So true. Watching Americans and Brits trying to force Nigerian accents can be very cringe worthy and tiring to watch. Even Chiwetel Ejiofor in that movie where he played a Nigerian surgeon sounded nothing like a Nigerian.
TV/MoviesFolake Olowofoyeku Plays Lead Role In New CBS Show "Bob Hearts Abishola" (Pics) by LazyGold(op): 4:54am On May 19, 2019
The game-changing show is called Bob Hearts Abishola.

CBS has ordered seven new series for the 2019–20 season. The lineup includes Chuck Lorre's sitcom "Bob Hearts Abishola" starring Folake Olowofoyeku, Billy Gardell and Shola Adewusi.

It is a love story that sees a middle-aged compression sock businessman from Detroit, played by Gardell, fall for his cardiac nurse, a Nigerian immigrant played by Olowofoyeku.

"Undaunted by Abishola's lack of initial interest or the vast differences in their backgrounds, Bob is determined to win Abishola's heart, in this comedic examination of immigrant life in America," the plot reads.

Business Insider SSA by Pulse takes you through all the reasons to be excited about this new show. Here's why this is such a groundbreaking moment in American TV history:

A Nigerian playing a Nigerian

How many times have we winced in pain as foreign actors tried to pass off as Nigerians? From Will Smith in "Concussion" to Idris Elba in Netflix's "Turn Up Charlie", we have all had to suffer as our 'Nigerianess' went through the wringer.

This is finally about to change with this new CBS show which has a Nigerian-born actor playing a Nigerian role. She was born in Nigeria as the last child of her parents - Chief Babatunji & Chief Mrs Felicia Olowofoyeku. She has since won a Best Actress Award and, Best Actress In A Fashion Film Award.

In the trailer, we see the talented Olowofoyeku speak flawless Yoruba, the kind that will make any Nigerian parent proud.

First Nigerian family

As one of the writers on the show, Gina Yashere pointed out on Twitter, Bob Hearts Abishola shows "the first Nigerian family on an American sitcom."

Legendary writer and executive producer

The show is being written and produced by award-winning creator, executive producer and writer Chuck Lorre. He is also known as the "King of Sitcoms."

He is the brain behind all your favourite shows. The extensive list includes "Two and a Half Men," "Mike & Molly," "Mom," "Young Sheldon," "The Kominsky Method," and "The Big Bang Theory," which has been on air for 12 seasons.

With Lorre, the show stands a chance of being on air for some time.

More than one Nigerian

Bob Hearts Abishola offers a double dose of Nigerianess. Apart from the lead, Olowofoyeku, you also have Abishola's cousin, Shola Adewusi whose Nigerian accent is on point.

This game-changing show premieres sometime in September 2019.

EducationOla-Gbadamosi Ridwan Oladotun, LASU Best Graduating Student Speaks by LazyGold(op): 8:10pm On May 18, 2019
LAGOS—best graduating student at the faculty of Engineering, Lagos State University, in the 2017/18 academic year, Ola-Gbadamosi Ridwan Oladotun, yesterday, told a courageous story of how he had to do menial jobs to educate himself.

Oladotun, at the 23rd convocation ceremony of LASU in Ojo campus, held the audience spell bound with his story of breeding chickens before attending classes just to gather enough money for books and school fees.

The 22-year old Mechanical Engineering graduate, who made a cumulative grade point average, CGPA of 4.88 to emerge overall best graduating student, said in his valedictory speech that he was determined to succeed and therefore did not mind what he had to go through.

Oladotun, who disclosed that he lost his mother at age 12, expressed happiness that his achievement has wiped off all his hardship in school.

His words: “Precisely, I attended Federal Government College, Ijanikin in Lagos where I finished as the best graduating student in 2013. My flair for Physics and Mathematics was at its peak, driven by my inquisitiveness to unravel what was behind the functioning mechanisms of structures and systems. I found for myself, an academic niche in my area of strength and interest. Hence, I decided to study Mechanical Engineering. With God’s guidance, this is how far my zeal has brought me.

“Worth mentioning is that tuition of LASU Engineering students as at 2013 (N284,750) was a big task, considering that two of my younger siblings were getting ready for tertiary education and my dedicated father had the onerous responsibility to shoulder our financial requirements. Meanwhile, my late mother, Mrs. Aishat Adejoke Ola-Gbadamosi died while I was 12 years old.”

Poultry farming

“Eventually, my father was able to pay the full tuition, while I had to take charge of other associated obligations. In order to assist him financially, I decided to invest the cash prize I received at my secondary school Speech and Prize Giving Day in the production of 150 broilers which I successfully raised from day old chicks till maturity during the 2013 ASUU strike. I remember using bandage to wrap their broken talons and straws to administer drugs on one of the birds not because I cared about its health but because I was determined to succeed. The return on the investment was used to cater for my personal and academic needs.”

While thanking those who played significant role in his life, he said: “My story is that of zeal, passion, inquisitiveness and sheer determination. It typifies passion for success, a recipe in every degree award recipient in this hall that I have been chosen to represent today.”

In his speech, Vice Chancellor of LASU, Professor Olanrewaju Fagboun said this year’s ceremony was unique as 57 graduated in first class.

PoliticsLagos, Ogun, Oyo Govts To Create Joint Development Commission by LazyGold(op): 8:11pm On May 17, 2019
Despite their party and political differences, a ray of hope shone Friday that the Governors of Oyo, Ogun and Lagos will do the needful to ensure the collective economy of the three states is taken to the next level through the creation of a joint development commission.

Expressing optimism on the plans to ensure a good working relationship between the three states, the Governor-Elect of Ogun State, Mr. Dapo Abiola said the fact that the three states have a lot in common is enough reason to ensure sync that will promote economic development in the areas of security, physical planning, revenue generation among others.

Mr. Abiodun spoke with journalists at the Agodi Governor’s office, Ibadan after paying a courtesy call on the state governor Abiola Ajimobi in his office.

Noting that the three state governments must work to ensure that the Lagos-Sagamu-Ibadan expressway, which he described as an important economic corridor in the country must be given the deserved attention, the Ogun Governor-Elect noted that the issues of development of the three neighbouring states will get their collective attention.

Abiodun said “I am in Oyo state on a courtesy call to my elder brother and senior colleague, Senator Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state.

“You know that Ogun state and Oyo State have a lot of things in common. One, we enjoyed the proximity to Lagos and Oyo state has been the economic headquarters for the entire Southwest. What we intend to do going forward is that we are going to have a joint development commission between Ogun, Lagos and Oyo because we have contiguousness in common.

“We must ensure that our economic development is in sync whether in the areas of security, physical planning, revenue or people that probably lives in Ibadan and works in Ogun state and vice versa. We must ensure that we capture them in a tax net and we will ensure that in terms of physical infrastructure as well.

“The Lagos-Sagamu-Ibadan expressway is a road that joins all of us together, and that is probably the most important road in this country and the economy of Nigeria is intertwined on that road.

“So, those are issues that are very important to us. So, the Governor of Ogun, the Governor of Lagos and Governor of Oyo must sit down together and have a working relationship so that we can raise the economy of these states to the next level.”
