androidFather: Angry Arik Air passengers block Abuja airport runway
Angry passengers yesterday evening Thursday September 26th blocked the runway of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, preventing planes from taking-off or landing.

The passengers, who disembarked from an Arik Air flight, blocked the Abuja runway because the flight they took from Abuja to Calabar was not allowed to land in Calabar around 5.30pm for safety reasons - the runway lightening was poor, forcing the pilot to return the passengers to Abuja.

CultureThat's A Mouthful! The Moment A Greedy Toad Tries To Swallow A Bat WHOLE Check by LajaLaba(op): 10:44am On Sep 25, 2013
This is not a bizarre new mutant creature, but a giant toad after swallowing a bat WHOLE.

The greedy toad tried to swallow an entire bat in one go - but could not fit the animal in its mouth.

Park ranger Yufani Olaya spotted the strange behaviour in the Cerros de Amotape national park in Peru.

He said the cane toad was sitting on the ground with its mouth open, waiting for dinner to appear.

Experts believe bats fly close to the ground to catch insects and Mr Olaya said this unfortunate bat almost flew straight into the toad's open mouth.

The amphibian clamped its powerful jaws around the furry critter, cramming it into its mouth.

The photograph captures the toad's battle to swallow the animal, despite the bat's wings and tail sticking out of its mouth.

Adam Leaché, assistant professor of herpetology at the University of Washington, said: "Toads are voracious and will eat pretty much anything that moves and can fit in their mouth."

Amazingly, the bat survived the ordeal, forcing the toad to spit it out.

Charles Linkem, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Washington, explained how the bat may have survived. "The toad may have tried to reposition its mouth to swallow and that was when the bat was able to escape."

This is the first time that scientists have seen a toad attempt to eat a bat in this manner.

Dr Linkem said: "It could be this population of toads have developed a strategy for feeding on low flying bats and that this is more common, but never observed before now."

Romance5-month-old Baby Killed By Airport Baggage Carousel In Spain by LajaLaba(op): 9:56am On Sep 25, 2013
Madrid (CNN) -- Spanish investigators are trying to figure out how a 5-month-old baby died on a baggage carousel at an airport in Alicante.

A spokeswoman for Spain's airport authority, AENA, said Thursday it's not clear how the baby ended up on the baggage belt for oversized luggage.

"The baby was on the baggage carousel, but could not have gotten there alone. Someone had to put the baby there. I don't know how the baby got there," said the airport spokeswoman, who by custom is not identified.

The infant's mother, an American woman, arrived at the airport late Wednesday on a flight from London's Gatwick airport with her baby and another young child, the spokeswoman said. The father, who is Canadian, was already there waiting at the Alicante airport, she added.

The baggage carousel is a flat, black rubber-type belt that moves only in one direction and is only activated when oversized bags are sent out on it for pickup. It's several feet long and passengers can stand on either side of it or at the receiving end, the spokeswoman said.

She said it was not immediately known if the infant was placed on the belt while it was stopped, or once it had started moving.

An unidentified security officer at the airport told CNN affiliate Atlas she didn't see the incident, but was told that "the mother apparently put (the baby) down on the conveyer belt when she went to reach for something. He was crushed by the conveyer belt and it killed him."

Airport medical personnel rushed to the scene but were unable to revive the infant, the spokeswoman said.

The Spanish Civil Guard said the baby's death appears to be an accident, but an investigation is under way.

At a loss: Comforting grieving parents

After the baby was pronounced dead, the family had to wait for a judge to arrive, by Spanish law, so that the body could be moved. Civil Guards took statements from the parents at the airport, the airport spokeswoman said.

The baggage belt for oversized luggage -- which includes infant car seats and baby strollers -- is at one end of a large baggage claims hall at the Alicante airport, which handles 9 million passengers a year, the spokeswoman said.

The baggage carousel is in a secure area, and passengers go through it to claim their bags before they exit into the public arrivals hall. The father of the baby would not have had access to that area, the airport spokeswoman said.

Civil Guard and National Police spokesmen confirmed the nationalities of the mother and father as American and Canadian, respectively.

A U.S. Embassy spokesman in Madrid said that U.S. Consular officials are aware of the incident and are providing assistance.

A spokeswoman for the Canadian Embassy in Madrid said she could not comment and referred inquiries to the Canadian government's Department of Foreign Affairs in Ottawa.

Spanish newspaper El Pais reported the family had come to the Alicante area, on Spain's Mediterranean coast, for vacation, but authorities would not immediately confirm that.

IslamFrench Court Fines Mother For 3-year-old's "Jihad...i Am A Bomb" T-shirt by LajaLaba(op): 5:33pm On Sep 24, 2013
PARIS (Reuters) - A woman who sent her three-year-old son - called Jihad - to school in a T-shirt marked "Jihad, Born September 11, I am a bomb" was fined and given a suspended jail sentence by a French court on Friday.

Bouchra Bagour was found guilty of condoning a criminal act, along with her brother Zeyad, who bought the child the T-shirt recalling Islamist militant group al Qaeda's attacks on New York on September 11, 2001, that killed close to 3,000 people.

The matter ended up in court after Jihad went to his nursery school in September 2012 wearing the T-shirt, upsetting staff and prompting a local official to take legal action.

Overturning an earlier acquittal, the appeals court in the southern town of Nimes fined the woman 2,000 euros ($2,700) and gave her a one-year suspended jail sentence, doubling that fine and suspended jail sentence for the uncle.
RomanceFamily Hosts 200 Homeless People For Dinner After Daughter's Wedding Gets Called by LajaLaba(op): 5:12pm On Sep 24, 2013
When an engaged couple calls off the wedding, it is usually a time of sadness and anger. But one family in Atlanta found a way to turn a terrible situation into a beautiful one. Carol and Willie Fowler's daughter Tamara was set to get married at the Villa Christina catering hall, when the wedding was called off just 40 days before the event. Initially the Fowlers were upset to hear that the lavish gathering they had planned and paid for was not going to happen. Then they had a genius and generous idea: They invited 200 of the city's homeless to feast on the four-course meal that would have been part of Tamara's wedding reception.

The Fowler family called Elizabeth Omilami from the Hosea Feed the Hungry organization for her help in getting the group together. At first Omilami thought she was being pranked! Carol Fowler said that even daughter Tamara attended the event, adding, "She was also very delighted to see and know that others had an opportunity to enjoy something, rather than just allow it to go to waste." Children make up about 70 percent of Atlanta's homeless, so to make the dinner more fun for them, a clown was hired for their entertainment. The event was titled "The First Annual Fowler Family Celebration of Love," and the family says it plans on hosting another charity dinner next year. It's a great example of how you can turn any bad situation into a positive one.

PoliticsWitness: Kenya Mall Attackers Target Non-muslims by LajaLaba(op): 4:21pm On Sep 21, 2013
NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Gunmen threw grenades and opened fire Saturday killing at least 22 people in an attack targeting non-Muslims at an upscale mall in Kenya's capital that was hosting a children's day event, a Red Cross official and witnesses said.

The attackers remained inside and firing subsided as military surrounded the mall hours after the attack. People continued to trickle out from hiding places within the Westgate mall, which is frequented by expatriates and rich Kenyans in Nairobi's affluent Westlands neighborhood.

Kenya Red Cross official Abbas Gullet said at least 22 people were killed in the attack that police blamed on terrorists. He said the death toll would likely rise.

"We are treating this as a terrorist attack," said police chief Benson Kibue, adding that there are likely no more than 10 attackers involved.

Police did not say what group was responsible for the attack.

RomanceAustrian Woman Spends Months With Dead Boyfriend by LajaLaba(op): 4:14pm On Sep 21, 2013
Even a hopeless romantic must admit that there's a time when you have to give up on your boyfriend -- and that time is when he starts to decompose.

Austrian police are saying a 66-year-old Austrian woman lived for almost a year with the corpse of her 85-year-old partner. They found him swaddled in blankets and in desperate need of embalming.

Now, investigators are trying to figure out whether she was trying to collect his pension, or if she was just a bit kinky.

The news comes as Australian police say another man was in his apartment more than a year before anyone could smell that he was dead.

PoliticsGunmen Storm Nairobi Mall, 15 Killed-red Cross by LajaLaba(op): 4:02pm On Sep 21, 2013
NAIROBI (Reuters) - Gunmen stormed a shopping mall in Nairobi on Saturday killing at least 15 people in what Kenya's government said might be a terrorist attack, and sending scores fleeing into shops, a cinema and onto the streets in search of safety.

Sporadic gun shots could be heard hours after the assault started as soldiers surrounded the mall and police combed the building, hunting down the attackers shop by shop. Some local television stations reported hostages had been taken, but there was no official confirmation.

The Somali militant group al Shabaab, which Kenya blames for shootings, bombings and grenade attacks against churches and the security forces, had threatened to strike the Westgate mall, popular with the city's expatriate community. The chain of attacks follows action by Kenyan forces against al Qaeda-linked militants in Somalia two years ago.
