Istanbul, Tokyo and Madrid are the contenders in a secret ballot that will be announced at 21:00 BST on Saturday. Turkish city Istanbul was the first to reveal its presentation at a meeting of International Olympic Committee (IOC) members in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Tokyo's bid was shown second, followed by the Madrid presentation. IOC members will also decide on Sunday which one of squash, baseball/softball (joint bid) or wrestling will be added to the Olympic Games programme in 2020. And a new IOC president will be elected to replace the outgoing Jacques Rogge. The Turkish presentation, Istanbul's fifth bid for the Olympics in the past 20 years, focused on linking Europe and Asia together, with importance placed on the country's ancient history and the multi- cultural population. Istanbul's campaign had suffered a setback from political protests this summer - some at proposed Olympic venues - and also a series of doping scandals among the country's athletes. But the bid presentation highlighted the strength of the country's economy, the ambition to inspire future athletes and the prospect that the Games would bring peace to the region. It also repeatedly referenced "zero tolerance to doping". Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said: "To decide to host the Olympic Games in Turkey, the land of youth, and in the 8,000- year-old city of Istanbul, a city where continents meet, will embody the Olympic spirit. "It will be the bridge to link the past with the future and link continents, cities and the legacy of mankind. We see the Olympic Games as the rings of peace, sharing and respect." Japan's bid was the second to be heard and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe insisted Tokyo was a safe place to host the Games. After an earthquake and tsunami hit the north-east of the country in 2011, there have been concerns that the Fukushima nuclear plant, which is 150 miles from the city, is unsafe. But Abe insisted: "It has never done, and will never do any damage to Tokyo." The presentation also revealed the role sport had played in boosting the country in the past two years and pointed out that no Japanese athlete had failed a drug test at an Olympics or Paralympics. Sponsorship would reach record levels and 10 new permanent sports venues would be constructed, including the Olympic Stadium, which will be finished by 2019, in time to host the Rugby World Cup. Spain's bid emphasised providing a "sensible, reliable and trustworthy" Olympics. The presentation revealed that 80% of potential venues were already built and in use, although the delegation was also keen to stress that "Madrid is fun" and a popular tourism destination. "This is the most responsible funding in recent Olympic history," said Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. "Madrid can host the Olympics without any risk to the Olympic movement." But there were further questions relating to Spain's attitude to illegal drug taking in sport, after the destruction of 200 blood bags in the recent Operation Puerto doping scandal. "We have had a problem in the past [with doping] but we have sharpened the law," said Madrid bid president Alejandro Blanco. "We are committed to fighting against doping and we believe in clean sport." Mike Lee, the head of Vero Communications who worked on the successful Olympic bids for London, Rio de Janeiro (2016) and Pyeongchang (winter 2018), believes there is still all to play for. He said: "All the bid teams have been forced onto the defensive for a large part of this campaign because of a range of issues. "It does still feel that there is a lot to play for, and the final presentations and last two days of lobbying could be very important." A decision will also be reached by IOC members on the addition of an extra sport for the 2020 Olympics. A space was freed when wrestling was originally dropped in February, though it was then allowed to reapply. It remains in the running after the IOC executive board voted for it following 30-minute presentations by each international federation. Baseball and softball were dropped as individual sports after 2008 in Beijing, but are now back as a joint bid, while squash has never been played at the Olympics, although it is a Commonwealth Games sport. IOC president Jacques Rogge will step down on Tuesday after 12 years at the helm and a secret ballot will take place on the same day to decide from six candidates to replace the 71-year-old Belgian. The new president will face tough issues, including concerns over anti- gay legislation in Russia ahead of February's Winter Games in Sochi and construction delays before the 2016 Olympics in Rio. |

It's been two months since the Academic Staff Union of Universities embarked on a nationwide indefinite strike. This was as a result of the inability of the Federal Government to implement some of the issues contained in a 2009 agreement it had with ASUU. Recently Saturday Vanguard spoke with parents whose children are affected as they begged the government to reach a compromise with ASUU . Government not feeling the strike because their children are in private universities- Ohwaguono Onos Mr. Ohwaguono Onos, a parent and a post graduate student of University of Lagos( UNILAG), who was affected by the strike has this to say. "The ASUU strike has made my children shift focus to other things that are costing me additional funds I didn't budget for. And parents who cannot engage their wards in these suffer distress and heart-aches because of the nuisance the students constitute at home. One thing I have learnt is that after each episode of strike, the students are no more focused even when they resume lectures because they have been out for so long. ASUU went on strike because they want the govenrment to come to their plight and help them. "If the Senators can have sitting and sleeping allowances, then the builders of these characters should be considered; they are the lecturers. My only pain is that these ones in government are not feeling it because their own children are not in the Federal and State universities. Their children are abroad schooling, their children are in private universities. Most of the people in sensitive government positions are the owners of most private Universities which are funded by our own money. How can the strike affect the government? Our plea is for the government to listen to the masses, listen to ASUU and help them; that way they are helping us and saving the future. Federal government should meet the demands of the lecturers - Oluranti Olushola Mrs Oluranti Olushola, a teacher who said her son was affected by the strike pleaded that the Federal Government should help them so their children can go back to school. "I am seriously appealing to the Federal Government, on behalf of Nigerian parents, to end the strike and make education a top priority and also save the education sector from imminent collapse." She noted that the government voluntarily entered into an agreement with the union in 2009 to fund universities better and meet some other demands of the union. "The Federal Government must at all costs meet the demands of the union to save the future of our children," she said. Government should avoid workers' strike - Mrs Ruquiyat Adebayo Another teacher, Mrs Ruquiyat Adebayo disclosed that that ASUU's demands were genuine. She urged the government to make any sacrifice to improve the education sector. Mrs Adebayo also advised the government to avoid workers' strike by meeting their demands early."ASUU is not asking for too much. It's demands are justified. We have the resources in this country, and we must set our priorities right. Education must come first in all our plans."Whatever it will take, Nigeria must improve the welfare of the University teachers," she said. Governmet should resolve the conflict with ASUU - Moturayo Madandola Mrs Moturayo Madandola whose child was affected by the strike said government should resolve the conflict with ASUU quickly to save the University system from collapse. "The Federal Government should accede to the demands of the striking union so that our children can go back to school," she said. Government should be considerate - Malik Alabi Malik Alabi, a businessman expressed his feelings with anger saying, "don't mind those people in government , all their children are schooling abroad. How would they remember us? They only plan to travel to Dubai for vacation, travel out of the country for medical check up, send their children to Harvard and all the good schools abroad. These people should also consider the parents who suffer to pay school fees for our children . I have two children at OAU and they are both at home doing nothing and it pains me a lot . My only plea is that Federal Government should help us because the parents are the ones suffering it more". Four -year course is running six years because of the strike - Deaconess Joy Osewengie Deaconness Mrs. Joy Osewengie, a mother of two students in the University of Benin (UNIBEN) expressed her concern saying, "The ASUU strike has turned into something else; my children are not doing anything at home. Courses that are supposed to run for four years are now running six years and above. When will the children finish their programmes in the Universities and become very useful to their family and the society? "The government should know that an idle mind is the devil's workshop. We should bear in mind that these ones are the future of this great nation and if they are half baked because of strike and crisis, then we may end up with a very sick nation." http://m.allafrica.com/stories/201308310137.html/ |
MADRID, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Real Madrid midfielder Kaka has announced that he wants to leave the club before the transfer window closes in two days. The Brazilian who has just started his fifth season with the club, scored twice in Madrid's friendly game away to Deportivo la Coruna on Thursday night and then spoke to the press. He was momentarily the most expensive player in the world until the club also signed Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer of 2009, but while Ronaldo has been an unqualified success, injuries have stopped Kaka ever approaching the form he showed at AC Milan and the imminent arrival of Gareth Bale will push him further to the fringes of the squad. "Physically I feel very good, but the club knows that I want to find a solution to my situation," said Kaka. "Things are difficult for me and there is less and less space," he added. "I am training every day, but that doesn't mean I am happy and I have spoken to my father (who is also his agent) to see if there is something," continued the player. A return to Milan could be the Brazilian's best option after AC Milan CEO, Adriano Galliani said "Kaka is in our hearts and he could return, it's possible," in response to questions about the player, while Kaka himself ruled out a return to his homeland. "I can't go back to Brazil because the market is closed. It would have to be Europe. I think the best for me and the club is for us to reach a friendly agreement. It is a good moment to leave, but I don't want to talk about other teams, as I haven't spoken to any," he said. However, Kaka admitted that he has spoken to his current club about finding a way out. "The club knows I want to leave and I would like them to help me to find a solution. Everyone in the club knows and I hope we can find a solution between here and Monday," he concluded. While Kaka looks to be on the way out and probably won't be missed by Madrid fans, there is good news regarding Ronaldo after the newspaper El Mundo Deportivo, traditionally a pro-Barca paper, announced that he had agreed a new contract which will last until June 2018, thus ending worries that he could leave on a cut price deal in 2014 or for nothing in 2015. The paper reports the deal has not yet been made official and it will probably have to wait until after the international break next week. http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/sports/2013-08/30/c_132677881.htm |
Kate Middleton is the ultimate super-mom. On Monday, Aug. 26, just five weeks after giving birth to Prince George, the Duchess of Cambridge went for a grocery run with an enviably thin frame. Still, a Middleton family source insists to Us Weekly** that the new mom has "hardly done anything to lose the weight . . . she looks incredible. "A few weeks after George was born, you could hardly tell she had just given birth," the source marveled of Prince William**'s wife. And indeed, 31-year-old Middleton looked radiant as she ran errands on Monday, Aug. 26, in Sebago flats, snug black skinny jeans and a black-and-white striped shirt. The royal even pushed her own shopping cart through the parking lot of her local Waitrose supermarket. "Kate's still breastfeeding and the small weight she gained while pregnant has just melted off," the source continued. "She's not dieting. After giving birth, she did continue with her yoga." During her pregnancy, Middleton frequently took brisk walks with the couple's dog Lupo and had prenatal yoga sessions with a private instructor. Middleton and William, 31,** have been taking things easy since the fanfare of George's arrival, spending time together as family in Anglesey while they await the renovation of their home in Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace. And, according to 31-year-old William, the couple have been getting to know their little bundle of joy a little better in the meantime. "He's a little bit of a rascal, put it that way," the proud father told CNN in a TV interview last week. "So he either reminds me of my brother or me when I was younger. I'm not sure. But he's doing very well at the moment." http://m.usmag.com/?redirurl=/celebrity-body/news/kate-middleton-has-hardly-done-anything-to-lose-baby-weight-2013298 |
Scientists are surprised the feature has not been worn away by successive glaciations One of the biggest canyons in the world has been found beneath the ice sheet that smothers most of Greenland. The canyon - which is 800km long and up to 800m deep - was carved out by a great river more than four million years ago, before the ice arrived. It was discovered by accident as scientists researching climate change mapped Greenland’s bedrock by radar. The British Antarctic Survey said it was remarkable to find so huge a geographical feature previously unseen. The hidden valley is longer than the Grand Canyon in Arizona. It snakes its way from the centre of Greenland up to the northern coastline and before the ice sheet was formed it would have contained a river gushing into the Arctic Ocean. Now it is packed with ice. The ice sheet, up to 3km (2 miles) thick, is now so heavy that it makes the island sag in the middle (central Greenland was previously about 500m above sea level, now it is 200m below sea level). The canyon still runs “downhill”, though, and meltwater from the ice sheet seeps out below sea level at the northern end – at a relative trickle, rather than a torrent. Glaciologists think the canyon plays an important role in transporting sub-glacial meltwater produced at the bed towards the ocean. The canyon was discovered by researchers working on one of the great scientific puzzles – how much will the Greenland ice sheet contribute to sea level rise if, as predicted, the Arctic continues to warm as greenhouse gases increase? They sought the answer with myriad flights using radar to bounce signals back off the bedrock underneath. Ice is transparent to radio waves at certain frequencies. Studying the data collected mainly by Nasa and researchers from the UK and Germany over decades, they were amazed to stumble across the canyon. The lead author, Prof Jonathan Bamber of Bristol University said: "With satellite images instantly available on a mobile phone we could assume that the Earth has been fully mapped, but there's clearly a lot left to discover. We're incredibly excited about this - it really is a once-in-a-lifetime discovery to find something on this scale." Prof David Vaughan from British Antarctic Survey (Bas) told BBC News: “The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets hide a lot. It’s pretty surprising to find this canyon. Greenland isn’t that big for a canyon of that size, and for it to survive in its pre-glacial form after successive glaciations is quite something.” Prof Vaughan said the canyon would have been partly uncovered at the time of the last interglacial 100,000 years ago. “There’s likely be some sort of bacteria down there - whether it’s viable is a different matter,” he said. The canyon has never been seen by humans, who didn't exist four million years ago. If the Greenland ice sheet melts completely it will raise global sea level by 7 metres and swamp many major cities, so hopefully this is one great geographical feature that won't become a tourist destination. http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-23866810 |
