Chairman, the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ogun State chapter, Emmanuel Bankole, has confirmed that the outgoing Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, has paid workers’ deductions as he promised. The confirmation came just as the Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress alleged that Amosun had fixed the money in a deposit account for personal interest. The NLC chairman told our correspondent on the phone on Tuesday while clearing the air on the insinuation that the governor had reneged on his promise to pay the deductions. The governor had during the Workers’ Day celebration in Abeokuta told the workers they would start receiving alerts after 24 hours. But days after, workers did not receive alerts, prompting insinuations that the governor would not make the payment. When asked whether the workers had started receiving alerts, the NLC chairman confirmed that substantial number of workers had received, saying, “Good number of them (workers) have been paid”. He added, “Except for local government workers who have not been paid, all the outstanding have been paid, I can confirm this to you.” But reacting to the news of the payment, the Ogun APC in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Tuesday and signed by the party’s caretaker committee’s publicity secretary, Tunde Oladunjoye, alleged that Amosun had kept the money in a fixed deposit account. The statement read in part, “Amosun should bury his head in shame. He has not done any special favour to the workers. He should have paid the workers with the interests on their money he used as fixed deposits with leading commercial banks for years, thereby reaping billions of naira in interest. “Or where did Amosun suddenly get the money when there is no excess crude oil payment, Paris Club refund or bailout by the FG. If Amosun has given these funds to the owners when due, instead of trading with them, many who lost their lives would have been saved; many families would not have been broken and many who developed high blood pressure and related diseases would have been saved from such ailments.” When contacted, a Special Adviser to Governor Amosun, Mr Rotimi Durojaiye, faulted the claims. He said “Ogun State workers cannot say that. They know the governor loves them, and they love him too. “Whosoever is trying to knock the heads of workers with the governor is mischievous and ungodly.” https://punchng.com/apc-accuses-amosun-of-diverting-workers-money-as-nlc-confirms-payment/amp/

The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 general elections, Isah Ashiru, on Tuesday, filed an application seeking for a recount of the votes cast during the March 9 governorship polls. Ashiru’s counsel, Elisha Kurah (SAN), submitted the application to the Justice I. M Bako-led tribunal that commenced pre-hearing session in Kaduna. Justice Bako, however, adjourned the session to May 25 to allow the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the two other respondents in the petition time to respond to the PDP’s application on votes recount. Kurah who spoke to journalists shortly after the adjournment of the session urged the tribunal to order INEC for the recount of the votes cast. He explained, “We filed an application requesting to recount the votes cast during the election. “It is very crucial as we are alleging which is supported by the evidence we have that most of the results declared were phantom votes. “They were back up by votes in the ballot boxes. So we want a complete recount of the votes cast in the governorship election. “We are expecting that the results would show that the PDP actually won the election. “But votes were just inflicted randomly just to make the APC have the semblance of winning.” Counsel to PDP, Ibrahim Bawa (SAN), told newsmen that he also filed an application seeking that certain paragraphs of the respondents’ responses to ”our application be struck out for lack of merit.” Meanwhile, Abdulhakeem Mustapha, Counsel to Gov Nasiru El-Rufai in a separate interview with newsmen said, “The petitioners of the PDP and its candidate, Isa Ashiru have four highly contentious applications. “And we intend to oppose the applications on their merit. And the tribunal has given us a new date for us to come and argue the applications. So, the matter is adjourned for hearing of all the pending applications. “We have a preliminary objection that the petition is not competent. They (PDP and Ashiru) have an application that they want the tribunal to direct that the ballots be counted one after the other in open court, and we intend to oppose those applications.” According to him, the Electoral Act is in our favour, the Kaduna people have spoken. They picked Mal. El-Rufai and nothing is going to change that. “We are here to defend the mandate the people have given to the governor. We intend to convince the tribunal that the petition lacks merit and it should be dismissed,” Mustapha said. https://dailypost.ng/2019/05/14/kaduna-guber-ashiru-pdp-move-dethrone-el-rufai-seek-recount-ballot/amp/
