The long awaited 2014 JAMB Cut off mark was yesterday announced after the 5th Combined Policy meeting on admissions to tertiary institutions, held at the National Universities Commission, Abuja.
The cut off marked for 2014 admissions into universities was fixed at 180, while that of polytechnics and colleges of education was fixed at 150.
The Supervising Minister of education, Nyesom Wike frowned at the fact that some institutions did not utilize fully the quota given to them last year which consequently denied some candidates admission. He described this a s a great disservice to the Nigerian child.
The JAMB Registrar, Dibu Ojerinde gave a statistical break down of candidates’ preference for tertiary education as follows; degree awarding institutions totalled 1,584,348, representing 70 per cent; National Certificate in Education applicants totalled 25,767 representing 1.6 per cent; National Diploma, a paltry 22,072, representing 1.3 per cent while National Innovation Diploma had just 46, representing 0.003 per cent.

The West African Examination Council on Wednesday released the full results of 1,543,683 candidates who sat for its May/June 2013 Secondary School Certificate Examination.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the number represents 91.38 per cent of 1,689,188 candidates who registered for the examination.
The Head of National Office (HNO) of WAEC, Dr. Charles Eguridu, announced the results on Wednesday when he addressed a news conference in Lagos.
Eguridu said 889,636 candidates obtained six credits and above, while 1,074,065 others obtained five credits and above.
According to him, the results of 145,505 others, representing 8.62 per cent, were being processed due to some errors.
“These errors are traceable to the candidates as well as their schools in the course of registration or writing the examination.’’
The HNO explained that such errors were being corrected by the council to enable the affected candidates to get their results fully processed and released subsequently.
Eguridu disclosed that the council cancelled the result of 2,176 candidates.
He explained that the cancellation was due to multiple entries by thecandidates discovered while processing the results.
“In line with the council’s regulation, the entire results of such candidates who have been found guilty of this act had been cancelled, “ he said.

A man named Mr. Michael allegedly killed his wife that he has married for 30 years now with a pestle after a serious arguement with his wife on sunday evening around 11pm. The deceased which happens to be a worker in winners chapel ogun state who is always found sweeping the church auditorium. This horror incident happened in their residence in joju area of ogun state.

phoneport: The House of Representatives Thursday summoned the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof Dibu Ojerinde, over mass failure by candidates in the last Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The recently released result of the examination showed many students scoring below 150, out of the 400 marks based on the four papers each of the candidates sat for. Chairman, House Committee on Education, Hon. Aminu Suleiman (PDP Kano), said yesterday that the summons became imperative due to series of complaints and protests by a cross section of Nigerians. Said he: “We heard that JAMB authorities had formally explained some reasons for the mass failure. This is not enough if the content of the complaints of Nigerians is anything to go by.
One of the complaints was that concerning the usage of computer for the exam that
most of them had never had contact with before. According to him:“It can be recalled that the House passed a resolution asking JAMB not to use computer for the 2013 exams and they said they would make it optional; but there were still complaints by candidates that some of them filled the manual or paper option only to find themselves being asked to write the exams using computers,”.

He added that the mass failure might not be unconnected with the introduction of computers for the exams, bearing in mind that most candidates especially from Government secondary schools were not exposed to computer before.
He further said the committee had no option that to act accordingly to work towards finding a lasting solution to the perennial failures of JAMB candidates.
