Crime / 80-yr Old Grandma In Prison Over Land Matter by lifegate007(m): 3:46pm On May 09, 2015
Residents of Abule-Foli village in Igando-Orudu area of Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos got what they did not bargain for, recently, when a combined team of uniformed and plain-clothed policemen stormed their village and arrested 22 of them. Among those arrested was Alhaja Baseratu Balogun, an 80-year-old grandmother. The story took a more frightening dimension five days later when the suspects were taken from Police custody to a Lagos magistrate court where they were arraigned on a seven-count criminal charge of stealing N7,000 (Seven Thousand Naira from one Wahidi Agbaje.Incidentally, both the octogenarian and other suspects were thrown into a waiting truck after the heavily armed policemen who arrived around 10pm combed the area. However, in spite of pleas by lawyers and other well-meaning Nigerians for the suspects to be granted bail, the investigating police officers flatly objected.

The bewildered octogenarian pleaded not guilty and was remanded in prison custody along with other suspects pending when the conditions surrounding her bail will be perfected.

Alhaja Balogun who spoke with Crime Guard before the court session lamented that serious injustice had been meted out on her and her family members. She accused a top officer at the department of being biased against her and members of her family.

She alleged that during the raid, the police bulldozed a number of buildings on certain disputed area and that acted as a shield for opponents to finally take over their village. She further alleged that they stationed armed thugs and cultists there.

According to the distraught grandmother, “It is ridiculous at my age to be so framed. What am I doing with money that I will conspire with 22 people to steal N7,000? The fact of the matter is that I was born here and grew up in the village. Fifteen years ago, certain strangers showed up in the village, laying claim to our land.

This top officer was then attached to Area ‘A’ police command, Lion building. He was then a Deputy Superintendent of Police. He did exactly the same thing done recently by leading a police team that completely sacked us from the village. “This was clearly in flagrant abuse of the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP that policemen should not get involved in land matters.

The officer has now turned himself into a land grabber while still in service by using his position to intimidate, harass and unjustly arrest and detain people. Nothing exposed him better than the allegation that we forcefully entered a piece of land in Igando-Orudu, property of Agbaje and Elesho Family of Ibeju Lekki.”

One of t the victims whose house was also demolished, Alhaji Mutairu Owoeye vowed that if it remains a pint of blood in him, he would fight the injustice meted out on him   “The police at the X-Squad department of Zone 2, Onikan, have abandoned their statutory duties and have become land agents. The whole thing is ridiculous. The police at General investigation (GI) of the same zone 2 are currently investigating the same matter.

“The matter is still under investigation and the police at X-Squad of same zone 2 came with thugs and cult boys to demolish our houses,”Owoeye said. When Crime Guard contacted the Police Public Relations Officer, Zone 2, Chief Superintendent of Police, Gbenga Adeoye, he said “I am not aware of any of such case, here in Zone 2. No case related to land matter was brought to my knowledge or was investigated here. I am not aware of anything”.

Crime / 8-year-old Smuggled To Spain In Suitcase – Police by lifegate007(m): 3:38pm On May 09, 2015
Police found an eight-year-old Ivorian boy hidden in a suitcase that was smuggled across the border into Spanish territory in north Africa, an official said on Friday. When they put the suitcase through the scanner, the operator noticed something strange, which seemed to be a person inside the case,” he told AFP.A 19-year-old woman took the case through a pedestrian crossing from Morocco into the small Spanish-governed territory of Ceuta on Thursday, a spokesman for the Civil Guard police force said.

“When it was opened they found a minor, in a terrible state.”

The boy said he was eight years old and from Ivory Coast, according to the spokesman.

The Civil Guard arrested the woman, who was due to go before a judge.

They also arrested the boy’s father when he tried to cross the border a few hours later. The father is Ivorian and lives in Spain’s Canary Islands.

Thousands of migrants each year risk their lives trying to enter Ceuta and another Spanish territory bordering Morocco, Melilla, in search of a better life in Europe.

Many Africans try to scramble over the seven-metre (23-foot) fences that separate the Spanish cities from Morocco.

Others smuggle themselves over the border hidden in vehicles and cargoes or try to swim or sail from shores on the Moroccan side.

Earlier this week a 23-year-old Moroccan was found in a shipping container in the port of Melilla.

He was dehydrated after four days cooped up without food or water, since the container was left unattended over the May holiday weekend.

Celebrities / Kanye West Makes His Own Bible-the Book Of Yeezus by lifegate007(m): 11:49am On Apr 07, 2015
The Book Of Yeezus: This Bible Replaces Every Mention Of ‘God’ With ‘Kanye’By Marv on April 7, 20154SHARESSHARE TWEET SHARE SHARE 0 COMMENTS

There’s now, officially, a Kanye West bible.

Kanye West has declared himself a god on more than one occasion, and has even cited Jesus as a role model, revealing that he grew up wanting to be “like Christ”. While Ye is seen as something of a holy figure in the world of music, An Etsy User has now made his own scripture to go along with Kanye’s obsession with deification — The Book Of Yeezus.

We first heard about the bible where each mention of God’s name was replaced with Kanye or Yeezus a while back, but it’s now on the market. If you thought Sunday school needed more of a hip-hop flavor, this might be a good opportunity for you.

Rather than the entire bible, The Book Of Yeezus is simply the Genesis chapter of the old testament, so it should be a relatively quick read.

The authors of the book write; “What if the Bible, the most singularly significant publication in the ancient canon of Western tradition, were updated to reflect our modern society? What would it look like? …In a sense, Kanye’s awesome and orchestrated spectacle is truly a religious experience.”

Romance / Lebanese Muslim Husband Of 12-year-old Pregnant Wife Arrested For Sexual Abuse by lifegate007(m): 6:31pm On Mar 06, 2015
The 12-year-old Muslim bride who was forced by her father to get married in an illegal Islamic ceremony was pregnant at the time her 26-year-old Lebanese husband was charged with ongoing child sex abuse.

The 27-year-old man, whose identity is being protected, pictured at Burwood Local Court in May, has pleaded guilty to ongoing child sex abuse
UK Daily Mail  The Islamic ‘wedding’ ceremony which is alleged to have been arranged by her father, took place in the girl’s lounge room in the Hunter region in NSW, in January last year.
Not long after the man, now 27, and can not be named for legal reasons (Why not?), was charged with one count of persistent sexual abuse of a child, the girl was diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy and then miscarried in February after complaining of abdominal pain,The Daily Telegraph reported.

The girl, now 13, didn’t want to marry the student because of the 14 year age gap but the man bombarded her with text messages after he first laid eyes on her in a mosque in November 2013, the court papers stated on Wednesday.
The man pleaded guilty in Burwood Local Court in October to one count of persistent sexual abuse of a child, which carries a 25-year maximum jail sentence. The charge takes in 25 counts of sexual intercourse with a child between 10 and 14, with which the man was originally charged.
The girl’s father will face trial this year. The father, who is in his 60s, allegedly arranged the illegal marriage. The father allegedly organized his daughter’s marriage to the Lebanese immigrant because he wanted to stop her from ‘committing a life of sin’.

He was charged with procuring a child under 14 for unlawful sexual activities, and being an accessory before the fact to sexual intercourse with a person under 14. Court documents say the girl met the 27-year-old man at a mosque in November 2013  after he approached her father and asked to meet her.
Police allege the young girl’s father enabled his daughter’s sexual assault by organising the unlawful marriage – including allowing them to swap phone numbers and meet three times in the family home before the ceremony. The couple spent their wedding night at a motel in the Hunter region where they had sex several times, police allege.

A week after the wedding, the father asked the girl’s older siblings to put two single mattresses next to each other to make a queen size bed so the couple had a bed in the family home. The imam who performed the ceremony pleaded guilty to solemnising the marriage and was fined $500.
In court documents it is claimed that since the marriage the pair engaged in sexual activities on a daily basis until February when their relationship was discovered by a Centrelink (welfare) worker, when the man tried to get registered as the girl’s legal guardian in order to obtain welfare benefits.
The man has had his student visa cancelled and is now living in an immigration detention centre.

PapaBrowne: I love this thread and more importantly, I love the renewed interest in Agriculture displayed here. NIgeria is defintely on the right path in this generation.

For the past 2-3 years, I have been involved in research on Agribusiness Value Chain. I have even founded a company in this regard. Based on that, I'll give my 2cents to the poster and to those others already engaged or seeking to engage in Agriculture.

I would start by saying that instead of having an Agricultural mindset, it's a better Idea to have an Agribusiness Mindset. The difference between the price of products sold at farm gate is miles apart from their actual value in the retail markets. With an Agribusiness mindset, you would seek to add value to the products you produce and in turn sell at much better prices.

I will use the calculations given by @Olushowumn to butress my point.
Based on Olushowumn's calcultions, 1 hectare of land should produce 50,000 hills of corn which would equate to 200,000 cubs. An Igba(not sure what that means) would contain 400-600 cubs and could be sold for between 2000-4000 Naira. Lets use 500 cubs and 3000 Naira as average for an Igba.

So,
500 cubs = 1 Igbas = 3000 Naira.
200,000 cubs = 400 bags = 1.2 million Naira per hectare.
So your 7 hectare would yeild 8.4 million Naira.
Now that's good money. Or so it seems.

Now let me tell you how much that amount of corn would be bought be consumers if its boiled or roasted and sold on the streets.

1 roasted or boiled cub of corn sells for 50 Naira each on average.
Lets assume that from the 200,000 cubs per hectare, we loose 25% and are left with 150,000 per hectare
If that amount of corn were sold retail we would get 150,000 cubs x 50 Naira = 7.5 million per hectare.
Your total farm would sell for 7.5 million x 7 = 52.2 million Naira.

Yes. 52.5 million Naira is the amount your corn would sell for on the streets by the time a simple value of Roasting or Boiling has been added to it. That is a very long way from what you will get if you choose to sell your corn at the international price of $300 per Metric Tonne.

Now this is what you get if you choose to sell you corn on the international market without adding value.
Based on you post, you will achieve 3 tons per hectare which is 21 tons for your 7 hectares

1 Metric tonne = Approx. $300 = 48,000 Naira.
21 Metric Tonnes= 21 x $300= $6300 = 1.01 Million Naira.

The big question is:
Why would I want to sell my corn internationally for 1 Million Naira when I can sell locally wholesale for 8.4 million or retail for 52.2 million Naira.

In a nutshell, taking a value added approach to your farming business is the way to go. Selling raw stock for a small farmer with 20 hectares for me is not ideal. Add value. Tweak the Value chain to your favour and see your farnm generate you millions. Thats exactly what the white man has done for ages. They take our Cocoa and turn it to chocolates. While the Cocoa market is worth about $7 Billion dollars annually, the Chocolate market is worth over $100 billion despite the fact that Chocolate is just one of the by products of Cocoa.

There are a million things that can be created from your corn.

Animal feed. Custard and Pap. Corn Starch. Corn Syrup. Corn Flour. Corn Cake. Corn Oil.

And a whole lot more.

My best: Developing a cool franchise system where your corn is either Roasted or Boiled at major street junctions.
