Health / Listeriosis And Food Processing by learnnigeria: 2:21pm On Mar 06, 2018
Train Nigeria Learn Nigeria

Suddenly we are hearing of Listeriosis and meat products been taken down from shelves in South African Shoprite stores and we are getting worried, what exactly is Listeriosis?

Listeriosis is a bacterial infection with severe symptoms especially in elderly, unborn babies and newborns which may lead to lifelong harm and even death. Its symptoms include mild fever, muscle aches, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, convulsions diarrhea and gastroenteritis and may occur in as much as two months after eating contaminated food.

People prone to the infection are mostly older adults, persons with weakened immune systems such as AIDS patients, people with cancer, pregnant women, and newborns.

The primary transmission route is oral ingestion of contaminated food products, after which the organism penetrates the intestinal tract to cause systemic infections. The diagnosis of listeriosis requires the isolation of the organism from the blood and/or the cerebrospinal fluid. Treatment includes prolonged administration of antibiotics, primarily ampicillin and gentamicin, to which the organism is usually susceptible.

Listeria has been isolated from raw meat, dairy products, vegetables, fruit and seafood.

Listeria monocytogenes
Listeria monocytogenes the causative agent of listeriosis is found in soil and water which means Vegetables and meat can be contaminated. The bacterium has been found in a variety of raw foods, such as uncooked meats and vegetables, as well as in processed foods that become contaminated after processing.

The good news is there are advancements in Food processing technology been taught presently in world class institutions which can help curb or prevent an outbreak of listeriosis. Train Nigeria Learn Nigeria project has included food processing in its courses for this year. Find out more on learnnigeria.org

Agriculture / The New Face Of Cassava Processing by learnnigeria: 9:23am On Mar 06, 2018
Train Nigeria Learn Nigeria

Food processing plays a crucial role in cassava processing majorly because Processing is necessary for removing or reducing the potentially toxic cyanogenic glucosides present in fresh cassava and also as a means of preservation.
Traditionally cassava Processing cassava involves fermentation, drying, and cooking for example in the production of garri a very popular staple in the country. fufu and lafun are also other products from cassava. The traditional process though used extensively for ages may however pose some risk such as food poisoning and contact of pest borne diseases such as Lassa fever.

Presently, the use of biotechnology in cassava processing implies not only safe but well-detoxified products for by systematically isolating and investigating the microbes needed in fermenting cassava findings, have resulted in the development of an appropriate starter culture for cassava processing that will effectively detoxify cassava, break down starch to the simple sugars needed for acid production, improve the protein content of the products, reduce processing time, and yield quality products with stable desired qualities.

Globally, everyday food processing technologies are advanced, and in a bid to keep up with the international standard of food processing so as to meet up with the Nigerian demand Train Nigeria Learn Nigeria a program hatched to 370 train Nigerians has included Food processing in the courses to be offered in this year's transnational skill acquisition in advanced technology. Investment / Nigeria Needs Electricity; Acquire Skill In Advanced Renewable Energy Technology by learnnigeria: 8:52am On Mar 06, 2018
Train Nigeria Learn Nigeria

According to House of Representative, It is "unacceptable" that Nigeria uses an estimated $5 billion US Dollars yearly to fuel their generators.

So why renewable energy?

Renewable energy is a source of clean energy which is environmentally friendly and is crucial to the economy of the future. We can only be self-sufficient in the energy field when we combine all of our energy resources such as wind, solar, hydro, biomass, biofuel, landfill, sewage gas, solid waste, geothermal energy, ocean energy etc. Renewable energy sources are natural and often replenishes itself. Nigeria needs to invest more in renewable energy as fossil fuel is a diminishing asset.

Why are we so confident?
Nigeria would not be the first...

Latin America’s electricity sector has already begun to wean itself off its oil dependence. According to the Inter-American Bank, Latin America is expected to almost double its electricity output between 2015 and 2040 and will need an extra 1,500 terawatt hours (TWh) of power. That’s a huge amount – enough to power the entire UK’s electricity grid for five years. Practically none of Latin America’s new large-scale power plants will be oil-fuelled, which opens up the field for different technologies.

Also, Countries in Central American and the Caribbean, whom traditionally imported oil, were the first to move away from oil-based power plants, after suffering a decade of high and volatile prices at the start of the century. In some cases, such as the Dominican Republic, that meant a switch to coal, which represents 5% of Latin America and the Caribbean’s TPES. However, growing environmental objections mean that new coal plants are unlikely to be adopted by many Latin American countries in the future.

Why are we telling you this?

Incidentally, Train Nigeria Learn Nigeria, an international skill transfer program in advanced technology has included Advanced Renewable Energy technology as one of its courses for the Asia/ Australia 2018 project. you can find out more at learnnigeria.org

Technology Market / Facts You Must Know About Renewable Versus Non Renewable Energy by learnnigeria: 8:44am On Mar 06, 2018
Train Nigeria Learn Nigeria

This article is a straight to the point reason why renewable energy must replace non renewable energy as soon as possible in Nigeria.

Both Renewable energy and Non-renewable can be used in the production of electricity a most valuable commodity in the 21st century. Renewable sources include wind power, solar power hydro power while Non Renewable sources include uranium, propane and fossil fuels (oil, gas, and coal).

The use of Non renewable sources in the Production of electricity leads to a series of reactions including a depletion in the ozone layer(hence the effects of climate change), a disruption in the ecosystem, catastrophic floods as a result of a rise in sea levels due to the heat trapped by green house gasses in the atmosphere, acid rain (as a result of sulfur dioxide emitted when burning coal), unusual boost in the temperature and heat waves.

Renewable sources of energy however are eco-friendly, and are unlimited. Costs for tapping renewable energies are decreasing as the technology advances and, once established, maintenance costs are generally low. The use of trained technicians to maintain the equipment, means renewable energy plants have the potential to generate more jobs than highly mechanized fossil fuel plants.

Why are we telling you this?

Because, Train Nigeria Learn Nigeria, an international skill transfer program in advanced technology has included Advanced Renewable Energy technology as one of its courses for the Asia/ Australia 2018 project. you can find out more at learnnigeria.org

Autos / Why Are There No Indigenous Auto Mobile Companies In Nigeria? by learnnigeria: 12:39pm On Feb 28, 2018
Train Nigeria Learn Nigeria

In 2015 it was news that there were three cars designed and made in Africa, like this should be news, given that Africans are engaged in auto mobile production abroad.

Retrospectively, On a visit to the Minister of Science and Technology in April 2016, Chief Innocent Chukwuma the first indigenous car Manufacturer in Nigeria revealed that 70 percent of materials used in Innoson vehicles are locally sourced and produced.

And although in 2013 Innoson unveiled the first ever Nigerian made cars, we would have expected that the auto mobile business would have flourished beyond what we have today, the question is why is it taking so long?

First We look at the epileptic power supply which can barely support households not to talk of supplying power to industries given that car manufacturing could make use of over 95.1 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity and 536,500 Btu of natural gas per square foot annually.
We are not even sure when this situation would be remedied.

The poor access to foreign exchange needed to import vital components like engines needed to manufacture cars.
It keeps fluctuating.

No favourable government policies to ensure that home-made goods are protected and patronized by all levels of government and her agencies, given that Nigerians are prone to importing rather than patronizing locally made goods.

Lastly but not the least is lack of well trained workforce or man power, it is no news that Nigerian Universities have been producing half baked graduates due to either striking of institutions, lack of research and development centers in Nigerian Universities or a stagnant educational curriculum.

What other factors do you think have contributed to the lack of auto mobile companies in Nigeria.

Education / Did You Know? When Is Easter This Year And Why Does The Date Change Every Year? by learnnigeria: 12:50pm On Feb 27, 2018
TRAIN NIGERIA, LEARN NIGERIA

One of the (un)usual things this 2018 was not only that the Valentine day coincided with the beginning of the lent (AKA Ash Wednesday) it was the fact that we were reminded that why the Easter date changes continually other christian holidays are fixed, the question is why is it so?
In addition to the above "unusualities" is the fact that this year's Easter takes place from Good Friday on March 30 until Easter Monday on April 2 - making Easter Sunday on April 1, which is also APRIL FOOL'S DAY

Easter and the associated Bank holidays can fall anytime between March 22 and April 25.

The death of Jesus occurred around the Jewish Passover, which is traditionally held on first full moon following the vernal equinox.

As the full moon can vary in each time zone, the Church said that they would use the 14th day of the lunar month instead – the Paschal Full Moon – and host Easter Day on the following Sunday.

Once the date of that moon is known, Easter Day and the Easter holidays can be determined.
Christians celebrate Easter on a Sunday as it was the day Jesus rose from the dead, following being crucified on a Friday two days before.

Centuries ago in 325, it was determined by a council of Christian bishops that Easter Day would always be on a Sunday to commemorate the happy occasion.
In Western Christianity, Easter Sunday must always fall on the next full moon after Spring Equinox.

Easter can fall as early as March and as late as April or May, depending on the year and calendar used.

Christians in the east who use the Julian calendar instead of the Gregorian calendar may have a different date.

The date of Easter changes because the full moon can fall on different days in different time zones.

Crime / An Animal Again!!! Mysterious Fish Swallows N52 Million Seedc Fund In Abia State by learnnigeria: 10:36am On Feb 27, 2018
The 52 million naira which was meant for the South East Entrepreneurship Development Centre (SEEDC) contract job and renovation of Women Development Centre has been swallowed by a mysterious fish.

It was gathered that the contract was given to Phrenemos Int Ltd and was supervised by the current Abia State SSG, Dr. Eme Okoro who is very close to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.

Before now there had been news of the SSG mismanagement of financial transactions & requests for kickbacks from contractors bellying the shocking revelation that a mysterious fish had swallowed the whole money meant for the job.

Upon investigations, it was gathered that the SSG who was instructed by Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu to oversee the job told the MD of Phrenemos Int. Ltd. to open a UBA account with one Glory Emucha in the pretence that UBA is the bank Abia State government is dealing with, not knowing the reason is for access into his account. Weeks later, the MD of Phrenemos Intl. Ltd, Engr Emma Uche Adimoha approached UBA to know the status of his account in respect of the contract payment and discovered the unbelievable. He discovered that N2m was paid in to the account but was swallowed by the fish without his knowledge.

It may be recalled that within the country N36m was reportedly swallowed by a snake in JAMB office and a monkey also allegedly swallowed N70 million public funds few weeks ago.

Romance / How To Talk About Money With Your Spouse Without Creating Frictions by learnnigeria: 1:43pm On Feb 26, 2018
TRAIN NIGERIA, LEARN NIGERIA

Included here is the exact, word-for-word phrases to use, along with the exact information you need. Use this when you’re getting married, moving in with your partner, or getting serious about money without nagging or making them feel defensive.
Bonus: Notice the psychological strategies being employed in this script.
Remember how painful those “Define the Relationship” conversations were back in college?
Now imagine you have to sit down and talk about money while wishing you could use the sweat from your forehead to drown yourself. Sure, you and your boyfriend or girlfriend might have had an occasional chat about money. But when you’re getting serious—whether you’re recently engaged or moving in together or just at a point where your decisions start to really affect each other—it’s important to spend some time talking about your money and your financial goals. Talking about money with your partner might sound painful, but I promise you it doesn’t have to be awkward. As corny as it sounds, it can actually bring you closer together—if you know what to ask and stay calm. And if your girlfriend/boyfriend isn’t a nut job.
The specific tactics aren’t as important as your attitude going in. The key is to start by asking their advice. Yes, even if you don’t need it!
Bring the topic up lightly. “Hey, I’ve been trying to learn about money lately . . . What do you think about investing versus saving?” If you don’t get an answer, try this: “Okay, hey, I have another question . . . What do you think about my spending? Is there anything you think I should change?” I guarantee you they’ll have an opinion on that—and although you’re sacrificing yourself, at least it’ll get the conversation started.
After a few days, ask for their financial advice again: “What do you think— Should I apply for masters immediately or find a job to save up. Then, a few days later, tell them you’ve been doing some more research. “I picked up a book on personal finance and it had some really interesting stuff in it,” you can say. “What do you think about talking about our money together?”
When you sit down to talk, once again start by asking your partner’s opinions: “I know you use cash to pay for everything, but this guy says we should use credit cards to build our credit and track spending. What do you think?” The goal of this meeting should be to agree that money is important to both of you, and that you want to work together to help each other with finances. That’s it!
If things go well during your first conversation, ask if your boyfriend or girlfriend would be willing to sit down again to go over both of your finances together. Remember, it’s not about criticizing or noting things that are being done wrong—it’s about figuring out ways to help each other so you can grow together. Some phrases you can use:
“You’re really good at [X] and I want you to help me with my finances.”
“We’re going to join our lives together, and I want money to be a part of that.”
“One plus one equals three,” which explains why you two can combine money smarts to create synergies. Note: Only MBAs or consultants can use this line with a straight face.
The Big Meeting
This is the big day when you both lay bare all your finances and work through them together. But remember, it’s not really such a dramatic step, since you’ve been slowly working toward this for weeks.

It should take about four or five hours to prepare for this meeting. You’ll each want to bring the following:
A list of your accounts and the amount in each
A list of debts and what the interest rates are in monthly expenses (see page 104 for details)
Your total income
Any money that is owed to you
A list of short-term and long-term financial goals
When you sit down, put the paper aside and start by talking about goals. From a financial perspective, what do you want? What kind of lifestyle do you expect? What about vacations in the next year? Does either of you need to support your parents?
Then look at your monthly spending. This will be a sensitive conversation because nobody wants to be judged. But remember, keep an open mind. Show yours first. Ask, “What do you think I could be doing better?” And then it’s your partner’s turn.
Spend some time talking about your attitudes toward money. How do you treat money? Do you spend more than you make? Why? How did your parents talk about money?
The most important goal of this conversation is to set up a plan to manage your money, including your credit cards, bank accounts, budget, and investment accounts. Essentially, you want to work through this book with your partner.
Your immediate goal should be to set up a few short- and long-term savings goals, such as a year-end trip and/or something a little more major like buying a car or putting a down payment on a house. At this point, it’s probably better not to run through all the numbers for a really large purchase because it can get overwhelming. Just set up a savings goal or two and set up an automatic monthly transfer for each of you. Longer term, you and your girlfriend/boyfriend should work together to get on the same page with your money attitudes. When you set a goal together (“We’re going to save enough to put a N300,000 down payment on a house”), you’ll both be able to commit to working toward it.

Career / Why You Start A Business Before You Are 30 by learnnigeria: 12:52pm On Feb 26, 2018
TRAIN NIGERIA, LEARN NIGERIA
Maybe you have always suspected it was about time you started your stuff, then read on to confirm you got the right vibe.

When I say before 30 I mean everything between 21- 30, because this time in your life is when you are statistically most likely to have the least amount of financial outgoings each month. Think about it, no mortgage, no consistently large bills and no children. These things aren’t going to apply to every person under the age of 30, of course not, but it will to the majority. Not having regular, hefty financial outgoings is brilliant when starting a business as it gives you freedom.

The lack of financial pressure will also enable you to focus everything into your idea. Financial pressures, such as paying a mortgage, often put people off starting a business, even if they believe their idea could be a successful or profitable one. These people fall into the trap of having to work in order to pay a mortgage, and their real passion will go unfulfilled. Don’t become a slave to your mortgage.

30 years of age seems to be the time when our parents and family want us to do grown up stuff; like getting a mortgage, settling down with a partner, thinking about marriage and having children.

Family pressure is huge and deters so many people from becoming an entrepreneur, if you have a supportive family then it makes life so much easier. If you don’t, find some entrepreneurial friends that can be the support mechanism for you.

Working in a start-up, or having a go at starting a business, will make you appreciate and value your time so much more. It will switch on the light bulb in your head which makes you more conscious about your decision making when it comes to deciding what you are prepared to put your time into, and more importantly, what you get in return for your time and that portion of your life.

The majority of under 30s are either in further education or working in a graduate, low-level role. I know, I’m stereotyping massively here, but this will apply to most. What this gives those people is, more often than not, time. How we use that time and where we choose to invest it will be critical to our future.

Outside of studying and working a nine to five job we have a large amount of time to dedicate to something, and in my opinion, that something should be a start-up. The time you can put into that seed of an idea means it could grow into something big, and if it doesn’t, that time would have passed anyway. If nothing else, you will have developed some new skills that can be used elsewhere to further your career.

Being under 30 is the time in our lives that we meet so many different types of people. If you study at University or college, think about how many skills there are on that campus. Tapping into those skills can be crucial for life beyond 30. Don’t stay in your circle of friends who study the same things as you, go and meet people from other fields and develop relationships with people who have opposite and complimentary skills to you as they could be a great value to you and your future.

If you can’t start, then join

Not everybody will want to start a business, and that’s fine. For those who don’t want to start a business, I would recommend you join a start-up, whether that be as an intern, co-founder or part of the first group of staff. Working in a start-up will give you exposure to situations and develop key skills that working in a corporate or larger organisation won’t give you. The energy and speed at which things happen, along with the excitement of a start-up, can’t be replicated anywhere else and it’s something everybody should experience.

If it doesn’t work out, you have the rest of your life to do all the ‘grown up stuff’ that society tells us that we should do. Beyond 30, you don’t have to live your life by what society thinks we should do or have. There are many stories of very successful companies being started by people over the age of 30. However the one thing all these people have in common is that while under the age of 30 they had a part-time businesses, or entrepreneurial experiences that stuck with them through their time in employment, until their own great idea hit them.

Career / Youths, Which Is A Bigger Risk, Government Paying Jobs Or Entrepreneurship? by learnnigeria: 11:24am On Feb 26, 2018
In Nigeria it is not uncommon for youths to view a high government paying job as the sole yardstick to achieving their dreams while also thinking that during retirement the Government or Company will take care of them.
However, these notion is riddled with a lot of questions:

What if the company goes bankrupt?
What if by chance you loose the ability to perform the job?
What if the government in a deficit cannot afford to pay your salary for months even for years, then what is the fate of your family, children and dreams?
Will the pension structure in the country get better? (Don't forget the many stories of pensioners who have died on the queues awaiting their pensions as well as war veterans who presently are living in abject poverty and the many stories of looted pension funds in the country)

While most people look at starting up a business as an unnecessary risk taking adventure especially at the possibility of getting a government paid job, we must not forget that there is a risk involved in everything and most importantly that the biggest risk is not taking the risk at all.

If you can't take a risk in this age I am sure you won’t be able to take any risks when you are getting old.

Take a look at this scenario, Dangote has created an income which can be willed to his generations to come, this is because business grows and is not a cycle as a paying job that demands your time, certifications taking up additional courses and having your life constantly directed by another.

You cannot pass down your professorship to your children but you can build a business empire that can be passed down to your generations to come.

Before choosing between this two also , consider the Cash-flow quadrant, a diagram which clearly shows the income, expenses, assets and liabilities and how these are connected together.

As an employee, your quadrant looks like this: the income you earned by working for an owner will be spent in expenses, another portion of the income will be paid as taxes to the government, while some of the money will be paid to banks for the loans you have taken (which you must take to keep afloat).

From the above, you can infer that: ultimately there are no assets left only liabilities while you keep working for the owner of the organization, the Government and the Banks.

The time you are using to tailor CVs so far could have gone into creating a business to help create more wealth.

More entrepreneurs, more wealth, more government workers more liability time waits for no one act fast before its too late.
