawyers among our seniors? I am awaiting PPR and would like to know how it is for Nigeria trained lawyers in Canada?

I have done my research and I understand the process for qualification and joining the bar. Is it the same process for corporate lawyers (company secretaries). even though I have been called to the bar in Nigeria for several years I have never been in litigation, over the years I have worked with several companies as head of corporate affairs/company secretary and I am also a chartered secretary (ICSA). contract negotiation and drafting is one of my core strengths.

What are job prospects and pay like?

I intend to get a masters degree to help me break into the system and get an articling position more easily but I have always had a flair for psychology and I don't mind going back to school to study for it part time if its a good field to go into in Canada.

please forgive my rambling..... I will appreciate your advise/suggestions.

cc: blackbuddy, salford1 and all the seniors in the house.
