Celebrities / FG Saves $2m Annually From Local Cement Production by Laganch: 6:18pm On Mar 02, 2018
The Chairman of BUA Group, Alhaji Abdulsamad Rabiu, has said that the local cement manufacturers produce over 25 million tonnes cement thus saving the country two million dollars annually.

He said this while addressing State House Correspondents after a meeting of the Presidential Industrial Advisory Council chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa.

“The most important thing I think is that the cement industry in Nigeria will continue to save Nigeria a lot of foreign exchange.

“If for example, you look at what we have produced in Nigeria today, maybe 25 million tonnes to 30 million tonnes, if we quantify that in terms of foreign exchange it is almost two billion dollars per year.

“That is a lot of money being saved because if we do not have these cement plants definitely we have to import cement.

“And not only do we have to spend money in terms of foreign exchange import but the price of cement definitely would have been higher than what it is today,’’ he said.

Rabiu also spoke about the expansion of his company’s facilities in order to make more cement available for local consumption.

According to him, we will be inaugurating our Sokoto plant next quarter, early 2018, and also our Edo second cement line will come on stream probably by second quarter of next year.

Rabiu mentioned the reduction of price of Low Pour Fuel Oil (LPFO), and the appreciation of the local currency in the foreign exchange market as things that helped the sub-sector to grow.

“The foreign exchange has also come down; it is stable even though as we all know the cement industry does not really require a lot of foreign exchange.

“But the fall in foreign exchange rate has really helped in terms of the things that we import into Nigeria like spare parts, some raw materials like gypsum,’’ the industrialist said.

He acknowledged that a lot of issues to advance the industrial sector were discussed at the monthly Presidential Advisory Council meeting.

“As you all know this council is one that is trying to bring private sector together with the government to come up with ideas on how we can improve on a lot of things.

Education / ASUU Strike: Ngige Must Go by Laganch: 2:40pm On Aug 24, 2017
The Academic Staff Union of Universities has blasted the Minister for labour Chief Chris Ngige saying It is so unfortunate that the Minister has lost focus in his office and all he does at this critical time is to play the politics of Fatherism in Anambra election instead of negotiating with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and do everything possible to make sure the union is back to the classroom.

The Union which is currently holding a peaceful rally in Awka had on Monday declared an indefinite strike over Federal Government failure to keep to the 2009 agreement. If Ngige is a super leader, he should endeavour to address the protracted ASUU strike and bring an end to it by having proper negotiation with the union in the absence of the president. read more ....

Nairaland / General / Tony Nwoye Is A Cultist – Anambra Elites by Laganch: 12:03pm On Aug 23, 2017
Owing to the intervention of God in the person of Chief Willie Obiano, Anambra State has been enjoying a peace that seems to surpass all understanding. Kidnapping, armed robbery and other vices seem to be in the retreat as Akpokwudike has taken all steps to ensure that the people of Anambra can go about their daily businesses in the day and sleep well at night.

It is on this issue of security that we as a people cannot go back to Egypt as represented in the personality of a most deviant son of the state in the person of Hon. Tony Nwoye.

This one time NANS president who should not have been, because of his non-academic status at that point in time having been rusticated for cult related activities intends to become a governor of a state that has presented to Nigeria the likes of Zik, Ekwueme, Okadigbo, Asika, Kenneth Dike and so on. This is unacceptable to people like myself who suffered much in the dark days of Anambra.

Nwoye is associated with cultism and that was why he was rusticated from UNN in 1998. He later returned to Anambra where he engaged in thuggery, beating, killing and maiming his victim’s, such victims did include the late Barrister Barnabas Igwe and his pregnant wife who were so gruesomely murdered. Politics / Marginalization of the people of Urum, Amanuke and Isu-Aniocha in Awka-North LGA by Laganch: 12:00pm On Jun 26, 2017
Open letter to the Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state
Marginalization of the people of Urum, Amanuke and Isu-Aniocha in Awka-North LGA by the Anambra state government since time immemorial.

June 22nd 2017
His Excellency Chief Willie Obiano
Executive Governor of Anambra State
Governor’s Office
State Secretariat, Awka.
Your Excellency,
Marginalization of the people of Urum, Amanuke and Isu-Aniocha in Awka-North LGA by the Anambra state government since time immemorial.
Your excellency, please permit me to make this an open letter as the subsequent letters addressed to the state government has never been replied
One would think that being 7km from the capital will be a good omen for any people but this is not so and has never been so for the people of Urum, Amanuke and Isu-Aniocha communities. A people with a population of more than 62, 000 people (census, 2006) yet cannot boast of any state government project since the creation of the state.
Road;

In this 21st century and in the current Nigeria of our time one would think that towns and villages should at least be accessible by at worst a motorcycle( Okada) but this is not so for the towns mentioned above. With its richness in agricultural products, notable amongst them, Garri (the popular Garri Mgbakwu), Vegetables, Yam and Rice, one would think that giving a good access road not even to the farmlands but at least to the state capital which is 11km away or the link roads to other towns would help in boasting the internally generated revenue (IGR) of the state irrespective of how little it might be.
Sir, would you believe that the roads that link these three communities to the state have never for once received an attention either from the state or local government since the creation of Nigeria. This has left the roads a no go area to road transport operators even the popular Okada. This poor road network has not only left the communities undeveloped but has also pulverised the indigenes’ of these community as they find it difficult moving their farm produce to a place where it will at least be exchanged for their other pressing needs.
The then Peter Obi’s administration in a live TV program promised a caller (myself) that the roads will receive a good attention the moment the Awba-Ugbene road was completed which was just an on air promise that was never kept, only to turn around and construct a bypass from the communities that leads to his farm at the out sketch of the town making access to the major road even worst.
I do not intend to lecture you on the importance of these roads if constructed. But permit me to point out some few important point.
Decongesting Awka the state capital might not be an easy task for any government, this has sky rocketed the prices of rents and cost of living but with the construction of these roads the state capital which is a 10 minutes’ drive away from any of these locations will be drastically decongested. Also there will be reduction of cost of living as the farm products from these communities will be freely transported to the capital thereby abating the high cost of food stuffs in the market.
Health Care;
Tired of the campaign promises of politicians, the women of the community tasked themselves , built and handed over a health care centre to the state government which all they need do is assign a qualified health care practitioners to the centre but this too has become a reoccurring plea time after another. With the roads dilapidated, transportation means hardly found and if found very expensive, having access to a good medical care has become a big challenge to the people of these communities. We only dream and wish when we hear of donations made to hospitals and health care centres in other communities yet getting a health care administrator to our own community seems a big task for the state government.
Finally before i draw the curtain, I wish to draw your attention in some other related matters:
Our schools have more PTA paid teachers than the government paid teachers making access to education difficult as most parents see going to school
