Laying Dell's Streak to one side, you can blame Samsung for starting this whole VLP™ business with its 5.3- inch Galaxy Note, which sold in more-than-decent numbers, as much to the surprise of its maker as anyone else, I suspect. Its successor, the Galaxy Note 2, upped the stakes by featuring a 5.5- inch screen and promptly sold in huge quantities. At the time I called it the “most complete digital communications device known to man”, words I stand by. The moral here? Bigger, as far as Joe Public is concerned at least, is quite clearly better. So it should come as no surprise that the new Galaxy Note 3 takes things a step further, with a 5.7- inch display, a 2.3GHz quad-core processor and 3GB of RAM. That’s a pretty impressive all-round technical specification but does it make the Note 3 the daddy of VLPs and, more to the point, better than the Sony Xperia Z Ultra? But is it worth twice the price of its Samsung stablemate, the Galaxy Mega 6.3? Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3: even bigger screen than before – but not a bigger device Despite its larger screen, the Note 3 is no wider and even slightly thinner and lighter than its predecessor. This is thanks to a thinner bezel which means more screen in less chassis. It’s still a bit on the large size: 151mm tall, 79mm wide and 8.3mm thick. But it’s noticeably smaller than Sony’s imposing Ultra. The look With a certain inevitability, the front of the Note 3 borrows its design cues from the Galaxy S4, complete with chrome-effect speaker grille and silver-edged physical home button. Around the edge is a faux-chrome plastic band which looks just a little tacky to my eyes. At the top you’ll find a 3.5mm headphone jack while the bottom edge houses a USB 3.0 power and data port, a solitary speaker and the stylus slot. The faux leather back will fool no one Tucked into the sides are the volume and power buttons but these aren’t as cleverly placed as those on the Z Ultra. The volume rocker is too high to be easily accessible by either thumb or finger no matter which hand you’re holding the device in. The glossy hyperglaze back of the Note 2 has been replaced with a leather-effect, but still plastic, cover. Make no mistake: it doesn’t feel like leather, though the rubbery texture and fake stitching may fool some folk at first glance. It does make the Note 3 easier to hold than the Note 2 or the Z Ultra, though. But since most Note users seem to swap the standard back panel for a flip cover, this change really makes no odds. The Note 3’s 5.7-inch display boasts a 1920 x 1080 resolution which is the same as the Galaxy S4 and the Xperia Z Ultra. Given that the Note 3’s screen is larger than the former but smaller than the latter, it has a higher pixel density (386dpi) than the Ultra (344dpi) but a lower one than the S4 (441dpi). The naked eye really can’t tell the difference, though, with even tiny web page text rendering pin-sharp. It’s a Note so it comes with a stylus Videos and images look bold and vivid on the Note 3’s screen thanks to the rich colours and deep blacks of the “Super AMOLED” OLED display Samsung has used. It’s extremely bright and rather garish – at times too garish, which can make some content look over-saturated. There are various screen modes you can choose from to tone things down – though I have to say I prefer the more natural hues of the Z Ultra’s screen. The Note 3 runs the latest version of Android, 4.3 Jelly Bean. On top of that is Samsung’s TouchWiz overlay, which adds a plethora of extra functions – not least support for the very handy S Pen stylus and the option to run certain apps in windows. You also get Air gestures, which allows you to swipe above the screen to scroll through images without touching the phablet and the same eye-tracking technology from the S4 that will pause video when you look away from the screen. They’re all features that are fun to play with once or twice but some are not really much more than clever and occasional diversions. http://www.womencitizen.com/technology-22/samsung-galaxy-note-3-once-twice-three-times-a-very-large-phone-816.html

Shanghai - A young Chinese couple are facing criminal punishment for “selling” their daughter and using part of the proceeds to buy an Apple iPhone, state media said on Friday. Shanghai prosecutors have brought a case against the couple for human trafficking after they illegally put their third child up for adoption through online postings and accepted money for the baby, the Liberation Daily reported. Investigators found the mother, whose full name was not given, used the money to buy an iPhone, high- end sports shoes and other products, also online, it said. Apple's products are wildly popular in China, where a teenager sold his kidney and used the funds to buy an iPhone and iPad in an incident widely reported last year. But the couple told police that they wanted the girl to have a better upbringing than they could afford, since they already had two children. “Giving away the child was not for obtaining benefits, but giving the child better guarantees,” one said. Shanghai police and prosecutors could not be immediately reached for comment. Shanghai media reports did not give the amount the couple received, but their online postings referred to 30 000 yuan and 50 000 yuan ($4 900 and $8 200). Apple last month launched the iPhone 5s, including a gold-coloured model, and the more budget- conscious iPhone 5c in China. - Sapa-AFP http://www.iol.co.za/news/world/couple-sell-daughter-for-iphone-1.1593850 |
Ella Mensah isn't exactly a household name in Nigeria, but one to reckon with in Ghana, where she plies her trade. She was recently in Nigeria to shoot a film where she met our reporter. Her journey into the make-believe world started in 2008 and in a space of five years the sexy Thespian has had more than 30 movies in her kitty. In this chat with WG, she talks about herself and what makes her tick. Excerpts: Tell us about yourself? I'm Ella Mensah, a Ghanaian actress based in South Africa and Ghana. I'm doing some movie shooting right now in Nigeria. I came here for the first time on October 1st last year, and since then, I have about 30 movies. I've been here for a year, but I come and go. So far, I'm loving it. How did you start acting? I started acting in a very funny way. I was doing my media attachment in a TV station in Ghana called Metro TV and a colleague of mine told me she was going for a movie audition, so I went with her. One of the producers asked me to join in the auditioning. I just tried it and I was given one scene, my first movie ever ' Crime to Fight' featuring Majid Michel and Nadia Buhari. I acted the role of a prostitute. I was in the industry for six months while doing my attachment, then I left Ghana for South Africa. When I came back to Ghana, I shot a movie with a Nigerian director featuring me and Van Vicker. Afterwards, the director called me and told me, "I have a job for you In Nigeria", That was how I came here and the rest is history. What has the experience been like? So far, so good. A lot of challenges here and there. When I came back , I had a baby. As a mum, I was a bit fat and it was difficult to get some roles. I had to work on myself, I stopped breastfeeding and all those motherhood things. It took me a year to come back after that three-year break. Now I love every minute of it. It's like I'm living my dream. This is all I wanted and it's perfect for me. Can you name some of the movies you've featured in? Being here in Nigeria for a year, I have about 30 movies. So far, 14 of them are out. Some of them are: Dirty Marriage, Treated like a Lady, Alingo Babes, Kukere Babes, My Private Part, Witches in Okoko, Blood and Tears and so on. Are your parents supportive? My mum has been there for me. She loves what I do and she's so proud of me. My dad wanted me to still be a journalist. It was his idea from the beginning. He wasn't initially in support of my acting career, but he's coming around now. You actually studied journalism? I started as a broadcast journalist. I studied Mass Communication and Media Science at the University of Ghana, Accra. What was growing up like? I grew up in an average family. We didn't have too much, but we were content with what we had. I grew up with my mum and three brothers. Although, I had step- brothers and sisters from my dad's side. It was okay, we loved each other and shared everything among ourselves. Can you recall some memorable moments in the course of your career? You know, while in Ghana all these years, there were these particular actor and actress that I really wanted to see - Mike Ezuruonye and Genevieve Nnaji. I finally met Mike and shot a movie with him. Right now, he's my best friend, in fact he even knows I'm here. So when I finally met him and we clicked, I was like " Omg! I'm really living my dreams". These are the kinds of people, way back, I used to admire, I wanted to see their faces, now they are my friends and colleagues. They even call me and we hang out together and all that. When I met Genevieve and Mama Gee (Patience Ozokwor) for the first time, it was so nice. Do you have regrets? I don't regret anything in life, whether good or bad. Everything that happens to me, happens for a reason. Would you have been a journalist if you weren't acting? Journalism was my dad's dream that I was living for him. But for now, if I wasn't acting, I think I would be a banker, be a reserved person. You know acting exposes you and you don't keep anything to yourself. It is today this, tomorrow that. You google your name and you see so many stories about you, that it baffles you and you wonder "Did I really do that". If I wasn't acting, I think I would live a more reserved life. But I love what I do and everything comes with the good, the bad and the ugly. Besides acting, what else do you do? Besides acting, I'm not doing anything. Though I'm now about to open an NGO in Ghana for single mothers. I grew up with a single mother, I saw the challenges she went through. I want to start an NGO where every month, I can donate food and things to them, because I know what single mothers go through. Was your mum a single mother? Yes, I met my dad for the first time when I was nineteen years old. That's why we don't have that kind of very close relationship. It was also why I tried to live his dream, be a journalist for him because I wanted him to love me. But I realised that it wasn't worth it, my mum's love was okay for me. So what I really plan to do with my team is to open an NGO for single mothers. What has fame robbed you of? You don't have a private live any more. Your private life becomes a public thing. People always speculate, insinuate, think you should do this or that. But they are not in your shoes, so they don't really know how you feel. Sometimes, people judge you based on the decisions you make, but they don't know the options you had that made you take that particular decision. Anyway, we still work things out. What makes you happy? A lot of things make me happy. I love singing though I have a bad voice (laughs). I also love dancing. Seeing my son's face also makes me happy. Are you married? I'm not married and I'm not single. I'm in a relationship. Though I'm no longer with my son's dad. My son and his dad are in South Africa now. What physical attribute would you say is your selling point? (Laughs) I heard that word "selling point" for the first time in Nigeria. Most of my friends say it's my lips and I think it's true. Then my height, my face and my ass. People are attracted to different things. Personally, I think it's my face, height and lips. What's your opinion on the break-up of celebrity marriages? Some of these marriages weren't based on love in the first place. It's good you get married to someone who knows you so well as to overlook some of those things you do on screen. Someone who knows that no matter how much another man kisses and touches you, you'll still come back to him. It's good you marry someone who loves you for who you are, not because you're famous. I don't want to get married and divorce. I grew up with a single mum, it wasn't fun. I was happy, but I think I would have been much happier if my dad was there. In marriage, communication and understanding is very important. Let me take myself for example, I'm dating a businessman, he's not a celebrity. When I'm with him, I'm Ella - his woman. I don't behave like Ella - the actress who has a manager, a personal assistant, a costumier, a make-up artist and all the pampering. We tend to be overspoilt sometimes with people at our beck and call doing things for us. When I'm with him, I'm with him as Ella. If he wants me to cook for him, I cook for him; If he wants me to sweep the room, I will. We sometimes forget that when it comes to a man and woman relationship, a woman still has to be submissive. My mum always chips this in my head, because sometimes I forget. What's your take on actresses sleeping their way through for roles? This thing is almost everywhere. When you love and work towards something, you don't have to give your body to get it. True, there are some lousy producers and directors out there who would want to sleep with you, but if you know your worth and what you want, you won't do it. He might sleep with you and give you a role but that will not bring you out. And if he gives you the role and you don't interpret it well, he won't call you again. He has already slept with you for free. Of course, men will always come, but you let them know your stand. I've never slept with anybody to get a role, I always go for auditions. Sometimes, I'll just be at home sleeping and someone will call me to say, " I have a job for you". Do you intend going into movie production? Once you're in front of the camera, you don't want to leave. But a time will come when you have to make way for the upcoming ones. You can't remain a superstar forever. Most of the superstars are relaxing, that's why most of us are coming up. A time will come when producers will not demand for you much and that's why we end up producing ourselves so that our faces will still be there. So I may or may not go into production. I'm not certain for now. Would you act nude for any reason? No, I don't see why I should. Fine, I don't mind showing certain parts of my body, especially when playing a seductive role. I can wear a bum short or maybe a net top. But I'll never go nude, not even for ten million dollars! What's the essence? What's your relationship with your colleagues like? I'm cool with them, though not everybody will like you. Some will smile at you and when you turn, they just hiss. But I respect them, especially the senior ones. We're okay. Who are those you look up to in the industry? In Nigeria specifically, I'll like to be in the shoes of Genevieve. She's so endowed, I like her brand. After so many years, she still remains a household name. Though I can't be her, I'm a different person, I'm Ella. I just hope to become something similar or even better. Define your style? Freestyle. I'm funky, sometimes tomboyish. I also do vintage. My image as Ella - the actress is different from my image as Ella - the girl next door. When you google my name, you see so many crazy, wild pictures of me. But you could meet the other side of me on the road trying to pick up a taxi with my car packed somewhere. So I try to balance it though I make mistakes, I'm not perfect. I'm also a go- getter, if I love and want something, I'll push till I get it. What's your advice to aspiring actresses? If acting is what you want to do, go to an acting school and improve yourself. You have to love acting. Some people just come in because they want to be on TV. Sometimes you might be crying in your personal life and you're required to laugh on set. Acting is not as easy as people think it is. Learn a little about acting and always be ready. When opportunity meets preparation, success is sure. Go for auditions. Don't go and see any man in a hotel room, because that will not make you a star. One day, your time will come and you'll be picked from the crowd. http://m.allafrica.com/stories/201310180340.html/ |
Popular American television comedy-drama-mystery series, Desperate Housewives is to get an African remake. According to Nigerian network EbonyLife, they have joined forces with Disney to give the award winning show an African adaptation. There’s good and there’s evil globally,” Mo Abudu, CEO and Executive Chairman of EbonyLife TV was quoted saying. The original US show, which starred big names such as Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross and Eva Longoria aired for 8 seasons between 2004 and 2012 and managed to win numerous industry awards. HTC's newest phone, the 5.9-inch HTC One Max, includes a fingerprint scanner -- although unlike the one in Apple's latest iPhone, it's located on the back of the device. The HTC One Max will go on sale globally later this month and is the company's latest attempt to revive its smartphone business. The Android handset is essentially a larger version of HTC's critically acclaimed One flagship phone, with otherwise similar specs. Unlike the HTC One, the One Max can be locked or unlocked with a touch on its fingerprint scanner. The scanner can also be used to launch up to three favorite apps, each triggered by a different finger, HTC said Monday. The phone has a 5.9-inch 1080p HD screen, a quad-core 1.7 GHz processor from Qualcomm, and 2GB of RAM. The front-facing camera has a resolution of 2.1 megapixels, while the 4 megapixel rear-facing camera uses HTC's UltraPixel design, which the company says uses a larger image sensor to offer better low-light performance. Talk time on the WCDMA version of the phone can reach 25 hours on its 3300 mAh battery. The One Max also has a microSD card slot for expandable memory, a feature not found in the U.S. version of the HTC One. It will be on sale in 16GB and 32 GB versions. The HTC One Max arrives just a month after Samsung unveiled its own large-screen phone, the Galaxy Note 3. The Note 3 has a slightly smaller screen than the One Max, at 5.7 inches, with a 13-megapixel camera rear-facing camera, 3GB of RAM, and a 3,200 mAh battery. HTC and its Korean rival have been sparring on product strategy, and both have previously launched smaller versions of their flagship phones. In HTC's case, it was called the HTC One mini and unveiled in July. Despite positive reviews for its phones, HTC has been struggling to lift its earnings. Earlier this month, it posted a loss of about US$101 million in its third quarter. http://www.pcworld.com/article/2054540/htc-one-max-packs-fingerprint-scanner-59inch-screen.html |

Remember when people used personal computers - desktops and laptops - to check email, view video and keep tabs on Facebook? Back in that far-away era, I'd have several windows open for Web browsers, a word processor, a photo editor and sometimes a reader for PDF documents. I miss that capability on mobile devices, particularly on full-size tablets with a decent amount of display space. With iPads and Android tablets, I'm typically limited to one window displayed at a time; other apps run in the background, out of sight. With Windows 8 tablets, I can run two windows side by side, but I'm constrained in what I can do with them. It gets better with the Windows 8.1 update due out next week, but it's still not the free-for- all I had with PCs. So I marvelled at a pair of multitasking features that come with Samsung's new tablet, formally called Galaxy Note 10.1 - 2014 Edition. Sporting a 10.1-inch display, measured diagonally, the Note tablet goes on sale in the US starting Thursday at a starting price of $550. The first of the multitasking features, called Multi-Window, has been available in Samsung devices for about a year, but it works with many more apps now. You can run two apps side by side, such as Facebook on one side and YouTube video on the other. Like Windows 8 tablets, you're limited to just two apps. You can change how much of the screen each one takes, a capability coming with Windows 8.1, but you can't choose to have a window take up just the top left corner, the way you can on PCs. In addition, Multi- Window isn't a universal feature. Apps for Netflix and Hulu won't work, for instance. You currently have about 18 apps to choose from, including Facebook and a variety of Google and Samsung apps. With that limitation, it's nice that Samsung Electronics Co. is supplementing Multi-Window with a feature called Pen Window. With it, simply draw a box on the screen with the included stylus, and choose one of seven apps to open in a new window. Do it again and again until you open all seven apps, if you wish. That's nine in all, counting the two with Multi- Window. Each Pen Window app appears in a window that floats over your main app (or two apps if you use Multi-Window). You can move that window around on your screen and resize it, just as you can on PCs. Need a break from it? Just minimize it into a small dot and move it out of the way. Like Multi-Window, you're restricted in what apps you can use with Pen Window, though I expect more to get added over time. For now, Pen Window on the tablet works with YouTube, the calculator, the alarm clock, your contacts list, the Web browser and two chat apps - Samsung's ChatOn and Google's Hangouts. I like the fact that you can open all of them and keep them out of the way in a minimised state. That way, it's just one click when you need the calculator and one click when you're done. The iPad doesn't do that. Amazon's Kindle Fire doesn't do that. Other Android tablets don't do that. Windows 8.1 won't do that - at least not in the tablet-style viewing mode that Microsoft prefers you stick with. You'll have to go to the classic, desktop mode to resize windows, which defeats the purpose of having Windows 8 or 8.1. Windows 8.1 will go further than Multi-Window in letting you run up to four apps side by side, but that works only on larger screens, not portable tablets. Beyond multitasking, the new Note tablet offers a My Magazine mode giving you personalised highlights, such as news topics of interest, content from your social media feeds and suggestions on things to do and see, based on your current location. It's a good concept, though Facebook isn't available through it yet. The new tablet also gives you quick access to the tools you can accomplish with its stylus. Pen Window is one. Another feature lets you add notes to a screenshot of what you see. Another lets you clip a section of a Web page and store it with a Web link. Unfortunately, not everything worked. Text recognition was poor. I'm supposed to be able to jot down an email address or a phone number with the stylus and have that handwriting converted into a contacts entry. But the device constantly confuses the letters "o" and "l" with the numerals "0" and "1." Pen Window also is more difficult than necessary to set up. You need to take out the stylus for an Air Command tool to appear on the screen. You choose Pen Window, then draw a box on your screen with your stylus. Then you choose the app you want to open. Do all of that again to get additional apps, after figuring out how to get Air Command again with your stylus already out. It would have been simpler to have a button on the home screen that you can tap with your finger or stylus. In addition, Samsung could have done more with the apps in minimized state. Google's chat app is reduced to a circular icon. It could have flashed or changed colors to notify me of a new chat message, rather than make me open and close it regularly to check. The tablet's back is still made of plastic, but it feels like leather - an improvement over previous Samsung devices. The tablet does feel heavy, at 1.2 pounds, but that's still lighter than the 1.4 pounds for the full-size iPad. If you want light, wait until early November for the large-size version of Amazon's Kindle Fire HDX. It weighs just 0.83 pound. Samsung's tablet is also pricey - the $550 starting price tops the iPad's $499 and the Fire's $379. Of course, neither the iPad nor the Fire includes a stylus. One more complaint: Although the tablet uses the latest version of Android, 4.3, it doesn't offer that system's feature of letting multiple people share a device with separate profiles. With the Note, it's clear some of the functionality we've long associated with PCs is coming to devices we're just getting to know. There's more to be done, including support for multiple users, but I'm glad Samsung is leading us in that direction. |

Strangely, Mourinho says he was delighted when Lampard turned him down, explaining: "He is Chelsea. This is where he belongs." Despite his ties with the Stamford Bridge club, Lamps did think long and hard before deciding to stay in London. Mourinho said: "It was close, very, very close. When he eventually turned me down I told him he had made the right decision." Mourinho also spoke of his high regard for Chelsea's old guard, John Terry, Ashley Cole and Lampard - players he once called 'untouchables'. “It was close , very , very close . When he eventually turned me down I told him he had made the right decision ” Jose Mourinho The Portuguese coach said: "They have made my life easier. Some managers bring in four or five guys they know well when they first arrive at a club. "I didn't need to. They were already here." And Mourinho says Lamps, Terry and Cole have helped him to get his ideas across to the team because they have had the benefit of playing under him several years ago. He said: "It was a help for me, the way they communicated with other people, the way they know me and the way they helped others understand my ideas. "They are good guys, they are professional and the relationship they have with me is perfect for the time of their career because they trust me." http://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/343271/Frank-Lampard-told-Inter-Milan-No-way-Jose
