Olumide Akpata, the only non-SAN and outsider in the race for the President of the Nigerian Bar
Association, NBA, has opened a huge lead in the election and is on the verge of dealing a huge blow to the establishment at the Bar and their favourite candidates.

If the results hold, it will be the first time in over three decades that the president of the NBA will be emerging from outside the rank of senior advocates. As at 3.30pm Thursday, Akpata had polled 8409 votes which is about 53.8 per cent of the vote cast.

Babatunde Ajibade, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) had polled 3729 votes while Julius Adesina had 3478 votes.

Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), a prominent Nigerian lawyer, on Tuesday, appeared before the Justice Ayo Salami-led panel to testify against the embattled, EFCC boss, Ibrahim Magu.

Speaking during the testimony, Ozekhome submitted six exhibits, including two video clips and some documents. In the two-hour-long session, Ozekhome spoke about the alleged leadership failures of Magu and the investigative deficiencies of the anti-graft agency. Mr Tosin Ojaomo, Magu’s lawyer said he was aware of the senior advocate’s visit to the panel. Ojaomo said it was unfortunate that Ozekhome, who had publicly decried the leadership of the EFCC and Magu, could be invited by the panel, while his client had not been given the opportunity to defend himself.

Ojaomo said,

“We are aware of the visit of Chief Ozekhome. His grouse is the freezing of his account in 2017, which was later unfrozen. Unfortunately, it only goes on to show that the panel is on a fishing expedition because the panel is also inviting people, who have a score to settle with Magu.

“This is not how panels are supposed to act. We all remember how the Justice Oputa panel conducted itself professionally many years ago. People, who were invited, were given petitions ahead of time so that they could defend themselves. Till date, Magu has not received any petition. Is this fair?”

Ozekhome confirmed his visit to the panel and also revealed that he tendered some recommendations. He added that his major aim was not to settle scores with Magu but to address the deficiencies in the EFCC with a view to helping it to actualise its core mandate. Ozekhome said he submitted six exhibits to the panel, including two videos as well as a letter he wrote to the then acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, on the urgent need for reforms and accountability as regards recovered loot. Ozekhome stated,

“I have not even said anything about the seizure of my funds by the EFCC and I am surprised that Ojaomo, a lawyer, can talk about something he didn’t witness. My N75m was seized by Magu and his goons despite the fact that it was my legal fees. I went to court and defeated them; so, I have nothing to prove.

“All I did at the panel was to tender some documents and some CDs, which contained videos. One of them is a video where I was given a standing ovation at an event where I advised Magu on how to fight corruption. It was about telling them not to do a one-sided anti-graft war, where you arrest activists and leave those in government.

“I also tendered a letter dated May 2017, which I wrote to the then acting President, Prof. Yemi
Osinbajo. In the letter, I raised 12 questions as to where the recovered loot and property were and if the property had been sold, to who and for how much. Tell Ojaomo to relax and that I have not yet started.”

A Lagos base legal practitioner, Chuks Nnalugha has condemned those calling for zoning in next year`s governorship election in Anambra State.

Speaking in an interview with irukkanews,Nnalugha who is the legal adviser to Anambra State Indigenes Lawyers Forum (ASILF), said that since the governorship has rotated among the three senatorial zones in the state, candidates should start running base on their own personal credentials instead of the zone they hail from. He said that it is heartbreaking that at this time and age, people would still be talking zones where candidates should come from instead of people with competence to transform the state.

According to him,for Anambra to join the league of frontline states in the country,they have to discard zoning and go for competences. He said that former governor Peter Obi was not elected because he hail from Anambra Central but because he was a successful business man and people believed that he had the capacity to transform the state.

According to him, Peter Obi did not disappoint those that saw his credentials and voted him into power. He told irukkanews thus,

“It is disappointing that people should be calling for zoning in a small state like Anambra. Since they are talking about equity and justice. Officers of Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LSPPPA) are now at Murtala Muhammed Airport Road locking banks, hotels and other businesses premises and asking for approval permit without prior notice.

Businesses owners were shocked when they saw men dressed in Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority Tee Shirts accompanied by armed police men invading their premises and ordering them out and locking up their gates. Even when the owners pleaded to be given time to bring the documents, they were threatened by the police men to leave their premises or have themselves to blame with guns been brandished recklessly.

The commissioner for Urban Development and physical planning who came with the officers refused to come down to address the worrying crowd. Some of the victims who spoke with the media lamented the high handedness of the Lagos State government, especially these trying times of Covid-19.

According to them, this clearly showed that Nigerians are not practicing democracy and that the fight against non-indigene businessmen in Lagos state is heating up again, adding that in a civilized setting this cannot happen. They said that it is not right for a government agency to invade a business premises like bunch of thugs and begin to seal up the offices without prior notice. A quick study showed that most of the buildings locked up were owned by none indigenes

One of the victims, Raphael Adigun said that he was sure that what the men came to do was illegal. According to him, there is no way an agency of government can be operating like bunch of touts. He said that even the commissioner who came with them displayed arrogance by not coming out of his vehicle to address the agitation.

“I feel that they should be giving us respect because we are the ones paying their salaries. How can they come to seal our businesses premises without prior notice?  If they had told us that they would be coming to inspect approval plans or building permits, or given us a notice to submit our plans, I would have gone to their office to submit mine and also have it here handy. Do they think that building permit is identity card that one would be carrying about”?

Also contributing, Michael Jones said that government should try to be civil because the way they are operating, they are risking mob action. He said that the people are just doing dis-service to the good intentions of the governor of Lagos State who is carrying business owners along in everything that he is doing.

“Imagine what they are doing. Ordering all the customers and workers in a bank out and locking the bank. Is this how an agency of government operates. This is illegal operation and a aim at destabilizing and victimizing non-indigenes in Lagos state because if you check all the buildings they locked up, they are all owned by non-indigenes. That the commissioner come with them has not made anything right. Even we don`t even know if the man is actually a commissioner because we don’t know the faces of the commissioners”.

Rapper Nikki Minaj is expecting her and Kenneth Petty’s first child.

Minaj previously spoke about her desire to become a mother, telling Complex in 2014:

Another drama for NDDC

The Acting Managing Director of Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the Niger Delta
Development Commission (NDDC) Professor Kemebradikumo Pondei and his team on Thursday, July 16 walked out on the House of Representatives Committee on NDDC.

He told the committee that he and his team were unprepared to make any presentation before the
committee. Pondei had abjected to Chairman of the Committee, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, presiding over the investigative hearing, insisting he cannot preside over a matter in which he is an accused.
Members of the Committee, including Benjamin Kali, Ben Ibakpa and Shehu Koko, told the Acting MD that since there was no document before them, he is constitutionally bound to answer their queries. While members were still making a contribution on the issue, the Acting MD sought permission to leave and walked out before the committee could grant or reject his request.

The House Committee members who were furious, accused the Interim Management Committee of trying to frustrate legislative functions and ordered that a warrant of arrest be issued against the MD.

Meanwhile, The Street Journal reported that at least 30 armed policemen laid a siege to block Joy
Nunieh, former Acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), from leaving her house in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, for the airport on Thursday. A source who mentioned that Nunieh was due to appear before Senate committee on NDDC in Abuja this morning said,

“Nunieh just called me now. The police have taken over her house since 4:00 am in Port Harcourt. She is expected to testify before the House of Reps today.

”With noticeable distress in her voice, she alleged the police broke into her premises and she expected they would take her away soon,”

Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, and Nunieh had last week appeared before a Senate ad hoc panel investigating the alleged mismanagement of N40bn by the Interim Management Committee of the NDDC.

What looked like the celebrated movie, 90 Miniutes at Entebe played out this morning in PortHarcourt the capital of Rivers State as the state governor, Nyesom Wike stormed the residence of the former Acting Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Joy Nunieh to rescue her from the hands of security operatives.

At least 30 armed policemen laid a siege to block Joy Nunieh, former Acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), from leaving her house in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, for the airport on Thursday. A source who mentioned that Nunieh was due to appear before Senate committee on NDDC in Abuja this morning said,

“Nunieh just called me now. The police have taken over her house since 4:00am in Port Harcourt. She is expected to testify before the House of Reps today.

”With a noticeable distress in her voice, she alleged the police broke into her premises and she expected they would take her away soon,”

Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, and Nunieh had last week appeared before a Senate ad hoc panel investigating the alleged mismanagement of N40bn by the Interim Management Committee of the NDDC. At the hearing, Akpabio said he did not know the expenditure of the NDDC under Nunieh because she refused to give him briefings.

But Nunieh, who made damning allegations against Akpabio, said the minister engineered her removal for failing to dance to his tunes. She alleged that Akpabio asked her to change the dollars in the NDDC account; sack the head of the legal team, who is from the North; remove all directors, who refused to follow his instructions and also implicate Peter Nwaoboshi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on NDDC.

According to Nunieh, Akpabio warned that if she did not follow his instructions, she would be removed. She also alleged that Akpabio would never sign any document but rather ask his subordinates to commit fraud. She said the minister asked her to take an oath of secrecy to stop her from exposing any of his dealings but she refused. Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has since rushed to the Nunieh’s residence following the stampede of armed policemen in the compound.

The armed security operatives besieged the residence of Nunieh on a day she was billed to travel to Abuja to testify before an ad-hoc committee of the House of Representatives investigating the alleged malfeasance in the NDDC. The armed policemen, who reportedly came in dozens as early as 4am on Thursday, were said to have surrounded the house attempting to gain entrance into the main building. A source said the policemen banged the gate repeatedly and later forced it open but could not enter inside the house where Nunieh took refuge.

Nunieh confirmed that armed security operatives were in her premises located at 3, Owuru Creek view, off Herbert Macaulay Street, Old GRA, Port Harcourt, on Thursday. Disturbed by the development, it was gathered Wike, who had earlier warned against harm coming the way of Nunieh, moved in to monitor the development. Sources from the Government House confirmed that the governor was at the residence but failed to disclose the actions he took when he arrived the area.

The Federal Government has warned that passengers not wearing face masks will be considered unruly and ejected from their flights.

The Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, said this in Abuja at the 49th joint national briefing of the
Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19. This is as he also said that non-travelling aides of all dignitaries will no longer be allowed into the terminal as part of the new protocol.

According to him, President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the banning of aides of ministers,
military, National Assembly members, governors, judiciary and others at the airport, with exemptions of people with disabilities who will be assisted at the airport by the ground staff of the airline as well as those with diplomatic immunity.

“Everyone who has seen me travel knows that I don’t travel with aides or assistants. I travel alone, I
carry my bags by myself. I’m leading by example, so I expect all VIPs to comply with the new directive that no non-travelling aides will be permitted in terminals,” Sirika said.

He said that the last row of seats on the aircraft will be reserved for isolation of persons suspected to have the coronavirus infection. He said going to the airport, there will be mandatory temperature and symptoms checks.

“Face masks must be worn at all times inside the airport and airplane. Frequent cleaning of hands and physical distancing will be maintained at all times,” he said.

He explained that the cabin air is safer than most other environments and that the processes of
compression, heating, cooling, and filtration that aircraft cabin air is subjected to take out 99.99 per cent of all organisms including viruses. He said,

“The inside of an airplane cabin is one of the most hygienic environments in the world, because
of the high efficiency of the filtration and purification processes and systems for the circulating air.”

Speaking on the resumption of flights, the minister said,

“Domestic flight operations will commence on Wednesday, July 8, 2020. Lagos, Abuja and Kano airports have passed all tests. But Wednesday resumption is only for Lagos and Abuja. Kano, Port Harcourt, Owerri, Maiduguri scheduled to reopen July 11.”

Sirika also stated that Nigeria was not rushing into the reopening of airports as five countries in Africa and over 100 countries across the world have already started domestic air services.

“The flight simulation is to achieve some basic things; firstly it is to maintain physical distance with each other, secondly, it is to wear protective materials such as face mask and face shield, thirdly, it is to maintain hygiene; fourthly, it is to clean the area and surfaces and that is a function of the robot itself apart from identifying the passengers.

“All of the things that have happened here (flight dry run) is to ensure we don’t spread COVID-19,” he said.

The University of Lagos, UNILAG has acquired profiling Robots capable of detecting Covid-19 and for the purpose of enhancing studies. This was disclosed by the university management via their Twitter handle on Monday, June 29.

It tweeted,

“Today, UnilagNigeria received a donation of some cloud-based intelligent humanoid robots, CRZR from @ThePlatformCap. While donating the the robots to the university, the chairman @ThePlatformCap Dr. Akintoye Akindele stated that the donation of the robots was made in order to improve the learning experience in the university as a whole.”

Although the university did not reveal the robots are for Covid-19 profiling purposes, the humanoid robots are known to have such abilities. They can Be Programmed to Identify Unwanted Items and check body temperature. The robots are Interactive and can lead or direct someone.

Profiling robots can also be used for detection of security threats and possession of dangerous items by anybody on campus. If effective, other universities may follow suit in acquiring the robots to help profile and detect Covid-19 positive persons by running checks on body temperature.

Worthy of mention is the fact that this is reportedly the first of its kind among universities in Africa.
