Leave Lagos out of it, NLC tells protest promoters
Nigeria-Labour-Congress

Hayab, Tilde, others: shun protest
Lagos State council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on its members not to stay away from their offices during the period marked for protest.

Its chairperson Mrs. Funmi Sessi said the organisers should stay away from Lagos and go to their respective states to stage their protests.

Sessi added that decision of the congress was informed by intelligence report that some miscreants were planning to disturb the movements of innocent citizens in the state.

She said: “The organisers should go to their own states to start this protest. They should not do that here in Lagos. These people are faceless. Why should they come to Lagos and cause havoc. They should go to their own and start it.

“Peaceful protest is part of the rights of all citizens, but protest characterized by threats, bloodshed and destructions of properties and lives of innocent citizens is unacceptable.”

She however called on governments to address the agitations of Nigerians.

Sessi called on the Lagos State government to allocate some farmlands to people and workers interested in farming.

Calls on the organisers of the protest to have a rethink and engage the Federal Government in dialogue gained more voices yesterday.

Top on the list of those that made the appeal were six governors, National Assembly leaders, ministers, and prominent Nigerians, including former Amabra State Governor Peter Obi.

While House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abass said he would hold a town hall meeting with youths on Wednesday, one of the governors.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and Deputy House of Representatives Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, reeled out President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s actions and plans that would not make people, especially in the Northwest and Southeast to join the protest tagged #EndBadGovernace.

Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti warned against breach of the law by the would- be protesters.

Obi, who said anyone who desires to protest must do so “within the law and in civil manner,” added that the hardship in the country did not start today.

Speaker Abbas

Speaker Abbas said his town hall meeting with youths at the National Assembly on Wednesday was in line with the Legislative Agenda of the 10th House which prioritises sustained youth engagement.

He explained in a statement by his media adviser, Musa Krishi that the talks was in conjunction with the YIAGA Africa and the Konrad Adenuer Stiftung (KAS).

The meeting will be attended by youth leaders and representatives of student unions, young professionals and entrepreneurs CSOs focused on youth development as well as members of the House Committees on Youth Affairs; and Youths in Parliament.

Krishi said the meeting would enable young Nigerians to voice their concerns, share their ideas, and engage with legislative leaders on matters affecting them.

Deputy Senate President Jibrin warned that the demonstration could destabilise Nigeria’s peace.

He argued that there was no need for the protest since President Tinubu was working to address the nation’s challenges.

Barau noted that significant measures such as the Northwest and Southeast Development Commissions Bills have already been introduced to tackle regional issues.

He pointed out that progress required patience and urged the public to support government’s efforts rather than resorting to protests.

Deputy Speaker Kalu

Deputy speaker Benjamin Kalu said the Southeast has every reason to be grateful to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for listening to their 54- year- old cry and giving them the South East Development Commission by signing the establishment bill into law.

Kalu, in a statement by his media aide, Levinus Nwabughiogu, said President Tinubu was already addressing the challenges of the Southeast, especially with his assent to South East Development Commission (SEDC) Bill.

He said: “There is hunger in the land and people are agitating but my brothers, I want you(youths) to be the advocates that will go to the villages and tell people to calm down, a solution is coming.

Kalu also said that efforts were on for the release of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

He argued that the only way to reciprocate Tinubu’s kind gestures to Ndi Igbo was to sustain the peace and reject to call to join the looming protest.

“There is a saying that when you appreciate your benefactor, he does more for you. Our next plea is that the President will release our brother, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“Those who are organising the protest don’t know the extent it will get to. They only know how to commence it. Don’t start what you cannot control. It’s your right, yes, but what about the right of the other person? It’s your constitutional right but make sure you don’t breach the right of the other.’’

More governors urge dialogue

Governors Ademola Adeleke(Osun), Dapo Abiodun(Ogun), Alex Otti(Abia), Umo Eno(Akwa Ibom), Hyacinth Alia(Benue), Abdullahi Sule(Nasarawa) and Acting Governor of Katsina State Farouk Jobe warned that the demonstration was unnecessary given efforts by the President and their administrations to ameliorate the economic hardship faced by Nigerians.

Adeleke meets students, CSOs, security agents

Governor Adeleke will today meet with student union leaders security chiefs, and heads of CSOs in the state

Spokesperson for the governor, Olawale Rasheed, made this known in a statement yesterday.

The statement quoted the governor as saying: “I have instructed my team to organise a dialogue session on Monday (today) where stakeholders can jaw-jaw as part of peace-making in the exercise of constitutional rights. The session will allow parties to list grievances and what they expect the government at all levels to do.

“We will convey the outcomes of the session to government leaders from myself to Mr President in Abuja. It will also be an opportunity to tell stakeholders what we are doing as a government to resolve the economic hardship facing our people.”

Adeleke reaffirmed his support for the rights and liberties of persons as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution to be obeyed.

“There is a need for peace and non-violent actions which are key to the dialogue sessions slated for Monday(today).

“We will listen and we will act in the best interest of the citizenry.”

Abiodun to youths: don’t be used by frustrated politicians

Governor Abiodun repeated his advice to youths against being used by frustrated politicians.

Abiodun said there was no need for the protest as there was room for youths to dialogue with the government constructively.

He spoke at the 22nd undergraduate and 13th postgraduate convocation of Babcock University, Ilishan, Ikenne Local Government Area.

The governor said: “Which investor will be attracted to a nation that is under siege by protesters? Please, do not allow yourselves to be used by a so-called leaderless movement, sponsored by frustrated politicians who tried in the past and lost. We do not need protests. We must not gamble with our democracy.

“I seize this opportunity to appeal to our youths to constructively engage with government in finding lasting solutions to Nigeria’s problems, rather than engaging in protest that may start peacefully but usually get hijacked and may lead to anarchy.’’

Otti expresses concern

Governor Otti expressed worry that the protest might be taken over by unpatriotic elements to create more problems for the people.

He spoke with reporters in his country home at Umuehim Nvosi in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area after a private meeting with Obi.

Otti said: “Protests are allowed once they are done within the ambits of the law.

“But the real challenge is who can ensure or assure us that it will be done within the ambits of the law. We have seen protests hijacked. My fears are that this one will also be hijacked.

“Even when you write a letter, it is a protest. You can sit down and write a letter of protest, you can call somebody and register your displeasure about what he is doing or how he is running government.

“They are all protesting and they are allowed. But when you now go outside the law and begin to unleash mayhem and violence that is where it is not acceptable.”

Sule: No need for demonstration in Nasarawa

Governor Sule said there was no need for the protest in Nasarawa State because of his efforts and Tinubu’s various interventions to minimise the economic challenges facing the residents.

Sule said: “In reality, every time we have the opportunity, we give to the people, we share palliatives to the people. We are sharing Kudin A.A Sule every month. We have been promoting agriculture.

“We are promoting employment, we are doing everything that a serious administration could do to reduce the hardship on the people.”

Eno says protest not in nation’s interest

Also, Governor Eno said the protest planners should seek peaceful options to present their grievances rather than engage in acts that could lead to a breach of the peace in the country.

He said: “It is true that protest is the right of the people, but we appeal to our people to give peace a chance.

“We should all work together to promote national peace, unity, sustainable development, and stability. We have no other country.

“We must be united in tackling the prevailing economic hardship in the country, we shouldn’t indulge in any act that will worsen the situation.

“Any protest can be hijacked by hoodlums, and there are usually negative consequences because those who see nothing good about government will use it to destroy public assets,”

Cancel strike, says Alia

Benue State Governor Alia called on unions, groups, and individuals intending to join the protest to shelve the idea and bring their demands to him.

Alia, in his brief remarks after a service at the Chapel of Grace, Government House Makurdi, said the demonstration should be canceled because the state and federal governments are doing their best to put smiles on the faces of the people.

The governor revealed that his government uncovered plots by some individuals to infiltrate the protest and cause destruction.

Regime change plot treasonable, says Olawepo-Hashim

Former presidential candidate and a chieftain of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), Mr. Gbenga Hashim has warned those calling for regime change under the guise of protests, to be wary of being charged for treason.

He argued that the right to protest by any group of Nigerians or individuals concerning any situation is an essential part of citizens freedom of expression provided for in the Constitution in so far as such rights are expressed peacefully without infringing on the rights of others.

In a statement by his media department, Hashim maintained that there “are legitimate grounds for Nigeria people to protest the prevailing economic situation and myriad of challenges not currently satisfactorily addressed, Nigerians did protest in robust manners even under military rule.”

He said that “what government needs to do is to address the issues with utmost sincerity it is time for an honest introspection.”

Ministers urge support for Tinubu’s policies

Some ministers urged Nigerians to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agenda and shun the nationwide protest.

Minister of Education, Prof Mamman Tahir, spoke on the achievements of President Tinubu’s administration at a town hall meeting in Yola yesterday.

Tahir emphasised the critical advancements Tinubu has brought to the country, underscoring that the president deserves appreciation and support rather than opposition.

“The government has within this short period done so much,” Tahir stated, enumerating the introduction of a student loan scheme, an increase in the minimum wage, and the creation of a consumer credit scheme as pivotal milestones.

Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians to back Tinubu’s efforts to resolve the nation’s issues, praising the President’s boldness and dedication.

“President Tinubu is quite aware of the current plights of Nigerians and he is working tirelessly and meticulously to resolve them,” Tunji-Ojo said in a statement from Abuja.

He called for collective resilience and patriotism, highlighting that national strength lies in unity.

Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo appealed to displeased Nigerians to give the President more time to address the country’s economic woes.

The minister, who was a guest on a national television programme , appealed to intending participants of the August protest to be patriotic.

He said Tinubu should not be judged with the expectation to solve a 100-year-old problem in one year.

He said an economy is not built overnight. “What you see today is an accumulated mismanagement over the last 100, 60, 30 years” .

Tunji-Ojo said: “Mr President, to the best of my knowledge, never campaigned to be a magician; he campaigned as a statesman, he campaigned on the basis of ‘Renewed Hope’. Before hope could be renewed, it had dwindled.’’

In Kaduna, Minister of State for Water Resources and Sanitation, Bello Goronyo, appealed specifically to Northern youths to abandon plans for protest, emphasizing their crucial role in national development.

He outlined Tinubu’s achievements, including the approval of an increased minimum wage and the signing of the North West Development Commission Bill, which he described as pivotal for regional growth.

“The proposed strike, while a reflection of genuine grievances, could hinder the progress and stability we are collectively striving for,” Goronyo cautioned.

Dr Ali Pate, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, said that the Tinubu administration deserves more support than recrimination from Nigerians.

This is contained in a statement by Dapo Okubanjo, head of Media, All Progressives Congress (APC) Professionals Forum, yesterday in Abuja.

Pate spoke when he received a delegation of the forum led by the Chairman of its Board of Trustees (BOT), Dr Isa Yuguda.

The statement quoted Pate as describing a protest against the Tinubu-led administration as “a protest against Nigeria’s health sector”.

This, he said, was because the Tinubu administration was systematically cleaning up decades of rot in the sector.

Obi to protesters: it’s illegal to prevent others’ movements

Obi warned the organisers of the demonstration to understand that blocking movements during protests constitutes a breach of the law.

He said: I plead to those who want to protest to do so within the law and in civil manner that allows us as a nation to show that we live within the law.

“Everybody knows that things are difficult and I always say that when they talk about the sponsors of protest, the sponsors are very simple, it is hunger, it is hopelessness among the youth .’’

Governor Olayemi Cardoso of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reportedly dismissed 25 out of 29 directors inherited from the administration of the former CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, who is currently facing legal troubles. According to Naija News, the dismissed directors led various strategic departments, while the remaining four retired upon reaching the statutory retirement age of 60………..CONTINUE READING

Senior CBN officials, speaking with Daily Trust, revealed that departmental coordinators are currently acting in place of the dismissed directors. They also mentioned that the management plans to hire new directors from outside the bank.

One senior official questioned the continued reliance on acting directors, saying, “Why are the departments still being manned by departmental coordinators more than three months after the sack of the substantive directors?” Another source noted that since Cardoso’s appointment, no new directors have been appointed, leaving vacant departments under the leadership of acting directors.

The directors affected by Cardoso’s restructuring include:

BREAKING: CBN Revokes Heritage Bank License
newtelegraphng.comMar 29, 2024 5:40 AM

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Monday announced the revocation of Heritage Bank PLC’s licence, New Telegraph reports.

This was contained in a statement made available to New Telegraph by the Director of Corporate Communications, Hakama Sidi Ali.

The statement reads, “The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), in accordance with its mandate to promote a sound financial system in Nigeria and in the exercise of its powers under Section 12 of the Banks and Other Financial Act (BOFIA) 2020, hereby revokes the licence of Heritage Bank Plc with immediate effect.

“This action has become necessary due to the bank’s breach of Section 12 (1) of BOFIA, 2020. The Board and Management of the bank have not been able to improve the bank’s financial performance, a situation which constitutes a threat to financial stability.

“This follows a period during which the CBN engaged with the bank and prescribed various supervisory steps intended to stem the decline. Regrettably, the bank has continued to suffer and has no reasonable prospects of recovery, thereby making the revocation of the license the next necessary step.

“Consequently, the CBN has taken this action to strengthen public confidence in the banking system and ensure that the soundness of our financial system is not impaired.

“The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) is hereby appointed as the Liquidator of the bank in accordance with Section 12 (2) of BOFIA, 2020.

“We wish to assure the public that the Nigerian financial system remains on a solid footing. The action we are taking today reflects our continued commitment to take all necessary steps to ensure the safety and soundness of our financial system.

CBN Laid off 200 Staff, Sets For Restructuring
brandspurng.comMay 30, 2024 9:15 AM

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has laid off 117 staff in a space of three weeks, between March and April, in an attempt to restructure its system.

On Friday, more workers were added to the list, as no less than 200 staff lost their jobs. The blow that occurred between March 15th and April 11, 2024, was not as severe as this.

This breaking news of the national brand holds that Directors, deputy directors, assistant directors, principal managers, senior managers, and lower-level employees are all impacted by the termination of appointments. Reputable bank employees confirmed the layoffs to our correspondent on Friday, stating that the number of dismissed employees exceeded 200 but did not fall below that threshold.

They disclosed that elder directors who were not impacted by the last round of layoffs were included in the new move. A source disclosed “It is true and confirmed.”

Employees who were unable to provide further information for fear of being bugged also stated that there was a noticeable sense of unease among employees across all levels of the organisation because the management had not established any uniform standards for making decisions.

Continuing, the information was verified by another unquestionable authority, and it seems that more firings are planned in the upcoming months, spaced out over several periods.

He revealed, “It is real and is even more than 200 officials but the actual number is unconfirmed yet. The sacking is coming in staggered phases and that is why we can’t confirm the number yet.

“But it is not less than 200. The sacked persons include directors and other cadres but the ones that are easily known are the directors. Some of the old directors that were not affected during the last round of sacks are now affected.”

The sack letters dished out by the Human Resources Department dated May 24, 2024, reveal that the policy was to restructure the organisation for better operations. It states, “The new strategic direction of the bank has been widely publicised. In line with our new mission and vision, the bank is currently undergoing a significant organisational and human capital restructuring process.

“As a result of this review, I have been directed to notify you that your services will not be required with effect from Friday, 24th May 2024. Your final entitlements will be calculated and paid to you in due course. Thank you”

The Nigerian national bank redeployed at least 1,500 employees from its Central Area headquarters to its Lagos office in February. The CBN claimed at the time that some reasons, including the necessity to realign the bank’s organisational structure with its goals and activities and reallocate capabilities to guarantee a more equitable distribution of talent across geographies, made the action necessary.

Adding, as evidenced by the facility manager’s repeated warnings, the Committee on Decongestion of the CBN Head Office’s findings, and their recommendations, was also following building requirements.

However, Hakama Sidi Ali, the director of corporate communication, did not answer many calls or texts left on her line, making attempts to receive a response from her unsuccessful.

“Nigeria, We Hail Thee”: How Tinubu, Obasanjo Renewed Cold War
thetalk.ngJun 2, 2024 5:52 AM

President Bola Tinubu and former President Olusegun Obasanjo have tactically resumed their cold war in the Nigeria political space
Obasanjo has recently been seen making cryptic comments and subtle criticism of Tinubu’s administration while meeting some PDP governors at the same time
On his part, Tinubu reacted by removing one major Obasanjo’s legacy, which was the removal of the Arise O’ Compatriots national anthem introduced by Obasanjo during his military regime in 1979
President Bola Tinubu signed the national anthem Bill into law on Wednesday, May 9. The bill returns the country to its old national anthem, ‘Nigeria, we hail thee.’

The bill repeals the “Arise I Compatriot,” which was introduced by former President Olusegun Obasanjo during his military era in 1979.

The reintroduced "Nigeria We Hail Thee" is a significant reintroduction of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and President Bola Tinubu's cold war.

How Obasanjo, Tinubu’s cold war started
Tinubu and Obasanjo have been known political enemies since the return of democracy in 1999 when the latter was president of the country and the former governor of Lagos state.

Tinubu had created more local councils to bring governance to the grassroots, which Obasanjo opposed and withheld the state allocation throughout his tenure in office.

Of course, Tinubu was the opposition leader with the defunct Alliance for Democracy (AD), while Obasanjo was in the then-ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

While Obasanjo did everything to take over Lagos from Tinubu when he was in power, particularly during the 2003 and 2007 elections, the former governor of Lagos was working to have federal power.

How Obasanjo began to attack Tinubu
Sixteen years later, Obasanjo is out of power, and Tinubu is now the president. Still, the duo of southwest politicians appear to have resumed their battle for supremacy in the region.

Obasanjo has recently been making cryptic comments and subtle criticism of President Tinubu’s administration. One such criticism is his comment on the removal of the fuel subsidy and the unification of the exchange rate.

The former vice president said:

“Today, the government has taken three decisions, two of which are necessary but wrongly and thoughtlessly implemented and have led to the impoverisation of the economy and of Nigerians. These are removal of subsidy, closing the gap between black market and official rates of exchange, and the third is dealing with a military coup in Niger Republic.”

At the same time, the former president is tactically relating with some governors of the PDP in what looks like a steady political come. Such moments are his recent dance with Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun state and the commissioning of a project in Adamawa.

How Tinubu responded to Obasanjo’s criticism
For his part, Tinubu removed one significant legacy of the former president, the “Arise O’ Compatriots” national anthem, which was introduced during his military regime and reintroduced the former anthem Nigeria inherited from its colonial masters, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee”.

The outgoing anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots,” has been sung at public functions since 1978. “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” was reintroduced after being adopted in 1960 as the first official national anthem. It was written by Miss Lillian Jean Williams, a Briton who lived in Nigeria at independence.

The House of Representatives passed the National Anthem Bill 2024 last Thursday, May 23. The Senate passed the bill on Tuesday, May 28, and President Tinubu assented to it on May 29. All in the space of one week.

On February 14, the CBN restricted IOCs' ability to transfer profits from oil exports to offshore parent company accounts.

Export Proceeds are the foreign exchange an exporter receives from the proceeds of Export activities.

The transfer of export proceeds by the IOCs has an effect on domestic foreign exchange market liquidity, according to the apex bank.

The CBN asserts that action must be taken to buck the trend because of the ongoing changes to the foreign exchange market.

According to the CBN, banks are only permitted to transfer 50% of the export revenues that have been repatriated on behalf of the IOCs to the offshore accounts of their parent companies; the remaining 50% would be repatriated after ninety days.

How forces tried to stop President’s inauguration, by Bisi Akande

AbdulGafar Alabelewe, Kaduna
May 31, 2024
• Alia: Our diversity should be our strength
Former All Progressives Congress (APC) Interim National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande yesterday reflected on concerted efforts by forces to stop President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s inauguration on May 29, last year.
He said there were serious spiritual threats and political maneuvering to stall the handover to him by former President Muhammadu Buhari after the Supreme Court affirmed his victory.

Akande, who chaired a lecture organised by a group, ‘Arewa Think-Tank,’ to mark President Tinubu’s first year in office in Kaduna, recalled that the activities of the opposition generated tension and threats, with a view to aborting the inauguration.

The theme of the lecture delivered by Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia was: “Our Diversity, Our Strength.” It was hosted by Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani.

Alia and Sani said Nigeria was on track, adding that the policies of the Tinubu are yielding positive results.

Elder statesman Akande, a Tinubu ally, said the posturing by the opposition was not surprising.

Going down memory lane, he recalled that even before independence in 1960, some opposition elements never wanted a united country.

He reminiscensed: “Since 1953, when a motion for Independence was first moved in the parliament by Chief Tony Enahoro, our polity has been moving from tensions of one threat to another that Nigeria must not be allowed to continue as one and united country.

“Towards the last elections, the prophecy was thick that Bola Ahmed Tinubu would not become the APC candidate, he did become. Religious clerics of one belief and the other became sleepless for him not to win the presidential election. He won.

“Thereafter, spiritual threats and political maneuvering began that he would not be inaugurated as a Nigerian president. He assumed the presidency.

“The battle then shifted to the judicial sword-crossing that he should be removed from the presidency. His presidency became upheld Other prediction was that he would have no health to manage the office. He remained divinely healthy.

“Then, the agitation that Nigeria would not survive his political agenda. Nigeria has been waxing stronger and stronger as one and united country. One Nigeria is a major part of what we are now celebrating.

Akande, former governor of Osun State, urged Nigerians to dedicate themselves to the cause of one Nigeria.

Rev. Father Alia, stressed the need for unity, saying: “Our religions should not be a dividing factor to us.”

The governor said Nigeria must not fail, warning that its failure would negatively affect the African continent.

He stressed: “We should not take our diversity for granted. Our diversity should be our power, strength and unifying force that hold us together as one people. Diversity should not be a source of conflicts and tension; it should rather build more robust and prosperous Nigeria. If Nigeria fails as a nation, the entire countries in Africa will fail.

“Tinubu has brought hope of unity, irrespective of our differences in religion, ethnicity and social status, and he stepped up progress or otherwise on infrastructure, education, health, agriculture and every possible parameter of social engineering. “

Sani, who also called for unity of Nigerians, said with unity of purpose, Nigeria would achieve the desired peace and progress.

He recalled that the President was one of those that fought for the enthronement of democracy as one of the financiers of pro-democracy movement during the military period.

Sani urged Nigerians to support the President because he holds Nigerians and Nigeria high.

The convener of Arewa Think Tank, Muhammad Yakubu said: “The objective of the event is to canvass support for the ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ of President Bola Tinubu, which is working for the country.”

He added: “The one-year stewardship of President Tinubu has recorded remarkable and impressive achievements in many aspects of governance, considering the level of mismanagement and unfavorable security situation he inherited from the previous administration”

SaharaReporters earlier on Wednesday reported that President Bola Tinubu had given his assent to the National Anthem Bill 2024, reverting the country to the old national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee”.

A former Minister of Education and co-convener of the #BringBackOurGirls movement, Dr Oby Ezekwesili, has said she will never sing the newly adopted national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”

SaharaReporters earlier on Wednesday reported that President Bola Tinubu had given his assent to the National Anthem Bill 2024, reverting the country to the old national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee”.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, revealed this on Wednesday at a joint session of the National Assembly marking the Silver Jubilee of Nigeria’s 4th Republic.

Akpabio said the sitting was primarily to launch the new national anthem, explaining that the President would not be making a speech because he had to leave to launch the Abuja metro line.

The Senate and the House of Representatives had previously passed the bill at separate sittings.

However, Ezekwesili in a statement posted on her X account on Wednesday, said she cannot do away with the old National Anthem.

She asserted that no one can suppress her right to dissent an obnoxious “law” that is repugnant to all that is of good conscience in Nigeria.

She wrote, "Let it be known to all and sundry that I, Obiageli “Oby” Ezekwesili shall whenever asked to sing the Nigerian National Anthem sing:

"Arise, O compatriots, Nigeria’s call obey

To serve our fatherland

With love and strength and faith

The labour of our heroes past

Shall never be in vain

To serve with heart and might

One nation bound in freedom, peace and unity.

"Oh God of creation, direct our noble cause

Guide our leader’s right

Help our youth the truth to know

In love and honesty to grow

And living just and true

Great lofty heights attain

To build a nation where peace and justice reign.

"This is my own National Anthem and let it be known that no one can suppress my right to dissent an obnoxious “law” that is repugnant to all that is of good conscience in Nigeria.”

Investor gets State Govt’s nod to build High Efficiency Waste-to-Energy Plant on Epe landfill
Lagos to generate power from solid waste, as Sanwo-Olu signs deal with Dutch firm
Lagos State has taken a major step towards turning tonnes of solid waste generated in the metropolis to usable energy.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday, formalised a partnership with a Dutch firm, Harvest Waste Consortium, for the construction of a high efficiency Waste-to-Energy plant on Epe landfill, which will utilise advanced technology to generate clean energy from municipal solid waste, commercial and industrial waste.

The innovative waste management solution is expected to take some 40,000 homes off the national electricity grid, as the technology would enhance energy security and diversification, generating between 60 and 75 megawatts of baseload electricity annually.

The partnership with the Amsterdam, Netherlands-based firm was at the instance of the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, while the agreement was signed under the supervision of the Lagos State Office of the Public Private Partnership (PPP).

Sanwo-Olu said the inadequacies of the current waste disposal practices in the State led to the sealing of the partnership to bring about innovative alternatives towards reducing environmental pollution, improving air quality, and stemming degradation and contamination of water resources that posed threats to the life quality in the State.

The Governor said the partnership represented a “monumental step” forward of his administration’s waste management strategy, stressing that the move marked another milestone in the journey to build a clean, healthy, and more sustainable city.

He said: “Today marks a significant milestone in the journey towards a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Lagos, as we formalise a partnership with Harvest Waste Consortium. This is a collaboration that promises to transform waste management and energy production in our State.

“The growth of our population signifies progress and opportunity, just as it presents challenges, particularly in managing the increasing volumes of municipal solid waste. We sought innovative and sustainable solutions through extensive consultations, visits, and a thorough exchange of information with our partners from the Netherlands.

“We are thrilled to announce the construction and operation of a High Efficiency Waste-to-Energy plant in Lagos. This state-of-the-art facility will be built with the capacity to process 2,250 tonnes of waste daily, representing a monumental step forward in our waste management strategy. The plant will not only provide a sustainable alternative to the current practice of waste dumping, it will also divert more than 95 per cent of our waste from landfill sites.”

Sanwo-Olu said the initiative would significantly reduce environmental footprint of Lagos waste disposal methods, with the plant expected to trap about 550,000 metric tons of Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases emitted daily from dumpsite.

Beyond the environmental benefits, the Governor said the project, which has over 25 years operational lifespan, would stimulate economic activities around the initiative, while attracting major investments to the State and creating jobs.

Sanwo-Olu said the technology had not only proven reliable but had also been tested by the European Commission as the best available technology in terms of efficiency.

“The facility will ensure that the potentially harmful effects of municipal solid waste are minimised, thereby protecting public health and the environment. This project will not only enhance public health and well-being but also contribute to the circular economy by reducing landfill dependency and promoting recycling,” the Governor said.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, said the partnership created a new mandate for Lagos to seek solid waste management solutions.

He said the partnership would make the State turn its burden to wealth and create new value from waste conversion.

The partnership, Wahab said, is fully backed by the Dutch government.

Deputy Consul General of the Netherlands Consulate, Ms. Leonie Van der Stijl, said the partnership presented the possibility of international collaboration to solve local challenges, noting that Lagos, through the pact, became the first partner of the Dutch waste management.

The envoy gave assurance of the Dutch government’s commitment to the success of the agreement.

Managing Director of Harvest Waste Consortium, Mr. Evert Lichtenbelt, said the firm had built international reputation in managing solid waste in a proper way.

“Amsterdam and Lagos share similar challenges in managing population and waste. What we do is exporting knowledge on managing waste properly. This MoU has set a good pace for both partner. We made a proposal to manage part of the solid waste of Lagos and in future, we can expand,” Lichtenbelt said.

Gajagojo:

It was not built to house foreigners
That is a misconception

It was USED to house participants at FESTAC
Just like the National Theatre was USED for FESTAC

It was built as a Federal Housing estate model which was used across the federation
It is a Housing estate with planning regulation

If people illegally acquired land there and built structures without planning authorization who is to blame?

All these emotions and sentiments changes nothing
thank you

FG to demolish over 10,000 illegal buildings inside Festac town

As part of measures to restore Festac Town master plan, the Federal Government through the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) has identified over 10,000 illegal buildings that will be removed for the restoration of Festac Town master plan.

It said that the move would assist in restoring the glory over 45 year old estate, saying the master plan has been completely distorted over the years.

The Managing Director of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA), Oyetunde Ojo, who disclosed this on Saturday during the quarterly general meeting of the Festival Town Residents Association held on 512 Road, blamed total collapse of infrastructure within the estate on past administrations, as well as on Amuwo Odofin Local Government and residents.

Ojo, who was represented by the Executive Director in the FHA, Ezekiel Etok, charged the Amuwo Odofin Local Government to prioritize infrastructure development in the area.

He noted that the management is prepared to partner the council to correct the mistakes of past administrations.

The FHA boss explained that current leadership is prepared implement the Renewed Hope Agenda within the estates.

He cautioned residents against building without proper approval, adding that weeks of grace would be given to those who are yet to regularize their papers to do so.

On his part, the South West Zonal Chairman of the FHA, Akin Olagbemiro, showcased the agreement signed on the 21st of April, 1988 between the FHA and the council authorities. He said that the Local Government, as the collector of Tenement Rate, shall maintain the roads, drainages, streetlights, and open spaces within the area.

He also said that all avenues in Festac shall be designated as state roads, while all roads and closes shall be under the purview of the Local Government.

Olagbemiro, however, noted that in 2021, some parts of Festac that were not motorable were fixed at the time.

The President of the Festival Residents Association, Adeshina Adegbenro, said the entire Festac is facing enormous challenges, including bad roads, irregular power supply, and environmental degradation.

He said every community in the area is faced with peculiar problems, which necessitated the need for the quarterly meeting.

According to him, the residents expect to see positive developments before the end of the year through the intervention of the FHA.

In his speech, Olaseeni Ogunjobi, the chairman of Community 2, demanded the assistance of the Federal Housing Authority in restoring Festac Town to its enviable glory.

He lamented that all the existing facilities, including walkways, have been overtaken by vendors of all sorts, with shops illegally erected while vandalism is on the rise within the estate.

The chairman also noted the menace of the cart refuse collectors and their indiscriminate dumping of refuse in any available space within the estate.

He appealed to the FHA Managing Director to help protect Victory Park from land grabbers, adding that the community has 25,000 residents and is the largest of the FTRA communities.
