Politics › Opinion: Why Lagos Must Face Up To Its Water Crisis by lightblazingnow(op): 5:50am On Jun 02, 2017*. Modified: 6:52am On Jun 02, 2017 |
Opinion: Why Lagos must face up to its water crisis By Akinbode Oluwafemi , Special to CNN
Story highlights Despite being surrounded by water, access to formal clean water is low in Lagos. Akinbode Oluwafemi is the Deputy Executive Director of Environmental Rights Action/Friends of The Earth Nigeria Akinbode Oluwafemi is the Deputy Executive Director of Environmental Rights Action/Friends of The Earth Nigeria, a Nigerian NGO that tackles environmental human rights issues in Nigeria. The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of the author. Lagos (CNN)Lagos is a city surrounded by water, yet there is none to drink.
Access to formal clean water is abysmally low, with the majority of Lagos residents relying on the informal sector comprised of wells, boreholes, rivers and rain water. In 2016 daily demand in the state stood at 724 Million gallons while production was 317 million gallons, leaving a gap of 407 million gallons. Worse still, some of the water never reaches households due to perennial fracture from dilapidated transmission pipes and old trunk lines. As water is essential to both physical and economic well-being the lack of it causes numerous problems.
Lagos 2050: How should Africa's biggest city prepare for doubling in size? In Lagos it is a major public health threat because of the interconnectedness of water access to sanitation and public health. It has been alleged that there have been a number of deaths in the state due to the consumption of contaminated water. The most recent being earlier in the year when two students lost their lives at the prestigious Queens College school in Yaba while 1, 222 became ill after reportedly drinking contaminated water. The then principal of the school denied the allegations.
Dirtied by success? Nigeria is home to city with worst PM10 levels The negative impact of acute water shortage is not limited to public health. A large part of Lagos' teeming population depend on informal water vendors where average spending on water could be as high as $44 a month almost at par with Nigeria's minimum wage of $47 per month. In its Lagos Water Master Plan 2010-2020 the state government said it needs $2.5 billion to revamp water infrastructure, but they have ignored the real cause of the crisis. Instead of looking at water from a human rights perspective they have simply commodified water, and laid the framework for how big corporations can profit from the misery of poor Lagos residents.
Africa's 'resilient cities' plan for the future The causes of the current state of water supply in Lagos are similar to the allegations of large scale corruption by previous managers of the Lagos State Water Corporation (LSWC). Bad policies that include failed Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) failure to ensure democratic governance and meaningful public participation, inadequate budgetary allocations and regulatory failures. As far back as the 1980s, the Lagos state government has implemented loans provided by and financed by the World Bank as solutions to the water crisis. Those loans now approaching the billion dollars mark has failed to produce the much needed succor while the citizens are saddled with loan repayment burdens.
Why Africans get a raw deal in the justice system The water failures and the apparent serial deaths from water borne diseases contrast negatively with the Lagos Megacity image projected by the Governor Akinwunmi Ambode administration that has been promoting privatization or its twin, Public Private Partnership (PPPs), as the silver bullet to the problem. The Lagos State government escalated the situation in February when it submitted a draft law which sought to criminalize the informal water sector. The draft law made it illegal for residents to sink wells, boreholes or even draw water from neighbors, stream, rivers or "any water bodies". It recommended fines and prison terms for defaulters.
Africa's 'happiest' countries revealed The draft law enraged civil society groups and the international community. After marches by activists and civil society groups the Ambode government succumbed and removed the obnoxious sections. Yet the battle for Lagos water is not over yet. Ambode got commendations for removing those sections that makes the Lagos citizen a victim of the failure of successive administrations to invest sustainably in the water sector. He however, needs to come out strongly on the need to reject the commodification of water and protect Lagosians' human right to water by adopting transparent, inclusive, pro-people alternatives to managing the public water sector. http://edition.cnn.com/2017/05/26/africa/lagos-water-opinion-piece/index.html

Curlieweed: Lightblazingnow
When you hear criminals in power talking grandiloquently about the "vision of the founding fathers" , they actually mean founding farters. They (the founding garters) farted all over the foundation and today the place has fulfilled it's design as a fully matured filthy latrine.
I am glad you know.......
Thanks man |

ReubenE: The paragraph before the last one is a famous quote by Obafemi Awolowo. I can tell you that he is right to have said what he said. The tone of the article tried to blame him but I want to ask, isn't it the same reason a section of the country is agitating for separation? Isn't it the same reason we kill ourselves on daily basis because we don't see ourselves as Nigerians? Isn't it the same reason why there is widespread nepotism, hate, intolerance in the country today? Indeed, Nigeria is a distinctive appellation used to describe those living within this territory from others who are not.
The problem with Nigeria and Nigerians is that we do what we condemn.
I have lived in the North, in the east, all my life in the west, and my native south, we all hate, victimize, refuse to see ourselves as same people united by one country. We turn around and blame our neighbours for same thing we do.
Until when we stop offending the wrong person, and begin to tell ourselves the truth that we all deserve to change at the ethnic level, we'll continue to go in circles.
Lastly, I'm surprised it took the OP this long to realize Nigeria is founded on fraud and it is what it is today because of what it is founded to be. You got me there It was a chance to share it here........ Thanks |

It is too late for Nigeria to disintegrate, says Fayose punchng.com
Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose Kamarudeen Ogundele, Ado Ekiti
Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has said it is too late for Nigeria to break up, calling for dialogue to resolve various agitations in the country.
Fayose said this while reacting to the Wednesday meeting of Governors of the South-East states with leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.
He said the meeting had provided a veritable platform, which all Igbos must key into otherwise they would remain guinea pig in Nigeria.
The governor, who appealed to the Federal Government to allow political solutions to agitations by Nigerians as against the use of brute force, said he remained “committed to the call for full and total restructuring of Nigeria through dialogue and negotiation because it is too late for Nigeria to disintegrate.”
According to a statement issued in Ado Ekiti on Thursday by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Fayose said he was “particularly glad that Southeast governors have come to the realisation that they cannot ignore their own in times like these as agitation is normal and must not be ignored, although the approach should be handled with caution.”
Fayose blamed the actions and utterances of President Muhammadu Buhari for the agitations going on in the country.
“The father figure of this country is President Buhari and if his language does not represent unity, there will be agitations like we are witnessing now.
“A father figure rallies even the bad boys in his house. His utterances and actions when he became President were against the unity of this country.
“How can a president say that he will only attend to the needs of those who gave him 97 per cent vote and neglect others who didn’t vote for him?
“For Nigeria to move forward and in unity; there must be no sectionalism, there must be no oppression and there must be justice and equity.” http://punchng.com/it-is-too-late-for-nigeria-to-disintegrate-says-fayose/amp/

Most of you who think that to believe in the name of the lord Christ Jesus is the fastest means to meet your financial needs... And you have prayed, fasted and have sown all manner of seed offering to your pastors to force this change to bear, I have a word for you.... Don't wait for ever Christ Jesus isn't here in the world just to meet your financial needs. He came that you might have life and have it forever and ever more.... I believe that from when you accepted the message of CHRIST JESUS and now you have never been taught that is in your life to renew your mind and get you transformed into the image and likeness of God Almighty which the first man lost to Satan..... You didn't believe in CHRIST JESUS so that your situation can be changed, if you are not working then because you have believed in the name of Christ Jesus employment will come rolling to your path like most of you testify at your various churches...
You all are into deeper religion. You need to come out immediately and accept the gospel of God Almighty... This message started with CHRIST JESUS testifying that the almighty father God so loved the world and gave them his only begotten son that whoever believes should not parish but should have eternal life.... And this is eternal life that they might know God Almighty and Jesus Christ whom he has sent to bring us to the full image and likeness of God Almighty..... Have you started growing and you are just waiting for him to come and carry you to heaven....
Most of these folks who says they are waiting for Jesus Christ to come back again and carry them to heaven are bunch of jokers who derives joy in publicity... They want to be seen preaching the gospel of Christ Jesus without any real commitment to growth... The real believers are those who worship God Almighty in the Spirit and have no confidence in the flesh.... The lord of heaven and earth have set an open door for your growth to know him and his righteousness.. Make up your mind to grow and not to wait in vain... Those who wait upon the lord are renewed with strength and courage to see him coming with the clouds of heavens to take them to where they belong..... His kingdom of light.. |
