From personal experience, I had no issues with cracking, and I planted during the rainy season. You should probably ask about the agronomic practices.

Why not become an angel investor? You can invest in early tech startups and also get a role when they secure funding.
mayprince:
Hello Nairalanders,

I have been working remotely for a tech startup based in Germany for over four years now. However, my contract with them expired a few months ago, and there is no possibility of renewal. The reality for me right now is that it's tough to find foreign companies where I can earn in international currency while living cheaply in Nigeria.

I want to leverage my experience from the German startup to secure a position with a Nigerian tech company. Although I haven't found an opportunity yet, I believe it should be easier to secure a role with a local tech startup. However, I'm worried the pay might be significantly lower—perhaps just 15-30% of what I earned at the German company—which would feel disempowering.

As an alternative, I'm considering starting my own business with my savings (approximately 7 million naira). This could be something I manage alone or pursue alongside a position in the Nigerian tech ecosystem.

I'd appreciate advice on how best to proceed. Is it too early to consider entrepreneurship? I really need guidance from professionals on how to navigate these career and business options.

Quick background about me: I'm 26 years old and have just completed my NYSC.

I've sent an email request. I want to send across a lucrative proposal that I feel you'll be interested in.

Hello great investors and business experts in the house.
A friend of mine just relocated to Nigeria 🇳🇬 from USA, and wishes to set up a profitable business with 10million naira, he wants ideas on the type of business that will give good return on investment...

AmgAmg:
I recently received an inheritance and now have over ₦150-million just sitting here, doing nothing. I need solid advice on how best to invest this money. I’m looking for a moderate to high-yield investment that won’t be affected by the depreciation of the naira.

Let’s be real ….. we’ve all seen how bad the naira has devalued over the years. The last thing I want is to put my money into something, only to wake up in a few years and realize its value has been slashed into half. You know what I mean. Even if the business is in naira, it has to be highly profitable so that currency depreciation won’t eat away it.

I don’t want meaningless or negative suggestions…. only serious, well-thought-out opinions . I’m open to meeting up as well….. to discuss solid business ideas, and trust me, a handsome reward awaits whoever brings the best proposal.

That said, let me be clear:
I have the Commissioner of Police and EFCC on speed dial. If anyone thinks this is an opportunity for a scam, just know that any fraudulent attempt will be dealt with the full extent of the law.

If you have a genuine, profitable, and well-researched idea, let’s talk.

Mrdellychy:
I do not outrightly condemn grafting, the guy is a newbie and he has already transplanted, grafting is not an option for him at that stage, I only suggested options with which he can pick from to manage his crop since he has transplanted.
I don't do grafting nor use grafted seedlings and I will never do. I have better cultivars with better yield ( even more than double the yield of what you quoted above) and I have no worry about BW.

AgricultureRe: Step By Step Improve Way Of Cultivating TOMATOES by Lanjonath(m): 9:50am On May 04, 2025
Just seeing this...Is not ideal? If you spend 30% more on your operation cost and double your yield you feel that's not ideal?

When checking the Internet for planting practices, try to explore beyond what is practiced in Nigeria. You can't say you did that and saw grafting tomatoes isn't ideal. The Internet is littered with use cases and research papers comparing the yield and disease resistance of different rootsocks.

At the end it's just down to preference, do you want to spend a bit more and go through a little more stress to double your outcome. Whichever you decide,I I don't think there's a wrong answer to this. Let me drop this here before I close this subject, I know a farmer in the SW who grafted indeterminate tomatoes last year and averaged 8kg in open field...this is where agriculture is headed.

I remember how people here nearly lynched some people for advocating for drip tape years ago (should be a decade by now) saying it wasn't necessary, well here we are today.

My point in all this? While we're going for what's available, we should be open minded to change and keep improving our techniques to boost our output

Jaywrld:
I have the same thought too
Grafting is not really ideal. If you search the internet the best way to avoid BW is planting resistant varieties
I haven't tried grafting though but I don't think it would be worth it
99% success rate that's questionable
If varieties like Rambo f1 can yield 2kg per plant then it's okay with the strong resistance to bacterial wilt it possesses
AgricultureRe: Step By Step Improve Way Of Cultivating TOMATOES by Lanjonath(m): 9:34am On May 04, 2025
I've heard things about vegetables and land atrazine has been sprayed on. 2yrs is a long time though, so try it and let us know.

Jaywrld:
But pls I still need to ask
Tomatoes hasn't been grown on my farm before it's only cassava two years ago it has been a virgin land since
I want to know my chances of getting a good crop out of 100%
I also fumigated the land with Neem oil prior to transplanting
AgricultureRe: Step By Step Improve Way Of Cultivating TOMATOES by Lanjonath(m): 9:32am On May 04, 2025
Nice!! I wish you the best.

Jaywrld:
I think i would stick with Rambo
It would make sense for a newbie like me and when I advance in knowledge I can graft or go into greenhouse farming directly which is my plan
AgricultureRe: Step By Step Improve Way Of Cultivating TOMATOES by Lanjonath(m):
It definitely isn't cheap because even the RZ tomatoes aren't cheap seedforth the guys that bring in RZ seeds also sell rootstock (something they won't do if they didn't have customers who were buying, but you usually have to pre-order).

But leave the farmer who's still trapped with last decades knowledge to wallow in his lack of knowledge. Because you don't see every Tom, Dick and Harry doing something doesn't mean it isn't being done. I know 3 farmers who average 3.8kg+ per plant with zero BW incidents and there's also a method that was shared by Pistota on how to crash the price of tomato rootstock completely (but you need to learn to crawl before you learn to run) and I know someone who's already doing this.

But if you decide to do Rambo or Platinum, they're also good cultivars like I said earlier.

Jaywrld:
Is the rootstock expensive and how do I get it
AgricultureRe: Step By Step Improve Way Of Cultivating TOMATOES by Lanjonath(m): 7:28am On May 04, 2025
Smh sha, ignorance is a disease. When you don't know something ask and listen those who know and have actually done it. Especially when you meet people who do things commercially.

All the primitive measures you mentioned won't work for RZ seeds, if your soil has a heavy BW resistance, been there done those years ago. They'll work with Rambo, plantinum and the likes but with RZ you'll still end up losing around 30% of your crops (which makes no sense considering the price of the seeds).

I thought you'd mention nuking the soil with sulfur then restore the beneficial organisms after, but nah you haven't even gone that far.

That said a number of serious farmers already graft their tomatoes and have abandoned the primitive 1.5kg - 2kg per plant yield.

Mrdellychy:
Lol, pls ignore him. The grafting option is not for you or are you into research and development? (Maybe those growing perennial crops may find it useful).
You should hav asked him to name just only one tomato rootstock that can be grafted and give 99% BW resistant cultivar as he claimed. Even the Almighty research and development firms like East-west seed, technisem, etc...the best they can offer is 50% (intermediate) BW resistance cultivar.
AgricultureRe: Step By Step Improve Way Of Cultivating TOMATOES by Lanjonath(m): 7:21am On May 04, 2025
I just did, read again

Jaywrld:
From your previous talks you must be growing rz varieties so can you explain how you manage to successfully grow them
AgricultureRe: Step By Step Improve Way Of Cultivating TOMATOES by Lanjonath(m): 12:47pm On May 03, 2025
Grafting with a resistant rootstock that's the only sure way to grant you 99% success anything else and you're playing with fire (speaking from experience). Other methods (Copper, Biological, Ph) you can try with cultivars that have some level of resistance but with RZ seeds that have zero resistance, if you aren't grafting, you're basically playing Russian Roulette with your investment.

To graft, you need to know how to get the right rootstock and the technical know-how to graft.

Jaywrld:
Pls 🙏 just tell me how I can handle the bacterial wilt disease in gamhar rz
I transplanted them last week and ive been checking for signs of wilting there have been none so far

Pls 🙏 enlighten me on the managerial practices it woild be nice to learn from someone like you considering you farm the same cultivar in the same region as me

I need to know how to manage my crops come the bacterial wilt, so as to not lose my investment
AgricultureRe: Step By Step Improve Way Of Cultivating TOMATOES by Lanjonath(m): 1:07pm On May 01, 2025
If you can handle Gamhar, its the best. As for Rambo, if you're good you can get 2kg per plant.
Sorry, I dont know where you can get in Abeokuta but you can definitely check online for that.

Jaywrld:
Thank you for the reply
Pls what's the average yield per Rambo f1 plants and where can I get the seeds in abeokuta
Also is it worth doing gamhar on the open field even if I can manage it
AgricultureRe: Step By Step Improve Way Of Cultivating TOMATOES by Lanjonath(m): 10:25pm On Apr 27, 2025
When it comes to yield, Garmah and Jarrah are head and shoulders above the rest and it's not even close but like I said, you need it be able to handle BW to do RZ tomatoes.

In terms of yield I'll take Rambo over Platinum and Platinum over Padma. I've never planted Cobra. And yes Padma is resistant to BW

Jaywrld:
Is Padma resistant to bacterial wilt too
Between Padma, cobra, platinum and Rambo which one has bigger fruits and more productive thanks 👍
AgricultureRe: Step By Step Improve Way Of Cultivating TOMATOES by Lanjonath(m): 12:34am On Apr 24, 2025
Get a resistant variety or graft with a resistant rootstock.

bassey25:
Interesting! What's a better way to handle bacterial wilt in tomatoes
AgricultureRe: Step By Step Improve Way Of Cultivating TOMATOES by Lanjonath(m): 3:38pm On Apr 23, 2025
You can try Platinum or Rambo if you're a newbie. They have solid resistance and good yield. But if you know how to handle BW and have good management and nutrition, gamhar and jarrah will double their yield.

Jaywrld:
Which hybrid variety do you recommend then
AgricultureRe: Step By Step Improve Way Of Cultivating TOMATOES by Lanjonath(m): 3:35pm On Apr 23, 2025
Very very different. Bacterial Wilt when checking for resistance is represented by the "BW/Rs" abbreviation which Fusarium Wilt is usually "F / Fol" and Verticillium Wilt "V/Va". Even the Seedforth Agro guys will tell you is has zero resistance to Bacterial Wilt if you ask.

If you plant in open field here in the SW without knowing how to handle that, I can guarantee that you'll easily lose 50% or more depending on the level of infestation in your soil.

That said, Gamhar and Jarrah are my favorite tomato cultivars.

Jaywrld:
Gamhar rz f1 has a strong resistance to fusarium and verticilium wilt
Is bacterial wilt any different
AgricultureRe: Step By Step Improve Way Of Cultivating TOMATOES by Lanjonath(m): 2:22pm On Apr 20, 2025

It's worth all the hype and then some if you know how to handle it.

Hasib04:
Do you think mydas worth the hype?
AgricultureRe: Step By Step Improve Way Of Cultivating TOMATOES by Lanjonath(m): 8:11pm On Apr 18, 2025
Unless you know how to handle BW, which most here don't know how to, you're basically throwing your money away doing Gamhar in Open field.

Jaywrld:
Is it gamhar rz you cultivated?
If not then why? its also a determinate tomato meant for open field with a good yield and resistance to various diseases
